INTRODUCTION
Some scholars give their opinions for the definition of translation such as Nida
(1969:12) defines that the translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the
closest natural equivalent of the source language message, first in terms of meaning and
secondly in terms of style. But this relatively simple statement requires careful evaluation of
several seemingly contradictory elements.
Newmark (1988) highlights the fact that there was not much written about the theory
of translation. He points out that to be able to translate a text, one has to understand it and
analyse it first. His view of the evolution of translation from the 19 th century and onwards,
such process has as a result, the product, the translated text.
Hornby (1988:81) defines that translation is a complex act of communication in
which the SL-author, the reader as translator and translator as TL-author and the TL-reader
interact.
Munday (2008 :5) states that the process of translation between two different written
languages involves the translator changing an original written text (the ST) in the original
language (the TL) into a written text (the TT) in a different language (the TL).
Translation is used to transfer meaning from one language to another. A written or
spoken source language text will be exchanged by its equivalent written or spoken target
language to find the equivalent meaning between the source and target language. However, in
translating text, the translator will find some problems to achieve the equivalent meaning and
in this case, the non equivalence words between source language and target language will be
found in the translation.
In line with the non equivalent problems, the researcher is really interested in
conducting a study to analyze the translation materials in the Discovery of North Sumatera
Guidebook based on the theory of Baker (1992) to analyze the non equivalence words in the
translation of the Guidebook of North Sumatera. The main reason to choose Bakers theory
because it can offer a more detailed list of conditions upon which the concept of equivalence
and the common types of non equivalence are found.
North Sumatera has got many well-known tourism places which can invite the
International tourists. The tourism has important role in facing the Asean Free Trade Area
(AFTA) which is implemented in 2015. The primary goals of AFTA are to increase ASEANs
competitive edge as a production base in the world market through the elimination, within
ASEAN and to attract more foreign direct investment to ASEAN which has six members,
namely Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Therefore, the
government needs to prepare everything to attract the investors attention. In this case,
Indonesia must prepare itself to improve the quality not only of its goods and services but
also of its human skills, so that it would not serve as a mere market for other countries in the
region but it should also become a big exporter of skilled workers. In promoting our
countries, the media tools of tourism are really necessary to let the tourists or investors know
more about the places they want to visit.
One of the media tools of tourism is the Discovery of North Sumatera Guidebook.
This guidebook contains of much information about North Sumatera. It is written in three
languages, Indonesian, English and Mandarin but the researcher has limited the scope of
analyzing the translation in two languages namely , English and Indonesian language.
According to Baker (1992) non equivalence at word level means that the target
language has no direct equivalent for a word which occurs in the source text. It means that
errors in translation mostly are resulted from non equivalence between the source language
(SL) and the target language (TL). She acknowledges the importance of individual words
during the translation process, since the translator looks firstly at the words as single units in
order to find their equivalent in the target language.
In related to this theory, the study has a purpose to implement Bakers theory to
analyze the translation materials in the Discovery of North Sumatera Guidebook, in line
with the non equivalence words. The comparison of the two languages, English and
Indonesian, will become the data source of this study . The example of the translation which
is not equivalent as in the following :
SL : Propinsi Sumatera Utara berada di bagian Barat Indonesia, terletak pada 1 - 4 LU
dan 98 - 100 BT, sangat strategis dan berada pada jalur pelayaran Internasional
Selat Malaka yang dekat dengan Singapura, Malaysia dan Thailand.
TL : North Sumatera is located at 1 - 4 North Latitude and 98 - 100 East
Longitude, strategically stretched along the International Shipping
Line of the Malacca Strait which is close to Singapore, Malaysia and
Thailand.
From the examples above, there are some words omitted such as
propinsi and bagian Barat Indonesia in target language and the phrase
of sangat strategis is translated into English strategically. In this case,
the translator has added some words to make the non native reader
easier to understand the text.
such as brochures, leaflets, guidebooks, etc., especially for tourists so that the
misunderstanding or misinterpretation will not occur.
