SUMMARY: Erin Merryn is the pen name of a Chicago-area author/activist and the namesake of Erin's Law, state

initiatives intended to educate children about sexual abuse.

Reporting for my blog, The Sidebar, from April 2 through May 23, 2015 I e-mailed Erin a half-dozen courteous
inquiries in an attempt to obtain supporting facts re:
1. Two legal cases against sexual abusers which she wrote about in her books and which she has discussed in
media interviews.
2. A dramatic April 17, 2015 confrontation at a Maryland book-signing which she described in a lengthy Facebook
post.
3. Information she provided to an Alaska TV reporter in a May 21, 2015 interview about a front page newspaper
story reporting the arrest of a school coach being arrested for molesting several 14-year-old girls and that the
school's superintendent told her his daughter had been one of the victims.
She failed to provide me with any of the requested information and threatened to take legal action against me if I
contacted her again. (See below for our entire correspondence.)
I'd welcome receiving any related information. My contact information is on the e-mails below.
Based on an October 17, 2006 Western Illinois University press release, in my first few e-mails I mistakenly
addressed her by her maiden name, Erin McNamee. I subsequently learned via her wedding website that her
married name is MacLean, so in my May 23, 2015 e-mail, I addressed her by her proper name.

Dear Ms. McNamee,
This morning, in the course of Googling the name of IL Sen. Tim Bivins (with whom I've been in contact in recent years re: a developing
nonprofit scandal*), I happened upon last week's Carmi Times article about your work and his efforts on your behalf:
http://www.carmitimes.com/article/20150324/NEWS/150329661/1994/NEWS/?Start=2
My apologies, I hadn't heard of you before, but another quick Google led me to the many interesting media reports and other
information about your background, your books, and your advocacy efforts.
I've been a public critic of family members -- please see my website and blog -- so I was especially interested in this information from
Scott Hewitt's September 7, 2011 Columbian article: http://www.columbian.com/news/2011/sep/07/sex-abuse-survivor-speaks-outagainst-keeping-secr/
(Erin) was 11 years old when her teenaged cousin, an older boy who was also a neighbor, started abusing her...Cousin Brian
denied everything at first but eventually confessed...Brian was sentenced to seven years of probation, 1,000 hours of
community service and mental health treatment; but all that eventually was watered down to nothing very meaningful, Merryn
said.
I'd like to learn more about the case and may wish to report about it on my blog. What was the court, the name of the judge, the case
number, and the approximate sentencing date, please? Do you have any of the case records? If so, can you send me copies?
Thanks for your time/consideration and I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,
Peter M. Heimlich

Dear Ms. McNamee,
I haven't received your reply to my questions of April 2 (copied below). I'm sure you're busy, but if you can give me some indication of
when you'll be able to provide me with the requested information about the court case you discussed in Scott Hewitt's September 7, 2011
Columbian article, that would be appreciated.
Last week I heard from IL Senator Tim Bivins that you'd contacted him about my inquiry, so I'm looping him in. As I explained to him,
for some years I've been interested in the subject of sexual abuse, hence my interest in reporting more facts about your history.
Also I read Katie Moritz's April 3 Juneau Empire article about your efforts to pass Erin's Law in Alaska with the support of Sens. Lesil
McGuire and Berta Gardner. I'm looping the senators in so they'll be up to speed if I want to ask them any related questions.
Thanks for your continued attention and I look forward to receiving the requested information.

Honestly Peter, I am extermely busy traveling every week speaking at events and testifying on Erin's
Law and a full time mom on top of it I can't committ the time to this right now. Just landed in
Maryland about to go speak at a high school, book signing at the Chamber of Commerce for the city,
then a child abuse conference in the morning back on a plane back to Chicago. This is my busiest
time of year being child abuse awareness month.

Ms. McNamee,
Thanks you for your e-mail. I'm not on deadline, so approximately when do you anticipate being able to provide me with the
information?

Dear Ms. McNamee,
I'm following up on our correspondence last month. Since then I've been reading your books and I find them very inspiring. Also, this
week I had a good conversation with Sen. Bivins about your efforts. He's still very much interested in your work so I thought he'd like to
be looped in.
After I finish your books, I'd like to follow up with some related questions, but I saw your Facebook post about the dramatic encounter
you had with the photographer in Maryland on April 17. I wanted to learn more about that and perhaps report a related item.
1. Did the episode take place at West Nottingham Academy in Colora?
2. At approximately what time did it take place?
3. In your post, you mentioned that staffers assisted you. I'd like to get a comment from one of them. Whom do you suggest I contact?
Thanks for your continued attention and I look forward to your reply, preferably by Wednesday, May 13. If you need more time, just ask
and I'll accommodate your schedule.
Cheers and have a good weekend.

Dear Ms. McNamee,
I'm sorry to hear that, but that's certainly your prerogative.
Are you willing to provide me with facts about the legal actions taken against your cousin and your friend Ashleys uncle that you
described in your books?
Thanks for your continued time/attention and I look forward to your reply.

Dear Ms. MacLean,
For an item I'm reporting for my blog, I'd appreciate your answers to a couple of quick questions I have re: the following information
you provided in an interview with reporter Caroline Flynn in this May 21 Your Alaska Link report:
http://www.youralaskalink.com/news/Erin-Merryn-on-the-Current-State-of-Erins-Law-in-Alaska-304673511.html
(Time stamp 1:45) Flynn: (Erin) remembers early on a (school) superintendent who said he would never have the Erin's Law curriculum
taught in his school.
MacLean (Merryn): Three weeks later, front page of the paper, the name of his school, a coach being arrested for molesting several 14year-old girls. I contacted him immediately and I said, "Oh, really not a problem in your school?" His response back: "My daughter's one
of the victims."
1) What's the name of the school district and the superintendent, please?
2) Approximately when did the arrest occur? Do you recall the newspaper that published the front page article?
Thanks for your continued time/consideration and I look forward to your reply. Please feel free to cc: Ms. Flynn.
Sincerely,
Peter M. Heimlich
