TheConfederationofIndianIndustry(CII)has
releasedareporttitledIndiaSkillsReport2014in
partnershipwithWheebox&Peoplestrong.The
reportreleasedtowardstheendof2013isathorough
assessmentofthechallengesthatIndiafacesin
providingmarketableskillstoitsgrowingpopulation
andmakingthememploymentready.
Withamanpowerof1.2437billion,itisironicthat
Indiasuffersfromdearthoftalent?Asperrecent

studiestheseverityofthesituationcanbeestimated
bythefactthatonly10%ofMBAgraduatesofthe
countryareemployableandsameistrueforthe
engineeringgraduateswherethisnumberisaslowas17%.
ThisscarcityofskilledtalentmakesitimpossiblefortheTalentSupplyChaintooperate
effectivelyandisanissuewhichifnottakencareofimmediatelywillbecomeuncontrollable.One
canimaginetheenormityofthechallengeIndiawillfacewheninyear2026,64.8%ofIndias
populationwouldbeintheworkingageof1564years.

ExecutiveSummary
Populationof1.3billion,ofwhichabout0.8billionintheworkingageIndiain2020issurely
somethingtheworldcanlookforwardto.Accordingtoeconomicpredictions,thattimewouldbe
thegoldenGrowtherainthedemographicdividend.Wewouldnotonlyhaveenoughmanpower
tomeetourneedsbutwecanhelptherestoftheworldaswell.
Intheglitzandglamourofthesenumbers,oneoftenchoosestoignorethatintodayseraof
knowledgebasedeconomy,qualityofworkforceismoreimportantthanquantity.Infacthavinga
lowerheadcountofskilledmanpowerismuchbetterthanamanpowerwhoselargerportionis
unemployable.Consideringthepresentsituation,thisisthefutureIndiaisrushingtowards.And
thisisoneofthebiggestchallengesthatweasanationareevergoingtoface.
Researchesshowthatifwecontinueinthecurrentpace,wewouldhaveaskillgapof7580%
acrossIndustrysectors.Therewillbepeoplebutwithskillsthatcorporatedonotrequire,andjobs
forwhichtherightfitisnotavailable.Theeconomicimpactofthisviciouscycleissomethingone
canestimate,butthesocialimpactofhavingapowerhouseofeducatedyetfrustratedyouthwho
aredirectionlesswithnojobsinhandisunimaginable.
Rigorousstepstotacklethischallengearethustheneedofthehour.Thisrequirescombined
effortsfromseveralstakeholders.ConsideringthegravityofthissituationGovernmentiscoming
upwithvariousinitiatives.ANationalSkillDevelopmentCoordinationBoard(NSDCB),
coordinatedbythePlanningCommissionwasestablishedbythePrimeMinisterin2008witha
targetofskilling700millionpeopleby2022.Individualstatesarealsocomingupwithprograms
andpoliciestofacethisproblem.
However,thesuccessoftheseeffortswithoutactiveinvolvementofActorsofthisprocessis
doubtful.Thussincereeffortstoensurepartnershipbetweenthesourceofskills(colleges,
studentsetc.),andtheirdestination(thecorporate)areamust.Itisimperativetoeducatethem
abouteachothersexpectationssothatinformedplansforfuturecanbeprepared.
Thisreportisanefforttowardsthisgoal.Itcapturestheskilllevelsofthesupplysideandneeds
ofthedemandsideofTalentSupplyChain.Withseparatestudiesconductedtounderstandeach
side,thisreporttriestobringinamorerealistic,holisticviewofskillandtalentlandscapeinIndia.

WEST,anemployabilityskillassessmenttestlaunchedonWheebox.comin28States,7Union
Territoriesand1800EducationalCampusesacrossIndiacapturesthecurrentskilllevelsofthe
country.About100000studentsspreadacrossthesecampuseswereassessedon260domain
areasandskillgapsthatarescientificinnaturewerevalidatedusingreliabletalentassessment
tools.Theresultwasanoverallpicturedepictinghowthestudentsrankintermsofskillsthat
wouldbeimperativetojudgetheemployabilityinthecomingtimes.
ThroughEmployerJobSurveymorethan100employersspreadacross10majorsectorslike
Manufacturing,Retail,Infrastructure,ITES/IT,BFSIetc.wereapproachedtogetanideaofjob
demandandpotentialhiringforecastsoftheseemployersforthecomingyear.Resultwasan
industrywisehiringestimateforthecomingyearfordifferentprofiles.
Combiningthesetwoaspects,thisreportisanefforttoformthebasisofeffectivecollaboration
betweenthetwo
endsofTalentSupplyChain.Ononehanditaimstoequipthestudentswithinformationto
accesstothejobpoolinthemarket,ontheothertoprovidetheemployersanaccesstoskill
reservoirofthecountry.
Consideringtheenormityoftheimpact,theskilljobgapisgoingtohaveinthesocioeconomic
environmentofthecountry,platformssuchasIndiaSkillsReporthaveavitalroletoplay.With
thefirsteditionofthereportbeingpresentedtothepeopleofthiscountry,theteamhopesto
bringinmorevalueinthecomingyearsandcontributetowardstakingthecountrytoastageto
reapingthedemographicdividend.
