Determining the Area of a Polygon Field using only the Tape

Page 1

INTRODUCTION

The area of a shape is a number that tells how many square units are needed to cover the
shape. Area can be measured in different units, such as square feet, square meters, or square
inches.
You can find an area by drawing a shape on graph paper, and counting the squares inside the
shape. But this is not very practical, so we use area formulas instead. Every polygon and circle
has a formula for finding its area.
In his fieldwork, we are expected to develop in determining the area of a polygon field using the
tape only by dividing the area into triangles.

OBJECTIVES AND INSTRUMENTS

Objective: To develop the skills in determining the area of a polygonal field using the tape only by
dividing the area into triangles
Instruments:
Two range poles
Chalk/1set of marking pins
2 plumb bob
50 meter tape

Meter tape-Used to measure distance

between two points

Range pole- A conspicuously painted pole

held upright to show the position of a survey
mark.

PROCEDURES AND COMPUTATION

Procedure:
A. DETERMINATION OF THE AREA OF TRIANGLE COMPONENTS USING BASIC FORMULA

1
=
2

1. The professor designates the locations of more than 4 points like 5 (or 6) vertices of the
polygonal field to be analyzed and marks these points with hubs. Name the vertices A, B,
C, D and E.
2. The chief of the party divides the field area into convenient triangular components and
calls them 1 , 2 and 3 .
3. For the first trial use the basic formula
=1
2

to compute for the area of each triangular component. Measure any side of the first
triangular field and designate this as the base of the triangle.
4. Determine the length of the altitude to this base. The determination of the altitude is
done by locating a point on this base after dropping a line perpendicular to this from the
opposite vertex by swaying an arc to the base.
5. Record the length of the base and the altitude in the field work computation sheet
provided.
6. Repeat the same procedures 4-6 with the rest of the triangular components of the
polygonal filed to compute the entire area assigned. Sum up all the areas of each
triangular component to get the total area.
B. DETERMINATION OF THE AREA OF THE TRIANGLE COMPONENTS USING THE FORMULA

1
= sin
2

1. The same triangular field will be used for this second trial but change the naming of the
vertices of the polygonal field.
2. The chief of party again divides the field area into convenient triangular components
and calls them1 , 2 and 3 .
3. For this second trial use the formula =1 sin to compute for the triangular
2

field and designate these as sides a and b of the triangle.

4. Determine the measure of the included angle between them.
5. Record the lengths of the two sides and include the angle in the field work computation
sheet provided.
6. Repeat the same procedures 4-6 with the rest of the triangular components of the
polygonal filed to compute the entire area assigned. Sum up all the areas of each
triangular component to get the total area.

The same triangular field will be used for this second trial but change the naming of the
vertices of the polygonal field.
The chief of party again divides the field area into convenient triangular components
and calls them1 , 2 and 3 .
For this third trial use the herons formula to compute for the area of each triangular
component. Measure all the three sides of the first triangular field and designate the
sides as a, b and c of the triangle.
Record the lengths of the three sides in the field work computation sheet provided.
Repeat the same procedures 4-6 with the rest of the triangular components of the
polygonal filed to compute the entire area assigned. Sum up all the areas of each
triangular component to get the total area.

RESEARCH AND DISCUSSION

The area of a polygon can be computed with just knowing the length of its
sides. To find its area, divide the polygon into triangles which is much easier to
deal with and find the area of the triangles individually. After computing each
area of the triangle that make up the polygon, add up their area, and the sum of
the area is the sum of the polygon. And it is said that this kind of method are
already used in Egyptian era.

CONCLUSION
Using only the tape, I learned in this fieldwork on how to determine the
area of a polygon. Base on the lecture given to us it is easier to divide the polygon
into smaller regions. And once you divided the polygon, it will be easier to take
the area of those regions. And the sum of the smaller regions will be the area of
the polygon.
Possible sources of error in this fieldwork might be due to wrong formulas
used or inaccurate measurement. A lot of patience is recommended in this
fieldwork. There are lots of measurements needed and multiple methods in
computing for the area. And remember that there are specific requirements in
using each formula.
Determining an area of a certain region is applicable in many things. And
the method we used in this field work is applicable if we need to measure the
area of a certain region having only a tape measure as an instrument. This
method is very handy if you lack the instrument needed in measuring an area.
You can also use this in estimating distances.
