Landing a Muskie

Northern Wisconsin

The Ideal Vacation Land

Just a few hours easy travel from Chicago and Milwau

kee or St. Paul-Minneapolis, there is one of the greatest
vacation lands of America-indeed. of all the world.
It is the Country of Big Woods and Many Waters-in
Northern Wisconsin.
Its scenic charm, its many opportunities for different
forms of recreation, its quiet, its coolness, the genuine
hospitality of its people, and above all its easy accessi
bility, make this sylvan region the resort, the refuge, and
the playground for hundreds of thousands every year.

518,000 Acres of Lakes

Northern Wisconsin has room for them all, fishermen,
campers, cottagers, hotel guests. You could lose the entire
area of a New England state or two in its cool pine forests.
There are no less than 518,000 acres of lakes--so many in
dividual patches of silvery, crystal waters that it probably
would take an astronomer to count them all. Besides,
there are rivers and streams innumerable.

An Ideal Retreat

Roughing It

No true fisherman need come back empty handed from

the fishing trip in these waters. This is the real habitat
of those fighting game fish, the tiger muskellunge, the
bass, and the trout. There is an abundance of pickerel,
perch, and pike, too-in fact. every variety of toothsome
fresh water fish.

For the Fisherman

Which one of these fishing grounds to give your personal
attention, is something of a problem. There are many
of them-and there are different kinds of fishing, and a
myriad styles of doing it. If we knew your personal
preference, we would try to say right offhand. Perhaps
the best that is possible in a general way is to mention
some of the places that fishermen have tried to keep
secret, but whose popularity has betrayed them; such
good old~sure-to-catch-fishstandbys as Boulder Junction,
Hazelhurst, Minocqua, Sayner, Star Lake, Tomahawk.
T rout Lake and Arbor Vitae.
At most of these fishing grounds, the angler who lacks
an outfit can provide himself with tackle and bait for
every sort of fishing, together with canoes, boats, and
camping outfits. Here, too, the services of experienced

One of the Numerou& Fishing Grounds

The End of a Perfect Day

guides are procurable at moderate rates for those who

feel that fishing means a secluded place, "off all by
myself."
As you know, the state of Wisconsin is deeply apprecia
tive of the welfare of its citizens and guests in this matter
of recreation. It makes many provisions for maintaining
and enhancing the charms of this wonderful outdoors
colIhtry. Among these attentions, the fishermen cer
tainly fare very well. The Wisconsin Conservation
Commission through a highly developed system of
hatcheries, keeps the fishing grounds constantly stocked
with abundant supplies of all the native food fishes.

For the Entire Family

But Northern Wisconsin is not for the happy fisherman
alone. There is much of interest, of health, of wholesome
pleasure and of real rest up there for every man, woman
and child. It is a great place for the entire family. If
you like to swim, these coo!' clear waters are the bracing
tonic for a "bear" of an appetite. If you are fond of
canoeing, here are the famous water trails known to the
early explorers and the Indians before them, and today
in pretty much. the same primeval solitude as when the

Rustic Cabins

voyageurs first dipped a paddle in them. Hiking?

Here's the hiker's seventh heaven of delight-in the cool,
deep forests, with their underground of velvety needles
and cones.
You don't even have to leave your game of golf behind
when you go to Northern Wisconsin. At many different
points you will find a welcome to a sporty course. There
are several we have in mind, Minocqua Heights Golf
and Country Club, Pinehurst Golf Course. Plum Lake
Golf Club and the Trout Lake Golf and Country Club.
Visitors are allowed, upon payment of a- small fee, all
the membership privileges of these excellent clubs.
But maybe you don't want to engage in any such
active sports as golf, tennis, swimming, trout-stream
whipping or muskie-fighting. Maybe you just want to
loaf and invite your soul. You can do it to the queen's
taste.

Anything that Suits Your Purse and Fancy

And you have your choice of places in which to do it,
too. You can take a tent out into the woods and "rough"
it by yourself. Or you can rent a pretty Ii ttle private
cottage or cabin at a resort of the exact size and style

An Alluring Spot

..

Watchful Waiting

which most appeals to you. Or you can settle down to

the convenience and social life of a well-managed hotel.
Anything that suits your purse and fancy. Northern
Wisconsin has for you.

How to Reach Northern Wisconsin

From early in June to mid-September. special efforts
are made to cater to the travel needs and pleasures of
all vacationers. Fine fast trains of the Chicago. Mil
waukee and St. Paul Ry. run daily from Chicago, Mil
waukee, St. Paul, Minneapolis and other centers, direct
to the land of woods and waters. They carry sleeping
cars, coaches. dining cars serving all meals.
Schedules are most conveniently arranged. The fisher
man going up for but a single day of his favorite sport
has an opportunity to be on his favorite lake. all break
fasted and ready for the first cast, early in the morning
after he has left town. The business-man can lock his
desk of a Friday evening, spend a restful week-end with
his family at some Northern Wisconsin lake, and be back
on the job on Monday morning.

Back to Nature

\Vhere Hotels are Superfluous

A Big Time for Little Money

Again, the fact of inexpensiveness adds to Northern
Wisconsin's attractions. Reduced round-trip fares are
in effect, May to September, and these, too, are classified
to meet all needs. Certain of them apply for the week
ends, and for special holidays like May 30th and July 4th;
others cover thirty-day periods, amply covering the nor
mal vacation time-and still others are limited only by
the season, which ends October 31 st.
If Northern Wisconsin is in your mind now, you have
only to call on your nearest railroad ticket agent, or any
representative of the "Milwaukee" Railroad listed on page
13 of this folder for full information about where to go,
how to get there, and what it will cost you. He will give
you a lot of help-even, in Chicago, having your fishing
licenses ready for you, thanks to the courtesy of the
Wisconsin Conservation Commission. Descriptive map
folders, booklets and other literature covering your
inquiries exactly are always available.
If you have ever been to Northern Wisconsin, you know
all we have said is true-and much more. If you haven't
been there, go this year. You will never need to be
urged to go again.
