Build Background
Activate Prior Knowledge  Tell children: We are going to learn about sports
and the different things we use to play them./Vamos a aprender sobre los deportes y las
diferentes cosas que usamos para practicarlos. Ask children to name some sports
and write them on the board. Now ask them what equipment they need to
play the sports: How do you use those things to play the sport?/¿Cómo usan esas cosas
para practicar el deporte? Have children pantomime that they are playing a sport
and using appropriate equipment. As you observe the children, ask them to
name their sport. Remind them to stay in their own space and to be careful of
others.

Introduce the Focus Skill: Ask and Answer Questions  Explain that
a question asks who, what, where, when, why, or how. Ask a model question:
What is my name? (My name is _____.)/¿Cómo me llamo? (Me llamo _____.) Have
children practice asking questions and responding with correct answers, i.e.:
How old are you?/¿Cuántos años tienes?/Where do you go to school?/¿A qué escuela
asistes?/What is your favorite sport?/¿Cuál es tu deporte favorito?

Acquire New Vocabulary  Introduce new English and Spanish sports vocabulary: track/pista, cleats/tacos, tee/estaca,
knee pads/rodilleras, paddle/remo, chess/ajedrez, rollerblade/patín, badminton/bádminton, brace/abrazadera.
Explain each term and ask questions to confirm comprehension. You put knee pads on your knees before playing a sport. What do you think they’re for?
(To protect you if you fall.)/Las rodilleras se ponen alrededor de las rodillas antes de jugar un deporte. ¿Para qué serán? (Para protegerte si te caes.)

Read and Respond  Display the book. Read the title and author name aloud as you track the print. Read each page aloud and
point to each object as you name it in Spanish and English. Point to the object used in each sport on both the left and right pages. For
example, point to the field/campo on pages 6 and 7. Then repeat the question from the left page and have children respond. After you
have completed the book, go back and point out the objects that you did not discuss. Ask what they might be used for. For example:
What do we do with a tennis ball?/¿Qué hacemos con una pelota de tenis?

60 minutes, Days 4–5

❤HEALTH
Curricular Enrichment: Health  Tell children that they are going to make a picture of themselves practicing a
sport safely. Explain that there are many sports that require special clothing, shoes, pads, and helmets. Give an example of
soccer shin pads and baseball helmets. Brainstorm other sports that need special equipment. Then hand out paper, coloring
materials, scissors, and sports magazines, if available, and have children draw or make a collage of themselves practicing a
sport safely. When children have finished, have them show their work to the class. Ask them to point out safety equipment and
guess how it protects them. For example, I wear soccer cleats so I don’t slip and fall./Yo me pongo tacos de fútbol para evitar que me resbale
y me caiga. Encourage other children to offer ideas if any child is unable to make inferences about equipment use and safety.
Have children incorporate new Spanish and/or English vocabulary according to level.

Home Connection  (Teacher, you may want to photocopy this activity for children to complete with a family member.)
Practice asking and answering questions with your child. Correct him/her if the question is not complete or the answer does
not respond appropriately. Then ask specific questions about
