All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit a complete application for
admission. In addition to the application form questions, a complete application includes academic transcripts, test
scores, letters of recommendation, a rsum or curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose, and the application fee.
APPLICATION DEADLINES
All application materials must be received by 5 p.m. eastern time on the deadline date. Deadline dates are provided
for each program in the section labeled Application Deadlines. If an application deadline falls on a Saturday,
Sunday or legal U.S. holiday, then the next business day will be the deadline date.
TEST SCORE REQUIREMENTS
The Graduate School requires that applicants submit official test scores for the general test of the Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) unless an exception is specifically noted under program-specific requirements.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants who are not native English
speakers (this requirement is waived if the applicant has completed a baccalaureate or masters degree at an
institution where the language of instruction is English).
The Graduate School requires official test scores for the GRE and TOEFL. Self-reported test scores and
copies of test score reports from the GRE and TOEFL programs are not considered official. Official test
scores must be sent to us directly from the GRE or TOEFL program; make sure they are sent to New York
UniversityGSAS, code 2596. Refer to the application instructions for complete information about how to
properly submit official test scores to the Graduate School.
Full details about the testing policies are available in our FAQ on testing in the Application Resource Center.
Please read the information carefully.
The Graduate School requires that you apply by using the online application. (Certain applicants to non-degree
programs are not able to use the online application. Refer to Application Policies in the Application Resource
Center.)
If a program recommends or requires a subject test of the GRE, it is specified in the section labeled GRE and
TOEFL.
If a program requires a writing sample, it is described. Please note that the writing sample is in addition to the
personal statement that is a standard part of the application.
If a program has any other special requirements, they will be listed.
Applicants to dual degree programs (programs offered by GSAS and another school at NYU, such as the
School of Law, Medicine, Business, or Public Service) must apply to each school separately. Admission to the
dual degree program is contingent upon acceptance by both schools.

PROGRAM-SPECIFIC APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF THE ANCIENT WORLD
GRE and TOEFL: GRE general test required. TOEFL required of all applicants who are not native English speakers (see Test Score
Requirements on page 1).
Writing Sample: A writing sample is required. It may be a term paper, excerpt from an undergraduate or graduate thesis, or other example of
academic writing, including a lecture delivered at a meeting, or a published article. It should be double-spaced and not exceed 35 pages. If your
writing sample contains non-Roman scripts or other non-standard characters, it may not print properly as part of the online application. Please
check your document carefully. It is best if you send your online writing sample as a pdf document. Be sure to keep a paper copy for your
records. We may ask you to mail, fax, or email a copy directly to the institute if there are problems reading it.
Languages: In addition to the relevant section of the application form, a separate list of all ancient and modern languages (other than English) in
which the applicant has some proficiency is required and should be uploaded on one of the Additional Information pages of the online
application. This list should indicate the applicant's level in each language in concrete terms (e.g., what are the most extensive or difficult texts
that the applicant has read) and how the language was acquired.
