Music Based Programming Assignment 1

Radio is important for allowing evolving and settled countries for providing
them with the information needed. It is also easier to be able to connect
with the audience than television and the newspaper is. This is helpful
because the people who could not afford to buy the TV set are still able to
listen to the updated news and also listening to the music. It is also free to
listen to the radio were as you would have to pay for the newspapers and
television. Using the radio is easier to broadcast information to more
viewers and provides them with instant information rather than waiting for
the next day updates. This help the local areas because if there is a local
illness or a worldwide disease which could go into any population you then
can get the updates on the disease and know the signs of the illness to be
able to see when someone has it or not.
The radio also provides entertainment for developed countries as well as
providing the local news and information. Although there is many ways to
digitally download and buy the latest music and genres the radio provides
this for free while on broadcasting. This does not only give the audience
new music to listen to it also provides more genres for the audience to
listen to. The radio also allows the audience to keep up to date with the
latest trends which is surrounding the popular culture. This then helps the
audience to keep up with society around them, it makes it easier for
someone to get what everyone is doing and also at the best price it is
advertised as.
Before radio was created, twenty years after phones were created
Guglielmo Marconi sent radio signals and played music down a telephone.
Marconi was born in Italy and studied at university of Bologna. He used
the wireless telegraphs to create the radio signals which were
broadcasted. The founder of wireless telegraphs was Heinrich Hertz.
Marconi finally transmitted his first radio signal which went up to 1,6km
(nearly a mile) this was transmitted in 1896. Marconi knew that working
with the radio signals had huge potential and offered the invention to the
Italian government who turned it down. He continued to experiment
further into his success and completed his first broadcast and the English
government accepted his invention and is still being used in our day and
age to allow us to have the radio signals and music to be produced.
A number of manufacturers to support a new medium formed together a
radio group which is known as the BBC (British Broadcasting Company)
which was created in 1922. The government were worried that
broadcasting was too important to be left with the marketing area and
made an enquiry of how it should be presented. John Reith (the manager
of BBC) went against the government stating that the broadcasting should
be used as a public service as it has throughout the past for audience to
hear freely.
RAJAR

Radio Joint Audience Research Limited is a company who analysis different radio
stations. They looks at who the audience is and how they represent the radio
they are listening. This is then used by the other radio companies to make there
station more popular, this will then achieve more audience listening to their own
station. Also RAJAR evaluates the people around the area of the broadcasts and
what the genres are main in the area of broadcasting. This then gives the radio
company information so they know what to talk about and what genre songs to
play on the radio.

Ofcom
Office of Communications are a company who control the TV and radio segments
and what devices they can be projected to. They also look at the ways of the
waves can travel to the different devices and how it can be improved each day to
make the listeners satisfied by the radio channels. This then helps the radio
companies by knowing the strongest and the quickest ways of connecting to
their audience, and also they know whether there audience listens to the radio
through different devices at different times. This then makes the company
reliable and get more views on the radio broadcasting. Ofcom also makes the
rules of the radio companies, you must obey these rules while you are on air as it
may cost a heavy fine and even get the people fired from the job. They also are
contacted if the people believed there was a complaint held for a radio company
depending on what they have done and what they should have done.
These are the top ten Ofcom complaints about radio mistakes,
1. Russell Brand / Jonathan Ross BBC Radio 2
On the 18th of October Ofcom fined the BBC 150,000 because Russell Brand and
Jonathon Ross called up many good talented people which who answered the call
lost their jobs. As soon as the complaint was made Ofcom had no troubles into
fining the BBC straight away. (There was 1939 complaints based of this incident)
2. Busta Rhymes Arab Money Galaxy Birmingham
On the 29th November 2008 229 people complained that within the song Arab
money was very offensive lyrics, the complaint was not upheld in the end of the
complaints to Ofcom.
3. Jeni Barnett LBC 97.3

having the rights for children to have the vaccinations for measles, mumps and
rubella (MMR.) Ofcom received up to 190 complaints about the opinions being
expressed on the show, the complaint did not get up held. (7 th January 2009.)
4. Danny Kelly talkSPORT

2011 although this was very bad for a radio channel it was not upheld to be
fined.
5. Adrian Durham talkSPORT

There was 95 complaints to Adrian Durham for being Xenophobic to people from
other countries because Englands failure for hosting the 2018 world cup, most of
the Xenophobic was mainly towards the winners of hosts Russia and Qatar.
Specialist
A specialist radio/show is where they only put on specific genre of music/show
and does not mix up the different genres to create a radio station or show for a
certain age or for certain people.
Commercial
Commercial radio is where the producers put in commercial advertisements, this
is how many radios get their money for being paid to advertise other companies
around there local areas and worldwide companies. There is a commercial genre
of music which is totally different to commercial radio.
Below I am going to be explaining different types of radio and explaining whether
they are commercial or specialised.
Contemporary hit Radio
CHR is known for its many up to date music hits. It is more common in the US,
UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It does many of the top 40s or pop radio
which plays new and popular songs for the younger audience. Capital London is a
strong example for CHR because there main genre is top 40, pop. Capital
London is a commercial radio station because you can pay the radio to advertise
your company or business, this helps the people because then the public know
who they can trust and where to get hold of different companies to help the, out.
Adult contemporary
AC is where they put music which have a range from 1960s soft music the music
of the present day. They mostly use, easy listening, rhythm and blue and rock
throughout the genres of their broadcasting times. On AC it is usually dated for
music which come from 1960s and 1970s and also adding a few new songs in
know and then so then it can present what music is known to what it was.
Channel 27 is a radio in which you can view online but not through your TV,
although it is adult contemporary it is mixed with pop, seasonal and holiday so
there is also new songs mixed in which then makes the radio easier for everyone
to listen to. This channel is commercial because there are adverts within the
radio station and you can also pay to have the adverts changed, although the
adverts wont be there you are still paying the radio station, so it stays
commercial.
Gold
Also known as oldies, gold is a channel in which they play the top hits from 15
years ago. This is a radio for the older generation and maybe some of the
younger generations. Not only can the audience listen to the music it can make
them feel more comfortable. Using the word as gold makes the genre seem more
fragile to viewers and this then gets treated with respect so that it is more
comfortable for the listeners. Gold is the main radio station for this king of radio
genre. They play many of the old hits and can be found on TV and radio stations.
Is a commercial radio as there is advertisements which they are paid for, they
also produce a dating site on gold which you could also pay for and get regular
updates.
Recurrent radio stations

Are the ones which collect information and data on what songs are continuously
played on the radio? Many of the songs are released and then took of the playlist
after a certain amount of time period. The ones in which stay on the show are
then selected within the recurrent radio stations. This then gets put into the
many different types of the top 100 or the top 40... 100 hits is an online radio
station in which you can browse the top 100 of many different genres of your
liking. You can only listen to their music online they are not a full radio station in
which you can tune into. They are a commercial station because they do not
have short stories in the broadcasting only based music. This is a specialised
type of radio station because it only goes for the top instead of have many
different genres and classics.
Easy listening
Has music dating to 1950s to the 1970s where they only choose songs which
have more of a smooth tune in which makes it easier to listen to. They use
mainly non rock music vocals and middle of the road music (MOR). This is for the
audience who does not like to listen to music which is fast, it is for people who
prefer the slower songs. Smooth radio is an easy radio of choice for this genre,
they play slower and simpler songs. This station is played on the radios stations
and TV as well as online catch-up they are more of a service radio as more
information will be said throughout the broadcasting time and stories will be read
for the viewers to listen to.
Classical radio
Is what it says on the label, they play much of the classical music which is also
known as an easy listening channel as there is many easy sounds and vocals to
be heard just they will be from a rather new period of time rather than the past.
Classic FM is one of the main classical radio stations. They mostly spend their
time updating the audience with the new classical music releases. The radio is
more commercial as there are many advertisements on the station.

Best of teen awards 2013 radio 1

Hosted by Dan and Phil they both are youtubers which update on weekly bases
talking about things they do over the week period and what else they are going
to do within the filming process.
Sunday 29th December 19:00 say why it was on
They introduce themselves and what they do (you tubers) this is a brilliant
starter for the teen awards because YouTube is what a lot of teens would do.
Using you tubers can get the fans of the channel to again listen to the radio
broadcast because they are expecting the good that they bring to their channel
to the radio. It makes it easier for the kids to listen to as well.
The jingles that introduce the radio 1 teen awards are upbeat and also uses
world famous songs. This is very helpful as they have more chance of getting the
younger viewers to listen to the radio quicker.
Many screaming girls and boys as a cheering and celebrating jingles. This then
relates to the younger generation and the idea of everything being live.
As they introduce an artist who are performing in the teen awards for a short
time only one of the songs are played in the background.

1. Rita Ora Right Know cuts herself of to talk to her audience who are there.
A rapper raps into a part of her song.
Dan and Phil then cut into the scene again. They both begin to explain their
experiences with being at the performance and what they got up to.
This is easier way to show the audience who actually was there performing and
gives them sneek peaks at was is to come up, this then gets more viewers to the
broadcast.
6 minuets
2. Jessie J live at teen awards, price tag.
Swear words within the songs are taken out by the artists themselves this is
better as not everyone is over the age of 18 so swear words are not allowed.
Having the live songs played on the radio makes it feel like you are there.
3. Jessie J (still live) Thunder
4. Jessie j (still live) excuse my rude
5. Jessie J (still live) wild ft. dizzy rascal]
Having the songs back to back give the fans more of the opportunity to listen to
her life rather than having to pay out a lot of money to see her life if you can
listen to her for free. This is a very affected and different way of producing the
music not only do fans listen to the performance people who like radio to be
changed would enjoy this radio station because of how differently it is produced.
The live performance goes on for 15 minutes this is a different way of presenting
the performances, instead of having different songs at different times having the
artist play together gets the fans on the radio longer so this then gets more
audience for the broadcasting to know if they want to do it again.
Dan and Phil both talk about the updates on twitter based on the live
performances of Jessie J. this then cooperates the audience into the radio station
because they have been recognised and is read out loud.
Dan and Phil acts and talks as if they are doing there YouTube channel which
then gives it a more inviting tone to the radio broadcast. This the helps people
recognise them as the YouTube producers instead of having to be a secret self on
the radio
Who won the teen awards Doctor Who, Andy Murray, Olly Murs, Mosey
Williams, Union J, One Direction and Soella.
Announcing the winners was a good part towards the beginning of the show can
let the people who want to get to the point of it allow themselves to feel
connected to the hosts and then this makes them feel more comfortable and
maybe want to listen on for the whole broadcast.
After announcing each winner a cheer is played in the background. This then
shows the fans and audience that they are to be congratulated instead of being
bad.
Dan and Phil are then live at the teen awards. This the shows that the
performances are legit and that they was not pretending to be at the
performances.

They then interview Taylor Swift and do a challenge.

They both have to draw each other blind folded without looking at the people
they are drawing.
French music is played while they are painting each other then they have an
alarm sound when the time is up.
Taylor wins.
This was a specialist show because this is based on just one genre and also just
the teen awards, there was no other parts added in like the news updates and
advertisements.

Annie Nightingale radio 1 xtra

20/05/2015
Club cheval and sub focus
Starts the radio of by explaining strong content and adult themes and tells you if
you are easily offended go to another radio on the player, this is very useful
because the younger viewers may not want to listen to the adult content.
Jingle used to tell the audience what it is.
The host says hello before the songs starts
1. Wiley from the outside.
She is saying that she is celebrating parts of the music
Most of the songs are remixed by special artists. This the gives a different aspect
to what any song can sound like, also you do not know what to expect o the next
song based on the remixes.

2.

FourFiveSeconds (DJ Mustard Remix) (feat. Rihanna

3. Idris Elba & Fatboy Slim uptown funk

The lady who is presenting the radio is not the youngest, this states that there is
no age limit in the way of music that anyone at any age may want to listen to
many genres. This then may allow different ways of looking at the music genre
and to see who is available to listen to it and what they prefer.
Jingle played to show who the host is. Using her name constantly shows that you
will not forget who she is and what she is doing so you know when to find her on
the station and if you wish to favourite her to listen to the channels she does.
Uses a jingle to show what the club mix is going to sound like if you stay listening
to the music channel. This then gets more people to want to listen longer if they
like the sound of the music in which is coming up later on in the show.
4. Apex rise take you out
5. KDA rumble
Talking over the songs so you do not get bored while listening to the beats and
songs.

Copying some of the songs lyrics to make it sound like youre having a good
time
Instead of saying the word song she uses the word tune, this is one of the best
ways of connecting to the audience because you are talking the way that the
audience would talk so they can understand you like you understand them.
6. A$AP rocky and rod Stewart everyday.
The swear words are cut out so if you are a younger listener then you do not
hear all the swearing within the songs, this then helps them not get as many
complaint from parents so its easily allowed to listen to the songs.
7. Seven Davis Jr Sunday morning
8. Major lazer and DJ snake lean on
9. Krep and konan freak of the week
Altogether the show was a new type of genre in which I began to like after a
while of listening to the tracks were being played on the radio station. Having the
older woman host the show gave a different definition to what they like rather
than having to listen to gold/oldies all the time.
