name.ItwasbuilttocommemoratethevisitofKing George V
andQueen Mary.TheGatewaystepsleaddowntothe
waterfront,whereonemaychooseaboatridetoElephanta
Island.TheGateway isbuiltfromyellowbasaltandreinforced
concrete.Indo-Saracenicarchitecturalstyleelementsarederived
fromtheMuslimarchitecturalstylesof16thcentury.The
diameterofthecentraldomeisfifteenmeters.Atthehighest
point,thisdomeis26metersabovetheground.Thisstructure
wasbuiltattheexpenditureof0.05millionUSD(INR2.1million)
bytheGovernmentofIndia.Duetoscarcityoffunds,an

SocietywasregardedundertheAncientMonumentsand
ArchaeologicalSitesandRemainsActof1958.Currently,this
Surveyconsidersabout 3636 monumentsthathavebeen
announcedtobeofnationalimportanceandareregardedasper
theAntiquityandArtTreasureAct1972.ThisSurveyhas
