Library staff develops strategic plan

On December 4, 2009, library staff gathered in the Texas Star Café private dining room to begin the process of
developing a strategic plan for 2010-2013. Forty staff members were assigned to small groups to work on the
strategic mission, vision, and goals that will guide the library’s development over the next four years.
Librarians and members of the staff who attended the strategic planning session represented UT Health
Science Center libraries in San Antonio, Harlingen and Laredo.
Following the initial strategic planning session a smaller planning team refined the mission, vision, and goals.
A draft was presented to the Library Advisory Committee on February 4. The Library Advisory Committee
reviewed the plan and made some helpful recommendations. Revised versions of the Mission, Vision and
Goals statements can be found on the next page.
The next step in the strategic planning process will occur on March 12, when library staff will once again meet
as a group to begin developing objectives that will move the library toward its goals.

Teaching evidence-based search skills

to second year medical students

In January 2010, thanks to Dr. Nan Clare, Associate Dean for

Academic Affairs, librarians were given an opportunity to teach
literature searching skills in the context of Evidence-Based
Medicine (EBM) to the second year medical students.
To put this in context, third year medical students currently learn how to search Ovid MEDLINE during their
Pediatric Clerkship rotation. Feedback from the students indicated they wanted to learn these skills earlier in the
curriculum. The goal was to better prepare them for their third year clinical experiences, bearing in mind how
important it is to support clinical decision-making with the best evidence from the literature.

To take full advantage of the time, librarians divided the four hours of lecture time equally between large and small
group presentations. The small group sessions built on the material previously presented to the larger group. The
two sessions: “Search and Find: Skills for the Third Year,” both in the Clinical Neurosciences Module, were not
compulsory, but students earned extra credit for attending either one or both sessions.

Four librarians took a segment to teach, and each managed a small group, guiding students through practice
PubMed exercises and then through questions based on clinical scenarios. For example: forming a PICO,
identifying types of question, type of study, search strategy and so on. Librarians made sure the exercises were
relevant to the material they had already learned in Clinical Neurosciences.

With an already packed MS2 schedule, 25 students were expected, however, librarians were surprised when 150
students appeared in both sessions! In fact, there were 162 on day 1 and 151 on day 2 (out of a class of 250). Despite
the larger than anticipated attendance, everything went very smoothly. It was truly a team effort by the Education
and Information Services librarians.

Afterwards, the feedback was clear — over 60% of the students wanted the sessions to be mandatory for the next
academic year. Students were also asked to self-evaluate their skills, before and after both teaching sessions. The
percentage increase in skill level was very encouraging. For example, 24 students initially said they knew the
difference between therapy questions and other question types. This increased to 118. Initially only 41 students felt
confident using PubMed Clinical Queries. This increased to 117. One student commented: “Very helpful. This
session will save me lots of time in the future. Thanks!”

Based on this instructional experience, librarians are now working with the School of Medicine Academic Affairs
office to incorporate the material into the second year class of Fall 2010.

Executive Director of Libraries participates in

two leadership development programs
Rajia Tobia, Executive Director of Libraries, is participating in two programs designed to develop leadership
among academic executives.
The Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) sponsors the New Directors Symposium to
enhance leadership skills among newly appointed library directors in academic health science centers. The
program began with a day-long leadership workshop at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
meeting in Boston in November and will conclude with a workshop held at the Annual Meeting of the Medical
Library Association in Washington, D.C. in May. A number of leadership webinars will also be conducted
throughout the seven month program.
Rajia has also been selected to participate in the UT Health Science Center’s Leadership Education and
Development (LEAD) Institute to develop leadership skills among campus faculty and staff. The LEAD
Institute, which begins on March 26, sponsors monthly sessions designed to expand leadership knowledge
and skills specifically designed for UT Health Science Center faculty and staff. The LEAD program is designed
and led by the UT Leadership Institute. Twenty-six fellows in the program will have the opportunity to
interact and work with colleagues from campus schools and administrative areas.

We are sorry to announce the retirement of Dolores Diaz, Library Assistant II in Laredo. Dolores has worked
part-time in the Laredo Campus Extension Library since 2007, when she retired from her first career as a
school librarian.
Dolores is loved by students and staff members for her sunny disposition, for her total commitment to “going
the extra mile,” and for providing outstanding service to all library users. In addition to her campus
responsibilities, Dolores has worked tirelessly as an advocate for the library’s outreach programs in Laredo.
Dolores always has been an asset to the Laredo Campus Extension Library. She leaves with our best wishes,
but we will definitely miss her!

Ophthalmodouleia by Georg Bartisch

A featured resource of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library
Dresden – 1583 - 1st edition
The first textbook on ophthalmology in the
German language

Georg Bartisch, the founder of modern ophthalmology, was court oculist in Dresden. The
illustrations in Ophthalmodouleia depicting Renaissance eye surgery in all its aspects were
made by Bartisch himself. Among the remarkable woodcuts are pictures of a patient tied to a
chair in readiness for his operation, procedures involved in cataract surgery, blepharochalasis,
and exenteration of the orbit, and the removal of eyelashes to cure trichiasis. Bartisch also
gives directions for pre-operative measures for the patient (fasting) and surgeon (abstention
from drink and venery).

For all his skill, Bartisch still came under the influence of the prevailing superstitions of the
day, astrology, witchcraft and magic.
