the illness. However, anti-malarials are recommended for visitors to the Kluge; but even prophylaxis is

not 100% foolproof The best is to avoid being bitten by covering exposed skin, using mosquito repellent
and burning mosquito cols, (especially between dusk and dawn - when mosquitoes are most active). The
normal incubation period for malaria is 7-14 days but may be much longer if one is semi immune or
has taken prophylaxis. A typical malarial attack indudes headache, periodic episodes of sequential chills,
fever and sweating Associated symptoms may indude fatigue, dizziness, muscle and joint pains, wealmess,
vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea If in doubt, seek medical help immediately

History of the

Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park has a rich natural and cultural
history that can be traced back to early mankind.
There is substantial evidence that prehistoric man roamed the
region between 100 000 and 500 000 years ago.

Some landmark dates

1898: The Sabie Game Reserve was established primarily
through the efforts of Paul Kruger, President of the Transvaal
Republic at the time, who was deeply concerned about the rapid
dwindling of wildlife caused by poaching, the increasing trade in
skins and ivory and excessive hunting.

The settlement of Stone Age man between 30 000 and 100 000
years ago is supported by findings of cultural artefacts and
archaeological sites. More than 100 rock paintings and engravings
are evidence of the San's (nomadic hunter-gatherers) movements
through the area. There is also evidence of the presence of Iron
Age man from around 1500 years ago.

1 July 1902: Scottish-born James Stevenson-Hamilton was

appointed South Africa's first official game warden. He was
nicknamed "Skukuza" ("he who sweeps clean") because of his
success in eliminating poaching in the area. He strongly advocated
a change in legal status - from game reserve to national park.

The Kruger National Park today

The Kruger National Park is undoubtedly one of the world's
greatest game parks. It has been praised for its endeavours in
nature conservation, professional management of wildlife and
the safeguarding of African cultural heritage. Over the last few
years, fences that separated the Kruger National Park from
neighbouring reserves have been removed allowing the wildlife
greater access to natural resources as well as increasing the game
viewing opportunities for tourists.

31 May 1926: Parliament passed the National Parks Act: the

Sabie and Shingwedzi Game Reserves were merged and the area
was named the Kruger National Park in honour of its founding
father, Paul Kruger, who had contributed enormously to wildlife
conservation in South Africa.
1927: The Kruger National Park opened to the general public.

The "Big Five"

"The Big Five", a term originally used by hunters, refers to five of the greatest of Africa's wild animals as well as the most dangerous to
hunt. The Big Five are regarded by many as the five top game spots and one is considered privileged to view all these animals during a visit to
the Kruger Park.

African Etephant

Leopard

Lion

Rhinoceros

Buffato

There are approximately 12000

elephant in the Kruger Park. At
puberty, males leave the herd to
form small bachelor groups. An
elephant needs to spend most of
the day eating or drinking to
maintain its daily intake of as
much as 200 litres of water and
250kg of grass. Elephants
frequently charge vehicles but
these are usually only mock
charges. However, remember that
they can be extremely dangerous
and keep a respectful distance!

Leopards are not easily seen as

they are elusive and extremely
well camouflaged. They are
nocturnal with the ability to adapt
to almost any environment and
are therefore found throughout
the Kruger Park. There are
believed to be around 1000 of
these beautiful creatures in the
Park. Leopard cubs are not easily
spotted as their mothers keep
them well hidden from predators.

Africa's largest and strongest

carnivore is so powerful that it can
carry twice its own weight in its
jaws. Lions are very social animals
and live in prides of up to 30 or
more. They are commonly seen
throughout the Kruger Park and
are not easily frightened off by
cars or people.
A lion can eat as much as a quarter of its body mass in one sitting
and can go for days without
eating

The white rhino is a grazer with

a big, wide mouth whereas the
black rhino - a browser - has a
more pointed mouth and uses its
upper lip to strip leaves from
branches. The white rhino is
more easily seen as it prefers open
areas unlike the black rhino which
spends its time in thickets Rhinos
are territorial and demarcate their
territories by regularly defaecating in the same location. These
dunghills are called middens.

These large and powerful creatures are extremely dangerous

when threatened. They reach
1.4m in height and can weigh up
to 800kg. They are social and
form herds, sometimes comprising several hundred buffalo,
although older bulls are often
seen alone or in small groups.
They tend to live near water in
grassy areas although they are
