STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

If I had to sum up my reason for applying for this position in one sentence, it would
be "The quest for knowledge, just like Steve Jobs puts it; Stay hungry, Stay
foolish. Conceiving new ideas and developing systems which would deliver that
promise is a personal goal I have set for myself ever since I got into the University.
My undergraduate studies helped me to realize my potential and the wonderful and
exciting opportunities in the field of Electrical/ Electronic Engineering. Courses
related to Machines, Electronics, power, Computer architecture, and Microprocessor
systems served as a source of inspiration to me. They not only inspired and
motivated me to work hard to develop a sound theoretical foundation, but also
stimulated me to work on numerous projects to broaden my understanding of
engineering principles. Being a member of a team that worked on a project titled
Design and construction of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) in my final year
project strengthened my technical skills and turned out to be a converging point for
my objectives.
After my undergraduate studies, I was awarded an automatic employment as a
graduate assistant in the department as a result of my academic excellence, having
made first class honours. Some of my duties included assisting senior lecturers in
teaching tutorials and organising technical paper presentations. My good
interpersonal skill in and out of lecture halls endeared me to the members of staf
and students of the department.
I acquired my first postgraduate degree in Communication Engineering from same
University in 2009 with a distinction grade and was later drafted by the head of
department to assist in on-going research works in the department. During the
course of my studies, I acquired skills in AutoCAD, C++ programming, MultiSIM,
SIMULINK and MATLAB programming and eventually used the latter in my
dissertation work titled 'Software Implementation of a Linear Time Invariant System
using MATLAB'.
I was awarded a scholarship by PETROLEUM TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT FUND
(PTDF) to study overseas at Masters level, a highly competitive opportunity awarded
based on academic excellence and performance. I eventually had a postgraduate
degree in Automatic Control and Systems Engineering at the University of Sheffield,
UK where I also made a distinction grade.
Concurrently with my studies, I mastered the application of LabVIEW in signal
monitoring and analysis. I attended a number of National Instruments Days in the
UK and acquired some practical skills in signal processing using LabVIEW. During my
dissertation studies titled 'Semi-active implementation of nonlinear damping for
vibration isolation', the skills I had acquired came into play as I was able to simulate
and analyse my data using MATLAB, SIMULINK and LabVIEW which made my
supervisor encourage me to continue with the research studies on his test rig.
I looked forward to a career in the oil and gas sector and consequently, I decided to
pursue an MSc degree in Subsea Engineering all in the quest to stay hungry. My
chosen career as a researcher has been challenging and given me tremendous
exposure to design tools and I seek to take the next step in the realization of my
goals. Higher education is the main key which can improve constructive and
scientific thinking, approach towards new horizons and development of new ideas,
transfer them to pragmatic solutions and achieving the goals by maximizing the

output. I have always aspired to constantly evolve myself as a professional as well

as a researcher in the Subsea industry.
My decision to pursue an MSc in Subsea Engineering at the University of Aberdeen
is highlighted by my intention to be part of the excellent and well-rounded group of
experienced and prospective subsea engineers domiciled at the university. This
group, I discovered, has a unique relationship with the subsea industry both locally
and internationally thereby broadening the horizon of the group. I would regard my
acceptance not only as a great honour and success but also as an obligation for
hard work. It will also avail me of the opportunity to contribute, in my own little way,
to the technological breaks-through recorded by your institution in Subsea
engineering.
