[AN]EDITORIAL
eleccin poltica como principal elemento de gestin y permitan que la proliferacin, an excesiva de contenedores culturales (llmese como sea) sirvan para aquello para lo que realmente fueron pensados;
May 18, the International Day of Museums. Art Notes joins this celebration, as it did with other ones,
and dedicates a supplement in this issue: a study and/or reflection on the value, criterion and emergence of art centres all from different works and authors throughout the global geography. However, our
mind and our ideas spread all around Spain view of the, sometimes, boundless blooming and the proliferation of new art centres since the eighties.
How many other centres are we going to see before our eyes with or without justification? I am afraid
that some more ones. How long the reason, the logic and the necessity for? How long wouldn't they
change from being a inevitably political weapon to be lacking action, purpose and budget, as seen before?
We think art is part of people's culture and, therefore it is a superior mental need, but we should understand that when nobody acts strictly and coherently, we can find out neglected unexpected and complex
results; it is a real pity that what emerges as a weapon then simply remains as a pure fantasy and cultural misplace with the time.
As we have stated in many other occasions, as a result of the evident cultural proposals that we are not
going to mention to avoid reiteration (or to avoid being branded as "personal dislike"), we are not against
the emergence of cultural centres - either production, collaboration, study, display or simply exhibition
ones - because this implies an added value in the culture of our people, but we are critical in view of the
inappropriate remarks and the containers that remain as containers, without proposals, subsistence economy or without a content criterion. The easiest thing is to construct the building, restoring the same or
encouraging certain architectural trend, but the most difficult thing would be to assume, to argue and to
be coherent with the content and the intention.
So we ask the political representatives to take into account the cultural agents, to forget the political
elections as their main element of management and to allow that the proliferation of the cultural containers (or whatever you want to call them) to be used for the functions they have been created for; there
are many and good examples. Let's pay attention to this and let's follow the path; deep down it is very
easy. We are aware that culture is one of the best tools because it is full of able and generous people,
who serve culture without getting, many times, the compensation they should: they know it but they
don't mind it; they simply are there.

Daido Moriyama (Osaka, 1938) was trained as a photographer in Tokyo, together with Takeji Iwamiya and Eikoh
Hosoe, who he worked with as an assistant. His first
works reflect this Japanese environment of the post-war,
between the economical and the values crisis, whose
result was a society radically different from the previous
one, where the cult of tradition marked life. Maybe this is
reflected in his work in a nostalgic look at the city and a
desire to look out, maybe looking for something purer. It
is a look full of "special characteristics that make it independent, supreme within its own field of expression and
with new possibilities either dreamed or exploited by
other antique arts". As we can see in the exhibition at the
CAAC and it is announced in the press release, the protagonists of his photographs are usually anonymous people:
passers-by without a name who are waiting, moving or
going away. Owing to his way of looking and reproducing
the captured things, we can see and understand that
loneliness is tenderness and that collective portraits can
be sad and gentle at the same time.
The author himself says: "photography is the action of
fixing time and not of expressing the world. The camera is
an unsuitable tool to extract the vision of the world or of the
beauty. If a photographer tries to join the world happily
using the traditional perspective with the camera, then he
will fall down the hole of the "idea" he has dug on his own.
Photography is a medium that only exists fixing for a
moment the "discovery" and the "cognition" of the unstoppable outside world". The exhibition is completed with a
great season of Japanese cinema, from April 11 to June 6.

The vasque artist Manu Muniategiandikoetxea is exhibiting his three-dimensional painting with quadrangular
shapes at the gallery Marisa Marimon in Ourense. The
style of this famous creator finds inspiration in the shapes of the constructivist architecture and in the chromatic execution of the new Germanic realism. His mutant
paintings could be seen in the homonym exhibition of
the MARCO in Vigo and in the sixteen Spanish Art
Projects at ARCO 2006 among other places. His solid
career allows him to modify plans and spaces, colours
and volumes creating authentic specific unrepeatable
interventions in each one of his numerous exhibitions.
Besides, his control of the tangential and diagonal shapes places him into the suburbs of the quadrangular
within a concrete or realist neo-geometry.
His expanded painting is an example of creation on bases
of screens or squares. There are two great contemporary
aesthetic lines to which the worldwide architects are assigned and these architects also find echo in the work of
many important painters. The first one includes the architecture and painting made with circular shapes, and the
second one would contain the architecture and painting
made with square shapes. A good example of the circular
or bulbs architecture is the work of Frank O. Gehry, the
creator of the Museum Guggenheim in Bilbao. An example
of the architecture of parallelepiped and squares is the
Centre George Pompidou by Renzo Piano and Richard
Rogers in Paris. The most important thing within each one
of these lines of creation is not the technologic capacity of
every historic moment, but the fact that the architects and
the painters decide to get attached to one or other line of
work basing on formal criteria. This way the plastic solutions they create are due to formal or theoretical conceptions of how to construct buildings or how to create contemporary paintings. Manu Muniategiandikoetxea has got
such a style that makes his painting inspired in the creators of the 20th century, who flirted with the quadrangular
towards a pictorial concept of three-dimensional bifrontality, develop in an almost an anthropomorphic way.

Senescencia. Ignacio Pardo gathers the production of this video artist who has worked using this
medium since 1980. The exhibition is completed
with a new piece specifically produced for the
CGAC (Centro Galego de Arte Contempornea).
The exhibition tries to bring the trajectory of this
pioneer of the video art in Galicia closer to the
public.
The eroticism and the application of the new technologies characterize some of his pieces, such as
Ninfografa (1992), and in his last pieces he also
uses 3D animations, such as in Moscas (2007) and
Paseantes (2003). These two pieces are present in
this exhibition curated by Cristina Prego, together
with some other pieces such as Vientre (2007),
Agua (2007), Latido (2007), Fuego (2007) and
Bosque (2007).
Ignacio Pardo was also present with the video
Parpadeo in La imagen sublime (1987), a collective exhibition at the MNCARS, curated by Manuel
Palacio. He also took part in Seales de video (an
exhibition curated by Eugeni Bonet in the same
museum in 1995), and in Novos camios.
Artes, Vigo, 1998). In 1986 he won the Certamen
Nacional de Vdeo in Vitoria, and he was present
in different art fairs such as ARCO (1988 and
1989) and other international appointments such
as the Documenta (Kassel) or the Biennial of So
Paulo.

lambs grazing in a field full of opened books, glowworms in a forest at dusk or an infantile balloon that
seems to be hanging from a child's hand in a rustic path.
The time flow is present in these creations and there is
a fantastic time in which fiction influences our perception of the truth.
Through the parties and images of her old childhood
friends' quotidian life, the photographer Yvonne Venegas
(Long Beach, CA, 1970) shows us in the series Las
novias ms bonitas de Baja California, a depiction of the
middle class living in the border city of Tijuana. The
documental photography is used, in this particular case,
to criticize the social roles women are taught as ideals or
dreams since they were children, as well as the world of
social appearances supporting these aspirations. A very
different viewpoint from that of Ingrid Hernndez
(Tijuana, 1974) in her seires Indoors/Outdoors, in which
the houses situated in some poor areas of Tijuana constructed with old mattresses, rims, cardboard,
among other waste materials - are used as a study field.
With this work she does not try to talk to the people who
have been forced to emigrate looking for better life conditions owing to poverty, or to make poverty be aesthetic, but to stress the intimate, the internal spaces shown
by means of the things surrounding us and the ones we
accumulate.
We can find this same intention to connect the objects
with the personal in the series Mattresses by Tania
Candiani (Mexico DF, 1974), in which she manipulated
several mattresses with words and details referring to
the seduction game, the feminine condition and appearances, among them some embroidered miniature bride's bouquets saying Don't Stop or Yes, as well as some
pins constructing the words In and Out. These mattresses, like all the pieces mentioned here, tackle a
nuclear area of human existences by means of different
aesthetic resources: desire and its different expressions.

On the other hand the

the architecture of Le

where the rigid architecture of Le Corbusier
evolves to an almost
emotive architecture,

brutalism

term coming from the
French bton brut that
means visible concrete), going away from
international hegemonic style. According to
the Smithsons, the
brutalism tries to confront a mass produced
society. They reject the
neatness and the coldness of the so-called
international style, and
their aim is to show a
powerful
industrial
design for houses and
schools so needed in
the post-war United
Kingdom. In 1950 they
build the Secondary

reference to the formula of Mies van der

Art History, as fictitious writing that arranges and classifies the object art, is being chased by some re-readings
that try to notice other possible cartographies, where
the authority of the historicist perspective and its old
taxonomies have asserted their axiological hegemony to
the detriment of other equally legitimate school models.
In the frame of this revisionist politic giving preference
to the transversal intervention and the critic of the aesthetic stories, the collective exhibition Lo(s) Cintico(s),
installed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina
Sofa with an average of eighty pieces by forty-five
Spanish and foreign artists such as: Naum Gobo, Lszl
Mol-Nagy, Giacomo Balla, Alexander Calder, Man Ray,
Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dal, Nicols Shffer, Keiji
Kawashima, Tsai Weng-Ying, Paul Burry, Sand Dari,
tries to rewrite the landscapes of the kinetic art from a
dangerously inclusive vocation (which, of course, does
not leave the exclusion) and a great deal of subjectivity
which turn it into a polemic exhibition to say the least.
The title is a tacit support that warns about the willing
to leave the old chronologic platform of historicist support to give priority to a trans-historic approach from
which an understanding of the kinetic is suggested
beyond its subscription to a concrete moment of art history and the notion of group or movement. However, the
exceeded subjectivism of the curator when undertaking
this new exegesis around the phenomenon of the kinetism has stimulated the paradoxical spirit of this exhibition, as well as the generation of successive misunderstandings in the exhibition museographic route. The supposed transversal attention at the beginning and the
extension (maybe disproportionate) of the kinetic
applied to pieces that should not be coded by these
signs, tarnish an intellectual exercise of critical review
that should have had most theoretical thickness in the
design and articulation of their operational thesis and a
less passionate and distracted distance in favour of a
more sober curatorial essay able to devise a more coherent and opportune tough cartography. The anarchy of
the principles an a certain inappropriate remark in the
conscientious implementation of the initial objectives
encouraging this project, turn into the sad signs of an
ambitious exhibition that, on the other hand, reveals
some virtues, above all with regard to the loans of pieces coming from important European and American
museums such as the MOMA in New York, the Centre
Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Whiteny Mueum of Art in

CARLOS MACI
Galera Casaborne. Antequera. Mlaga. Hasta el 3 de mayo
The Galician artist Carlos Maci is exhibiting his expanded painting with round shapes (bulbs) at the gallery
Casaborne in Mlaga. This creator's style finds inspiration in the fervent colours of urban graffiti and the violent shapes of North American abstract expressionism.
His big size expanded murals and paintings could be
visited at the exhibition Urbanitas of the MARCO in Vigo
and the stand ABC in ARCO among other places. After
staying in the USA for some time, his new production
has got musical influences and his strokes are half-way
between calligraphy and the design of a choreographer.
Besides, his interest in the colour stains allows him to be
set into the final stages of the circular, getting inside the
purely chromatic, painting what we could call transurban punk.
His universe is made up of round and chaotic shapes,
with huge holograph strokes in ringlets like in a plate of
spaghetti he is eating, or a neo-punk floral design he
pays attention to. His pictures have some shapes taken
from the weightless route of the musical notes when floating in the air, as if he was inventing a new musical
nomenclature. This artist's paintings look like his dreadlocks, they are similar to the way he speaks full of juxtaposed sentences, silences and anacoluthons. His solid
but disperse graphics are similar to his way of driving.
His fluorescent colours come from the perception of his
pop environment and his great monochrome pieces
remind us of the extended fragments of an anatomical
study of Miguel ngel.
When the physical appearance of the creator is an attached part in his pictorial world, everything is univocal.
Finally we do not know if Picasso wore a striped T-shirt
or if he painted striped characters; finally we do not
know if Maci paints kiss-curls like his hair in ringlets or
if his hair comes from a vision of a painting by Cy
Twombly he later reproduced on his head. He has been
interested in painting walls in old buildings that have to
be erased later or painting the walls of factories that will
later be demolished. This gesture of the action acts as a
musical metaphor in Maci's work, since his painting is
as shooting as the notes of the oboe in a Mozart's concert. Following the sometimes ephemeral installations
and pictorial proposals of this artist, we can find out universe du chaos Maci.

One of the main functions of a museum or an art centre is the acquisition of a series of pieces making up
the collection. The Centro Galego de Arte
Contempornea complies with this premise and exhibits part if its pieces under the title Mapas, cosmogonas y puntos de referencia, an exhibition structured in
three parts, which also has the fundamental support of
a meticulous publication in which each one of the pieces is described in detail.
We could highlight the photographs of some authors
such as Vito Acconti, with the piece The Following Piece
(1969); Thomas Ruff, with his photographs C-print
(1983-85), Adrian Piper with The Mythic Being: Let's
have a talk (1975) or Hanne Darboven with Variation,
ink and collage, from the same year. The most recent
pieces are shown by some artists such as Jacobo
Castellano, series Corrales (2004); Virginia Villaplana,
Escenario Doble (2004); Paco Cao, Don't Touch the
White Woman (2005); Pedro Calapez, Composio 1
(2004); Eve Sussman, 89 Seconds at Alczar (2004),
lvaro Negro, S/T (2006) or Teresa Moro with her water
colours Montreal (2005), S/T (2003), S/T (2004),
Institucin de catlogo 2 (2005) among others.
Christina Ferreira, curator of the exhibition, says:
"Each one of these three exhbitions suggests a thematic line that, on the one hand, tries to find an order and
orientation in the changing field of culture (as the metaphors of the map and the referential point show); on the
other hand, it looks for a logic explanation on the origin
and the evolution of the world we live in (that is the reason of the use of the cosmogony metaphor)".
The title of the exhibition comes up to the CGAC desire to the development and defence of their collection;
a defined map such as what stands out in a genre, ability or production. Cosmogonies, created stories trying
to come up to the creation of the world, of the universe and the things within them; and referential point
defined as the piece of information, a report or document to start or complete the exact knowledge of
something. It is a title chosen carefully so as to welcome an exhibition that is the result of the interest in
going deep into the different ways of artistic expression
that are being carried out by a globalized society, as
another way of "educating" the spectator, the citizen,
in this case from the contemporary art point of view, a
task belonging to public bodies in the foreground.

Paranoia
and
Wackelkontakt
tackle
some subjects such as
sexuality, madness, violence and human connections in a metaphoric
and refined way.
The downstairs rooms of
the gallery are divided
into two parts, and in the
first one the photographs occupy all the
space. Wackelkontakt false contact - is a composition of three images
in which the plug connections show how far
and close can the personal relations be established, and in some occasions how frustrating
they can come to be
when there is nobody on
the other side, or when
they are suddenly broken. In Aesthetische
Paranoia, he becomes
the
protagonist,
an
ambiguous and sexless
figure, his face is covered with weak and infinite long hair that goes
straight ahead through
the space of the composition, a neutral room
with a white futon for the
protagonist; everything
is neat and moderate
until the last photograph
in which the figure loses
his composure, his hair
gets tangled, the bed
messes up, everything
turns into a chaos.
In the second room
there is a series of gouaches with bright colours,
loud greens and yellows
that mix with blue and
red as retaining colours
and line markers. The
sexual and organic shapes are very explicit and
the positions of the distorted silhouettes are
constricted, almost with
certain suffering.
As an interesting support
to the exhibition, the
spectator can see the
d o c u m e n t a r y
Freischwinger, a film
about the author's life, in
which he spells out his
artistic evolution minutely by using his own
work to relate each one
of the moments of this
transgressor artist.

The exhibition Growwwing stablishes a dialogue between the space that accommodates a series of pictorial pieces made of wood and methacrylate and
the visual recreation of such space.
One of the walls of the space is reserved to suggest
a psychological experience that stands out the value
of the material and immaterial projecting a virtual
recreation of the own expositive space. The virtual
space is modified thanks to the incorporation of
some elements such as the tree that acts as the
metaphor of the influence and the extensive, or
some graphics in the walls and the floor reproduced
in the pictures, but they are not in the room. This
way, there is an exchange between the real and virtual elements.
The suggested reflection consists of creating value
judgements in the transformation processes taking
part when there is an alteration in the reality of the
plastic language into the virtual language, turning
the material into immaterial and reality into pseudoreality, overcoming the space-temporary limit and
creating a parallelism with the contemporary views
of the non-immersed virtual reality and the process
of representation.
The interaction, the experimentation and the need to
tackle from the artistic field, by means of an exchange space and the dialogue spectator-piece in front of
the window opened at the expositive room, show
how the modification of the real space acts as a
metaphor - the mirror of the multiple virtual applications of the diverse home and professional areas
modifying our social habits nowadays.

toda referencia concreta creando mensajes abstractos: "Big
answers", "Progress in all fields", "Bigger, Faster, Better".

Dior. Estamos ante una
representacin contempornea del juego al
equvoco entre significantes y significados
que fascina al arte y la
cultura desde la antigedad.
ce piece of conversation.
Don Luis plays cards
with his wife and a court
surrounds them, however it is not a static
homely scene what we
are seeing but the escape towards the social
exile of Carlos III's brother because he had
married a plebeian. In A.
Gonlves's
photographs, do his characters steal or sell paintings? Everything entices you to the misunderstanding.
The mixture between
reality
and
fantasy
appears depicted in
some Velazquez's pictures. The Spanish painter,
in his piece Cristo en la
casa de Marta depicts
two women doing the
housework in the foreground, one of them
with a gesture of annoyance, to the bottom of
the canvas; in the top
right corner and acting
as a picture, there is a
reproduction of an scene
of Christ pointing at
Mara in the presence of
an old woman. There is
a real presence of Christ
in the fiction of a room.
In A. Gonalves's photographs there is baroque
fiction and a mixture of
reality and the oneiric
placing a picture within
a picture. The characters
in black are anthropomorphic
inventions
coming from a school of
gladiators or of managers that only exist in
their unreality of Dior
men. We are before a
contemporary representation of the misunderstanding between signifiers and significances
that fascinates art and
culture from time immemorial.

the symbolism of the

chromatic options evoke
the national flag and the

the

leading to a more informal effect with the happening provoked by the

CARROLL DURHAM

arquitectura espaola. La sala contribuy de alguna
manera a ello.

The exhibition Body Worlds has travelled all around the world.
His creator, the German anatomist Gunther von Hagens,
patented the preservation process of corpses known as plastination at the end of the seventies. This method has allowed
him to conceive a new and controversial way of anatomic exhibition using corpses, real human fragments and organs as
study objects. A decade later, owing to the commercial success, those things initially considered as a barbarity, have triggered a series of imitations. Even the natural science museums, which had kept their distance regarding this concept of
anatomy so far, have started to succumb to the temptation to
curate similar exhibitions or to include plastinized human specimens in their permanent collections.
In parallel with this, since 1999 a group of young artists round
the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Peking have organized
some exhibitions in which human fragments and corpses are
included as the artistic media. Their first exhibition Post-Sense
Sensibility: Alien Bodies and Delusion, although it was carried
out outside the institutional spaces, had a far-reaching effect
because of the unusual expositive material. Xiao Yu, one of
the participant artists would be invited to the 49th Biennial of
Venice in 2001. In that occasion, this Mongolian artist showed
his installation Ruan (1999) in which some creatures bred
from the combination of some body elements of mouses, rabbits, cats and doves and the head of a human foetus.1
We have here a new dialogue between art and science,
based on the reconfiguration of the limits and functions
socially conferred on both institutions. Art has been historically understood as the space of aesthetic emancipation as
limited to the terms of representation. On the other hand,
science has been given the liberty of having direct relations
with the human material. This liberty is limited to the ethical commitment of not transgressing the practical and symbolic coordinates of the scientific field.
The actions of Yu and von Hagens point to the disarticulation of both institutional limits. Yu and his colleagues put the
allegoric nature of the artistic gesture in a difficult situation.
They inhibit the easiness of the spectator to sympathize with
cruel images because they are simple illusions, previously
agreed mirages not authorized to go beyond the artistic
context and their metaphorical condition. Yu shows the
spectator an artfact that is no longer a trick. The spectator
cannot find a refuge from the fright caused not by a fictitious
character but by the creator himself. The monster has not
been created with the traditional imitative resources of art
but with a skin very similar to theirs. Yu has broken the
agreement between the artist and the spectator: the one
based on the so-called expressive fallacy. Art is a fallacy
socially accepted as real. But when changing the terms, Yu
asks the spectator that his new aesthetic reality is accept-
ed as a trick. Now the spectator should invent his own fiction by watching this physical, clinic and morbid reality. This
is not part of the social contract of art. Yu has changes the
game rules.
Von Hagens has done the same in the scientific field. This
physician, who has been compared with Josep Mengele by
the western media until recently, has shaken the ethical
basis of the prerogatives the medical science supports the
relation with the human body, either alive or dead. Von
Hagenss challenge does not limit to spread the attributes of
the medical ghetto in the public sphere, starting from what
he calls democratization of the anatomy. His main desecration is to make the deceased become actors. Dancers,
archers, horsemen, chess players do not pose with a mere
didactic aim. Von Hagens has created a poetic of the
anatomical (re)presentation. His post mortem theatre plays
at philosophizing when some specimen is plasticized with
the brain or the heart in the hand, presenting it to the spectator. His exhibitions include some references to art history.
This is the case of a figure holding its own skin, referring to
the famous etching of 1556 of the Andalusian painter
Gaspar Becerra.
The most recent exhibition in the style of Body Worlds and
the most important rival is Bodies The Exhibition; organized by the powerful company Premier Exhibitions Inc. with
headquarters in Atlanta.2 Paradoxically, at the expense of
such rivalry, this exhibition has given the ideas of von Hagens
a solid institutional body and has helped to turn his exquisite corpses into a market product with good prospects.3 The
institutionalization and commercial fetishization of these
human sculptures has also affected art. It seems to be very
far away in time the commotion regarding the stuffed and
dissected animals in the glass cases of the series Historia
Natural by Damien Hirst in the nineties. And nowadays it
seems unnecessary Mona Hatoums endoscopy of her own
body for her video-installation Cuerpos Extraos, with which
she showed the recondite landscapes of the inside body. Art
and science exchange their institutional capitals. Art has broken the mirror of representation and science has acted as a
fragment of this one. We still have to see if such gestures
weaken or reinforce anatomy and the authority of both.
1 This installation was not a great impact because the spectator took it for granted that
they were wax figures, taking into account that Ron Muecks hyper-naturalist sculptures
were not very far away.
2 Bodies... The Exhibition was recently exhibited for the first time in Europe, in the exhibitions centre Beurs van Berlage in msterdam. It has been exhibited in Tampa, New York,
Las Vegas, Miami, Pittsburg, Seattle and Sao Paulo, and it will be shown in Washington DC
and other cities soon.
3 In the case of Bodies... The Exhibition, as in most exhibitions of this kind, all the human
specimens, fragments and organs have been acquired in Dalian, China, in the so-called
City of the Plastination. This way, the use of certain gaps in the Asiatic legislation, has
turned China into the suspicious epicentre of this new meeting between art and science.

Aunque
actualmente
Mar adentro deja Los
Although
nowadays
Truffaut is accused of
political
affectations
and attitude, without
any doubt, we should
praise for the clarity of
his subjectivism; a clarity achieved thanks to
the pen of a film fan
poet who got to distinguish between those
who were going to define himself when he
spoke loud and clear to
talk about them as his
Franoise Truffaut
friends,
lovers
or
parents, and those who
will make possible that
he was distinguished as
the genius who branded
them as incompetent,
stupid or ignorant people. There is nothing
like talking about the
others to talk about
oneself, and Truffaut
was sure of this from
his
beginnings
in
Cahiers d Cinma. And
although the origin of
his cinema was inevitably militant and the
end was limited, he was
really the pioneer of the
Nouvelle Vague and a
great critic who detested the social cinema
and insulted the documental as a method to
"photograph"
reality,
and rightly said that the
critics have no imagination because a imaginative critic could not be
objective, and this lack
of imagination is what
makes them prefer the
bare and sober pieces;
but although the genius's word lasts, his voice
dies with him and it
does not comes back
again; and I miss him
stating his meditations
on those who forget the
slyness and the tolerance of reality to make
a social cinema with the
moderate view of the
critic that Mar Adentro
leaves the untrue Los
lunes al sol or they Te
doy mis ojos; and with
the critical view of Los
otros, Truffaut would
end, there is the "bare"
sensation that they
could almost be their
authors; although there
have always been infiltrations, we have come
to a point in which it is
important to demand
that those ones, who
have failed in their welding, stay Mar Adentro
and any genius comes
back to bring us a
Nueva Ola.
