The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is Indias largest power company, which was
set up in 1975. NTPC has been given the status of a Maharatna company in 2010 and is
only one of the four companies to boast of this title by the Government of India. In 2012, the
Forbes Global 2000 ranked NTPC 337th in the category of Worlds Biggest Companies.
There was a need to upgrade all the technological aspects in order for it to expand and
improve its operational efficiency. The Corporate Office of NTPC at New Delhi is required to
acquire all information power generation operations, from its thermal and gas based power
plants spread all over the country, on a real time basis. The existing system was supplied by
CMC in 1991 on a turnkey basis and thus there was a need to upgrade it to the modern
state-of-the-art SCADA software.
CMC took up the responsibility of modernizing all the technological aspects at NTPC
updating of SCADA system (Hardware & Software) for Master Station & Plants, Remote
Terminal Units, VSAT, Microwave, Radio Communications, Design, Development,
implementation and post implementation maintenance.
Background
Client Profile
NTPC has 23 stations located country-wide, out of which 16 are coal based and 7 are gas
based. It is fast emerging as a diversified power major in the entire business of power
production. The mainstay of the company is power generation, but it has ventured into other
projects as well like power trading, consultancy, coal mining and ash utilisation. NTPC is on
a growing spree and aims to meet all the power requirements of the country and has adopted
a multi-pronged growth strategy in a bid to become a 50,000mw plus company by 2012.
Opportunities
The old SCADA system at NTPC was installed in 1991. NTPC was looking for:
A new SCADA system which will be able to merge with the old signals.
Total replacement of old RTUs & central SCADA software & hardware for centralized
collection of all the data pertaining to energy networks from various departments of the
plant over a telemetry system.
CMC upgraded the system with latest WAN & associated SCADA components at a later
stage.
CMCs Solution
Methodology
At each of the power generation plants, a Pentium based SCADA Host with CMCs
Windows based SCADA software INTRAK was deployed at all Local Monitoring Systems
(LMS) spread across the country.
INTRAK acquires data from the switchyard substation of generation plant using existing
RTUs, which in turn acquire the relevant data through transducers and relays.
Man machine Interfaces were provided for engineers and senior personnel to monitoring
the generation in the plant.
Solution Deployed
At each of the generation plant, a SCADA Host with CMCs Windows based SCADA software
was deployed. The SCADA software acquires data from the switchyard substation of
generation plant using RTUs, which in turn acquire through transducers and relays. Man
machine Interfaces were provided for engineers and senior personnel for monitoring the
generation data in the plant.
The data from all the 14 Generation plants was transmitted to NTPC Corporate Office at Delhi
using heterogeneous communication media like 64 Kbps satellite channels, microwave and
terrestrial lines. The combined data from 14 generation plants was displayed in corporate
office using CMCs Unix based SCADA Software OSKER on DEC ALPHA machines.
CMC has also developed and implemented Availability Based Tariff (ABT) software for
planning and monitoring the plant generation with respect to declared capacity, scheduled
generation and actual generation, which helps the generation plants in commercial dealing
using Unit Interchange calculations with transmission companies.
Business Benefits
With the up gradation of the SCADA system at NTPC by CMC, NTPC now enjoys the following
benefits:
Upgrading of RTUs
Availability Based Tariff(ABT)
