COURSE DESCRIPTION
Operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals. Also includes percent proportions, measurement,
basic geometry, applications, problem-solving strategies, and writing about mathematics.

Textbook: Martin-Gay “Basic College Mathematics” 3rd edition with MathXL

Financial Aid: Students receiving financial aid should ALWAYS check with
Financial aid prior to withdrawing, signing an incomplete contract, changing to an
audit, or receiving an F or V grade in a class.”
Missed Exams and/or Assignments: Assignments are due at 11:59P on the day specified.
Late assignments will be penalized 10% per day, until the solution is discussed in class. Once an
assignment solution is discussed in class, the assignment will no longer be accepted for any credit.
Make-up (late) exams or quizzes are only available with documented cause, such as illness or disaster.

MATH CLASS:
Students must demonstrate they can do operations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals without
a calculator. Calculators are appropriate (and encouraged) for work with proportions, conversions,
measurements and geometry. The math department recommends the TI 30X, available in the bookstore.
SPSCC offers free Math tutorial services for its students in building 22 room 222. Its hours of operation
change quarterly but they are roughly Monday through Friday 8 AM to 2PM, Tuesday and Wednesday 8
AM to 8 PM and Saturdays 10 AM to 1 PM. Please contact Jay Thomas the Math center coordinator at

MathXL will be used for this course. You will need to have a MathXL access code. If you purchase a
new textbook from the bookstore, it will include a code. You may also have a code from a previous
term, or purchase a stand-alone code from www.mathxl.com Specific instructions for registering for
this course will be provided.
MATH PROGRESSION:
Your final grade in this course determines if you receive credit for MATH 80 or MATH 90. In addition,
an optional waiver test will be administered that, for students receiving MATH 90 credit, can waive
MATH 94.
