To take full advantage of the time, librarians divided the four hours of lecture time equally between large and small
group presentations. The small group sessions built on the material previously presented to the larger group. The
two sessions: “Search and Find: Skills for the Third Year,” both in the Clinical Neurosciences Module, were not
compulsory, but students earned extra credit for attending either one or both sessions.
Four librarians took a segment to teach, and each managed a small group, guiding students through practice
PubMed exercises and then through questions based on clinical scenarios. For example: forming a PICO,
identifying types of question, type of study, search strategy and so on. Librarians made sure the exercises were
relevant to the material they had already learned in Clinical Neurosciences.
With an already packed MS2 schedule, 25 students were expected, however, librarians were surprised when 150
students appeared in both sessions! In fact, there were 162 on day 1 and 151 on day 2 (out of a class of 250). Despite
the larger than anticipated attendance, everything went very smoothly. It was truly a team effort by the Education
and Information Services librarians.
Afterwards, the feedback was clear — over 60% of the students wanted the sessions to be mandatory for the next
academic year. Students were also asked to self-evaluate their skills, before and after both teaching sessions. The
percentage increase in skill level was very encouraging. For example, 24 students initially said they knew the
difference between therapy questions and other question types. This increased to 118. Initially only 41 students felt
confident using PubMed Clinical Queries. This increased to 117. One student commented: “Very helpful. This
session will save me lots of time in the future. Thanks!”
Based on this instructional experience, librarians are now working with the School of Medicine Academic Affairs
office to incorporate the material into the second year class of Fall 2010.

The Laredo library announces the retirement of Dolores Diaz, Library Assistant III
We are sorry to announce the retirement of Dolores Diaz, Library Assistant II in Laredo. Dolores has worked
part-time in the Laredo Campus Extension Library since 2007, when she retired from her first career as a
school librarian.
Dolores is loved by students and staff members for her sunny disposition, for her total commitment to “going
the extra mile,” and for providing outstanding service to all library users. In addition to her campus
responsibilities, Dolores has worked tirelessly as an advocate for the library’s outreach programs in Laredo.
Dolores always has been an asset to the Laredo Campus Extension Library. She leaves with our best wishes,
but we will definitely miss her!

getHIP 2010 is a Texas Library Association preconference for school librarians, public librarians, school
nurses, teachers, school administrators, health educators, health sciences librarians and others, to promote a
coordinated approach to school health. This preconference is an opportunity for attendees to raise their
awareness of health information resources available from the National Library of Medicine and other agencies
and organizations. It will also provide a chance for participants to work together to generate specific ideas for
collaborating across professional lines to promote access to health information for students, their families and
the broader community.
It is not necessary to register for the TLA conference to attend this workshop. Information on how to register
for the workshop can be found at http://www.library.uthscsa.edu/events/gethip2010reg.cfm.

Georg Bartisch, the founder of modern ophthalmology, was court oculist in Dresden. The
illustrations in Ophthalmodouleia depicting Renaissance eye surgery in all its aspects were
made by Bartisch himself. Among the remarkable woodcuts are pictures of a patient tied to a
chair in readiness for his operation, procedures involved in cataract surgery, blepharochalasis,
and exenteration of the orbit, and the removal of eyelashes to cure trichiasis. Bartisch also
gives directions for pre-operative measures for the patient (fasting) and surgeon (abstention
from drink and venery).
For all his skill, Bartisch still came under the influence of the prevailing superstitions of the
day, astrology, witchcraft and magic.
