HansCloos,thusbecomingthefirstnativeofTurkeywithadoctoratedegreeingeologyintheRepublic
ofTurkey.KetinreturnedtoTurkeyin1938,andstartedhiscareerasassistantprofessoratthe
GeologicalInstituteofIstanbulUniversity.

Scientificcareer
Throughafaithfulcoincidence,thelongdormantNorthAnatolianfaultawoketoactivity,firstgently
withtheTercanquakeof21November1939,butthenviolentlywiththegreatErzincancatastropheof
28and29December1939,whichclaimedthelivesofsome45,000people.Ketinrushedtothefield
withmanyothergeologists,Turkishandforeign,tomapthesurfacebreaksandthefearfuldamage.
AfterKetinpublishedhispaperontheNorthAnatolianfault,itsimportancewasacknowledgedwhenhe
wasawardedthecovetedGustavSteinmannMedaille,thehighestdistinctiontheGeologische
Vereinigunge.V.gives,inthejournal,inwhichKetinspaperhadbeenpublished.[1][2]
In1953,Ketinacceptedanewposition,thechairinGeneralGeologyintheFacultyofMinesatIstanbul
TechnicalUniversity.In1953,hepublishedhiswellknowncomparisonoftheSanAndreasandNorth
Anatolianfaults.KetincontributedfourmajorpaperstotheInternationalTectonicMapofEurope,
publishedin1960,inwhichheportraysTurkeyasadominantlyasymmetricorogen,accretedfromnorth
tosouth.Histectonicandkinematicviewsformedthebasisformanylargescaletectonicmodelsin
Turkey.
Ketinretiredfromactiveteachingin1983,butremainedintheDepartmentofGeologyasprofessor
emeritusuntilhisdeathin1995.[1]
