and that He uses us in building His Church in Poland.
We thank God for YOU who for 35 years stay behind us with your prayers and

SERVICE OF

IREK WOLOSZCZYK

have been truly blessed in the last months of 1988 to go and visit

the Panhandle area of

Oklahoma and Texas where

the Churches have had their

annual Hi-Plains School of Missions. Being part of that program was a double
thrill for me. First of all/ touring along with five other missionaries, we
could visit several congregations, meet many brothers and sisters in Christ,
tie new friendships, and share the news of our respective ministries there.
Secondly, for the first time since I came to the United States, was I so
overwhelmed by the distances and the size of this country. I have never seen
before such straight-and-long-for-miles roads, vast prairies with so many
cattle on them, etc. And it seemed that the further West I went, the bigger

the country grew!

(0, beautiful for spacious skies...!)

On the way home, I was able to stop and visit also several congregations
to whom I want to express my gratitude for their hospitality and the opport
unity given me to preach and share with them the news of our work in Poland.
These churches are: Glendale Church of Christ in Springfield, MO; Jennings
Christian Church

and Mrs. Melba White

in St.Louis, MO;

Linnwood Church of

Christ and Bro. John Muellen in Lafayette, IN; Lakeside Christian Church in
Ft. Mitchell, KY; Jamestown Church of Christ in Jamestown, OH; and Fairfield
Church of Christ in Lancaster, OH.

Special thanks to Mark

their hospitality and help in promoting our Polish
and congregation, and for taking a special care of me
trip.

Back home, the usual tasks of mailing literature and newsletters, trans
lating letters and writing articles were waiting for me. The correspondence
accumulated.

Spending the Christmas Eve with the Bajkos was

at home. Those special moments together made us
blessedness of that day when Jesus was bom and the
for all who accepted Him as their Savior even today

like spending Christmas

reflect again upon the
blessings that followed
in this country and the

coimtry we serve, Poland.

The new year 1989 opens up with many promising opportunities to serve
our Lord, to preach the Gospel and to build God's Kingdom in Poland. I want
to be part of that exciting experience and "make the Heaven rejoice!"
May God bless us all in His service! Thank you for your prayers for us and
your support.

IMPRESSIONS OF MY VISIT TO POLAND

by C. Waj^e Murphy

One of the most inspiring and inpressive worship services of which I

have ever been a part took place ill the Church of Christ in Kolobrzeg/
Poland. The building was located within a short walking distance of the
Baltic Sea. It had originally been built as a bakery; today one can go there

for the Bread of Life. The building \Ms overfilled with people standing all
around the crowded pews. People greeted us as if we were members of their

family who had come for a visit.

Theiif language was different, some worship

customs were different/ but we preached the same Gospel.

By visiting Poland in 1987 it^ er^tire perspective of the work of the

Department of Missions has changed. People and places have taken on a new
significance. I saw crowded buildings. I saw houses.that were used as church

buildings. Everywhere we went the coirjnitment of the people was evident as

they came to hear the Word proclaimed.

We did not speak their language/ but

when we met around the Lord's Table we were "one Body."

I have been associated with the Department of Missions since 1977.

appreciation for Paul and Dela Bajko continues to grow.

My

The work that they

do cannot be measured - this has been [evident by the growth of the churches
in Poland.

The needs in Poland are still great even though much has been done over

the years.

There are churches needed din so many areas and church buildings

to be erected or renovated.

I know of no mission work where a dollar means

as much as one given to the Department of Missions of the work of the Polish
Ministry. I am proud to be just a small part of this great work. I anxiously
await another visit to Poland in 1990.

DEAR FRIENDS,

William Walker

Apostle Paul in letter to Romans, chapter 10:14-15 said: "How then they
shall call on Him in Whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe
in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a prea
cher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As is written:
How
beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Gospel of peace, who bring
glad tidings of good thingsi"
We thank God that you send us to reach people for Christ in Poland; peo
ple who call themselves Christians but are far from Christ; people who still
walk in darkness; people who are disappointed in their religious and politi
cal leaders.

There are many people in Poland who are searching for thruth and salva tion.

Last year we were able to give financial and spiritual assistance to over
30 ministers in Poland as they preached the Gospel.
Others write to us for literature. Bibles, Songbooks, Medicine and advice.
Because of you we are able to give them what they need to find Christ or to
do the work in reaching people for Christ and to encourage others to
serve
the Lord in thruth and spirit.
It all is done because af YOU -YOUR prayers, love, concern and financial assis

Our summer has past so fast and the fall is already

Our fall this year is truly

beautiful.

As you know at the end of the summer we celebrated the 40th anniversary of
our congregation in Warsaw.Tliere was much activity and work surrounding the
event, but it was well worth the effort for us to take that time to look
back. Reflection on the past enriches and deepens the experience of life in
the present. Maybe bacause I myself am forty, I had strong feelings about
that jubilee - forty years is quite a time. The celebration itself is impor
tant, but it lasts just a short moment, and then it is gone. But the jubilee
reminds us of the fact that something has happened and past
away, and/or
that something was accomplished. It speaks of a work done by men with their
limitations and weaknesses, but also speaks of talent, heart, ingenuity, de
dication, etc.

And you. Brother Paul, played a significant role in that work. You have
already received the official letter of gratitude from the Church and
the
title of the Honorary Member of our congregation. But, I would like to ex
press my personal gratitude to you for your heart, endurance and zeal shown
in the ministry of spreading the Gospel to our fellow country men.
Brother
Paul, what I will say is nothing new to you, but still let me tell you how

I see things concerning you. You had the same choice that many other Chris
tians that went overseas to America had, the choice of making a career

and

a living there. But you chose instead to carry on evangelism to our country

of Poland. In all simplicity, I want to thank you for your pain, your strug
gling with and overcoming the difficulties, and for straining your ingenui
ty in order to accomplish something for us in this country,
A week ago, I attended the Feast of the Harvest in Kolobrzeg. Ten years ago
that congregation was just a handful of people. Today it is a large conregation. Peter Karel works hard there of course, but how much would he have ac

complished without your help?

GREAT

TRAGEDY

Benjamin Bajenski, the 14 year old son of George and Vera, from Global
Radio Ministries-Polish Ministry, was killed by a school bus February 16,89
on his way to school.

This tragic news filled our hearts with sadness and eyes with tears.
Benji, as we called him, was a very promissing boy, bright and intelli
gent, kind-hearted and a good Christian.
We express our deepest sympathy to George and Vera and pray that the
Lord will comfort them and give them strength to continue in their ministry.
Those, who would wish to send them a word of sympathy and encouragement,
there is their address;

AN OPEN LETTER TO PAUL AND DELA BAJKO.

Congratulations to you on the coirp^etion of 35 years of service to the

Lord in the Polish Ministry!

Speaking for myself personally, and on behalf

of Norton Church of Christ, here in Cjoluiribus, Oh, we count it a privilege

to have been associated with you in this work for well over half those years.
As time goes by, I am continually amazed at the depth of your devotion
to the work. The quality and quantity of your accoirplishments in the Lord

is enough to put workers half your age to shame.

As a long-term member of

The Guidance Committee, I know that th!is is true. But I am impressed still
more with what I regard as your ever-growing ability to do and to teach the
things of Christ. Of course, you two have had an understanding of Poland
from the time of your birth. Unlike sbme others, you have known the Polish
language and the culture from your youth. You are well aware of the strengths
and weaknesses of the people you serve.

Other missionaries must leam those

things. More than a few have not managed to leam them well. Finally, for
now, I have always found your absolute honesty impressive. You have never
yielded to the temptation to distort the truth, however slightly, for the
sake of appearances. We appreciate you for these things.
I know that all praise is due to God.

"Great things He has done!"

But I

praise God for you, and for all who la|bor together faithfully with you on
each side of the ocean. Paul and Dela, may our Father in heaven give you both
an ever-increasing satisfaction in His service.
May He grant you the richly
deserved joy that comes with the sight ojf more and more fruit for your labors
until your work on earth is done.
Yours in Him,
William B. Walker

GOD'S OPM BOOR!

"SEE, I HAVE PLACED BEFORE YOU AN OPEN DOOR THAT NO ONE CAN SHUT.
THOUOi YOU HAVE LITTLE STRENGTH,
YET YOU HAVE KEPT MY WORD AND

NOT DENIED MY NAME."

(Rev.3:8)

With these encouraging words as a motto, the Church in Kolobrzeg,

Poland, celebrated last year its 10th Anniversary. That fast growing congre
gation, that in eleven years grew from 6 to over 200 people, is a wonderful
exairple of the magnificent work that the Lord has been doing in Poland over
the years.

Today, in spite of some local cases of persecution from the Polish

Catholic Church, and, in spite of generally very poor economical conditions
in Poland, the Lord is opening the door of religious freedom that allows our
Brothers and Sisters there to take courage and receive strength to grow as
Christ's glorious Church that "declares the praises of Him who called them
out of darkness into His wonderful light!"
However, many people in Poland still live in spiritual darkness; many
s t i l l search for truth and need salvation.

For us, in this great and much blessed country of America, the Lord is
opening the door for many opportunities to assist and help our Brothers and
Sisters in Poland. As the Church grows there, the needs grow along. And we
are the ones here that can meet those needs. People, more than ever, write to
us asking for Christian literature. Bibles, songbooks, medicine, advice, etc.
and express their deep gratitude for whatever help they are receiving. Here
are some l e t t e r s from Poland:

"Dear Bro. and Sister Bajko,

Praise be to our Lord!

these few words wishing you God's

"Dear Brother in Christ,

Greetings! May God's peace be with you!.

I turn to you, dear Brother, because,
order to restore my health, I need
a specific medicine that is impossible to find here in Poland. I am 55 years
old. My husband is 59, and we have two married daughters and a 10 years old
son.
I would like to live just a little bit longer in order, at least, to
give the needed attention and motherly love to my little boy till he grows up.
Because I don't have that medicine, my health and physical condition are de

If you could do that for me, tell me how I can pay you back in order to ex

Please, help me with this. I thank you before hand.

The occurring changes in the communist world today and the policy of
"openeness" followed by Russia give more freedom of worship to our Brothers
and Sisters in Poland, but their spiritual and material needs are still not
met in the process, but rather are greater than ever.
God is opening a door for us in America to the opportunity of a greater
service to Him and His people in Poland. We need to pray that this door may
not be shut, and that we may be the instruments God will use to bring grace
and peace to millions in Poland who still live without Christ!
CONGRATULATIONS !

TRIP TO POLAND

On May 31, 1989, Bro. Paul Bajko left Dulles International Airport in
Washington, D.C., and flew to Poland in order to travel extensively, visit
the churches and meet with the Polish preachers there.
On his trip he was joined by a team of American preachers and teachers

and their wives who also will travel in all Poland,

preach the Gospel and

encourage God's people there.

The highlights of this trip will be the meeting in the capital city of

Poland, Warsaw, with the students of the Correspondence Bible Seminary for
the end of their school year and graduation, and the dedication -celebration
service in Ostroda of the Home for the Senior Citizens during which Bro.
Paul will present a special monetary gift from the American Christians.
The next issue of our newsletter will give you a full report of that trip.

IREK'S SERVICE

The Lord is good and to serve Him is a joy! The months of April and Nfey
were particularly loaded for me with tasks that had to be finished before
Bro. Paul's trip to Poland: packing and mailing of our monthly Polish maga

zine "Drogowskaz" and other Christian literature to Poland, tape-recording

of 2 radio programs with songs and sermons in Polish, finishing the transla
tion into Polish of an English book oni the basic principles of VBS - idea and
ministry not known yet in Poland, etc.
Traveling those past months, whether by myself or with Bro. Paul, was a
real thrill. I could share God's Word, ping and share the news of our Polish
Ministry with Fairmont Christian Church in Richmond,VA, Cumberland Christian
Church in CumberIcind, IN, and with Winifred Road Church of Christ in Cumber

land, MD. I want to thank all those who made those trips possible for the
beautifully unforgettable moments!
I hear already the American young people singing "B6g dobry jest,"i.e.
"God is so good," in Polish again this summer as I will visit the different

Christian Service cait^s and speak of tiie amazing things God is doing in Po
land today. Two weeks of VBS in June at Levittown, PA, a week of camp in July

in Michigan, and a week in August at ]jndian Lake Christian Service camp in

Maryland are my mission fields this summer.

May God bless that time in His

service!

Recently there is hardly a day without news in our newspapers and TV about
the political and economical situation in Poland.

There are worrisome news and good news, but the best news is the GOOD NEWS of
salvation which reaches Polish people.
With that GOOD NEWS we went in June to Poland, where we have seen the excellent
work of the Lord.

Together with Bro. and Sister Bob Martin, from Johnson Bible College, I de
parted to Poland May 31.

With some delays we reached Warsaw June 1st..late

homes, conferences, etc. There was no time for reading newspaper, to watch
TV or discuss economical situation and political changes in Poland.
Bro. and Sister Martin travelled with Bro, Michal Weremijewicz, director
of the Correspondence Bible Seminary and I travelled allone for the next 8
days begining ray preaching in the Warsaw Church of Christ, then going toBiala Podlaska, Zalesie, Czarna Srednia, Sielc, Bialystok, Siemiatycze,. Bielsk
Podlaski and Szeszyly.
In all those Churches where are ministering Brothers: Andrew Bajenski, Peter
Bronowicki, Sr., Peter Bronowicki, Jr., Emil Hetmaniok, Zbigniew Szymczuk,
Olek Zegunia, Kostek Jakoniuk and Konstanty Zegunia, I saw great progress.
New souls are added to the Church, buildings are errected or enlarged.
In the conference with area preachers I noticed their desire for greater ef
fort in winning souls for Christ and fellowship.
On June 9 I returned to Warsaw to meet

more preachers from the States

who spent the next 7-12 days in Poland.

That day we met with the students of the Correspondence Bible Seminary where
Bro. Martin was lecturing already for 3 days. It was great to see younger
and older students preparing themselves for the ministry in the Lord's Vine
yard and hear wondeful report from Bro. Michal Weremiejewicz,
June 10th we were devided into two groups and went different directions:
Itys.elf, Bro. and Sister Bill Smith from Cumberland Christian Church, Ind,
Bro. and Sister Gerald Moreland from Markle Church of Christ, Ind, and Cathe

rine Eddleblotte, Gerald's sister in-law went to Polczyn Zdroj, Kolobrzeg,

At the dedication of Senior Citizens Home in Ostroda

Each day we had services with overflowing houses of worship. People were eager
to hear the Gospel.

We saw work which was done on a new church building in Bialogard, a newly pur

chased building in Gryfice, a beautifully renovated building in Lidzbark

and
the need for repairing of the building in Olsztyn.
Also we were able to purchase new building for the newly established mission
place in Zlotow where the elder of the Church in Kolobrzeg is moving to lead
the new work.

Bro. Richard Sprague from International Disaster Emergency Service and

Norman Weaver from Mission Services together with Kostek Jakoniuk went
to
Eastern part of Poland where they visited churches in Bielsk Podlaski, Siemiatycze, Sielc, Czarna Srednia and Biala Podlaska.
June 17,

I spent all day in conference with the Executive Committee of

the Churches of Christ where in details

we discussed the work in Poland,

achievements, failures and needs, again emphasizing greater effort in evan

gelism and establishing new churches.
June 18 was the highlight of the trip. - All of us met in Ostroda, where
we have Christian Service Camp, a Church and a Home for Senior Citizens.
Paul Wrobel is the minister of the Church and director of the Home,
-

It was the day of dedication of the completely rebuilt Sanctuary and the
Home of Senior Citizens which was destroyed by fire 3 years ago.

Two years ago International Disaster Emergency Service gave S 5000.00

toward that project and this year another S 2500.00.
The Home has 8 beautiful rooms and in October they will be occupied by 16
Senior Citizens from Churches of Christ.

Bro. Richard Sprague was the dedicatory speaker, who brought a challenging

message. The rest of us gave short messages and greetings. The Church in
Ostroda presented to Bro. Sprague, Bajko, Tomaszewski and Biernacki flowers
and expressed appreciation and thanks for contributions and work put into
restoring the Home.

After the service there was "Agape" with great fellowship around the tables
On the way to Warsaw we stopped in Ciechanow, a mission station of the
Pulawska Street Church of Christ in Warsaw. There is a beutiful building
and the work is led by Krzysztof Pietrzak, a dedicated man od God,
June 20th all American guests departed and I remained in Poland for
another several days to visit Churches in the South and also to meet ray
brothers and sisters and other relatives from the Soviet Union whom I did
not see for 45 years.

After visiting and preaching in Churches in Eastern, North Western

Northern parts of Poland, we arrived in Warsaw.

and

Here I was able to meet my 2 brothers and 3 sisters with their familiesabout 30 people all together from Soviet Union. IT WAS A GREAT REUNION!
We spent hours in conversation about life in Russia and especially about
spiritual life.

The part of Soviet Union where they live was Poland before the Second World
War, where we had many churches of Christ.

For years they suffered persecution. All Churches were incorporated into one

Evangelical Christian-Baptist Union where they had limited freedom to worship

in registered churches. There was much limitation put on children and young
people. It was forbidden to take children to church, and only at the age of
18 young people were allowed to be baptized.
There was constant shortage of Bibles, literature, songbooks, etc.

Lately because of "glasnost" they got more freedom to worship, visit and evangelize.

Today doors are open for sending there Bibles and Christian literature.

These opportunities are redeemed by us and we ship many packages with Bibles
and literature directly from USA.

At the same time we engaged several preachers in Poland to send hundreds of

Bibles from Poland to the Soviet Union.

Also we keep several thousands Bib

les and literature for those people from Russia who visit Poland and worship
in our churches, and on their way back they carry with them full suitcases
of Bibles, Bibles for children and songbooks.

There is great spiritual hunger and we try to supply the spiritual food.

Together with almost all members of my family from the Soviet Union we
went South where we visited some historical places, and every evening we had
services in Churches: in

Dobrowa Gornicza, Katowice, Sosnowiec. We held one

day conference with the area preachers, and on Sunday June 25 a glorious de
dication of the newly errected Church building in Rybnik took place.
Bro. Gutkowski, minister, together with other members put much effort and
hundreds of hours of work into this building. We supplied finaces for ma
terial.

It was a great day for the young congregation. The sanctuary was filled
to
capacity, and the service lasted 3 hours - songs, messages, congratulations.
Lord's Supper, thanks, dedication.
Next day I visited several homes in the Southern part of Poland and returned
to Warsaw for a short meeting with the Director of the Religious Affairs and
some members of the Executive Committee of the Church of the Congregatios of
Christ.

June 28 I departed

to

London, England.

Here I was met by Bro. Antoni Kosciecha who brodcasts the Gospel to Poland
through IBRA Station in Lisbon, Portugal. I read several letters from the
listeners and saw how important the Radio ministry is.
After a short rest of one day, we went North to the city of Nottingham

to

to visit several families where we had a great service in one of the homes.

After return to London I preached in two more places to the Slavic people.
All in all my trip was tiresome but glorious,
I saw radiant Christians despite of a gloomy economical situation; I saw
working preachers; I was able to preach almost every day and some days se
veral times; I saw buildings being built or purchased with our help, and I
saw determination of our preachers to stay in Poland and to preach.
There is a trend in Poland like in many other Socialistic countries to leave

the country for a better life in America or any other Western country.
Many denominational churches loose many of their ministers. We do not.

We

did not loose a single one.

All of them are in our prayers and support, and stay firmly on the ground
preaching the Gospel.

We thank God for that.

But they need more prayers and more help in purchasing places of worship in
new areas.

They also need more lierature.

All of us who visited Poland this year, saw great things done in Poland^

Bro. Bill Smith summarized the situation:

again.

"The Church in Poland

is

well and alive; progresses slowly but stadily and is dedicated to saving
souls.

Christians are content with what they have and share with others.

There is great hospitality - beautiful expression of love.

Spirit of the Lord works in the lives of people and prayers are answered."
