The one who was seated on the
throne said, "See, I am making all
things newI am the Alpha and the
Omega, the beginning and the
end. (Revelation 21:5-6)
As I write this I am waiting to hear that the wire
transfer is complete and St. Francis, through the Diocese
of Missouri, now owns 602 Brewster Avenue in Eureka.
This morning as I sat in my rocking chair and prayed I
didnt see our new church building, I heard it. I heard the
sounds of childrens excited voices. I heard little feet
scampering down hallways. I heard a group of men and
women reciting the Serenity Prayer together, as they conducted a 12-step meeting. I heard our organ being played
in an acoustically resonant space. I heard us praying together on Sunday morning. I heard us talking and laughing in our community space, as we enjoyed food and fellowship.
The new thing that God is doing through us is all
about people, about relationships. It actually has very little to do with land and building. The land and building
are a means to an end, the goal being to spread the love of
Christ, refashioning the world so it matches Gods vision
for all of creation. We are so blessed that this next step is
possible to have a space in which we invite people in to
deeper relationship with God. A space where we send

people out renewed and fed, to address the needs of the world. A space where we
gather to hear Gods word, to listen to each others truth, to be known, and to enjoy
one anothers company. A space that is open to the community to find their own joy,
healing, and sense of belonging.
We are on our pilgrim way together. As God does day after day, God is making all things news. Hallelujah!

I didnt even hear the 4 a.m. alarm, but my husband, Phil did and was up and
ready to get out the door. Are you going to join me outside to watch the meteor
shower? My sleepy brain was able to minutely recall that we had talked about this
the night before. In no time I was up, outside in the darkness, looking up at the early
dawn sky. Success! Theres one! Oh, oh there goes another! I had a vague vision of past Fourth of July fireworks shows only with the audio on mute! We were
out meteor gazing again later that day along with our kids sitting around the back
patio in the dark. The following morning, Phil and I were out there a third time
watching these extraordinary streaks of light pass far above us.
I discovered that meteor gazing was spiritual in nature. There was ample time in
between meteor passes, so my mind wandered as I kept my gaze skyward.
We had come across some of the general rules that were posted on the Internet
for Perseid meteor watching. I have listed them below. Behind them, Ive listed
some loose general thoughts of my own for watching for God.
1. You need darkness for meteor gazing, get as far away as possible from artificial light. With God, one wants to move toward the light (the light of Christ), and
out of the darkness. What have the times of darkness been in my life? How often
am I looking or searching for the light of Gods love to be revealed?
2. Make yourself available at very odd hours of the night. With God, any hour
of the day works. Do I search for Gods presence in the ordinary events of my day
with the same intentionality as we did when watching the meteor showers?
3. Get comfortable, use a reclining lawn chair to alleviate the strain on the
neck. With God, settle into the gentle and cradling arms of the Creator, peace and
solace can be found there.
4. Be patient, there will be lulls in the meteor show. With God, patience is important also. Gods timetable is unique to God alone.
5. The meteors will be bright and moving quickly. With God, we hope we can

This week we made a play dough symbol that completed the phrase God is as good
as grapes, snowman, mashed potatoes, scallops, shrimp, fish, octopus, turtles,
tigers, and seal/sea lion.
Then we made an imitator of God collage and illustrated God-like qualities such as
love, compassion, peace, happy, beauty, sharing, joy, etc.

6 parts of the Eucharist: We come to church, we greet the Lord, we hear God's
Word, we give our gifts, we eat God's bread, and we come out of church.

This week we made Words-of-Life bookmarks. Each child picked a verse of their
choosing and wrote the entire verse on their bookmark, then decorated it. Each child
chose a different Bible verse and hopefully will find meaning in their chosen verse
each time they look at their bookmark.

Earthy Soul
Help Me, Lord, Im feeling overwhelmed. Before this spirals into
hopelessness, help me see what it
is that I know, what it is that I can
do, and help me to do it. I ask this
in the name of the Trinity who creates me, who breathes life into me,
who saves me for the building of
your kingdom.
When I have the courage to read/watch the news, or to discuss it with my friends, it
is so common for me to STOP thinking, stop talking, stop praying. The news of the
world can be so horrible, so out-of-control that it seems there is nothing we can do
to make it better. Just this week we have heard stories of failure that will not go
away stories that may be happening in one locale at the moment we hear about
them but are spreading around the world.
* Babies, toddlers, little kids shot to death in war, by accident, occasionally by
their own little hands.
* Important food crops diminished or ruined, due partly to unseasonable weather.
In our backyard, this meant that we grew almost no vegetables for the Eureka
Pantry. In other climates it meant farm failure and starving populations.
* Ongoing wars or sudden terrorist attacks leaving communities decimated. The
fortunate people whose lives are spared are forced to flee their homes in search
of a home that can take them in and feed their children. There are not enough
homes. Sometimes, there are camps instead with little food, little sanitation, little medical care.
Help Me Lord, Im Feeling Overwhelmed
Just summarizing the problems this brieflyhelp me see what it is that I know makes me want to shut down my computer or take a break to play a quick game of
Scrabble. But I know that:
* I need to help, my faith calls me. I need to do something.
* What I do on my own will not solve any of these problems. To make change I
must join with others.
* These problems may not be caused by exactly the same issues, but I know they
are related.

If you have further questions, talk to the Vicar. Pastor Sally values input and
is happy to have a conversation at any time about St. Francis.
TREASURERS COMMENTARY:
Pledge income is still lower than projected. While our monthly expenses are now
running negative for total differences between income and expenses, we are still reflecting a positive YTD balance and our ongoing balance in the checking account is
expected to keep us in the black for 2015.
OTHER MATTERS FOR THE COMMITTEE:
On June 24th, the Finance Committee reviewed our mid-year income and expenses,
and a proposed 2016 budget as part of our annual Diocesan Appeal request for financial assistance sent in mid-July. The Finance Committee agreed to maintain the current level of projected expenses for 2015. The proposed budget draft for 2016 reflects a large deficit, but this will need to be revised after pledges are received in November.

Property Update
By the time you read this, we will have closed on our property at 602 Brewster Rd. in Eureka. Thanks to the blessings of God and the Diocese of Missouri, St.
Francis has land!
Thank you to all who participated and provided ideas for our Aug 23 parishwide forum about the proposed building plans. There was a lot of interest in certain
topics childrens space, access to bathrooms, security for the building, etc. Here
are priorities, as we heard them:
* The entrance into the building should naturally lead/invite people into
the worship space. The fellowship space should be close to and easily
accessible from the worship space.
* Windows are important. Natural light is highly desired. We also
highly value a lovely view of nature out the worship space windows.
* We want a sizable kitchen.
* We dont want unisex bathrooms!
Were working on a revised layout based on everyones input.
The Executive Committee continues to vet capital campaign consultants.
Well hear from a local firm on Oct 1. At a special meeting on Oct 13, the Bishops
Committee will get advice and information from the CEO of Church Development
Services about next steps and the costs associated with building.

catch glimpses, so be aware, we are promised that God is present. I like to imagine
things of God as being bright with light, and as I remain open to the movements
of the Spirit, these glimpses of God can be seen. I wondered how many times have I
missed God moving above me in quick movements and with yet enough light to potentially catch my attention?
Looking up at the sky was as if I was looking into the eyes of heaven. I was reminded of a verse from Ps 46:10, Be still, and know that I am God. Another meteor passes by, and then I hear my inner voice say: Thank you God for being there
for me in times of darkness. Thank you God for showing me the light of your love.
Thank you God for holding me in your arms in the stillness and darkness of this
night.
In Christs service,

The tutors we have and the tutors we need also vary in who they are and what
they can offer to our students:
*
*
*
*
*
Ages 14 to 60+
Willing and able to form short-term relationships with students
Completed middle school (our teen tutors) to completed graduate programs
Subject-area experts to generalists who can help students figure it out.
Reading specialists to cookie bakers
Our tutoring program is booming! We need some people who can be there
most Wednesday evenings, 6:308:00 p.m. and we need people who will be called
occasionally, sometimes on short notice. You dont need to be a certified teacher, a
rocket scientist, or a mathematician. What you need is to be able to sit with a student and support them as they try to learn.
To see if maybe this ministry is the right place for you, talk to Jackie Selle. Or
sit in some Wednesday night to see what its like. As we often say to the students,
Give it a try!
