systematically analysing the same and Suggest measures to arrest the trend and reverse
it.

Two first degree gassy coal seams 1.2m & 1.0m thick dipping 1 in 30 separated by a sand
stone parting of 20m is proposed to be extracted in descending order by high wall
mining method by cutting a trench up to floor of lower seam at a depth of 80m. How
do you propose to prepare the trench for safe operation of high wall equipments?
Prepare a safe code of practice for such method of extraction.

Q1.

In the recent past, opening of a new coal mine is becoming difficult. What are the
impediments? Give your suggestions to improve upon the present system to fulfil the future
need of coal giving proper justification.

Q2.

Write short notes on:

a. Fault tree analysis,
b. Payback period and internal rate of return,
c. Behaviour based safety management.

Q3.

A 4.2 m thick coal seam is being depillared with SDLs for the first time in a bard and pillar
panel at a shallow depth of about 50 m with pillar size of 26 m x 26 m centre to centre and
gallery width of 4.2 m. The panel consists of 36 pillars and the incubation period was six
months. The average production from the panel was 150 T per shift. After about 5 1/2
months, blazing fire was noticed in the panel by a Mining Sirdar in night shift on a holiday
and thick smoke was also coming out through the evasee of main mechanical ventilator.
(a) On receiving information about fire, as manager of the mine, what immediate action will
you take?
(b) What steps will you take to deal with the fire?
(c) What are your plans to isolate the fire?
(d) What were the probable reasons for the fire?
(e) What are the remedial measures you suggest to prevent re-occurrence of fire in such
panels?

Q4.

A coal seam, 3 m thick dipping at 1 in 7 towards S 2315' E was being developed by bard and
pillar method at a depth of 250 m deploying LHDs directly loading on to belts. Pillars were
45 m x 45 m centre to centre developed along strike and dip, with galleries of 4.8 mx 3.0 m
cross section. The immediate roof is shaley sand stone having adjusted RMR as 32. Full
column resin grouted roof bolts of 1.8 m in length were being used to support the roof as
per the designed SSR, keeping factor of safety as 2. Deteriorations in roof were noticed e.g.,
crushing, bulging, deformation, etc., in bearing plate and also slipping of nuts of roof bolt
even after 5 m of progress in development gallery. After a scientific investigation it was
found that direction of horizontal stress was S 4325' E and is 1.86 times higher than vertical
stress. Suggest methods to improve the roof condition to continue development of the
seam in safe manner.

Q5.

What is technical and biological reclamation? What is the root causes of air- pollution due to
dust in an opencast mine? What precautions are to be taken to contain the air- pollution?

Q6.

What is Safety Management Plan? How will you prepare a safety management plan for a
big underground mine to mitigate dangers from accidents due to ground movement?
Critically analyse each element, prepare an organization chart and Standard Operating
Procedure to manage the above risk.

Q7.

What preparatory and precautionary measures need to be taken prior to introduction of

diesel operated equipment in underground coal mines in India? List the key parameters to
be monitored during operation of diesel equipment

Q8.

In order to augment coal product on in the country, it is necessary to introduce large-scale

mechanization. How will you assess the training needs for mine workers to meet this
challenge? Discuss adequacy of present statute in this regard.
