Group Reading discussions:

preferred the Corbett reading because it was easier to understand

feel like we related to a lot of things that we have heard about
didnt like the examples in Welch
protest- whos at fault who is responsible
protests are usually deemed as not civil

both readings are questioning total aspect of protests

open hand is not as affective, which is why people go to the close fists
technology is relied on so open hand can be affective, dont have to worry about getting
arrested etc.
How are they related (Corbett and Welch)
-Corbett was less in favor of closed fist (meeting example) with closed fists may be affective
does not usually leave room for discussion. Welch was saying closed fist was more
uncomfortable and less back and fourth but also affective. No back and fourth discussion,
women were holding hands etc. Says that the closed fists moments open up the floor for
discussion.
- He is old school with his arguments
Wayne BoothCorbett -uses to strengthen argument
Welch- critiques Booth
Overlaps- yes its affective but it is not the best way to go about protesting
Speaker: Nick
Social Media- could be a good strategy for open hand rhetoric to see change
-issue with open hand dialog is that its rarely used from a able bodied privilege perspective
-its a tool of controlling the narrative
-daily orange covered, time warner etc. covered the protest
-Comments
ex. another example of huge costs on the majority for a very small minority, Want accessible
housing You and your family pay for it Bostonway
-feels they were too open handed allowing people to troll
- feels its a legit concern, apart of the majority
- what happens when we do
Views on open hand- the disability community would argue that its a dangerous composition to
go with the open hand approach in this instance because of its easy manipulation on how it can
be misunderstood. closed fists allows control of the narrative from the people by the people.
Open hand may be considered its charity or read into the message differently that is not really
there you are so inspiring just because i live and breath if i was disabled i would die kinda
thing with open hand, not so much accessibility.
Positionally- its very different in terms of rhetorical strategies, as appose to someone who was
a privilege identity) white male heterosexual non disabled upper middle class)
Power dynamics:?
Retro fit: to alter the bathroom to make it wheelchair accessible, retro actively
opposite of that would be creating the environment that is designed with the largest diversity in
mind from the beginning
Radical Accessibility Project:

less than five percent of the house sin syracuse are wheel chair accessible, would like to buy
a house and expand the project
issue is there is little financial power
appeal to the non disabled comunity but still control the narrative and make it what we need

Op-eds-How to :
Define your words such as retro fit
What is a claim? A claim is an idea you are arguing for, by taking a stance on an issue. You can
take the stance and provide evidence to strengthen your argument. Be sure to cite and qualify
your choices
Could use Nicks stories, the ADA and Syracuse , as well as look at the Facebook page
- there is no objective truth if you dont care about it. How do you connect?
Nitty Gritty:
Three paragraphs- brainstorm
What would you choose and go through the website
How can you frame the issue?
Rlaproject.com
Personal vs. Public- by necessity
Think of your audience, ethos as students within Syracuse community, non physically disabled
