ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

Industry starting to look up with rig count increases, talk of lifting
the export ban and regulations getting tighter in reporting of spills
By Cory Dellenbach

I
Cory Dellenbach

ts hard to follow the gas and oil industry

without getting a little sick of the bad
news thats been popping up the past
several months falling rig counts,
layoffs, fines and service companies closing
their doors have dominated the headlines,
but its not all bad.
There has been some good news
lately. As I write this in early July, the rig
count has just gone up for the first time in

29 weeks. The Eagle Ford and Williston

basins both went up by three rigs, while
the other remaining plays were stable.
Canada also saw good news with its rig
count increasing by four.
In other good news, oil prices have
stabilized in recent months and industry
experts are predicting theyll continue
to improve, but they may not climb as
fast as they did when the latest oil boom
began in 2008.
LOOKING AT
THE GOOD
This issue features many
things that could have a positive impact on the oil and gas

oilfield wastewater by selling it to California farmers who are in the midst of an

unprecedented drought. While the water is
salty, its still a suitable stand-in until the
drought is over.
CLEANING UP THE BAD
Colorado also made some news
recently with its new regulations on oil
spills, which require any water, oil or
flowback spill of at least one barrel to be
reported within 24 hours. Before 2014,
operators were required to report spills of
five barrels or more, but only had to do so
within 10 days.
While the number of spills in
Colorado hit a 16-year high in 2014, spills
of oil last year were less in volume than
they have been for more than a decade,
and water spills fared similarly, according
to Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation
Commission records. Last year, 2,431
barrels 102,102 gallons of oil were
spilled, a 38 percent decrease in volume
from the previous year.
There are companies all over North
America that specialize in cleaning up

industry. In our Bakken Extra, we take a look at the effort

Supporters in North

see huge benefits in its

Bowling Green, Kentucky, is one of those
companies. The company has a couple
hydroexcavators within its fleet and serves
the oil and gas industry in several ways
from environmental spill cleanups to

in the year. Itll be exciting to see what
happens in the industry. Heres hoping the
good news continues.

Cover Story

CONCEPT TO

COMPLETION
Diverse environmental services company offers a
hydroexcavation service arm thats providing the
company with significant growth opportunities
By Peter Kenter | Photography by Jeff Brown

nvironmental services company TPM Group was founded

in 1991 on the business of excavating and removing
underground storage tanks. Today, hydroexcavation
is becoming an increasingly important component of a
diverse business that prides itself on delivering service
from project concept to completion.
TPM President Eddie Hanks was introduced to the fine art of excavation
at age 14.
My older brother CK was an entrepreneur from birth, says Hanks. He
was a good mentor. He was mowing lawns, raising chickens and selling the
eggs in the fifth grade. In 1978, Kentucky was making a huge infrastructure
commitment to supplying rural water. The government was putting in water
mains, but installing the service lines was the responsibility of the property
owner. CK bought an old Ditch Witch J-15 trencher, and I learned how to use
it in the field behind my house. I offered an attractive price for my labor and
my brother then subcontracted the trenching work to me.
Hanks established Hanks Construction of Bowling Green in 1986 and
operated it while completing a degree specializing in business organization
and communication at Western Kentucky University (WKU). I was doing
small commercial and industrial projects including demolition, concrete
removal and installing sewer and other utilities. I offered packages to take
care of everything from the foundation down. I had two employees, but still
had more work than I could handle, so I would sometimes get up at 6 a.m.,
work until 8 a.m. and then take a break for a 9:15 a.m. class.
Classes concluded in 1989, but Hanks couldnt collect his bachelors
degree without finishing his internship. I couldnt put the business on
hold and go back to school, he says. So in 1991 I bid on the steam tunnel
replacement contract at WKU and wrote my internship on that.

GET THAT VETTE

There may be only one thing more disheartening for a fan of
classic Corvettes than seeing museum-quality cars lying on the
bottom of a sinkhole thats NOT seeing them on the bottom of
that sinkhole because theyre covered in dirt and rubble.
Thats just what happened on Feb. 12, 2014, at the National
Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, when the floor of the
museums Skydome and eight Corvettes disappeared in a sinkhole 40
feet wide and 40 feet deep. Local general contractor Scott, Murphy &
Daniel was retained to respond and recover the most easily accessible
cars by crane following removal of several building roof panels. The
museum is located less than 2 miles from hydroexcavation service
specialist TPM.
While the first five cars were visible, three were buried and
lost, says TPM President Eddie Hanks. I called Mike Murphy, the
construction manager, and told him that we could uncover the
missing cars with our hydroexcavator. I even demonstrated our
hydroexcavation capability by bringing in my own 1984 Corvette,
dumping a pile of dirt on it with a front-end loader and safely
removing it with the hydroexcavator. They said that they had tried
hiring a hydroexcavation contractor and that the machines wouldnt
be effective at 40 feet. I told them we could do it.
TPM crews prepared by fitting their Guzzler with a vertical hard,
smooth-walled pipe, secured to the side of the sinkhole to help
overcome the static resistance of a 40-foot pull. Crews used hydraulic
man lifts available on site to direct the vacuum pipe.
We were able to pull out enough soil to find two of the missing
cars so that a mechanical long stick excavator could be used to dig
around them, Hanks says. They were then lifted to safety by a crane.
The story also ended well for the museum. All of the cars were
recovered, and we received amazing worldwide publicity from the
sinkhole, says museum communications manager Katie Frassinelli.
We had record attendance in 2014.

GOMC

Hanks recalls talking to his father about

ivory tower consultants who design a project and
then bring in the technical know-how to perform
the actual work. My dad advised me that I needed to bring more value to my
service by becoming the consultant and also delivering a service, he recalls.
That would also maximize the value of my construction equipment assets to
allow for a better return on investment.

About 20 percent of our calls for hydroexcavation are

incoming, with about 80 percent of our business
coming from cold calling.
Eddie Hanks

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY
Hanks saw a business opportunity following the establishment of the
Environmental Protection Agencys Regulations Pertaining To Underground
Storage Tanks in 1988, which required owners to either upgrade or replace their
tanks over the next 10 years.
I became state certified to work on underground tanks, hired a geologist
and a hydrologist to handle contaminated soil remediation and groundwater
issues, and established TPM Environmental Services in 1991, alongside Hanks
Construction, to provide a more precise technical service, says Hanks. From
that point on I realized that I needed to provide a full range of offerings to my
customers, from concept to completion.
The companys first hydroexcavator was purchased in 1994 an
Aquatech Jet/Vac.
We didnt realize its importance when we bought it, says Hanks. We
were using it for clean-outs of publicly owned treatment works, vacuuming out
clarifiers, cleaning lift stations and jetting. It wasnt officially a hydroexcavator
until we purchased a hydroexcavation reel attachment. That allowed us to
perform hydroexcavation for all of the fiber optic lines that were being installed

BELOW: TPM operator Tyrone Scoggins rolls up the hose after

for companies such as Level 3 Communications, for

which we took on a six-month potholing contract.
TPM opened a second office in Nashville in 1995,
about an hours drive south of Bowling Green, and a
third office in Louisville earlier this year.
Today, the company has consolidated all of its
operations under the TPM brand and employs 42
people. Its diverse offerings include hydroexcavation,
emergency environmental response, environmental
consulting and services, industrial cleaning,
underground storage tank removal, plant maintenance,
demolition, drilling, aviation fuel tank fabrication,
industrial water treatment, and waste management.
The expansion was anything but random each
business helps to complete a full project cycle using
in-house resources.

The staff at TPM Group includes (front row, from left) Jimmy Gardner, Gene Langston,
Hugo Ardon, Tyrone Scoggins, Justin Lewis and Boddie Swords; (back row) Aaron
Bagley, Roy Phillips, Scotty Dukes, Pablo Davilla, Robert Turner and Fransisco Lugunas.

The basic service area covers Kentucky and Tennessee, but contracts have
taken the company as far afield as Virginia, Arizona, Florida, Alabama, New
Jersey, Michigan and Louisiana.
TPM operates five vacuum rigs: a Cusco liquid/dry unit with a 3,000-gallon
steel tank and Fruitland Manufacturing pump mounted on a Freightliner body;
a 1985 Peterbilt semi tractor matched with a 5,508-gallon steel tanker and
Fruitland Manufacturing pump; a 2004 Guzzler with a 3,000-gallon steel tank
and air knife attachment mounted on a 1998 Ford LT9501 chassis; a 2014 Vacall
combo unit with 2,000-gallon debris and 1,500-gallon freshwater galvanized
steel tanks and hydroexcavation package mounted on a Peterbilt Model 365;
and a 2004 Vactor 2110 combo unit with a 1,600-gallon stainless steel tank,
a pair of 1,000-gallon aluminum water tanks and a pair of hydroexcavation
packages. Hanks has attended the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment
& Transport (WWETT) Show for the past five years and purchased the Peterbilt
there last year.
TPM keeps hydroexcavators and other vehicles in top shape at its Bowling
Green maintenance shop, overseen by a dedicated fleet manager. The shop will
handle anything from routine maintenance to major rebuilds.
The company employs four dedicated hydroexcavator operators. They
claim these units, are proud to operate them and take good care of them, says
Hanks. We have a total pool of 10 drivers who are hydroexcavator trained.
The company is committed to certification and training. Not only do
workers receive regular safety training updates, TPM provides third-party
training to outside workers, including hazardous waste operations, confinedspace entry, lock-out and tag-out procedure training and first aid/CPR. Some
employees also attend dedicated training programs offered by hydroexcavator
manufacturers.
VARIETY OF JOBS
Hydroexcavation currently forms about 10 percent of our business,
but its a growing segment of what we do, says Hanks. A particularly strong
growth area for us is working at power plants that are converting from coal-fired
power to natural gas. Theres a lot of conversion and plant expansion planned,
and the power utilities are going to drive hydroexcavation growth over the next
10 years.
One of TPMs largest contracts was completed last year at the Paradise

Authority. We were performing geotechnical excavation for confirmation
of utility locates and footing and load-bearing capacity for the purposes of
replacing the existing infrastructure to run the plant on natural gas, he says.
TPM has also seen interest from natural gas companies who need to
uncover lines that are protected by cathodic anodes.

For us, pre-qualification is allowing us into places that we

couldnt otherwise go.
Eddie Hanks
The magnesium anodes are sacrificial, so in order for the pipeline to
receive the continued benefits of protection, the anodes need to be replaced,
says Hanks.
EDUCATING CLIENTS
Educating clients about the capabilities of hydroexcavation remains a
challenge. Urban areas are more likely to be familiar with hydroexcavation and
clients in Tennessee are more likely to be aware of it than those in Kentucky.
About 20 percent of our calls for hydroexcavation are incoming, with
about 80 percent of our business coming from cold calling, says Hanks. We
generally go out to potential clients with a live demonstration about once a
month, but we recently shot a video that will be posted on our website that we
hope will replace those trips.
However, some repeat customers have become particularly savvy about
hydroexcavation. They know, for example, to ask for a hydroexcavator that has
certain options and capabilities, such as greater capacity for product removal,
says Hanks.
As with many businesses, the company website and social media are
prime advertising vehicles. TPM also advertises with industry associations,
such as the Associated General Contractors of Kentucky. However, Hanks
also likes the personal touch, frequently setting up booths at trade shows,
primarily in Kentucky and Tennessee.

A CLEANER

WAY

Pennsylvania company testing a way to recycle drill cuttings and conserve space at landfills
By Ken Wysocky

THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY PRODUCES MILLIONS OF TONS

of drill cuttings every year, most of which end up in landfills. But a Pennsylvania
environmental company is testing a recycling process that could result in a
beneficial reuse of the cuttings and conserve valuable landfill space for public
use and reduce disposal costs for drilling companies along the way.
Clean Earth is working with the Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection (PADEP) to determine if a process developed at
the companys plant in Williamsport could render drill cuttings suitable for
various uses, including building drilling pads, constructing haul roads, minereclamation efforts and structural fill on industrial/commercial construction
sites, says Averil Rance, the companys vice president of environmental health
and safety.
Thats what we hope
to prove out as we finish our

Rance says. Some cuttings will

data that will allow the PADEP

to make an informed decision
Averil Rance
about how drill cuttings will be
managed.
BENEFITING THE INDUSTRY
A process that can recycle drill cuttings would benefit the oil and gas
fracking industry. While national statistics regarding drill-cuttings production
are difficult to find, the PADEP reports that the states gas and oil industry
produced 1.52 million tons of drill cuttings in just 2014 alone, of which 1.42
million were placed in landfills. And until the recent industry downturn, the
Bakken Shale region produced about 2 million tons of cuttings annually, most
of which are disposed of in landfills. And according to the Marcellus Center
for Outreach and Research at Pennsylvania State University, an average well
20

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - SEPTEMBER 2015

in the state produces 937 tons of drill cuttings.

Moreover, as more and more landfills reach peak capacity, existing
space is at a premium and its difficult to get approval for new landfills.
And even when they get approved, the process is expensive and prolonged.
By recycling cuttings, you reduce the material going into landfills, which
extends their life for public use, Rance points out. It also mitigates the
need for construction materials that come from quarries and other sources, so
recycling cuttings reduces the destruction of natural resources.
Also, its cheaper to recycle than to pay tipping fees at landfills, he says,
noting another advantage. At the end of the day, reusing drill cuttings could
be much more economical for drilling companies.
In and of themselves, drill cuttings arent contaminated, except for traces
of indigenous metals such as arsenic and lead and some naturally
occurring radioactive materials that get churned up as the drill bit does its
job. Drilling fluids are a much bigger culprit; the fluids, which mix with the
cuttings, can contain chlorides, barium and oils, although most of those
elements are removed from cuttings via on-site cleaning/separation processes
at drilling pads, Rance says.
THE IDEA
Officials at Clean Earth first became interested in recycling drill cuttings
when they noticed a similarity between cuttings and dredged material, which
the company already recycles. (A facility the company operates in New Jersey
one of its 14 East Coast recycling, treatment and processing facilities
is allowed to receive and process more than 6,000 cubic yards of dredged
materials per day.)
In taking a look at the nature of the material and how it was being
generated, it became obvious that, from a physical standpoint, the material
behaved very much like processed dredged material, Rance says. So we
sat down with key permitting folks at the Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection and said wed like to try to process drill cuttings.
PADEP officials were intrigued enough with the concept to grant Clean Earth
a research and development permit to accept and process up to 1,000 tons of
cuttings per day, Rance says.
To test the veracity of Clean Earths process, PADEP officials asked the

company to demonstrate that recycled cuttings which are tested to ensure

they meet state criteria could be used to cap specified brownfield sites.
Thus far, that effort is considered successful, Rance says.
THE PROCESS
Drill cuttings get transported from drilling pads, either in trucks
or in roll-off cans. Upon arrival at the companys facility, the cuttings are
tested to ensure they meet state-mandated criteria
for soil-fill standards; Clean Earth rejects cuttings
with levels of contaminants that exceed statemandated parameters. So far, about 90 percent of the
cuttings meet the criteria established by the PADEP,
Rance says.

If the state approves the Clean Earth process, Rance expects that other
states may follow suit and allow companies to process cuttings for reuse,
since most states have similar approaches to managing contaminated soils.
In the meantime, Clean Earth continues to search for other potential reuse
applications, such as strip-mine reclamation projects.
This material came from the earth, Rance says. So theres no reason
why it shouldnt be beneficially reused. GOMC

By recycling cuttings, you reduce the

material going into landfills, which
extends their life for public use.
Averil Rance

Next, the mixture goes into a receiving pit.

From there, an excavator scoops it into a pug mill,
also known as a paddle mixer. Think of it as a giant
blender that creates a homogenous mix, Rance
suggests. At the same time, a proprietary cementlike material is mixed in to solidify the cuttings and
encapsulate the trace amounts of contaminants. It
takes just a few minutes to mix, he says. We mix
the cuttings in roughly 1,000-ton batches.
After that, a conveyor belt transports the cuttings
into a material storage area, where each batch is
sampled to ensure it meets post-process criteria,
also established by the state. We want to be sure
its clean enough by state standards, Rance explains.
Then the cuttings get placed in concrete storage cells
that can hold about 3,000 cubic yards of material.
After each 1,000-ton batch passes a sampling test,
they can be commingled, he says. Typically, we
wait three to five days for analytics testing, he says.
During that time the cuttings cure, or dry out, so
to speak. By the time its done, the cuttings look just
like dirt.
PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
By spring 2017, Clean Earth officials expect
theyll have amassed enough information for the
state to decide if it wants to issue general permits
that would authorize companies to process and reuse
drill cuttings, as long as they follow a regimented,
permitted process. Right now, drill cuttings dont
meet the states clean-fill standards, but were using
their criteria as a measuring stick, Rance explains.

THE GAME CHANGER

Powerful vac truck opens up new markets, improves productivity
and employee safety for Minnesota contractor
By Ken Wysocky

ts usually difficult for a contractor to significantly boost productivity,

increase customer satisfaction, enhance employee safety and open up new
markets, all in one fell swoop. But theres always an exception to a rule,
and in this case, its OSI Environmental, an industrial-cleaning firm that
accomplished all of the above by investing in a powerful Powervac 1650 Mini
vacuum truck built by Presvac Systems.
For years, the Minnesota-based company used liquid vac trucks to
collect semisolid waste from a variety of facilities, ranging from wash-basin
sumps at mines to frac tanks in gas and oilfields. But work crews typically

had to add water to the waste, then agitate it to make it easier for the vac
trucks to load the material, explains Pat Tracey, general manager of OSI. The
company operates seven offices scattered around the Midwest (in Illinois,
Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin) and one in Texas; Tracey is based in
Eveleth, Minnesota.

It was manageable, Tracey says. But we might have to add 1,000

gallons of water to remove 1,000 gallons of sludge. That adds to the waste.
So now were generating far less waste and saving customers the expense of
using all that water, too. The truck pulls out solids and semisolids much more
effectively. Id say weve cut the time spent on most jobs by 50 percent.
As an example, Tracey points to oil/water separators the company cleans
every week for mining customers. Before, that task usually took six to eight
hours. Now our crew is usually back by noon, so we can do two jobs where
we normally could do only one, he says. Thats a substantial difference.
Furthermore, adding water to regulated waste makes it unsuitable
for landfill disposal, which meant crews had to instead containerize it in
55-gallon drums or cubic-yard containers, then transport them to a permitted
facility for disposal. That raised costs for customers, Tracey notes. But with

our new truck, we dont have to add water, which results in acceptance into
permitted landfills, he says.
And its not as labor intensive, either, he adds. Our guys used to
have to shovel waste by hand toward the hose. But now the high-suction
blower which produces much higher (vacuum) volume than our liquid
vac trucks draws in the material much faster and easier. In addition, that
also minimizes the need for confined-space entry work in pits and tanks,
which results in safer working conditions for employees and reduced costs for
customers, Tracey says.

Its a wonderful piece of equipment. Were considering

adding another one so OSI can add to its services and
be more efficient at others.
Pat Tracey

All the environmental work we do is highly regulated in terms of safety,

he explains. In the mining industry, for example, MSHA (the Mining Safety
and Health Administration, a division of the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration) does daily property inspections and they like what were
doing. We do a lot of work in depressed pits, and if theres no need to put
someone in there, everyone likes that.
The truck is built on a 2012 Peterbilt 348 chassis with a 3,000-gallon,
DOT 407/412 carbon-steel debris tank. It features a 1,600 cfm rotary-lobe
blower made by Robuschi USA Inc., a 350 hp Paccar PX8 diesel engine, an
Eaton Fuller 10-speed manual transmission, and heated valves. Unheated
valves tend to freeze up during frigid Midwestern winters, so heated valves
help to reduce downtime, Tracey says. Plus, when valves freeze up and bend,

they no longer seat properly, which means they cant pass a DOT inspection,
he adds. And new valves can run anywhere from $400 to $800 apiece.
Tracey also lauds the debris tanks full-opening rear door, which greatly
improves dumping efficiency when combined with a tank vibrator; that
combination of features eliminates the need for employee confined-space
entry to remove debris from the tank, he says.
The Presvac unit also enables OSI to offer another selling point to
customers at high-volume waste sites: roll-off vacuum boxes, which help lower
customers costs because theyre not paying to have a vacuum truck serve as a
long-haul, waste-transport vehicle. Heres how it works: An operator uses one
hose to connect the vacuum truck to the vacuum box (which usually holds
about 4,000 gallons of waste). Another hose then runs out the other side of
the vacuum box to the waste-collection point.
As debris travels toward the debris tank, solids drop out to the bottom
of the vacuum box. When a box fills up, the crew swaps in another box.
Then the customer can hire a lower-cost truck to take the vacuum boxes to
a disposal center, rather than sending a more expensive by-the-hour vacuum
truck on a long-haul drive, Tracey says. We couldnt do that (use vacuum
boxes) with our liquid vac trucks because they couldnt sustain enough
vacuum power, he points out.
Overall, Tracey cant say enough about how the Presvac unit has changed
the dynamics of his business. It not only helps him bid for contracts more
successfully, the unit also enables the company to take on jobs it couldnt do
before. We now take on jobs that involve vacuuming heavier materials that
we wouldve walked away from in the past, he says. It broadened our bid
capability because it can do so much more.
The truck definitely was a worthwhile investment, he continues. Its a
wonderful piece of equipment. Were considering adding another one so OSI
can add to its services and be more efficient at others. GOMC

downturn in prices, there has been talk of
removing the long-standing export ban on
crude oil.
The ban was enacted in the 1970s
after the Arab oil embargo caused an
energy crisis in the U.S. and elsewhere.
Alaskan crude holds a special status as
being exportable, and exports to Canada
were never banned.

David Flynn
I think the
state of North Dakota
stands to gain a lot from lifting the export
ban, says David Flynn, an economics
professor at the University of North
Dakota. Flynn has studied the oil industry
and sees many benefits in lifting the ban.
THE BENEFITS
One of the biggest potential benefits
Flynn sees is an influx of money for
infrastructure. With more profit from more
trade, the Bakken could see an expansion
in the oil transportation network.
Wed see a significant push to
improve infrastructure, Flynn says. He
adds that it would be quick and bountiful.
As the infrastructure improves, more

would come in and provide an economic

boost. Housing would come in quicker
also, Flynn says.
Flynn believes even with just a hint of
lifting the ban, companies will likely take
the possibility into consideration as they
draft plans for the future, which would
prevent some downsizing. That in itself
could result in a minor lift in the economic
slowdown in the region, he says.
MOVE OF PRACTICALITY
Sen. John Hoeven (R-North Dakota)
is one of the main supporters of lifting
the ban and says that doing so would be
a move of practicality. We actually have
more light sweet crude than we can refine,
he says.
Hoeven says the countrys refining
capacity is slanted toward heavy crude oils
that are imported from nearby countries
like Canada and Venezuela. Most refineries
were set up before modern technology
unlocked an abundance of light sweet
crude in the U.S.
The main benefactors of the ban,
Flynn says, are the refineries that enjoy a
partial market. He says this means one
part of the supply chain is put on a pedestal
over the others. I think the arguments are
stronger now than they ever have been to
get rid of this export ban.

WORKING ON LEGISLATION
Hoeven is working along with Sen.
Heidi Heitkamp (D-North Dakota) and

The challenge in selling the idea to
members of Congress, Heitkamp says, is
that many fear for their political careers
in supporting such a bill if gas prices do
indeed go up as a result. Heitkamp says its

Marcellus & Utica Extra

A PLACE FOR GROWTH

Pennsylvania sees positives coming from Marcellus and Utica
shales as businesses move into area and add employees
By Greg Bates

illiamsport, Pennsylvania, has

always been filled with diverse
industries. In the mid-2000s,
Williamsport had businesses such as metal
manufacturing, wire rope manufacturing
and food industry, including a Kelloggs
plant.
Then just over five years ago, a new
industry emerged: gas and oil businesses.
The Marcellus and Utica shales were just
becoming big, and Williamsport, located
in the north-central part of the state, was
going to receive a strong economic boost.

Its a life-saver for the state of Pennsylvania. If

you didnt have the Marcellus in Pennsylvania,
Pennsylvania would not be able to
support jobs and the incomes.
Larry Allison Jr.

We saw the industry come in here

in 2009, 2010 they were looking for
buildings, properties, says Jason Fink,
who is the executive vice president of
the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of
Commerce. It was real active.
Williamsport was prepared for the
gas and oil boom, already having a strong
infrastructure in place. The largest city in
Lycoming County had an existing rail yard
so it could accommodate all the rail activity
the industry was going to generate.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Since the Marcellus and Utica shales
encompass over 90,000 square miles,
including about 60 percent of Pennsylvania,
Williamsport isnt the only city to feel the
26

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - SEPTEMBER 2015

trickle down of good fortunes.

Its a life-saver for the state of
Pennsylvania, says Larry Allison Jr.,
owner of Allison Crane & Rigging, which
has its main office in Williamsport. If you
didnt have the Marcellus in Pennsylvania,
Pennsylvania would not be able to support
jobs and the incomes.
According to a January 2014 survey
done by the American Petroleum Institute,
the oil and natural gas industry contributed
$34.7 billion to Pennsylvanias economy
from October 2012 to September 2013.
During that same time frame, 339,000 jobs
in the state were supported by the oil and
natural gas industry.
Allison says his company has done
so well since the boom, it has been able to
triple its employees salaries. The benefit
for the state of Pennsylvania is just giant,
he says.
In a report released by the U.S.
Energy Information Administration, in
2012, Pennsylvania ranked as the thirdhighest state in dry natural gas production.
Pennsylvania (6.13 billion cubic feet
per day) trails only Texas (18.84) and
Louisiana (7.98). In fact, Pennsylvania
came in No. 13 in the world in dry natural
gas production.
PLENTY OF ACTIVITY
Growth really began to pick up
in Williamsport by 2009 as hotel
development, apartment complexes and
new business construction were popping
up around Williamsport. The citys
industrial park was pretty mature and
built up prior to the boom, so any new
construction had to take place outside the
city limits.

The Marcellus Shale has brought

plenty of new businesses to Pennsylvania.
According to Pennsylvanias Quarterly
Census of Employment and Wages, between
the third quarter in 2010 and the third
quarter in 2014, 960 (331 core industry and
629 ancillary industry) Marcellus Shalerelated establishments were added in the
state. That represents a 39.7 percent growth
in the core industries and 5.1 percent
growth for ancillary industries.
Big businesses such as Halliburton
entered the market in 2010. The Texasbased oilfield services giant set up shop
in nearby Montgomery. You had other
companies like that that just stepped into
the area, either doing new builds, new
construction or adaptive reuse of existing
buildings, Fink says.
Companies like Allison Crane
& Rigging already had a presence in
Williamsport and took advantage of having
an energy gold mine in their backyard.
When the gas field came to the
Williamsport market, we were the first
company getting into the oilfield because
they were calling for our cranes and they
were calling for our trucks, Allison says.
We expanded upon that and grew our
crane fleet; we grew our trucking fleet; we
grew our water fleet.
Allison Crane & Rigging has expanded
its operations in Pennsylvania to meet the
needs of the boom. It also has locations in
State College and Mansfield.
Geographically, weve spread out to
where the hot markets are, Allison says.
Well keep expanding into the hotbeds.
ADDING THE WORKFORCE
Since Williamsport had never
experienced anything similar to a boom in
natural gas, an influx of workers invaded the
area at the outset of the Marcellus discovery.
We had a lot more people come to the
area from outside of Pennsylvania because
we didnt have local people that could
do the jobs, Fink says. That was a big
thing, because we didnt have an available
workforce that understood what the needs
of the industry were. We had a competent,
capable workforce, it just wasnt skilled
within the gas industry.
However, those who came to teach the
local workers about the industry were only

in Williamsport for a short time and then left. The city didnt experience a huge
population increase because of the discovery of natural gas. We havent really
seen that population boom and bust like North Dakota has seen, Fink says.
A SLIGHT SLOWDOWN
Williamsport and throughout Pennsylvania are still attracting businesses
to the area, but the activity has slowed down due to the drop in the crude oil
prices. Absolutely. Look at the rig counts, Allison says. You drop the rigs
by three-quarters almost. Its affected everybody.
Halliburton announced in June it was closing its 430-worker facility in
Homer City, which is in the western part of the state.
When theyre going gangbusters, everybodys coming in trying to take
advantage of whatever opportunities there are, Fink says. Once you start to
see a little bit of a slowdown, thats when you see companies either consolidate
or go out of business. Weve got both Baker Hughes and Halliburton here in
the market. Well, Halliburtons buying Baker Hughes, so youre only going to

We had a lot more people come to the area from outside

of Pennsylvania because we didnt have local people that
could do the jobs. That was a big thing, because we

what the needs of the industry were.

have one of them surviving that way. Youll have two facilities, but thats the
type of stuff that takes place in this industry.
The peak of the Marcellus and Utica shales was only about five years
ago, but things can change quickly in the industry. Williams, a global energy
and communications company that moved into the state in the 1960s, relies
heavily on the Marcellus Shale for its production.
It definitely has an impact on our customers, therefore it has an impact
on us, says Jeremy Zeman, manager, commercial development for Williams
northeast region. Weve been working hard to try and connect the record
levels of natural gas that have been out there.
Williams has three locations in Pennsylvania: northeast, northwest
and southwest. It also runs compression stations near Williamsport. Weve
had really good success in northeastern Pennsylvania with some pretty
large quantities of natural gas that have been produced out of that area,
Zeman says.
Despite the slower time, the future looks bright for the Marcellus and
Utica shales. Fink believes the plays will be great producers of natural gas for
a long time because they are positioned well.
We dont see it dying off. This gas isnt going anywhere, Fink says.
Theyve invested significantly in terms of their resources. And while they are
large companies that could take and deal with the closing of a facility here in
the market, theyre not going to because they look at this as a long-term play,
a long-term investment. Theyre not going to put that type of resource into
some place its not worth it, especially given the fact that Pennsylvania is open
for business for natural gas development. GOMC

Eye on the Industry

REUSING OILFIELD
WASTEWATER
Chevron sells treated wastewater from oilfield
operations to drought-stricken farmers
By Cory Dellenbach

or farmers in California, the last

several years have been a struggle.
Hundreds of thousands of acres sit
idle as lakes dry up and rivers are reduced
to trickles.
Kern County, California, is one of the
countrys biggest agricultural counties,
producing over $6 billion in crop value
every year, but after three years of drought,
all that agriculture is on life support.

to Chevron spokesman Cameron Van Ast.

The oil products are removed prior to being
sold. The Cawelo Water District can then
mix the wastewater with freshwater, or offer
it untreated, depending on what crop it will
be used on and how much freshwater is
available at the time.
In the midst of a drought, there is
less freshwater, so the water the farmers
get is saltier than in a wet year, says

Chevron is being environmentally conscious, and this is a very beneficial

program, and its helped a lot of our farmers, helped our district, tremendously.
David Ansolabehere
The oilfield industry is trying to help
those struggling farmers now by reusing
water used in the oil production process.
CHEVRON WATER
For every barrel of oil Chevron produces
in its Kern River oilfield, another 10 barrels
of salty wastewater come with it. Now the
company is selling about 500,000 barrels of
water per day, or 21 million gallons, back to
the Cawelo Water District the local water
district that delivers water to farms within a
7-mile area of Kern County.
The sound of that water is music
to my ears, says David Ansolabehere,
general manager of the Cawelo Water
District. Chevron is being environmentally
conscious, and this is a very beneficial
program, and its helped a lot of our farmers,
helped our district, tremendously.
The wastewater Chevron is selling
flows to 90 local farmers who spread it on
their citrus, nut and grape crops, according
30

Ansolabehere. But the farmers understand

that using the salty wastewater on their
crops is an emergency measure. If all goes
as planned, when the rains come back the
excess salt will be flushed through the soil.
Over time high sodium can change
the properties of the soil, making it
impermeable, unable to take in any more
water, and plants would start to get salt burn.
The wastewater mixture sent to farmers is
rigorously monitored to keep from oversalting the soil, Ansolabehere says, adding
that it is tested quarterly for salts and boron.
The only reason this program works
is because Chevrons production water is of
very good quality, Ansolabehere says. So
maybe well have a little salt buildup, but
the next rain will flush it out.
STILL HESITANT
Tom Frantz is a small-time almond
farmer who lives about 6 miles from the
oilfields where the wastewater is pumped

into mixing basins. His 36 acres are in the

shadow of much larger operations such
as orange groves, pistachio farms and
rows and rows of almond trees. Hes been
farming in Kern County for all of his 65
years.
I would rather let my trees die than
use the Chevron water, Frantz says. Its
just not sustainable at all to use salty water,
no matter how much you dilute it. We can
farm here a long time, if were careful about
the salts that we apply.
Frantz also says he has little confidence
in how the oil industry wastewater is
regulated in his area, and he is concerned
by what still isnt known about the contents
of the wastewater.
TESTING THE WATER
California doesnt have statewide
regulations for recycling wastewater
for agriculture. Instead, nine regional
water boards issue permits to local water
districts. Once a year, the Cawelo Water
District is required to send data about the
salt and boron content to the Central Valley
Water Board, according to Clay Rodgers,
the boards assistant executive office. The
district isnt obligated to test for other
components like heavy metals, arsenic,
radioactive materials and chemicals that
might be used in the drilling process.
Ansolabehere says Cawelo has tested
for radioactive elements a couple of times
over the past 20 years, since its very
expensive to test for and it isnt required
by the board. Those tests have not turned
up any positive results.
In test results that were released
by Chevron on July 1, the water sold to
Kern County farmers showed no traces of
methylene chloride and industrial solvent
that had appeared in previous testing
conducted by a clean-water advocacy group.
Samples collected by the water
advocacy group Water Defense raised
concern that methylene chloride was
present in water used on thousands of
acres of farmland in the Central Valley. The
groups tests detected significant levels of
the chemical in samples collected in 2014
and in March from the water districts
distribution canal.

FREE INFO SEE ADVERTISER INDEX

Chevron, however, contested the testing methods and the results of

the analysis, which used water collected from various depths and taken over
a long period of time. In April, the Central Valley Regional Water Quality
Control Board, which oversees Chevrons oilfield wastewater recycling
program, ordered comprehensive screening of the irrigation water to check
for the presence of chemicals used in oil production.
Chevrons lab results which were submitted June 15, June 26 and
July 1 did not detect methylene chloride in any of the samples provided.
SLIGHT RELIEF
Roy Pierucci, a farmer who manages a 160-acre pistachio farm that falls
within the Cawelo Water District, says the unknowns about the Chevron
water wont deter him from using it.
Ive really never asked what the analysis of the water is. I just know
its available. There havent been any complaints about it. I dont think they
recommend drinking it, Pierucci says. If the drought keeps up year after
year, I think it would be a concern. I think the salt levels would be higher.
They blend it for a reason.
The Chevron water is vital to Pieruccis operation, but he knows he cant
use it forever. Its not going to save us, he says. Three years of drought have
left his pistachio trees near death, and if the drought persists another two or
three years hell have to start ripping out his trees and reducing the number of
acres he irrigates. You cant chase water forever. Sooner or later youre going
to lose. GOMC

Building the Business

ITS NOT ALWAYS

ABOUT THE MONEY
Motivating your best people to stick with your
company isnt about paying them more
By Ken Wysocky

eres an interesting factoid to chew

on the next time your organization
loses a great employee: Contrary
to popular belief, its usually not about
the money.
According to a study performed by
the Saratoga Institute, a leader in thirdparty exit interviewing, almost 90 percent
of managers believe employees leave
because theyve found better-paying jobs.
But the study also showed something far
more startling: In reality, only 12 percent
of employees actually leave for greater
financial rewards. And for the remaining
88 percent, theres little doubt that bad
managers play a strong role in prompting
them to hit the road.

Some people love to have their hands

held, and others just want you to give them
a target and let them go at it. Its your job
to manage them how they prefer to be
managed. It helps hold both you and the
employee accountable.
Mel Kleiman
This remarkable disconnect between
perception and reality lends credence to the
old adage that employees join companies,
but they leave managers. It also speaks
volumes about the power of denial how
difficult it is for the very people charged
with keeping employees engaged and on
board to take responsibility for turnover.
This is no small matter, given that some
experts believe the cost of staff turnover
stands between 50 to 150 percent of an
34

employees annual salary, depending on the

role and level of seniority.
So whats the solution if the problem
perhaps is, in a word, you? Perhaps youll take
some advice from consultant Mel Kleiman:
Become a magnetic manager the kind
of leader who attracts good employees and
keeps them with your company through
thick and thin.
Kleiman is the president and founder
of Humetrics (www.humetrics.com), a
consulting firm in Sugar Land, Texas, that
helps companies develop better hiring and
retention strategies. Hes also the author of
Hire Tough, Manage Easy: How to Find and
Hire the Best Hourly Employees and The Five
Firsts: A Simple System to On-Board, Engage
and Retain Top Talent.
MAGNETIC POWER
Kleiman says exit surveys show that
employees desire the five following things
from work: great co-workers, interesting
work, growth and opportunity, a familyfriendly environment, and recognition.
And magnetic managers can play a role in
enhancing each of those areas by hiring great
people for jobs, establishing expectations,
holding themselves and their employees
accountable, communicating openly, and
giving credit where credit is due.
Magnetic managers only let great
people in the door, he emphasizes. Dont
waste your time on mediocrity hiring
great people will make your job much
easier. And set expectations right away
Tell people what you want and what they
should expect.
Many supervisors overlook a simple but
powerful tool in their managerial arsenal:
recognizing an employee for a job well done.

Our society is addicted to recognition,

he asserts. Yet a Gallup poll shows 60
percent of employees never receive it
even though its an easy thing for managers
to do, takes little time and doesnt have to
cost even a penny.
When Kleiman speaks at seminars,
he often asks attendees if they have ever
received a written letter of recognition from
a manager.
Out of 100 people, maybe 15 will
raise their hands, he notes. And most
of them know exactly where that letter is,
whether its framed and hanging on a wall or
in their desk or in a file. That speaks to how
valuable it is to them.
PRACTICE THE FIVE FIRSTS
What happens on an employees first
day on the job is also critical to long-term
retention. Anyone who disputes that notion
should consider the typical first question a
new employee gets from a spouse or friends
after that critical first eight hours on the
clock: How was your day?
The answer needs to be, Fabulous,
Kleiman asserts.
To ensure that response, he says
managers should follow the first point in
what he calls the five firsts: Make the first
hour of the first day the best hour any
employee will ever have on a job.
Most employees start on Mondays,
which are feverishly busy. As a result, too
many employees are asked to spend hours
filling out forms, talking with human
resources people or even just drinking
coffee until their manager has time to pay
attention to them.
What you should do is ask the new
employee to come in an hour early so
you can have some uninterrupted time
together, he suggests, noting they usually
are pleased by the special treatment. You
only get one chance to make a really good
first impression Make that first hour
the best hour they ever had at work, and
they wont realize for six months how bad
you are!
During that hour, be sure to explain
why the employees job is important to
the organization. Also tell them why they
were chosen for the job (which, as a bonus,

FREE INFO SEE ADVERTISER INDEX

establishes job expectations) and tell them what happens if they dont do their
job well. Then find out how they want to be managed, which establishes an
open line of communication, Kleiman says.
Employees love to be asked how they want to be managed, and managers
should love hearing about it, he notes. Some people love to have their hands
held, and others just want you to give them a target and let them go at it. Its
your job to manage them how they prefer to be managed. It helps hold both you
and the employee accountable.
Managers should also comply with the other four firsts:
Meet at the end of the first day to find out how things went. Dont let
them go home frustrated, Kleiman says.
Do the same thing at the end of the first week. The most important thing
is communicate, communicate, communicate, Kleiman emphasizes.
Give the employee their first paycheck in person, not via direct deposit
into a bank account. This gives you an opportunity to tell them
firsthand all the good things they did to earn it, he points out. Or
maybe to tell them they need to turn it up a notch. If youre not honest,
youre just setting them up for failure. How can you expect people to do
things right if youre not telling them what theyre doing wrong?
Meet again after the first 30 days to review the employees first month
on the job.
In closing, Kleiman points out that its usually the best employees who
leave for greener pastures. So to avoid this kind of damaging and costly turnover,
managers should honestly take stock of their managerial shortcomings and
address areas that require shoring up. Is it easy? No. Will it take discipline
and effort? No doubt. But the reward is employees who stick to their managers
like steel to a magnet, even if another company offers them a job with a higher
salary. Remember, its not always about the money. GOMC

SLASHING

DOWNTIME
Seal welding technology allows for better operation in offshore drilling
By Henk-Williem Sanders

THE OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS SECTOR HAS BEEN GOING

strong since the late 1940s; however, as the industry continues to move
toward even more demanding offshore applications in order to drill deeper
and reach farther, the use of floating production, storage and off-loading
(FPSO) vessels has become particularly popular. Eliminating the need to
lay expensive long-distance pipelines from
the processing facility to an onshore terminal,
the FPSO is suitable for remote or deepwater
locations where seabed pipelines are not
cost-effective.
But, while offshore facilities have opened
the vast frontier of the worlds oceans to oil
and gas exploration and production, they have

any industry, every moment saved in downtime means significant cost savings
for the operator. This white paper will consider why optimizing the design,
operability and safety of FPSOs has never been more important if downtime
is to be combated, and will focus on the development of new seal welding
solutions that have been specifically designed to help operators do this.
(continued)

The idea to solve this issue of

offshore maintenance was an
obvious one to remove and
replace the seal in situ on the
FPSO offshore.
also resulted in new and unique challenges.
For example, while FPSOs can provide an
economically attractive solution for smaller
oilfields that can be exhausted in a few years

AN ISSUE OF DOWNTIME
While originally all oil platforms sat on the seabed,
as exploration moved to deeper waters and more distant
locations in the 1970s, floating production systems
were developed and introduced. A viable solution that
brought with it significant advantages including the
ability to move production to a new location once the
field became depleted, this technology quickly proved
popular, and now over 200 vessels are currently
deployed worldwide as FPSOs.
However, along with new benefits came new
challenges, and it wasnt long before the maintenance
of these facilities became a hot topic setting the offshore
agenda. This is because with a number of component
failures able to easily lead an FPSO to a shutdown that
requires onshore maintenance, the cost and traveling
time required to return an FPSO to shore can very
quickly add up.
As such, reliability, safety and flexibility
are of key importance when securing maximum
uptime for an FPSO facility, and offshore operators
are continually on the lookout for ways to reduce the chance of an
FPSO shutdown, avoiding the associated downtime that must occur
for maintenance.

Seals are vital when it comes to ensuring the continued

efficient and safe operation of an FPSO swivel stack.
KEEPING OPERATIONS AFLOAT
A critical element on board an FPSO facility, the swivel stack is the heart
of the turret, mooring and fluid transfer system. The swivel ensures that all
fluids (liquids and gas), controls and power are transferred safely from the
geostationary components (wells, flow lines, manifolds, risers) to the rotating
vessel and its process plant, under any environmental conditions.
Seals are vital when it comes to ensuring the continued efficient and
safe operation of an FPSO swivel stack. Replacement of the seals in a swivel
stack requires the FPSO to travel back to shore so that components can be
completely disassembled and seals replaced. In fact, this whole operation
is extremely time-consuming and requires huge preparation time; typically,
the FPSO would be down for between six and 12 weeks, and the cost of that
could rise to hundreds of millions of dollars.
With every second saved in downtime being an addition to the bottom
line of the operator, cutting out the traveling time required to return an FPSO
to shore for a seal replacement could provide operators with a huge financial
saving in downtime.
SIMPLE IDEA, HIGH-TECH SOLUTION
The idea to solve this issue of offshore maintenance was an obvious one
to remove and replace the seal in situ on the FPSO offshore. However,
to actually do this and create a technique that would fulfill this idea was
not so simple.
38

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - SEPTEMBER 2015

It would require the development of a technique that would bond the

ends of a cut seal offshore, something that would prove extremely difficult.
Adding to the challenge, seal welding has to be possible when other swivels
are still in production this could be extremely high risk without special
safety features incorporated into the welding equipment. Furthermore, the
equipment would need to be portable so it can be transported to the FPSO,
and a committed and fully trained service team put together that could go out
to the FPSOs to perform the operation.
A commonly used technique for leading manufacturers of seals is billets
welding. However, dedicated to meeting the wants and needs of the offshore
operators through innovation, some manufacturers have been working to
provide an enhanced solution. Investing significant time and resources
they have been able to develop a viable, fully tested portable system that
will replace seals in situ by optimizing the billets welding technique for a
seal profile.
A STEP-CHANGE SOLUTION
The latest in seal welding technology has more than met the challenge
and is set to revolutionize the FPSO market. An example of this innovation
can be seen by Trelleborg Sealing Solutions.
Trelleborg has developed a new seal that, manufactured from its
established seal material, can be welded on the platform without the need to
return to shore. By using a well-established and proven material as opposed to
a modified substance, Trelleborg has been able to avoid integrating something
that has not been fully tested into the new system to ensure full compliancy
and reliability for the offshore operator.
In a controlled manufacturing area, Trelleborg starts the process by
producing a seal that has been cut in one place using a specially designed
tool. The product is then packed so that it is well protected and avoids any
damage in transit.
Offshore, on board the FPSO, the seal is unpacked and installed onto
the swivel by highly trained personnel from Trelleborgs service team; the
skilled engineer installs it in the weld head enclosure (part of the welding

FREE INFO SEE ADVERTISER INDEX

machine) which, certified to ATEX zone 1, is then pressurized so that the

welding can take place. Fully enclosed, production on other swivel stacks can
continue without risk.
A control cabinet, which is purged and will also be certified to ATEX
zone 1, ensures the smooth running of the process, as well as monitoring and
logging all data. After the process is finished, the seal is safely removed from
the weld head enclosure before being polished and checked. If the values from
the recorded data are satisfactory, the seal will be released for installation.
CONCLUSION
Safety on FPSOs is of paramount importance, and in the harsh offshore
oil and gas industry, operators must take every precaution to minimize risk
at every turn. But at the same time, spiraling maintenance costs and project
downtime has proven to be a real issue for the offshore sector.
With seal welding a requirement for the smooth running of the FPSO
swivel stack, a critical element of operations, replacement involving a melting
process has always had to be conducted offshore, resulting in extremely
costly and time-consuming downtime for the facility as the FPSO has to be
disconnected.
As such, for many years there has been a desire for a safe and reliable
alternative to this process that can be carried out in situ. However, after
years of development, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has created a fully tested,
portable system that is not only set to make life for the offshore operator safer
and easier, but also dramatically improve the bottom line for the oil company.

SOLUTION FOR THE SAND

New product tackles silica dust exposure for workers at frac sites

t has become clear that silica dust

exposure is a significant health
issue facing the oil and gas industry.
The Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) has included a
hazard alert on its website indicating that
contact with this substance is a threat to
those conducting hydraulic fracturing
operations.

The Preferred DC technology is applied onto

the proppant via a unique, patent-pending,
spray application device, reducing the
generation of dust from the frac sand during
its transport, transloading, conveying and offloading of the proppant at all points from the
manufacturing location to the well site.

Workers who breathe silica on a regular

or repeated basis are at an increased risk
of developing silicosis, a lung disease that
can cause inflammation, scarring and a
reduced ability to take in oxygen, according
to OSHA. In addition, silica can cause lung
cancer and has been linked to a variety of
other diseases, including tuberculosis and
both kidney and autoimmune disease.
A study led by the National Institute
for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) further illustrates the extent of
the issue. A total of 116 air samples were
collected from 11 hydraulic fracturing
sites across Arkansas, Colorado, North
Dakota, Pennsylvania and Texas in
order to evaluate and better understand

industry worker exposure to respirable

crystalline silica.
NIOSH discovered that 47 percent
of the samples exceeded OSHAs current
permissible exposure limits (PELs) and 79
percent of the samples exceeded NIOSHs
recommended exposure limits (RELs).
Even more disturbing, perhaps, is that 31
percent of all the samples collected were 10
or more times the REL, with one sample
over 100 times this benchmark.
ADDRESSING THE ISSUE
With increased penalties, OSHAs
impending lower PEL of silica dust, and
the associated health risks of silica dust
exposure, DustPRO says the launch of
its flagship product couldnt have hit the
market at a better time.
Its silica-dust-control solution, developed in collaboration with The Dow
Chemical Company, is designed to help
oilfield service, exploration and production companies meet both current and
future silica dust exposure limits by
reducing airborne particles during all sand
transfer points.

personal samples from eight different frac

sites, with 98 percent of those samples
below the current PEL of 100 g/m3, notes
McQuesten. Our IH results continue to
improve. Our latest results show that when
using DustPRO, operators can consistently
meet or be below 25 g/m3 for all personnel
tested on site.
According to McQuesten, the need
for this type of product is only growing as
each year passes. The NIOSH study used
data from sites visited in 2010 and 2011,
he notes, and in 2015 proppant intensive
wells use anywhere from two to 10 times
the amount of sand compared to 2011.
Workers at the actual frac sites are
the ones presented with the biggest risk,
adds McQuesten, but anyone who handles
the sand is also in danger, including
the terminal operators and surrounding
community members near well sites.
The health and safety of workers
throughout the oil and gas industry
remains the driving force behind each

in terms of pricing, and the company currently works with a number of the
major E&Ps and oilfield service companies.
We truly believe that we are improving the work environment at a frac
site, and I say that because of the feedback weve gotten, he notes. Weve
gone to a number of different frac sites, and the people on site have nothing
but positive things to say about DustPRO.
Nearly 300,000 tons of DustPRO treated sand have been pumped at oil
and gas well sites across North America to date. Currently, the company can
deliver up to 3 metric tons a year but has intentions of growing to 20 metric
tons a year by the end of 2015.
I believe that we are just scratching the surface with DustPRO, he adds.
DustPRO is a platform to bring other dual purpose proppant technologies to
the industry through a cost-effective flash coating process. Its a tough market
out there. Commodity prices are half of where they were last fall. We need to
continue to innovate, continue to drive down that cost per BOE, and proppant
is a big piece of completion costs.
The company intends to introduce its next product on the DustPRO
platform this summer. GOMC

Chemical Pumps
6. Fluid Metering PDS100
Valveless, ceramic PDS100 metering
pumps from Fluid Metering ensure that the
stage up to full-scale production is successful.
They routinely meter monomers, catalysts, food
additives, acids, extraction solvents, alternative
fuels, water treatment chemicals, and viscous
fluids and slurries. The sapphire-hard internal
components eliminate accuracy drift typical
of pumping systems that rely on valves and
elastomers to move fluid through the pump.
They provide a valveless rotating/reciprocation
piston design that eliminates the need for check
valves, which can clog, leak or fail over time.
The result is maintenance-free, drift-free fluid
control that will hold an accuracy of 1 percent
or better for millions of cycles. Flow rates can
be infinitely controlled either mechanically and/
or electronically via standard industrial control
protocols. Flow control is viscosity independent
for added flow rate stability. 800/223-3388;

Drilling Rigs
14. Foremost Dual Rotary drill
Dual Rotary drills from Foremost have two
rotary drives, including a lower drive that is used
to advance steel casing through unconsolidated
overburden such as sand, gravel, glacial till and
boulders. The lower drive feeds and rotates the
casing independently of the top drive. The casing
is held securely in the lower drive by a set of poweroperated jaws. Once the desired casing depth
is reached, it continues drilling open-hole like a
conventional top-drive drill. There is no need to
trip out or change tools when transitioning to openhole drilling. The independent rotary top drive
simultaneously handles a drill string, which can be
equipped with a down-the-hole hammer, tri-cone
or drag bit. Cuttings are typically evacuated with
air, but drills can also be configured with pumps
for mud or flooded reverse-circulation drilling.

Case Study

Pumps, Valves, Instrumentation and Drilling Equipment

By Craig Mandli
WATER PUMP STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 10,000 HOURS IN SERVICE
Problem
A high-volume-jet water pump has been working on board a sand dredger, belonging to the Dutch company De Vries
& van de Wiel since May 2010. This 20-inch BBA pump has worked flawlessly without significant maintenance
since the first commissioning. After more than 10,000 hours of service, the drive a V12 diesel engine needed a
complete overhaul. During this work BBA Pumps was requested to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the pump
that has been operating routinely over its maximum allowable speed.

Solution
Joop Buitenhuis, a field service engineer with BBA Pumps, carried out the inspection job on board the vessel, together
with an employee of De Vries & van de Wiel. The BA-C500S11 pump, with a volute weighing over 4,000 pounds, was
removed in order to have a good view of the wearing parts. The heat-treated stainless steel wear rings and ductile iron
impeller showed minimal wear and tear, and the shaft sealing system was not yet in need of replacement.

Result
According to Buitenhuis, the pump can run at least a few more years before the first components need to be replaced.
The high pump efficiency of 86 percent has also contributed to the good condition of the pump, says Buitenhuis. As a result, the axial and radial forces on the
turning parts are very well balanced and that contributes to their extended working life. 843/849-3676; www.bbapumps.com. GOMC

around water, one-person operation
By Ed Wodalski
The Model 5 6062 0010 Wide Mouth AirBand
pneumatic band saw with stainless steel housing
and planetary gearbox from CS Unitec uses 43 cfm
of air at 90 psi to cut pipe, conduit, bolts, cable,
angle iron, I-beams and structural steel. It has a
cutting capacity of 8 inches round or 9- by 8-inch
rectangular when used free hand.
It can cut 4- and 6-inch gas pipe very quickly,
says Scott Saunders, regional manager for CS
Unitec. Its portable. You can go in the field. One
person can make a cut. You dont need two or three
guys helping him out. So thats a savings.
The 35-pound saw with 1.3 hp variable-speed
motor is safe to use around water and is ATEX
certified for hazardous environments (EXII2GcT5),
reducing the need for hot zone work permits. It has
a variable blade speed of 4.0 to 4.9 fps. Saw blades
are made of M42 steel with 8 percent cobalt for heat
and wear resistance.

One big thing for safety is

this band saw has covers on both
sides, Saunders says. Theres really no
way for a wheel or tire to injure the operator.
All that is exposed is the blade that does the
cutting.
Made in Germany, the 30 3/4-inch saw
has a 1/2-inch NPT air connection and can cut
steel, stainless steel, Inconel, chrome, Hastelloy,
aluminum, copper, iron, fiberglass, plastics and
wood. Applications include heavy-duty sub-sea
cutting, offshore oil, refineries, chemical plants,
marine and demolition industries.
The same tool is available in electric, 6-amp,
110-volt, 3.0-7.4 fps or hydraulic with a 1.6 hp,
2,000 psi at 4 gpm, 4.2 fps blade speed versions.
