THE SEMINAR
A two day National Seminar on a theme Teacher Education at
the Crossroads would be organised in the college premises on
29th and 30th August 2015. The topic was chosen in view of the
challenges of new millennium. Across the globe the teachers
are under pressure. The global monitoring reports also point to
research into the link between teacher quality and the
educational attainment of pupils. There is concern about the
relevance of much pre service training and provision for
continuous professional development. Teaching and learning
are facing uncomfortable dilemma. Rapid Globalization,
tremendous impact of information technology and the
international transformation towards a knowledge driven
economy have made the educators to think of reforms in
education. Issues associated with the basic education
provisions, resource and infrastructural developments,
appropriate and coherent national curricula, quality education
for the masses are grappling day by day. Time has reached to
think of an alternative for teacher professional development
programme in Teacher Training Institutions. Teacher education
in India has been following the same road for over one
hundred and fifty years. That road has reached dead-end from
several points of view. Teachers coming out of the system are
finding themselves inadequate in taking care of learning how
to learn, value-oriented education, and development of higher
mental abilities such as problem solving, critical thinking,
analysis and synthesis that are essential for a learning society.
For meeting the varying learning needs, teacher has to
recognise the sovereignty of the learner, which has not been a
concern of teachers so far, as the certification of the learning is
carried out by external examining bodies through public
examinations. In addition recent developments in information
and communication technologies require that teachers to be
ICT literate for using digital learning resources and are able to
integrate ICT in classroom learning activities. Employment
opportunities are now increasingly shifting to the private
schools and even foreign governments are looking for teachers
for their schools from India. Therefore, the question is whether
there is something beyond the dead-end, which we must still
pursue, or whether we should design and engineer a new road.
Thus the theme of the seminar is quite appropriate in the
present context in view of the recent public notification for two
years of Bachelor of Education Degree course introduced for
bringing quality into the educational process.

presentation of the paper on the theme mentioned in
