JAFFA CLUB SPECIAL

Jaffa Club (Jesus a friend for all), a club for children in school
years 3-6, continues to meet once a month on the first Thursday of
the month. We have a busy time with games, craft and Bible

On Thurs 1st April we are holding a JAFFA CLUB EASTER SPECIAL.
This will run at usual Jaffa time of 6.00-7.30pm in the church hall.
So if you are in School Years 3-6 and would like to come along and
try Jaffa, do give me a ring or email to book a place.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARRY SMITH!

Harry will be 100 years old on 13th March 2010. His

friend, Eddie Harper, tells us about his life…

Harry’s life started in a little village near Chesterfield.

Schooling started at the age of 3 years and finished
when he was 14. He then took an apprenticeship of 5
years, finishing with a move to Reigate, where at
Buckland Road Church, he met his wife-to-be,
Alice Mary. Their marriage was to last 60 years. Alice died in 2001.
Working at Reigate, Harry formed a bond with Edward King, and the two
became partners as ‘King and Smith Hairdressers’. That partnership was to
last 48 years, during which time they owned three different shops in East
Grinstead.
In 1940, Harry and Alice’s daughter, Margaret, was born. She now lives in
Cheltenham.
Harry joined the Royal Navy in early 1942 and was demobbed in 1946.
During his first service, he was awarded seven medals! This was due to the
many theatres of war that his ship was involved in. After the war, he
continued with his partner in business until retirement aged 75.
Harry, who lives at 16 Halsford Park, has been in the house for 74 years. He
and Alice attended St John’s, starting in 1937, twice on Sundays - 8am and
Evensong.
Harry now has a mobility scooter which enables him to get out
and about.
Asked what he wanted for his birthday, Harry replied,
“Nothing really. Well, it would be nice to see a few visitors
now and again.”
God Bless you, Harry Smith!
If you know Harry, please pop in and say hello at
3pm on Saturday 13th March, in the Church Hall.
