AT ARVERNE BY THE SEA

- 68-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd -

By Dylan Watton

For three long years, the building

sat dormant, a cruel reminder of a
storm long since passed. But on a
hot and humid Tuesday in September, hope sprang from it like Pandoras Box, inviting in a large community contingent, elected officials,
and other leaders to come in and experience its rebirth. Yes, after Hurricane Sandy caused four feet of water
to rush in and ruin the books, movies, and other items that lined its
walls, Peninsula Library reopened
with great fanfare and ceremony.
Bridget Quinn-Carey, interim
president and CEO of Queens Library, recounted the trying days directly after the storm and thanked
the librarys longtime staff for coming together in a time of great turmoil. Im hoping that this is a sign
that we are still recovering from
Hurricane Sandy, she said. This
library truly looks better than ever.
Queens Borough President Melinda
Katz commended Rockaways elected representatives for their continued support of the peninsula and
the library itself. Its an amazing
collection of elected officials, Katz
said. Its amazing after Sandy how
much that was tested time and time
again. To have fighters like that is the
reason that Peninsula Library and
so much work has been done out
here.
When you realize [recovery] is
going to take time, you appreciate
the small steps, Assemblyman Phil
Goldfeder said. But today is not a
small step, today is a huge step not
just for the library but for everybody
who drives past this building. We
drive by and we say Look what weve
been through, but look what we can
achieve. Councilman Eric Ulrich
stressed that the rebuilt facility is for
the people. This is your library, he
said. It doesnt belong to the government or the elected officials, it really belongs to you, the community.
I know that people were feeling very
anxious about how long this renovation and rebuilding was going to
take, but when you look around
the room and around the building
today, dont you think it was worth

the wait? Carl Koerner, Chairman

of the Board of Trustees for Queens
Library, grew up in Rockaway and
was thankful for the new buildings
opening. Were thrilled to finally get
this done, he said. The people of
Rockaway deserve a beautiful new
building like this. Among the other
elected officials who attended were
State Senator Joe Addabbo, City
Council and Majority Leader Jimmy
Van Bramer, along with representatives from Councilman Donovan
Richards and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viventos offices.
Among the new additions to the
library are a completely new interior,
an expanded adult learning center
and an expanded childrens center, a
teens area with gaming and reading
spots, all new library collections and
computers, and a community/program room that can be used even
when the library is closed to the
public. Measures were also put into
place to help prevent against future
weather related damage.
Just days before the library had its
grand opening ceremony, the Rockaway Beach Civic Association spent
Friday, September 5 and Saturday,
September 6 landscaping the outside
of the building, putting in new plants
and trees to add a charming aesthetic
to the entrance of the building. We
wanted to show our appreciation for
the library opening, Bridget Klapinski, vice president of the organization, said. Weve done similar things
around the neighborhood like beach
cleanups, so this was our little way of
contributing. This will be a beautiful
new facility and cultural hub for the
community like it always was. The
association also presented a $350
check to the library for the purchase
of a new blue spruce tree outside the
building.
To close the ceremony, Octavia
King and Angel Lyons, two students
at the nearby Waterside Childrens
Studio School (PS 317Q) read poetry. In one, entitled A Friend, they
read: A friend is a friend/a friend
to the end/so shes loyal faithful
and true. One hopes that for many
years to come, Peninsula library can
remain a loyal friend to Rockaway.

Summer Isnt Over Lots To Do !

By Katie McFadden

Labor Day may be behind us,

but dont mourn the loss of summer just yet. Theres still so much
more to enjoy. We might not get
an endless summer, but with continuously hot temperatures, an
extended beach season and a calendar full of events, it seems that
September is just a sweet summer
extension.
Labor Day typically marks the
final day for lifeguards, but this
year, theyre sticking around for
a few more. With $687,000 being
allocated by the City, the Parks
Department has been able to extend the beach season through
September 13 at the most popular
beaches, including our beloved
Rockaway.
The only thing that couldnt
be extended was summer vacation for high school and college
students and those who teach.
Many of them guard our beaches
in the summer, so with the extension comes a few limitations.
Only the following beaches will be
staffed during through September
13: Beach 15 to Beach 18; Beach
29 and Beach 30; Beach 58 and
Beach 59; Beach 77 and Beach
78; Beach 84 and Beach 85; Beach
96 through Beach 98; Beach 104
through Beach 106; Beach 115
through Beach 120; Beach 126
through Beach 131; and Beach
136 through Beach 143.
Riis Park beaches will also remain open a little longer. Other
National Park Service beaches are
officially closed for the season,
but lifeguards will remain in their
towers at Riis from Bays 1 through
9. Lifeguards are on duty from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. until September 13.
With the beaches staying open,
the concessions have even more
of a reason to continue the party.
The new Riis Park Beach Bazaar
has been a big hit this summer.
So much so that the owners have
decided to extend the season. The
Riis Park Beach Bazaar will be
open every day until September
27 and they have a full calendar
of karaoke, DJs and live music.
The Riis Park parking lot is also
free since Labor Day. If heading
to Riis, be sure to walk by the old
bathhouse to see Rockaway Summers Issue 3D, a large-scale art
exhibition featuring the photos
and paintings of local and international artists, showcasing some
highlights of the peninsula.
The Rockaway boardwalk concessions will also be staying open
a little longer. The Beach 106 concession, featuring Caracas, will
remain open every day through
September 13 and then weekends

only until Sunday, September 27.

The largest concession, Beach 97,
featuring Low Tide Bar, will remain
open every day until Sunday, September 20. They will host a block
party featuring Solshyne starting at
2 p.m. on September 19. The Beach
86 concessions featuring Rippers
will be open seven days a week until September 27 and will finish the
season with St. Rippers Day. Not a
concession, but still a summer exclusive, Connollys Bar has also extended its season and will keep the
frozens cold for two more weekends. Theyll be open from noon
until dark on September 12, 13, 19
and 20.
Be sure to mark your calendars.
Theres a lot of fun coming up
each weekend this month, starting with this one. Got skills? Show
it off at Rockaways First Annual
Talent Show presented by Citysticks. The show starts at 7 p.m. at
the Beach 97 Concession on Friday, September 11. If interested in
performing, sign up at www.rockawaybeach97.com/talent-show.
Get your bike ready for the 5th
Annual Bike Parade on Saturday,
September 12. Wear a costume
representing your favorite Rockaway theme and join in the fun. The
parade kicks off at 11 a.m. from
Firehouse 59 (5803 Rockaway
Beach Boulevard) and will continue along Shore Front Parkway
and the boardwalk to Beach 97.
If interested in participating, register at www.rwalliance.org/rwa/
events. Make sure to stop by the
Honey Fest at Beach 97 on Saturday as well. In its 5th year, the allday family-fun festival kicks off
at 11 a.m. There will be art, food,
music, film, kids arts and crafts,
and more than 20 vendors selling
honey and other bee products. If
you make your way to Fort Tilden,
head to Studio T-7 Gallery at 4:30
p.m. for a free concert by Quintet
of the Americas.
If youd rather be on the water this
weekend, the North Channel Yacht
Clubs 26th Annual Fluke Fishing
Tournament starts at 7 a.m. with
weigh-in at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 12. Registration is Thursday, September 10 at 1622 Church

The Lazer Speaks

Generational Sands

By Lou Pastina
This past Labor Day weekend
was definitely one for the books!
Spectacular weather, clean, warm
ocean waters with friends and
family galore. As I walked up the
beach toward Riis Park on Sunday
toward the slowly setting summer
sun, I looked up above the sand
cutout that the ocean had worn
away from the shore, and saw families young and old celebrating the
end of summer.
A retreat to the porch after the
sunset was followed by conversation with a group of friends who
grew up at the beach together but
now live elsewhere. Stories of their
youth and romantic memories
of living in Rockaway were mixed
with the realities by those that still
live here.
When I got married and moved
to the beach there was a generation of people here who had moved
from the Bronx or Queens, and
some who had been here longer,
that raised their families here. Big
houses were filled with big families with stories about brothers
and sisters and aunts and uncles.
The faces became familiar over
the years, sometimes connecting
names and relationships across

the various family trees of Rockaway.

Many of those same families
were on the beach this weekend
soaking up every last bit of the
surf and sun. Some, however, were
celebrating the life of one just recently lost. So it was on Labor Day
that I found myself with the wife
at a funeral mass up the block. As
I sat in the pew I saw many silver
haired men and women, but mostly women, friends who had spent
a lifetime raising their families and
keeping the traditions alive, gently
move into the rows of seats. They
were followed a little later by the
next generation of families, their
kids, with their kids in tow, and before you knew it the entire church
was filled and it was standing room
only.
The person who had left this
earth to rejoin her husband was a
kindly soul who never had a bad
word to say about anyone. In fact
when I first came on the scene
many years ago she always treated
me like I had lived here forever,
like I was one of the regulars, not
just down for the day. She had the
sweetest disposition and I would
tell her daughter that she reminded me of Doris Day because the

sun always seemed to be shining

around her.
The mass was beautifully conducted and her son gave a eulogy
that any mom would be proud
of. He was sweet, he was funny,
he was touching, and he was, in
short, his mothers son.
As the congregation filed out
of the church, there were smiles
on all the faces, young and old. In
death as in life she had touched
many and made their lives that
much better. The generations of
families and friends greeted each
other with open arms and love.
They say that when the sand gets

between your toes that you never

truly leave the beach, and that
was certainly true of all the people standing out on 129th Street
on Labor Day. And it was true of
all the families that were on the
beach the day before and all summer long.
Sometimes its okay to romanticize the Rockaway experience,
because despite the tragedies that
have happened here, and maybe
even because of them, the generations have been bound together
by sand. And when sand is mixed
with the right elements, it seals. In
this case the element was love.

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel

By Peter J. Mahon

Its Not Easy Being Green

Do you have any old electronic
equipment lying around that you are
looking to get rid of? A word to the wise
as of January 1st this year, it is illegal to include electronic e-waste with
normal trash and recycling curbside
disposal. If you are caught doing so
you are facing a $100 fine for each violation. That being said, while the city
no longer provides curbside pick-up
of e-waste, there are some 90 locations
throughout the city, including Best
Buy and Staples stores and the Salvation Army that will accept discarded
electronics. The nearest e-waste collection center to our area is the Staples
located over at the mall just off the Belt

Parkway Erskine Street exit.

Of course it is up to you to transport
your e-waste to one of these authorized disposal centers, either by car or
public transportation, but make sure
to call ahead to the collection center
because not all disposal sites accept
every brand of e-waste. To avoid the
hassle, anyone out there with any
electronic waste they are looking to
get rid of should be aware that there
will be a free e-waste recycling
event sponsored by Senator Joe Addabbo and the Lower East Side Ecology Center this Saturday, September
12 in the St. Camillus Parking Lot in
Rockaway, rain or shine, between the

hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Now if you will excuse me, I have to
go dig through my clutter to find my
Commodore 64 computer and Radio
Shack TRS-80 Color Computer (affectionately nicknamed CoCo), both of
which I should have thrown out when
they stopped working a couple of decades ago, in order to arrange for their
transport to St. Camillus this weekend.
Due diligence requires that, in closing,
I also add that if inclement weather intervenes or my EZ Pass goes missing, I
may cross over to the dark side and
simply take a hammer to the damn
things and throw the pieces in a thick
black plastic contractor bag along with
the used kitty litter.
God knows its not easy being green.
During a community memorial
service back on September 11, 2013,
the below words were spoken by Josette Correa-Tuchio on behalf of the
Broad Channel VFW. Josettes words
still ring true today as we approach
the 14th anniversary of that awful day
back in 2001.
For all Americans, for all time, the

The Rockaway Times

phrase 9/11 will evoke a special meaning, a memory of a moment in our
history when the world as we knew
it changed forever. It is fitting then
that every year on September 11th all
Americans join together to honor the
memory of the more than 3,000 people
who perished on that day, those who
subsequently died from related causes
and our military personnel overseas
fighting for our freedom today. It is
also fitting that we observe a moment
of silence as a tribute to those many
lives cut short, and as a symbol of the
empty places left behind in the hearts
and memories of those of us still living. Americans will be meeting like this
every September 11th, I am sure, to refresh our national memory of what we
learned that day in 2001 - not only that
we have enemies in this world who
want to destroy us but also that duty,
loyalty, self-sacrifice and love still have
meaning.
Broad Channel why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Renowned Chef Brings

Taste Of Italy To Rockaway

By Dylan Watton

Imagine a tight-knit, waterfront community with an emphasis on family, friends, fishing. Its a place where buildings
of years long past meet with
modern architecture, a place
that awakens during the summer months. It is located on a
peninsula and is smaller portion of a larger municipality.
This place is not
Rockawayit
is Mola di Bari,
a town on the
Adriatic Sea in
the southeast region of Apulia
in Italy, and it is
the hometown of
award-winning
Chef
Pasquale
Martinelli.
I grew up in
a kind of fairly
poor household,
Martinelli said,
now living in a
beautiful home in
Arverne, lined with art and artifacts collected from his travels
all around the world as a chef.
His experience with food began
basically from birth, as his parents were farmers. Everybody
made their own extra virgin olive oil, everybody made their
own vegetables, he explained.
Theres one dish that always
reminds me of home called
san giuannid, made of the first
day of tomato season, the Day
of St. John [ June 24 in Italy].
The dish, translated to Little
St. John in English, is generally
made with pasta, fresh tomatoes, and olive oil, and other
vegetables such as mushrooms
and greensa prime example
of the homey and organic ingredients the chef prefers in
his cooking.
Inspired by this homegrown
style of cooking and driven by
the goal of purchasing a house
for his parents, Martinelli began cooking professionally on
May 1, 1990 at the Palace Hotel
in Bari, the larger city of which
Mola is part. From there I
worked for Princess Cruises,
which was my first real job,
he said. I then went to Milan
and then the U.K., when I had
the chance to cook for Queen
Elizabeth and Prince Charles
at the Compleat Angler Hotel.
At 24 years old, in 2000 Martinelli made a bold leap and
decided to move to New York
illegally. I lived in basements
in Brooklyn for five years, al-

ways using fake names and

fake IDs, he said. While working in many luxury hotels and
restaurants, Maritnelli learned
more and more about the industry, and in 2005 he married his wife and became an
American citizen. From there,
Martinellis career exploded.
Following his preparation of a
dinner for a charity called Alexandras Playground, a nonprofit
which
builds
playgrounds in lowincome
communities,
the
famous reporter
Geraldo Rivera
won an auction
to have Chef
Martinelli cook
at his home. The
chef has since
cooked for luminaries such as
Paul McCartney,
Martin Scorsese,
Michael Bloomberg, Liza Minelli, and has even appeared
on Martha Stewarts show.
In 2009, Martinelli founded
WarmPalate, his private chef
service company. My style of
cooking is a mission for me,
he said. In the month of August my parents would cut
open tomatoes they grew on
a wood board and dry them in
the sun for one month, then
preserve then in glass vases
with raw garlic, olive oil, and
fresh mint leaves. That would
become our snack for the winter. For $10, we could have
food for every night in the
winter by cooking like this. Its
such a healthy way to eat, too.
This is the cuisine I am trying
to preserve.
In 2012, Martinelli and his
family moved to Rockaway.
My hometown is right on the
Adriatic Coast, he said. The
sea is almost like a friend of
mine. I missed my relationship with water when I lived
in Brooklyn. He said that he
would love to cook more in
Rockaway. People may see
me as the guy whos cooked
for a lot of celebrities but I
want people to know that my
food is not too expensive,
very healthy, and completely custom. There are no set
menus. You tell me what food
or style interesting in having
and Ill guide you.

Trust me, I love the flattering
articles of today; its like free advertisement. These articles bring
the crowds of today who are here
because they want to be on great
beaches, not just here to escape
the heat.
I have to laugh at the impression given about the Rockaway of
today and Rockaway of 1977 when
the Ramones released the great
Rockaway Anthem, Rockaway
Beach.
Chewin at a rhythm on my bubble
gum
The sun is out, I want some

Down in the playground the hot

Bus ride is too slow
They blast out the disco on the radio

we all got some just as its always

BISHOP
KEARNEY

Im sure each and everyone of

us have heard from at least one
friend or family member that this
has been by far the best summer
ever. I know I have heard it all
summer long and have to agree, I
dont recall there being a summer
like this along the Rockaway peninsula! Sure, sometimes life gets
in the way to have us notice, but
there really wasnt one really bad
weekend.
Weekends on the Rockaway
peninsula are the reason many of
us are here from Far Rock to Breezy
and why hundreds of thousands of
people flock here each weekend.
For those of us who have been
here for more than 10 years or even
50 know this has in fact always
been the case. Its kind of odd for
me to read some of the very flattering articles in the New York Times
and many online newspapers the
past few years when they cover
Rockaway Beach.
If someone who had never heard
of Rockaway Beach read these articles they would get the impression
that a couple of explorers jumped
in a kayak on the shores of Williamsburg, Brooklyn and paddled
south for about to 15 miles or so
and discovered the barren wasteland of the Rockaway peninsula.
So many of the articles even give
the impression that great swimming, great surfing, great food and
good times are something new

Editorial
Remembering
Words of condolences will always be inadequate to families
who lost loved ones on 9/11. For
much of the country, 9/11 is a date
in the history books. Young people
turning voting age might not remember it at all. It doesnt have
the emotional resonance that is
does in Rockaway.
As we did last year, wed like to
thank those who organize tributes
and events for those killed on 9/11.
While moving on seems to be
wired into human DNA, its a good
thing that for some, never forget
is more than a bumper sticker.
September 11th is a sad, somber day for many yet tributes and
charities, established because

of that horrific day in 2001, are

healthy reminders to honor life
and embrace the notion of community.
Grieving, mourning, and remembering are essentially personal, varying from one person to
the next. But we need communities. We draw on the good and
strengths of each other. Tributes
and special events to mark this day
speak to our humanity, how were
all in this together.
Death, of course, is something
we all share. The tragic untimely
death of thousands, senseless as it
was, should remind us to live honorably and fully. We thank those
who help us remember.

sheet-rock, cesspools, windows,

and all my new siding, gutters,
leaders, and capping. In addition,
when BIB finally finishes helping me, I will have to spend tens
of thousands of dollars to restore
just some of the depreciation and
damage that they will have caused;
other values will be economically
irreplaceable.
FEMAs Region III Elevation
guidelines (Re. 8/09, Sec. A1) very
first sentence states, The proposed method/technique for elevating a structure must be the lowest cost alternative within a range
of elevation options. The document fully intends there be Benefit
/Cost considerations. Spending
$350,000 to elevate my house violates the very spirit of that document, or any other taxpayer document.
The fact of the matter is that
people have privately and legally
raised their homes, since SANDY,
with enclosed foundations, without sprinklers, without escape
windows, without new septic systems, without metal stairs, without
planters, and without having to vacate their homes for 9 months.
The entire purpose of this BIB
program was to help people raise
their homes. I understand the benefits of sprinkler systems, escape
windows, and the need for building codes. However, I also know,
with even more importance, that
there are exemptions, variances,
exceptions and grandfather
clauses to every code. We just need

Dear Editor:
Super Storm Sandy victims are
being re-victimized by the NYC
Build-It-Back
(BIB) Program.
This is the story of a well-meaning
agency that is totally out of control
and squandering tens of millions
of taxpayer dollars, unnecessarily.
Under the misguided pretense of
assistance, its mandates are treating many of its potential recipients
as idiots, children, and take it or
leave it beggars.
Three years subsequent to
SANDY, and having been previously evacuated for six months, I
am writing this letter to express the
total disgust I have with the pending actions of the program. I have
spent almost $200,000 dollars to
repair my house, including more
than $100,000 on new sheathing,
insulation, siding, gutters, leaders, capping and decking. Repairs
were 95+% complete a year ago,
and the remainder purposefully
delayed until completion of the
house being raised by BIB. Raising the house four feet is necessary
to conform to the recommended
FEMA flood guidelines.
Now, BIB has approved plans to
spend $350,000.00 of taxpayer dollars, on my house alone. Incredibly,
BIB is dictating mandatory and
unwanted requirements including
ripping out my entire poured concrete foundation, decking, twostory brick chimney, two (2) interior brick fireplaces, new interior

It is unconceivable that someone cannot precipitate the necessary variances and grandfathering for certain hurricane Sandy
victims whose homes are already
renovated.
Governor Cuomos NY Rising
Plan is proposing tens of millions
of dollars, part of which is to help
people raise their house. What is
the point if we have to go down
this, obstacle ridden, ridiculous
path lead by BIB? Both as a recipient and as a taxpayer I am outraged. The results of this program
are crystal clear. While taxpayer
dollars are being squandered, we
have no say. Take or leave it!

Banned Books Week

Dear Editor:
Freedom of speech is something close to my heart and judging by the number of American
flags in the neighborhood, I am
presuming that I am not alone.
This is why I want to share my concern. Hundreds of books are currently banned or challenged each
year from libraries and schools in
the United States. The reasons for
banning are generally personal
- religious beliefs, language, violence or inappropriate due to the
age of the reader. These are all acceptable reasons for not reading a
book. However, I dont believe others have the right to dictate what
anyone else cannot or should not
read.
The last week of September each
year, the American Library Association (www.ala.org) celebrates
Banned Books Week. This year it is
from Sept 27 thru Oct 3. I extend
an invitation to your readers to celebrate freedom and read a banned
or challenged book. Classic novels such as To Kill a Mockingbird,
Catcher in the Rye, and The Color
Purple have been on the top 10 list

of banned books sometime during

the last five years. Childrens series
that have been praised for getting
kids to read again, have also been
on this list - Harry Potter, Twilight
and the Hunger Games (not to
mention Captain Underpants).
Visit the library or bookstore.
Download an e-book. Enjoy the
ability to read what you want to
read. Its a quiet, cerebral celebration. Thank you.

MTA
Needs To Explain
Dear Editor:
I read with great interest the
MTA response to Rick Horans
questions regarding what the MTA
is doing to imrove transportation to the Rockaways. The most
revealing statement was that the
MTAs Press Office is limited to saying what the MTA is doing or not
doing not necessarily why. Why
wont the MTA explain its reasons?
Dont they have a responsibility to
do so?
Second, in their response to the
question about on-time performance, there is not a single word
about bus on-time performance
which is miserable. On Labor Day, I
took the Q35 from Brooklyn to Riis
Park and can tell you some riders
waited from 60 to 90 minutes for
a bus if they did not board at the
first stop in Brooklyn at Riis Park or
along Beach Channel Drive. There
were regular 30 minute waits and
if one or two buses bypassed your
stop you were stuck. The service
planning guidelines, which the
MTA uses to justify cuts in service, calls for seated loads during
non-rush hours. When was the last
time they monitored Q35 weekend
summer service?
The MTA makes statements
without documentation such as
the B44 SBS speeded up travel
time for buses and cars. In their
2013 Looking Ahead report, they
promised to investigate reactivating unused rail right-of-ways. Yet
they have not applied for state
funding to investigate that and
stated they have not taken a position on Queens Rail. Yes, the MTA
indeed needs to explain its actions
and lack of action.

The Benefits of
Massage Therapy
By Catherine Yeager
Massage and therapeutic touch
were used by the earliest practitioners
of Western medicine. Both are described in the journals of Hippocrates.
Many people consider massage a direct precursor to chiropractic, physical
therapy, and orthopedics. Despite the
popular view of massage as a luxury
item, massage therapy provides a
comprehensive preventative and interventive health care regime that delivers measurable results.
Massage therapy is inherently holistic in that it addresses the mind-body
connection
directly.
For example, it recognizes that emotions
take root within our
muscles and add stress
to muscle tissue. These
stored emotions, like
repetitive motion, and
other sources of stress,
can cause hyper-tense
muscle groups, misalignment of bones,
compression of connective tissue, nerve
compression, cellular
waste build-up, and in
extreme situations, disease states.
The most logical way to avoid these
and other unhealthy cycles is to call on
preventative methodologies. And there
are plenty available, i.e. meditation,
diet management, yogic practices, homeopathy, cleanses, chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage therapy practiced by a skilled, licensed therapist.
Increasingly, massage school curricula combine Western and Eastern
traditions.
From the Western perspective, we
focus on myology (the study of muscles), anatomy and physiology. In particular, we utilize our knowledge of
muscle insertion and origin to affect
muscle release, promote circulation,
improve organ function, and reduce
the risk of disease.
Massage also breaks apart adhesions (muscle knots) caused by
muscle fibers sticking together. Adhesions can impede the movement of

blood, lymph, and nutritional fluids.

When this occurs, lactic acid builds
up in muscles causing aches, pains,
and even nerve impingement. When
this goes untreated, the body tends to
compensate by moving other muscle
groups out of alignment. Pain then
spreads, causing additional discomfort
and dysfunction.
From the Eastern tradition, we incorporate the five-element theory holding that 1. Energy meridians course
through the body and 2. Along these
pathways energy pools (or tsubos) are
linked to specific organs, emotions,
body parts even seasons, and stages of
life. Shiatsu and related
approaches apply acupressure, compression
and body mobilization
along these meridian
pathways to relax muscles, strengthen organ
function, and encourage emotional release.
Yes, massage therapy
does feel luxurious and
is profoundly relaxing.
But more important, it
combines holistic, Eastern, and Western traditions to awaken the
parasympathetic nervous system by moving minds and bodies out the flight
or fight mode provoked by daily life.
This allows mental and physical relaxation that changes long-held muscular
patterns and improves orthopedic balance. When scheduled regularly, massage therapy, like other preventative
medicines, can initiate and maintain
significant transformations in body,
mind, and spirit.
Catherine Yeager is a graduate of the
Swedish Institute of Health Services,
holding a degree in Occupational Sciences. She is trained and licensed in Swedish,
Shiatsu, Reflexology, Manual Lymphatic
Drainage, Reiki, Oncology Massage, Medical Massage, Craniosacral Therapy and
Therapeutic uses of Essential Oils. She
blends these modalities to address the individual clients particular combination

Sunday Music Series Says Goodbye To Summer

By Dylan Watton
As he took to the stage on
the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend, John Simonelli had a melancholy message for his gathered audience. It looks like its
the end of summer, he said.
Thats a bummer. With that
he made a forceful left-handed
strum of his guitar and launched
into a song. As the organizer for
the Rockaway Artists Alliances
Sunday Night Music Series, he
decided to showcase his own exceptional music talents the same
way many others have over the
course of the year.
Many years ago I had heard
music coming from Fort Tilden
because I lived right across the
street in Roxbury, Simonelli,
clad in bright-green tye-dye,
red shorts, and flip-flops, said
outside the performance area,
RAAs Studio 7. Tommy
Burke ran open mics here every Thursday for 12 years. I decided to come over and check
it out. Simonelli said he has

been playing guitar since he

was in first grade and began
writing songs when he was 20.
His influences include Warren
Zevon, The Pogues and Joni
Mitchell, and seeing him live
evokes a sense of other 1970s
singer/songwriters such as
Bruce Springsteen and a more
emphatic James Taylor.
Since that fateful meeting 12

years ago Simonelli has become

an integral part of the RAA. I
became a board member over the
years and Ive been inspired, he
said. Not only to keep playing
music but to participate in volunteer efforts like gardening
and building structures. Since
he took over the music series
and moved it to Sunday nights, a
wide variety of musicians have

come to perform. Any kind of

artist can play here, Simonelli
said. We do not discriminate.
Simonellis set consisted of
original songs accompanied by
his booming voice. For one song
he brought a friend in an Elvis
shirt on stage to sing a duet.
Following Simonelli were the
Archangels featuring Rick Eckerle, Ron Bongo, and R.W. Allen. The guitarist, percussionist,
and bassist performed original
music and two covers, including
an outstanding stripped-down
rendition of the Bee Gees classic
To Love Somebody. Closing
out the evening was local outfit
Slope 343, featuring Frank Robbins, Michael Kramer, Frank
Sceri, and the enigmatically
named Johnny Nowhere.
The RAAs Sunday Music
Series runs from mid-April to
around the beginning of December, according to Simonelli. If
you are interested in performing, contact the RAA through
their website.

The Art Deco bathhouse at Riis Park

has towered over the beach for 83
years, but its never looked this good.
Following years of boarded up windows brought on by age and Hurricane Sandy, the building continued to
look magnificent from afar but drab
up close. So as the rest of Riis Park got
a huge makeover thanks to things such
as the Beach Bazaar, Giovanna Maselli
had found sudden inspiration.
I was walking by the bathhouse and
I saw these big boards with nothing on
them, she said. It was just automatic.
As the founder of Rockaway Summer
magazine and the pop-up shop Rockaway Summer HIVE (located at the bazaar), Maselli had spent her summer
surrounded by local artists and Rockaways beautiful and varied scenery. The
emptiness of the plywood struck her
something could most certainly be put
in its place. Thus Rockaway Summers
Issue 3D was born. I dont know how
my mind works but it was pretty instant, she said. The boards had no
function so why not put art on them? I
brought it to the Parks Department and
they were very receptive to the idea.
Maselli and her colleagues spent
Labor Day weekend decorating the
boards with photographs documenting the entirety of Rockaway. Using a
DIY adhesive of flour and water, the
pictures should stay up on the bathhouse as long the elements allow them
to. One of the pictures features an evening photo of the tall apartment buildings as the eastern end of the peninsula as shot by Greer Muldowney, a
renowned architectural photographer.
Another was a close-up of watermelon
rinds from Edgemere Farms, bringing
a primal, earthy feel to the exhibit. Yet
another, situated just to the right of the
composted watermelon, is of ambiguous machinery at Madelines Chocolate Factory.
While most of the posters being
hung up are printed photographs
there were two notable exceptions.
One was provided by local artist Tracey

Greene, a 24-year-old Rockaway native who has been painting since her
days at Bishop Kearney High School.
In a change of pace from the photos,
Greene live-painted one of the boards
with assistance from two of her friends,
Tori Dresch and Kaitlin McVeigh. The
painting was based on a sketch Greene
had done earlier of seagulls perched
atop the bathhouse.
I was originally planning to project the sketch I did on the board and
trace over that but the projector didnt
work this morning, Greene explained.
Ive ended up free-handing it instead,
even though its come out totally different than the sketch now. Since her
brother had just moved into a new
place, Greene utilized his buckets upon
buckets of leftover house paint, finding that it suited her needs perfectly. I
didnt even know what exactly the colors looked like until I opened them this
morning, Greene said. In college [the
Fashion Institute of Technology] I did a
lot of large-scale paintings so I got used
to the way they lay flat. Ive acclimated
to using house paint rather than more
expensive acrylic paints because of
that.
Dresch and McVeigh mostly focused
on the coloring of the sketch while leaving the finer detailsthe birds beaks,
for exampleto Greene. Both commented positively on the meditative
nature of painting, a sentiment echoed
by Greene. There are some paintings
where youre stressed about how they
will turn out, she said. But this one is
just so relaxed. Im just painting it for a
boardwalk full of people.
While Greene provided the live art,
there was one more board that needed
to be filled. This one, however, will be
filled by a lucky but talented member of
the public. By using the hashtag #rockawaysummer and tagging @rockawaysummer on Instagram, photos taken
in Rockaway will have a chance to be
featured as the final poster to grace the
bathhouse walls. After tagging, it is requested that all go to www.gofundme.
com/rockawaysummer to help fund
both a physical issue of Rockaway
Summer as well as the opportunity to
paint the dilapidated Riis Park handball
courts. And who knows? Maybe your
photo will last for another 83 years.

HOST YOUR
NEXT PARTY

Hotel Impossible Host to

Grill CROM Owner
CROM owner and professional
Muay Thai fighter Christopher Romulo is about to be in the hot seat.
Hell be the subject of a Q&A session hosted by star of the Travel
Channel show Hotel Impossible,
Anthony Melchiorri.
Romulo wont have any chance
to prepare and has no idea what
questions will be asked. The presentation promises to be no fluff
and all heart; full of motivation,
failure, success and beyond as Anthony Melchiorri interviews his
close friend and trusted trainer.
The event will take place at 8
p.m. on Thursday, September 17
at CROM Physical Culture (217
Beach 92nd Street). If interested in
attending, RVSP by emailing info@
crompc.com.
Romulo, the owner and head
coach at CROM, serves as a mentor to kids in the community and
an ambassador for the sport of
Muay Thai. Romulo has grown his
membership from 60 before Sandy to now 250 in just the past six
months.
Early in his fight career Romulo racked up an impressive
Muay Thai amateur record of 183-1(7). During that time, he won
the World Kickboxing Association
National Tournament two years
in a row, earned a WKA state super middleweight title, and a WKA
North American title. At age 33,
he turned proa decision fueled
in part by his performance at the
2004 IFMA tournament in Bangkok, where the United States had
an official team for the first time.
He brought home a bronze medal,
and in 2006, finally made the jump
to professional fighting. But all
things come to an end, and after
an illustrious career in the sport, in
2011 Romulo made the decision to
retire from fighting. His departure

from the ring followed 16 years of

competing and an impressive pro
record of 13-3 (10), with a Professional North American Super Middleweight title.
As a fighter, Romulo is most
known for is his iron spirit and
ability to come back from behind
in the fight, but this never rang
more true than when he and his
family were stripped of their home
and gym business due to Hurricane Sandy.
My motto is All It Takes Is
HeartIn this world everybodys
got a story, Romulo says. What
people are learning here can help
them with their story. We want
CROM to be the best facility on
the peninsula, offering all kinds
of outlets for everybody and anybody. A place where people arent
just working out to get in shape,
but because they love the way of
life.
One of the people that fell in
love with the CROM way of life is
Melchiorri. He brings over 20 years
of hospitality industry expertise to
the Travel Channel as the host of
Hotel Impossible and Five Star
Secrets. In Hotel Impossible, he
is the hotel fixer helping to turn
the business of a hotel not living
up to its potential or struggling to
survive. He assesses each property
and works closely with the owners
and staff to determine its biggest
problems. Melchiorri then formulates a plan, revamps the hotel and
re-motivates its staff to save these
properties from going under. Anthony, being a super dedicated
family man, exudes heart and
community in all he does on and
off the camera.
I train with Chris because I am
results driven and CROM gets results and makes it enjoyable, Melchiorri said.

Diary Of A Fat Man: Snacks Are Part of the Plan

I guess a couple of weeks ago I
made an error in judgment when
I warned you about feeding your
kids too much or they would end
up working for someone like Kevin
Boyle. Well, my column went AWOL
last week. Ya think Kevin was behind
that? Could be!!!
If you really want to read last
weeks column, its on The Rockaway
Times web site or on the RT Facebook
page or on my tumblr blog (with all
previous columns) at: myfatmandiary.tumblr.com.
Here are some snacks that I have
incorporated in my everyday living.
We all need some and these are the
good ones:
Apples. Apples are a good carb,
and theyre packed with fiber. Eating two apples is enough to fill your
fruit intake for the day, and youre
not adding a lot of calories. Apples
also have vitamin C, and satisfy your
sweet tooth. They make your stomach feel fuller, so youll eat less during the day, without having to worry
about working off a lot of fat.
Yogurt. Low-fat plain yogurt has
many benefits. Its probiotic, which
means that its filled with good bacteria, also known as live cultures
that can help relieve digestive problems. Yogurt is also a high-protein,
low-fat food, perfect for maintaining
a healthy diet. In addition, yogurt is
low in calories, but be careful about
the sugar content of some flavored
yogurts. Youre better off buying nonsweet yogurt and using honey or
brown sugar to make it sweet
Tuna. Tuna is packed with vitamin B3, vitamin B12 and protein. Its
a lean, delicious food that is also low
in fat. Tuna is loaded with omega-3
fatty acids that have huge antioxidant benefits. The best kind of tuna
is albacore tuna, which is pure white
tuna with no mixture of other tuna
species. For snacking, you can eat
tuna straight out of a can, mix with
brown rice or sprinkle over a healthy

salad.
Edamame. Edamame is a fancy
name for soybeans that are boiled.
They are a delicious, low-fat and lowcalorie snack thats full of protein and
fiber. Youll also find vitamin C and
vitamin A and iron. You can pack
edamame in a bag to down them by
the handful. They are great salted!!
Cottage Cheese. By now you know
this has become my go to food.
Although, you dont want cottage
cheese thighs when you work out,
you do want to eat cottage cheese
to stay healthy. Its high in protein,
calcium (for bone strength), magnesium, potassium and zinc. Cottage
cheese is also a low-carb food that
helps regulate blood sugar, improves
digestion and is rich in antioxidants.
You can eat cottage cheese by itself
as a snack, or add it to a salad or eggwhite omelet.
Blueberries. Blueberries are a
superfood that you can enjoy anytime. They are one of the highest
antioxidant-containing fruits in the
world, and you can eat them raw, in
smoothies or in yogurt. Studies have
shown that eating blueberries after
a workout can help your muscles
recover much quicker because antioxidants help promote healing. Blueberries are also packed with vitamin
K, vitamin C and fiber.
Cheese. Another of my top line
snacks. Studies have shown cheese
contains butyric acid. This compound is linked to reduced obesity,
reduced hunger and higher metabolism. It is shown that consuming natural cheese with whole-grain bread
has boosted metabolism nearly 50
percent more than processed cheese
and white bread.
All of the above snacks have one
thing in common. They make your
metabolism move in high gear.
Metabolism is the process by
which your body converts what you
eat and drink into energy. During
this complex biochemical process,

Facts You Probably Dont Need

calories in food and beverages are

combined with oxygen to release the
energy your body needs to function.
Which brings me to the question
and contest that was in last weeks
column. For those of you who didnt
see it on the web... here it is again:
Do you know what happens to
all the weight people lose? WHERE
DOES IT GO? Never thought of that
huh? Its not what you think!
Send me your guesses to bbernfeld@gmail.com and the first correct
answer wins a prize. (Just kidding,
no prize) but Ill try and work your
name into a future column... maybe.

Kingsborough Community College

The Rockaway Times

A VALUABLE RESOURCE
By Dr. Geraldine Chapey

Kingsborough Community College serves the varied interests of

the community. It accommodates
those who are looking to enrich their
lives and those who are entering or
returning to the workforce. Kingsborough allows students to achieve
their aspirations and excel.
Kingsborough fully recognizes
the needs of different age levels: (1)
My Turn program for NYS residents
age 60 and over, (2) 50 Plus Wellness Program, (3) College for Kids
ages five through 13, (4) Continuing
Education for adults age 18 years old
and over, and (5) Regular College
Courses, of course.
(1)The My Turn Program is a tuition free College education program. The program is available to
all New York State residents who
are 60 years or older. There are no
previous educational requirements.
There are no special courses for My
Turn students. They are integrated
into the regular student body. When
designated requirements such as
term papers, tests and short essays
are completed, the My Turn students receive college credit. The My
Turn students may take as many
credits as they choose during the semester.
The My Turn students can use all
of the facilities: gym, library, bookstore, cafeteria, learning center, pool
and beach. The favorite courses

are: Art, Literature, English, Chorus,

Speech, Political Science, Swimming, Tai Chi, Ceramics and Photoshop.
There are two mentoring programs available to the My Turn students. (1) The Talking Buddies. My
Turn students are paired with an ESL
student for one hour a week during
which they practice English. (2) The
Board of Education Program. It has
a special program where a group of
seniors meet with special needs students once a week to practice basic
English and Math.
The My Turn program implements a thorough and comprehensive approach to expanding
the horizons of seniors. It has been
recognized by the American Society
on Aging with the prestigious 2006
Mind Alert Award.
Individuals have also excelled.
One senior began his college career
when he was 65. He completed his
PhD. Degree in History from the City
University of New York Graduate
Center. There are many other success stories.
The fees for the My Turn students
are as follows: (A) $80 for the Fall/
Winter and (B) $80 for the Spring/
Summer.
(2) The 50 Plus Wellness program focuses on mental and physical health
and wellness. The courses include:
Aquatics (pool), Computer Courses,
Yoga and Palates, Dancing Fitness,

Meditation, Diet Groups and iPod

Basics.
This program focuses on achieving
the skills needed for personal enrichment and for living a healthier
lifestyle. Most of the courses run for
10 weeks and cost $100. Free parking is available on class days. Call
Susan Lavin at 718-368-5079 for
more information or to register.
(3). College for Kids ages five
through 13. This gives children the
opportunity to achieve increased
skills in a variety of fields. The
five and six-year-olds are guided
through developmental and age appropriate activities to have fun and
to learn. The courses for the seven
to 13 year olds include: Art, Architecture, Design, Basketball, Baking,
Chemistry, Computers, Football,
Journalism, Piano, Soccer and Tennis.
Family classes permit children
and adults to work together. This
Fall semester, Kingsborough Community College is offering Gardening with Kids on Saturday from 10 to
12.
Fees for the Fall semester are: mornings only, Saturday or Sunday, $90.00
for a day from 9:45 am to 12 noon;
full day fees are $245 from 9:00 am to
3:15 pm and includes lunch. Phone
registration can be made by calling
718-368-5050.
(4) The Continuing Education
program sponsors courses for per-

sonal enrichment and academic

certification for everyone 18 years
or older. One area where Kingsborough is very successful is the GED
or General Equivalency Diploma
Courses for those who want to earn
a high school diploma. More students from the Kingsborough Community College program pass the
GED test than from any other school
in the city. Today one in seven high
school diplomas are the GED.
Continuing Education also offers:
Culinary Arts, (gluten free cooking
at home), Seasonal Urban Farming,
Computers, Language: Conversational Spanish, Conversational Russian, Conversational Italian, Music
(beginning piano), Writing, Child
Abuse and Domestic Violence/
Awareness Counseling, Accounting Certificate, Event and Meeting
Planning Certificate, Veterinary Assistance Certificate and Emergency
and Medical Services Certificate.
Call 718-368-5050 for further information.
The following facts are very interesting. The average age of a CUNY
student today is 44. Women make
up 60 percent of the student body.
These programs give individuals
the opportunity to broaden their
horizons.
Information for this article was
obtained from the KCC web site and
from the Continuing Education Fall
2015 brochure.

The Shore Garden Club

Weeds

By Robin Shapiro

Sometimes I wish I didnt have

a full time job- taking care of
three gardens could qualify me as
a full time gardener! This year has
been the worst -maybe as a result
of Sandy, it seems the weeds pop
up quicker and bigger than ever.
Sometimes its a challenge to

determine if its really a weed.

Many weeds mock perennialsIm sure Ive pulled out what
could morph into gorgeous flowers in my zest to keep my garden
clear of these dreadful weeds.
They can take over if youre not
diligent!

IBS A Common Disorder

Irritable Bowel Syndrome
(IBS) is the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder affecting between seven to
21 percent of the population. It
is a symptom-based condition
defined by abdominal pain or
discomfort, with altered bowel
habits, in the absence of any
other disease that would cause
the symptoms. In the US, women are diagnosed with IBS oneand-a-half to two times more
commonly than men. IBS with
constipation (IBS-C) is more
common in women whereas IBS
with diarrhea (IBS-D) is more
common in men.
Typical symptoms include
loose/frequent stools possibly
with diarrhea, or constipation,
bloating, and abdominal cramping/discomfort/pain. Symptoms
may be brought on by food intake or sensitivity to certain
foods and symptom patterns
often change over time (change
in pain location, change in stool
pattern). Psychosocial factors
(i.e. job or home stress) may
predispose the development of
IBS, especially in women. Other
gastrointestinal symptoms not
associated with IBS that may be
warning signs of organic disease
include symptom onset after age
50, severe or progressively worsening symptoms, unexplained
weight loss, nocturnal diarrhea,
rectal bleeding or tarry stools,
iron-deficiency anemia and a
family history of organic gastrointestinal disease like colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease
and celiac disease.
There is no one specific test
for the diagnosis of IBS. It can
be diagnosed by symptoms
alone, however most practitioners consider it a diagnosis of

exclusion meaning they prefer

to do tests to rule out organic
disease first. Some medications
can exacerbate IBS symptoms.
For example OTC products like
antihistamines, calcium, iron,
magnesium, NSAIDs (Advil, Alleve etc.) and wheat bran. Some
prescription meds can also
worsen symptoms these include antibiotics, antidepressants, antiparkinsonian meds,
antipsychotics, calcium-channel blockers, diuretics, Metformin and opiods.
Once a diagnosis of IBS has
been established there are some
ways to improve symptoms.
About 90 percent of those with
IBS learn to restrict their diet
to improve symptoms. There is
emerging evidence that a glutenfree diet is helpful. In addition
foods that contain short-chain
carbohydrates should be avoided
foods such as wheat, onions,
some fruits and vegetables, sorbitol and some dairy products.
Also, some OTC products may
help symptoms. These include
fiber like psyllium (best for IBSC), laxatives (IBS-C), loperamide
(IBS-D), probiotics and antispasmodics like peppermint oil.
Prescription meds include antidepressants, antispasmodics,
Linzess, Amitza, Lotronex and rifiximin (antibiotic). Psychologic
and behavioral therapy may offer
some help in certain patients.
See your doctor if you think
you may have IBS. You might
find the help you need.

Ideas for

Going from Point A

Growing up on the western end

of the Rockaway Peninsula during
the late fifties and early sixties was a
challenge especially for transportation. Only one school bus came into
the neighborhood to carry us to our
Elementary School on Beach 129th
Street. If you missed the bus you
were out of luck. Typically there was
only one vehicle and one driver to a
family. Our alternate forms of transportation were walking and bicycle
riding. On weekends, in my pre-teen
years I frequently visited my classmates by making a five mile solo
bike ride to Belle Harbor. In high
school I learned to hitchhike to the
Circle (when it was really a circle)
in order to catch the Q-35 to Kings
Highway and transfer to yet another
bus. Life in those days was challenging and yet simple. We never went
anywhere without carfare in our
pocket and we were always grateful to the people who would stop
to pick us up as we hitched our way
home.
After college, the Vietnam War
was raging. I became an Air Force
pilot and although I didnt fly any
combat missions I did see firsthand how aviation contributed
to air transportation. Later I went
to work for the United States Department of Transportation (DOT)
at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Each major agency
within the DOT represented a different mode of transportation. The
Department worked very hard to
get each agency to work with each
other so that we had a seamless
system of transportation which
was able to move people and goods
safely, quickly and efficiently from
point A to point B. By introducing
an Inter-Modal form of transportation a system of transportation
was developed that complemented each other mode. Transportation hubs began sprouting up that
allowed people and cargo to transfer from one mode to another,
whether it is planes, buses, trains,
ships or ferries.
I served in the FAA as an Air
Carrier Safety Inspector and found
myself in the Flight Deck of many
civilian air carriers. I traveled to
many places in the US, Europe and
Africa. I was very impressed with
the transportation systems in Europe and worked to improve some

of the systems within Africa. Major

cities in Europe had railroads or
subways directly to airport terminals. It was always a short trip from
the airport to a hotel in the heart of
the town.
On one occasion I worked directly with the Concorde fleets
from the United Kingdom and
France. Part of the project required
that I travel in the flight deck of the
Concorde on a Trans-Atlantic trip.
It was amazing to be at 60,000 feet
traveling at 23 miles per minute.
Sadly, when I arrived at JFK and
joined the traffic on the Van Wyck,
I traveled one mile in 23 minutes.
The Rockaways lie within the
shadow of one of the worlds greatest transportation hubs. Each day
hundreds of jumbo jets fly across
the Atlantic Air Bridge and take
the off ramp to JFK to deliver thousands of travelers to the Big Apple.
This off ramp goes right over the
Rockaways and these passengers
can see firsthand from their seats
the beauty of our beaches. Ironically we lack an intermodal system of transportation for both the
tourists and residents to use mass
transit to travel to and from New
York City from the Rockaways in
an efficient manner. We lack a direct rail line to the city, we fail to
take advantage of our waterways
and develop an efficient water
transportation system. We develop transportation plans that are
shortsighted that favor one mode
that creates problems for another
mode. Our transportation modes
should complement each other
and not compete with each other.
We create unnecessary barriers
like toll booths that shouldnt exist. We accept a bus system where
instead of creating a transportation hub we have bus terminals at
a variety of locations. It is too haphazard and lacks functionality. We
need a comprehensive transportation system for the Rockaways that
is a complement to each separate
mode and allows us all to go safely
from Point A to Point B.
(Martin J. Ingram is the CoChair Transportation Committee, Community Board #14 and
a member of the Queens Public
Transit Committee).

RWA: Fun
This year Rockaway Waterfront
Alliance hosted its 9th Annual
Earth Day celebration along with
related Living Classroom Workshops, done each year to encourage young people to get involved
in events that raise awareness and
appreciation of the environment.
Port Authority NY/NJ has supported these programs for the
past nine years and as a result
RWA had been able to expand
programs to working with more
than 15 local schools in the Rockaways; bringing more than 1500

local school children outdoors

along the shore to work directly
with scientists and professionals from Port Authority NY/NJ,
Queens Botanical Gardens, NYC
Soil and Water Conservation District and Riverhead Foundation.
The bulk of RWAs work encourages young people to look
outside their schools and consider fields of study in STEM related fields. Chris Zeppie who
recently retired from PANYNJ was
in charge of managing the environmental impact of the land

surrounding all 26 facilities managed by Port Authority. During his

tenure Chris supervised teams of
biologists and scientists in charge
of conservation efforts. PANYNJ
Biologist Laura Francoeur regularly came to speak to students in
the Rockaway schools about bird
strikes and efforts to protect the
wildlife on Jamaica Bay as well as
managing airways for passenger
safety.

AHOY
ROCKAWAY!
7ATER4EMPERATURE

&" TH3T
Hello anglers (and non-anglers),
the recent summer weather has had
some cool dry pleasant days, only
to be interrupted with some molten
hot humid ones. As summer quiets
down over the Rockaway peninsula,
many of us wish summer would last
just one more month. September is
the cooling off period (hopefully),
and the daylight hours are still long.
The best fishing is in the fall, so lets
get ready for some BIG blue fish
and BIG striped bass to be getting
very hungry soon. This is the time
of year that you want to get out your
surface popping plugs and swimming lures. Its usually around this
time of year that the larger game
fish will start to go into the bay, as
well as off the beaches in search of
food (usually corralling and cutting
off some bunker). Look for the birds
working on the surface and try and
cast your lure near that area.
Striped bass are migratory fish
that respond to changes in water
temperature. The species prefer

the water temperature to be between 55*-68*F. Keep in mind that

water temperatures dont occur on
the same dates every year. Bass will
migrate to those areas (in that temperature range) as the water cools
down or warms up. During the fall
run, older and larger striped bass
(30 or more) will migrate south for
the winter to the Virginia and North
Carolina coast. There are also locals and holdovers; smaller younger
striped bass called Schoolies are
too small to join the long migration south in the fall with the adult
striped bass. The smaller bass will
hang around the local bays and
beaches where they were born for
their first few years until they grow
large enough (over 30) to join the
winter migration south. These
smaller bass will begin feeding in
the spring when the water temperature gets above 45*F. In the spring,
the smaller bass will go into the
shallows of the back bay seeking the
warmer water temperatures, and
will even feed during daylight hours
and are fun to catch. Please release
these fish gently back into the wa-

ter as they are under-size and are

NOT legal to keep, but more importantly the striped bass will spawn
and make more striped bass in the
very near future. Conservation and
sportsmanship are nothing new to
the Rockaway and Broad Channel
angler, as a matter of fact it goes back
many generations, so lets pass it
on. Speaking of passing it on, September 12 is the 26th Annual North
Channel Yacht Clubs Fluke tournament. Sign up for the tournament
is on Thursday, September 10 (TODAY), cash prizes, barbecue and
more. There is a $40 entry fee per
adult, (children under 12) $10, for
more info, call NCYC at 718-3181312.
During the fall, the shallow water warms from the sunlight hitting the bottom of the dark mud
in the back bay. The warmed up
water will pour out into the cooler ocean with the outgoing tide.
This outflow of water brings with
it a lot of bait fish (such as peanut
bunker, spearing, etc.) washing
out near the cooler ocean waters
on the outside near the inlet.
Striped bass eager to fatten up for
the long migration trip south will
blitz these bait fish and eat as
many of them as fast as they can
(even during daylight hours). Be
alert for the birds diving and working on the baitfish near the surface
to be right over these blitzes. You
can often see these bass (and blue

fish) feeding frenzies just out of
reach of the frustrated surf fishermen casting plugs from the beach,
but when these surf casters hook
on the bass, its almost always a
large fish. We contacted our local
stations, and heres what they have
to report...
Big Rons Fishing Station in Howard Beach: We called and spoke
with Kim at Big Rons and she tells
us that the porgies are all over the
local bridges. Anglers are catching more and larger porgies than
last week. Anglers are buying both
clams and worms to produce results, but the bloodworms and the
sand worms seem to be a bit more
appealing to the porgies so far this
season. Fluke fishing is slow with
the warmer weather and water
temperatures, but we did have that
large 9.5 lb fluke caught near Big
Rons Station last week, so you never
can tell whats down there following
your rig.
Toms Wave service station Bait &
Tackle in Rockaway Park: We talked
with Tom and he tells us that over
the weekend the porgy fishing has
been very strong along the sea wall.
Most anglers are using worms. The
bridges (especially M.P.B.) were
very busy over the weekend as boats
tried to get as close as they could
to get to the porgy action. Its that
time of year, PORGY TIME! Well,
there you have it anglers, until next
week...

Last Stop Gourmet Shop

By Octavia Willis

Its a hidden gem! In plain sight!

The Last Stop Gourmet Shop is located on one of the busiest streets in
Rockaway, 116th Street, but somehow easy to overlook. The eatery
located at 222 Beach 116th Street
in Rockaway Park is open every day
from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. serving breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. Now
approaching its 10 year anniversary,
business partners, owners and chefs,
Carlos Lazo and Guadalupe Benitez,
couldnt be more excited to continue
to run a successful restaurant cooking delicious American food and
serving their customers in a friendly
welcoming environment.
The Last Stop Gourmet Shop was
bought by business partners Lazo
and Benitez from previous Last Stop
Gourmet Shop owners in 2006 and
kept the business name. At the last

stop on the Rockaway Park A train

look no further because the Last Stop
Gourmet Shop is next door. When
you walk in the restaurant you feel
such a comfortable and welcoming
vibe and you may say to yourself why
havent I come in here before? Although it might be new to you it will
familiar as well. You might see other
customers you know or are bound to
see again. You will truly see that you
have been missing out on this special
spot.
The restaurant has a laid back atmosphere with cool air conditioning,
music playing and television on. Its
comfortable but bustling, too. You
can sit at one of the tables or choose
to sit at the counter. If you choose
the counter you can see ahead that
the kitchen is wide open, on full display, so you will see every dish being
cooked in the kitchen which is a treat

in itself. No hidden secrets here!

Brandon Perkins is a Rockaway
resident and has been a customer of
Last Stop Gourmet Shop for the past
four years. I come here every week.
The staff is nice and the food is what I
like about this place, Perkins said.
Its loyal customers like him that
keep co-owner Lazo motivated. Lazo
is very passionate about cooking and
is always looking to improve his business. Working hard for the customers
is what pays off he says. Seeing the
smile on my customers faces and
making them happy is what I like to
do. Im thankful for loyal customers
and also to my new customers.
Rosemarie OConnor has been a
waitress at Last Stop Gourmet Shop
since she was 14 years old. They now
22-year-old says, I enjoy the customers and I love working here. Rachel
Blaney, a Rockaway resident of 30

years says, The atmosphere and

food here is good. Blaney says this as
she eats her delicious looking grilled
cheese with tomatoes. Blaneys friend,
Michelle Latoni, a Rockaway resident
of 41 years says You can meet the locals in here while adding her favorite
dish at the restaurant is the cheeseburger with onions topped with tomatoes, and cheese fries on the side.
After Last Stop Gourmet Shop
was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy
Carlos says it took four months to
rebuild the entire restaurant. Well, it
looks like the hard work has paid off.
The Last Stop is worth the trip.
If you would like more information about Last Stop Gourmet Shop,

Jet Ski Adventures: Coney Island

The Rockaway Times

By Katie McFadden

The sun was shining bright overhead as I glided over the water, water
spraying my face as I hit speeds up
to 40 mph, stopping to take in views
of the Wonder Wheel and Parachute
Jump at Coney Island and jumping
in for a dip in the Atlantic. I couldnt
think of a better way to spend Labor
Day than out on the water on a jet ski.
On Monday, September 7, my
friend, Delia and I, finally made
use of the Groupon deal we had for
Rockaway Jet Ski. We were originally
supposed to go flyboarding, a fun activity I had the opportunity to try last
summer, but due to high insurance
costs, Rockaway Jet Ski was unable
to operate it this year. But taking a
90-minute Jet Ski tour around Coney
Island was an amazing alternative.
We arrived at Thai Rock shortly
before our scheduled tour at 11 a.m.
and went straight to the back deck
and down the ramp to the Rockaway
Jet Ski office, where we were shown
an instructional safety video, before signing our lives away on a few
sheets of paper that we skimmed
through and agreed to a $500 credit
card hold in case we destroyed the
jet ski. Then we waited for the rest
of the members of our tour to arrive.
Once they did, we put on lifejackets,
were assigned jet skis (mine was red!)

and listened to a few last-minute tips

from our fabulous tour guide, or pack
leader, Glenn DiResto. Our group of
about eight posed for a selfie before
heading out on our adventure.
We boarded our jet skis while
Glenn and some of the other staffers gently pushed us out into the
bay. With a push of a green button,
we started our water bikes up and
met in the middle of the bay, before
the Cross Bay Bridge, making sure to
stay at least 100 feet apart from each
other. Giving a thumbs up indicating
we were ready, we gassed up the skis
and headed out into the wild, wild

Jamaica Bay, heading toward Coney

Island.
I have to admit, I was scared at
first. But this wasnt my first rodeo.
I had tried the half-hour rides with
Rockaway Jet Ski at least four times
before, but those rides are pretty limited to an area between the Cross Bay
Bridge and the A train bridge and I
always had someone with me, either
as a passenger or the driver. With
this tour, we were riding solo, right
through Jamaica Bay. It was a gorgeous day, so there were several fishing boats, sail boats and other watercrafts out with us, meaning plenty

of obstacles to avoid as I tried to get

used to driving one of these things
again. Glenn had advised us that the
best speed to go was about 35 mph,
for a smoother ride. Was he insane? I
got up to an average of about 20 mph
and got scared when I hit anything
above it. Needless to say, I was one of
the last ones in the group, as I tried
to follow the last spray of the next jet
ski, half a mile away in front of me,
while trying to wipe the water from
my sunglasses. We made about three
stops along the way to Coney Island
to regroup, which gave me a slight

art and educational group
Art Ventures won the Citizens Committee for NYC
2015 Neighborhood Grant
Award, allowing them
to create the Lavender
Studio and beautify the
Rockaway Artists Alliance
T7 Gallery with a lavender
garden and promote use
of the herb through art.
Grantee winners Mandy Francin and Elaine Rodriquez, plus many other
volunteers, have grown
the Lavender Studio into
a blooming success. They
have
helped
provide
plants to the Queens Nassau Health Center, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance,
Edgemere Flower farm
and other local businesses
and have inspired people
to create lavender paintings and other works of
art.
In mid-August, the Lavender Studio celebrated
its accomplishments with

a Lavender Social. Many

gathered and contributed
to the event in different
ways. Thomas Kerr and
Ellen Hoyt demonstrated
basic painting techniques
using lavender on site.
The talented gardener,
Maggie from Edgemere
Farm, demonstrated dyeing clothing with flowers.
Elaine Rodriquez baked
delicious lavender cookies. The event provided
complimentary art supplies,
fragrances
and
goodies for all. Different
generations spent the
day socializing, drinking
lavender lemonade, eating lavender cookies and
painting images of lavender.

Know somebody who wants to become

the next Michael Wilbon (or Kevin
Boyle)? The New York Sports Connection, an online resource for families and
youth sports organizations in the city,
is looking for aspiring sportswriters/reporters for their Junior Journalists program. Articles written by students will
be published on NewYorkSportsConnection.com, allowing novice reporters to write about what they love and
share whats happening in their own
sports community. Current and former
sports reporters will mentor and guide
students throughout the program. Seeing how Rockaway is bastion of youth
sports, this is a great opportunity for
young writers ages 13-17 to hone their
skills at sportswriting. Interested students need to register for the program
on New York Sports Connections website at https://www.newyorksportsconnection.com/junior-journalism-program/ and submit a short (50 words
or less) statement on why they want to
write about sports for New York Sports
Connection and why they believe they
would be good reporters. The essay
must be written in English. A parental
electronic signature will be required.
For more information, visit the website
or call 917-284-8523.

We have already received 3 calls from our

Schilling built his

Jet Ski Adventures: Coney Island

Continued from page 38

chance to catch up.

Once we got to Coney Island, I began to relax. I convinced myself that
if I were to fall off at some point, I was
landing in water, so I had nothing to
worry about. We took in the scenes
as thousands of people dotted the
Brooklyn beach, with the Cyclone
rolling and the Wonder Wheel turning in the background. Glenn took
a few photos of the group and explained a bit about Coney Island and
the sights we were seeing. Then we
gassed up again and headed further
out into the Atlantic, passing the tip
of Breezy Point. This is when I started
to get more into it and enjoy myself. I
started averaging 30 mph and found
myself laughing every time I jumped
a wave. We were advised not to wave
jump, so I had no intentions of do-

ing so, but once youre out on the

water, it becomes unavoidable. With
so many other boats creating wakes
and the breeze picking up every now
and then, the water can get pretty
choppy. I wanted my $500 security
deposit back at the end of the trip,
so I had no intentions of going wild,
but I couldnt help but smile when I
caught some air. And I was no longer
the last one in the group.
We rode out to a spot, where land
was no longer within a comfortable
swimming distance, and what did
we do? We swam. If you wanted to, of
course. Since Im really a mermaid,
I refer to swimming as mermaid
time and I wasnt going to pass up
a chance to take a dip in the middle
of the Atlantic. My friend, a few others in the group, and I all jumped in
and let our lifejackets do their job. It
was exhilarating to be out so far in
the water, not knowing how deep it
is to the bottom and just what might
be lurking beneath; maybe a humpback whale would make a splash or a
shark would flash its fin. None of that
happened, but it was fun to imagine.
We floated around for about 10 minutes before hauling ourselves back
on to the jet skis and taking off once
again, this time heading back toward
Jamaica Bay. Our tour was coming to
an end soon.
The last leg of the tour was when

it became really fun. I was no longer

tense and after about an hour of riding, I was completely comfortable on
the jet ski. Also, the water was much
calmer on the way back, so I took advantage of it, hitting speeds around
40 mph and standing up for much of
the ride back. I felt like a wave cowgirl, riding through the bay, reaching
high speeds, the wind blowing back
my soaking wet ponytail, making
little jumps here and there. I really
enjoyed those last moments, riding
under the Marine Parkway and Cross
Bay bridges, taking the time to get a
different view of the Rockaway peninsula, Brooklyn, Broad Channel and
the city skyline. As the tour came to
an end, I was craving more adventure, but our time was up. We met
back at Thai Rock and docked our jet
skis. It took me a few minutes to get

used to land again after spending so

long rocking along the waves. But as
I learned how to use my legs again, I
was able to reflect on how much fun
I just had. As our adrenaline came
down, my friend and I sat down at
Thai Rock for some lunch and relaxation. It was the perfect way to end
the holiday weekend.
If you havent tried jet skiing yet, I
highly recommend it. Its not too late
to take a tour of your own. Rockaway
Jet Ski offers 30 minute and hourlong rides, sunset tours, plus trips to
Coney Island and around Manhattan. If jet skis arent your speed, they
also offer paddleboard and kayak
rentals. Rockaway Jet Ski will be open
through September and maybe even
into mid-October. Check out www.
rockawayjetski.com for more info or
to book your trip.
