Malhar 2013

Zara Hatke

Youre waking up to the same routine, day in and day out.

Running the same streets, taking the same trains, trying to
swallow the same thoughts. But enough is enough. Youve
done this for far too long. Its time to stop following the
herd.
You struggle through obstacles and confront the question
which everybody inevitably asks. Why? This Malhar, we
urge you to ask yourself another question. A question that
could open doors, that could do away with your inhibition,
and give you control. This Malhar, we urge you to ask
yourself, why not? All it takes for change is that one idea
the one that hasnt been done to death, the one that
doesnt fit in that one idea makes all the difference.
Think out-of-the-box, somersault over the boundary,
stand confidently in the wings and wait for the spotlight
to shine on you. This is your chance to do things the way
you like, to do them differently. Take charge of your ideas.
Shatter the obvious.
With a host of refreshing new events, an enthraling lineup of speakers, irresistible performances and absorbing
exhibitions, celebrate the different at Malhar 2013.
The beginning of everything great is something new.
Chalo, lets be zara hatke.

SOCIAL CAUSE
Run for a cause
Dear Malharite,
This year, we do more than invite you to stand up for a cause.
We ask you to run for it.
Feel the adrenaline rush. Let your heartbeat race.
Join in. Run Intended.
For often, championing a cause begins with getting your
message heard. Make this yours.
Solefully yours.

Visit to an old-age home

There are lots of specials days and moments in our lives.
Moments we cherish and certainly want to relive. This year,
Workshops Inc. has dedicated a day to add to the special
moments of the residents of an old age home. It will be a
festive day filled with games, good food and music to express
our gratitude and thank our senior citizens. This Malhar,
Workshops Inc. chooses to honour the elderly by giving them
a day of happiness, and reminding them how much they mean
to us.

Issued in Pupil Interest

An event that promises to fill you with nostalgic joy and
make you reminisce the good old days in school. Inviting
you to create the very same charts we made and learned
from as children. This is your turn to teach those much
younger to walk their first steps in the world of languages,
mathematics and so on. Let your creativity be unabashed
and your simplicity disarming. Let your imagination run
riot. Think as children do.
Participants are required to send in their chart designs
based on a theme, which will be announced at the CL
Meet.
Entries will have to be mailed to us and will then be
uploaded in an album on our Facebook page.
The designs will be judged by our panel. Additionally
there is also a viewers choice prize for the design that
gets the most likes in our Facebook album.
The winning designs will be printed and given to schools
in need of such teaching aid.
Please note: Files must be in .cdr or.ai format.
Revisit your childhood. Recreate that classroom board.

What's Back

TranspArEncy

Last year, CLs left Malhar satisfied that their contingents

had been scored fairly. In keeping with that success, we
bring back transparency this year!
Scoresheets will be put on display an hour after the event
has concluded and will be on display for the duration of an
hour only on the final days of Malhar.
Only CLs or ACLs will be entertained with respect to any
queries. The Contingent Leader of each college will be
entertained only once within the duration of each session.
Once the session has concluded, the scoresheets for the
session will not be shown afterwards. Contingents are
requested to refrain from coming without cause and a
courteous approach from all is requested.

Chaka chak
Chaka Chak is back this year! Hundreds of excited
participants, the cool blue sea and a soon-to-be
pristine beach. Lets bring back the beauty of the
citys beaches in a clean-up drive, Malhar style! Its
all in a days work.
Participating contingents are required to help
clean up a given beach.
Location and dates will be announced at the CL
meet.

YARD SALE

We came, we sold, we conquered!

The Yard Sale is back bigger and better.
Once again, lets get together to put a smile on the faces of
underprivileged children. Spread the joy of a new doll or a
spine-chilling detective novel with a stranger. Plunge into
the heaps of things and find what you thought was nowhere
to be found or too expensive or out of stock, at throwaway
prices! Remember, one mans junk is another mans treasure!
So come join us at the Yard Sale! Fill your shopping bag with
not only a lot of affordable goodies but also a bucket load
of good karma, as all proceeds go to charity. Lets make a
difference.

AMATEUR NIGHT
Malhar 13 celebrates the different, acknowledging however,
that difference often manifests within the framework of
conventionality. This year, we bring back Am Night, an
opportunity for you to shine. We give you a stage and the
spotlight. You take it from there. Choose from an array of
genres, Hindustani to jazz, Ghazals to Country, drums to
the tabla, Sitars to guitars, and take the audience into an
alternate world of musical exhilaration. For all those waiting
to be discovered, waiting to be heard, this is your chance!

15

16

17

The Sea-God has but a thousand eyes,

The Wind-God, a Hundred,
You and I Only Two
These two eyes often narrow our vision down to the
simplistic takes on issues that we havent had the chance
to fully explore. In a world filled with many such matters,
reaching consensus involves ideation and discussion
viewing things from different perspectives, weighing
matters by their worth and finding space to accommodate
other viewpoints.
As a platform appealing to those interests that are closest
to us and providing for deliberation on those matters that
innately affect us, Malhar Conclave 2013 will be more
than mere discussion it will be about interaction and
fascination, the longing to know more , the desire to probe
further.
Its not about reaching conclusions, its about the journey
that takes us there; its not about traversing the well-laid
path, its about creating your own way; where you wont be
taught an opinion, but be provided with perspective.
Its time to think afresh.
Socho, Zara Hatke.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Individuality. Inimitability. Inspiration.
With illustrious precedents in Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Binayak
Sen, P. Sainath and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the
Keynote Address at Malhar Conclave has, through the years,
been witness to some of the most stirring discourses on
matters of consequence.
This year too, Malhar Conclave will play host to an
eminent luminary who is sure to enthral the audience
with a combination of charisma and vast experience. This
Independence Day, witness a great contemporary mind
interact with the nations youth.

ON THE CONTRARY
Debate Forum

Do you think that newshour nights arent enough to decipher

the argumentation for and against issues that are relevant
to our progress? Or that passionate rhetoric snubs logical
thinking in public forums today? If so, On the Contrary is for
you.
Hear two eminent speakers battle out their standpoints in
a moderated debate, on a topic that prevents either from
sitting on the fence. By choice, not compulsion. With reason,
not rhetoric.

19

The Rise of Radicalism:

A 21st Century Perspective
Panel Discussion
From Naxal strongholds and Taliban territory, to military
quarters and political propaganda. Not confined to
indoctrination camps and conflict zones, manifest equally
in election rhetoric and primetime media. In countries
throughout the world, even ones that claim to champion
democracy, liberalism and inclusiveness. Transcending
boundaries and provoking the peaceful.
Radicalism is on the rise.
Are we fighting it today with its own methods? Should we
believe the simplistic, one-sided opinions we hear? Are we
being made to see only in black and white? Is extremism
permeating our own rationale and overpowering our
judgement?
Malhar Conclave 13 poses questions on the rise of radicalism
in the 21st century and, with a panel of distinguished
speakers, will attempt to address a problem that at best, is
grey at the extremes.

20

Interactive Sessions
The diversity of ideas is a celebration of a world full of
possibilities. With engaging speakers from different walks of
life, be they scientific, cultural, literary or artistic, interactive
sessions at Malhar Conclave 2013 will go beyond the
traditional boundaries of the expected, pushing horizons
and exploring extraordinary schools of thought.

21

22

ADMIN
Just as Gotham cannot survive without Batman, Malhar
couldnt possibly go on without Admin. Admin maintains
all the cogs and bolts that make Malhar roll right from
inviting colleges to organising the distribution of passes
to calculating the scores for every event to registrations
Admin does it all.
Like the best behind the scene performers, Admin is the
backbone of Malhar, tying all the events together, walking
the talkies, knighting the victorious and smoothening the
ruffled feathers of contingents. Without Admin, Malhar
would fall over into a paralyzed heap of events with
visitors without passes, unregistered participants and
teams without trophies.
Nobody notices what we do until we dont do it!

23

Conclave

Inviting you to look at issues of relevance in a newer, fresher

light, Conclave this year is proud to diversify itself culturally,
artistically and socially. With events putting you in the
shoes of changemakers championing causes and Cabinets
controlling crises, the familiar sounds of fiery arguments and
clashing opinions will be accompanied by the creation of witty
caricatures, viral videos and trending campaigns. Innovate,
and your ingenuity will be awarded.

33

#TrendForChange
Campaign Construction event
Never doubt that a small group of committed
people can change the world. In fact, it is the
only thing that ever does.
Margaret Mead
In a world plagued by innumerable social evils,
effective use of the media around us to foster
positive change is the need of the hour. This
year, at Malhar, we invite you to create your own
campaign in an attempt to champion a cause you
truly care about.
Participating teams will be provided with a list
of topics two weeks before Malhar. They will
have to create a campaign for any one of them.
They are encouraged to present campaign ideas
as they would appear on multiple mediums such
as print, television, radio, outdoor, transit, social
media etc. Teams may also create a campaign
logo, a jingle, etc.

Disputed Territory

T1

Debate Event

It is said that it is better to debate an issue without

settling it than settle an issue without debating it
and we couldnt agree more. Disputed Territory
is an event where mindless rhetoric will give
way to logical argumentation and where skillful
rebuttals will mean more than merely having the
last word.
Elims:
Each participant shall speak either for or against
a given topic for a stipulated time of 60 seconds.
The preparation time allotted before the speech
is also 60 seconds.

Elims:
1 min

Format for the semi-finals and finals will be

revealed on the spot.
Please Note:
Topics will be given on the spot.
A maximum of two contingent entries from
each college will be allowed.

Classroom

Judging Criteria: Logical reasoning, Articulation,

Persuasiveness, Argumentation.

36

Caricapture
News Cartooning Event
The constant cacophony of opinions being
vented left, right and centre cries out for a simpler
viewpoint something that gets a message
across with just a glance. We at Conclave believe
that a cartoon is worth a thousand words and
will let you do just that capture the essence of
an opinion with a simplistic depiction.
Participants will be given a series of fictitious
news stories on the day of the event. They will
then have to choose any two topics and depict
their take on them in a cartoon format.

1-2

ETC
Years have passed. People have come and gone. History has
been written and rewritten. Even snakes have been on a
plane. And yet, there has always been that gaping void, that
deep longing, that constant need for change. Change, yes.
Something that reminds you to smell that sock youve
worn for over 3 days. Change is what you need the most
when that guy at the dairy shop refuses to give you curd
when you hand him a 50 rupee bill. Change the system, the
leader, the society and even the song. So whats new about
change? Why do people care about it so much?
Well to be honest, we really dont know. Too bad, because
were busy making awesome events and fillers that blow
participants minds (Well, more or less figuratively).

We represent none of that.

Raga is the official writing department of Malhar. We
embody creativity, sleep with humour, and scorn ignorance.
And we are everywhere, being shoved ungratefully into
your unsuspecting hands, lying on lonely tables slyly judging
your lapses in grammar, and throwing in commas wherever
required. Malhar, in all technicalities, is a raga. And we
wholeheartedly represent that.

79

RAGA

Raga is one of the melodic modes in Indian classical music,

an essential part without which more than a few legends
would not be remembered. The beauty of a raga lies in its
open-ended interpretation, where man and music merge to
form a holy being bereft of all the sufferings of the world.

ASSISTANCE
Assistance is primarily an internal crowd control and venue
management department. We ensure that there is no
commotion caused anywhere due to unruly behaviour or
prohibited substances being used on the college premises.
As the second-largest management department, we have
four sub-departments halls, foyer, judges and floors.
Assistance also handles first aid and we have a doctor on
campus to deal with medical emergencies. In collaboration
with Security, we execute emergency evacuations and
request you to cooperate with us in such situations.
We ensure that Malhar is an enjoyable and hassle-free
experience for everybody.
Please note:
No food & beverages are permitted at event venues.
Photography and video recording are strictly prohibited.

FINANCE
Money is our madness, our vast collective madness.
David Herbert Lawrence.
Finance mediates all monetary transactions concerned
with the day-to-day workings of the workforce as well
as the intricacies of the finale. It undertakes the tedious
task of collecting, recording and tallying the paperwork
involved with every penny spent. In coordination with
other departments, we also contribute to the processes of
distributing prizes and certificates to participants.

COMPUTERS

Cats smile. Tiny CATS.
15 computers, and 4 months of working into the dark
summer nights.
Computers - The department that serves you with
tech-gyaan to satiate your virtual appetite.
Tranquil, we capture Malhar Moments in stills, but still
manage to make Malhar-text hyper.
We design, entwined in the blanket of Larrys frigid love,
but not confined when fixes factor; figure facile fixing.
We embrace the world with our feet and in our small way,
help Malhar stand up on its own.
We are The high-fiver of Wi-fi.

The creator of creatives.
The slinger of interwebs...
Computers.

GRAFFIX
Do you think Caravaggio could paint eleven square feet
backdrops? Well, we can and we do.
Were the portal that helps you cross over from everyday
life to the craziness that is Malhar. We transform the
archaic walls of Xaviers into a celebration of the theme. We
complete the Malhar experience with our magnificent art
and inspired dcor. Who are we? Were Graffix, and were
here to give Photoshop some serious competition.
With a replica of Hogwarts to customize and our magical
paraphernalia of brushes, paints and glue,we bring Malhar
out of its posters and onto the walls each year. Our
backdrops and installations always speak for themselves
because we dont believe in labeling our art.
Our sub-department, Calligraphy, ensures that not one
name that contributes to Malhar goes unrecorded.
So if you find yourself lost in our massive castle-like college
or places that look like theyve apparated from another
world, you know who wielded the wand!

118

HOSPITALITY
Hospitality is a pleasant melange of love, food and service,
accompanied by a heart-warming smile. We are the
department that satiates the hunger and thirst of the
workforce who toil day and night to make Malhar a success.
Our hospitality is extended to numerous outstation
students and we cater to their needs by ensuring
comfortable accommodation, an enjoyable stay and the
complete Malhar experience.
You ask for help and we provide it!
Please Note:
Food will not be provided to the CL or participants. They
may patronize the stalls on campus.

Sales & MARKETING

Right from the people who project vibrating air as mobile
services to the man at the signal on the streets hoping
to make a living off selling newspapers everyone has
something that everyone else is willing to buy.
We call, we negotiate, and we close.
Be it a fat year, be it a lean year, we make it rain.

119

Some men are born great; some achieve greatness... and
most hire Public Relations Officers. Public Relations
ensures that every individual takes away a unique Malhar
experience. Right from the updates about our theme to
every event detail you need or simply want, we bring Malhar
to you like no one else does. Our aim is to always keep you

TECHNICALS
The only lights that we know of are the explosions that
bring Street, Bollywood and every other event in Malhar
that you love to life. At Texxx, we like to believe that Malhar
would not be Malhar without the light and sound that we
bring to the table.
Technical guidelines:
All CDs must be in Audio CD format only.
Music cannot be played through a pen drive, iPod,
laptop, mobile phone etc.
All CDs must be submitted to the Texxx desk immediately
after the registration process for the respective event
has been completed, labeled with your college code, the
event name and performance number.

124

Mp3 CDs, audio or video tapes will not be accepted.

All performance CDs must be cued in advance in order,
containing only the tracks that have to be played during
that specific event. You will not be allowed to cue the
CD before the event using our equipment. The technical
team cannot be held responsible for any miscue.
All CDs must be collected from the Texxx desk
immediately after the performance has been completed.
We will not be held accountable if you are unreasonably
late in collecting the CD.
We will not take responsibility for any CD related glitches
such as skipping, format/CD not being recognized.
No professionals and/or CAs/CLs/ACLs will be permitted
to operate the technical equipment. The equipment will
be only operated by the Malhar technical crew.
For each event, one CA will be allowed at the Texxx desk
and one CA will be permitted to be backstage. For events
in the hall, it is compulsory to have one CA at the Texxx
desk if you have any sound and light requirements.
Black outs are permitted for Hall events.
Additional light and sound props such as bulbs, tube
lights, microphones etc, will not be permitted.
There will be a reasonable time limit provided for
the setup of each event. Exceeding this limit would
reduce your performance time, which may lead to the
termination of your performance.
On-stage equipment will not be rearranged for any
performance.
Sound and light demos will be not given on the day of
the event. A sound and light demo will take place on a
different date and it is compulsory for at least one CA/
CL/ACL to be present at this demo.
The use of electric guitars for each respective events

125

are permitted, however the use of any distortion effects

will not be permitted. Violation of this may result in the
termination of the performance.
Keyboard players are not allowed to use any prerecorded patches.
A basic script with all the sound and light requirements
and cues should be submitted at the participant meet. It
is compulsory for all drama events.
A detailed list of all the instruments being used must be
submitted during the participant meet.
A drum kit with all hardware and cymbals will be
provided. However, you are allowed to use your own
cymbals and kick pedal.
All technical queries must be cleared in advance during
the CL meet.
Any relative query should be cleared with a member of
the technical department.
