A few formal / official letters

1. Write an application to the Principal of your college for a canteen.

20 July 2012

The Principal
X College, Dhaka

Subject: Prayer for setting up a canteen

Sir
We, the students of your college, would like to draw your kind attention to the fact that there is no canteen at our
college premises. As our classes start at 8:30 am and continues up to 2:30 pm, we get hungry and are forced to take
unhygienic food (A^vKi Lvevi) from road-side food stalls. For this, many of us often suffer from abdominal
diseases (cUi cxov) which affect our health and study.

We, therefore, hope and pray that you would be kind enough to set up a canteen in our college campus so that we can
take hygienic food and remain fit.

Yours obediently
Toufique, on behalf of the students of X College.

2. Write an application to your Principal for a college common room.

20 July 2012

The Principal
X College, Dhaka

Subject: Prayer for a college common room

Sir
We, the students of your college, would like to draw your kind attention to the fact that our college is a renowned
(weLvZ) college and students come here from far-off places (`~i `~iv). We are to attend classes from 8:00
am to 2:30 pm. Moreover, there is interval (weiwZ) between classes. We can spend these leisure hours in the
common room by reading newspaper, magazines or by playing games. But we have no college common room.

In the circumstances (cwiwwZ) stated above (Dci ewYZ), we pray and hope that you would be kind enough
to take steps to set up a common room in our college.

Yours obediently
Runa Bishas
On behalf of the students of X College.

3. Write an application to the Principal of your college to set up a debating club.

20 June 2012

The Principal
X College, Dhaka

Subject: Prayer for setting up a debating club

Sir
We, the students of your college, would like to draw your kind attention to the fact that our college is very renowned
in our locality, but there is no debating club (weZK Kve) in our college. For this, we are deprived of practising
debate on various subjects though this is highly essential for generating ideas. Besides, the practice of debating makes
a student good orator (ev). In this state, we need a debating club to be set up in our college area.

We, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to take necessary steps to set up a debating club so that
we can develop our presentation and idea generation skill.

Yours obediently
Runa Bishas
On behalf of the students of X College.

4. Write an application to the Principal of your college to set up a computer club in

your college campus.

15 July 2012

The Principal
X College, Dhaka

Subject: Prayer for setting up a computer club

Sir
We, the students of your college, would like to draw your kind attention to the fact that there is no computer club in
our college. There is no denying (A^xKvi Kivi Kvb Dcvq bB) that computer literacy is a must for every
student to survive (euP _vKv) in competition. As we dont have any computer club in our college, we are lagging
behind (wcwQq cowQ) day by day. So a computer club needs to be set up in our college.

We, therefore, hope and pray that you would be kind enough to take necessary steps to set up a computer club in our
college.

Yours obediently
Ruhul Chowdhury
On behalf of the students of X College.

5. Write an application to the Principal of your college for an educational tour/picnic.

20 July 2012

The Principal
X College, Dhaka

Subject: Prayer for permission for arranging an educational tour

Sir
We would like to state that we are the students of your college. We want to go on an educational tour to the
sunderbans. We deeply believe that an excursion (msw gY) to the Sunderbans will be both educative and
pleasant (Avb`RbK). It will surely enrich our domain of knowledge (vbi cwiwa). We have already decided that
we will contribute individually a fixed amount for the excursion. We also expect financial assistance from the college.

We, therefore, hope and pray that you would be kind enough to give us permission and provide necessary financial
help.

Yours obediently
Sakibal Hasan
On be half of the students of X College.

1. Write a letter to the Editor of a Newspaper about Eve-teasing

12 December 2012
The Editor
The Daily Star
Tejgaon, Dhaka

Dear Sir
I shall be highly glad if you kindly publish the following report in your esteemed daily.

Yours Faithfully

(Atiqul Islam)

Eve-teasing has taken a serious turn in our locality.

We are the inhabitants (evwm`v) of ward No. 65 under Dhaka City Corporation. Females especially girl students
of our locality have been suffering from eve-teasing for many days. Now a days it has been intolerable. A few spoiled
(b) young guys gang up (Ro nIqv) in different spots of our locality and tease girl students when they go to their
schools and return to their houses. In addition to this, those derailed (b) boys stand as a barrier on the way and
make indecent gesture (Akxj Afw). They sometimes drag and pull girl students and offer ill proposals (Lvivc
cve). Due to this problem, many females have been suffering from insecurity and losing interest to go to their
respective educational institutes. The activities of law enforcing agencies are not sufficient in this regard. I would like
to draw the attention of the concerned authority to take steps regarding this.

2. Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper about reckless driving

Dear Sir
I shall be highly glad if you kindly publish the following report in your esteemed daily.

Yours faithfully

MA Haque

Reckless driving causes frequent road accident

We have noticed with great horror (AvZ) that the number of road accidents has increased to a great extent
nowadays. We hear the news of killing of some people by road mishap (`yNUbv) almost everyday. Besides, a
large number of people are maimed (cynIqv) for ever due to accidents. Death of the only earning person of a
family brings economic disaster (wechq) for the family. When a person becomes crippled (cy) due to road
accident, his/her family is to spend vast amount of money for treatment. In many cases, the crippled person becomes
burden for the entire (m~Y) family. We know reckless driving is mostly responsible for tragic road accidents.
Passengers are helpless as they hardly have anything to do in this regard. The government should be ruthless
(wbzi) to the drivers responsible for reckless driving so that many lives are not lost for ever.

3. Write a letter to the Editor of a daily newspaper about high prices of commodities

Dear Sir

I shall be highly delighted if you kindly publish the following report in your esteemed daily.

Sajid Khan

High prices of essential commodities

Prices of essential daily commodities (wRwbmc) such as rice, pulses (Wvj), fish, meat, sugar are increasing day
by day. For this unbridled (AwbqwZ) price hike consumers of limited income have been suffering a lot. Prices of
different protein containing items are beyond (evBi) the reach of the poor and middle class people. As a result, they
are bound to keep them away from the taste of those calorie providing food items. We also find huge difference
between the prices of wholesale market (cvBKvwi evRvi) and retail market (LyPiv evRvi). The money generated
from this gap is going to the pocket of middlemen in different levels. Besides, we often also hear the name of market
syndicate where a few people gang up and create artificial crisis (Kwg msKU) to increase prices. It has been
possible due to poor market monitoring system. Strict action (KVvi c`c) has to be taken against those who are
responsible for this. I draw the attention of the concerned (mswk) authorities to take effective steps in this regard.

4. Write a letter-to the editor of a newspaper about widespread practice of taking bribe

Dear Sir

I shall be highly glad if you kindly publish the following report in your esteemed daily.

Yours faithfully

MA Taher

Widespread practice of taking bribe

Bribe (Nyl) has been a synonymous word in the offices of Bangladesh. The matter is open secret and has been so
acute (Zxe) in government offices that people are made bound to pay bribe in almost every office to get things
done. Officers and employees responsible for jobs are reluctant (AwbQzK) to do any work unless and until they
receive backhander (Nyl). If inducement is not paid, they harass people showing legal (AvBbMZ) and other
excuses. It has invited a lot of sufferings for commoners. For this we have got recognition as a corrupt nation
(`ybxwZevR RvwZ) in the world. This is undoubtedly huge scandal for us. Government should take pragmatic
steps (eve c`c) so that the nation can get rid of the curse of bribery (Nyli Awfkvc).

Campus violence

When we turn over (Dvbv) the pages of newspapers or keep our eyes on TV channels we find the news of tedious
(weiwKi) campus violence almost every day. A group of students are seen to attack on another group with lethal
weapons (gvivZK A). They beat up their opponents mercilessly. This violence is so brutal and barbaric
(eeivwPZ) that many of them become seriously wounded. Sometimes meritorious students fall victim of
campus violence and get killed. Hopes and aspirations (Avkv-AvKvv) of those families reduce to dust due to
campus violence. Major political parties harbour and nourish armed cadres for their ill political purpose. We know its
not possible for government alone to stop campus violence. Major political parties have to have intention (BQv) not

to patronize (ccvlKZv Kiv) terrorists in the campuses. Then and only then we will have violence free campus. I
hope our main political parties will do this for the greater welfare of the nation.

Dear Sir
I shall be highly glad if you kindly publish the following report in your esteemed daily.

Yours faithfully

MN Haque

Mosquito menace has been a huge threat

We, the dwellers (evwm`v) of Dhaka, are to suffer a number of menaces. One of them is mosquito menace (gkvi
Dc`e). Mosquito has recently been a huge disturbing element for the people of Dhaka. Moreover, breading of

mosquito is rapidly increasing. Unclean and dirty water bodies are the safe harbour (wbivc` Avkq) for breading
(Drcv`b) mosquitoes. We know mosquitoes spread some fatal diseases including dengue which may even cause the
death of people. Controlling measures taken by City Corporation is insufficient to keep the pace with rapidly
increasing mosquitoes. As a result, lives of city dwellers have been irritating (weiwKi). Situation will be worse if
no effective action is taken immediately. We hope Dhaka City corporation will take realistic steps against mosquitoes
to bring ease in the life of the inhabitants of Dhaka.

Dear Sir

I shall be highly glad if you kindly publish the following letter in your esteemed daily.

Yours faithfully

MM Swapon

Traffic-jam of the capital city of Bangladesh has been intolerable nowadays. Traffic congestion starts at around 8 am
and continues up to 10 pm. The entire city stands still (wbj `vuwoq _vKv) while people are on the way to office
and the time of returning home from the same. The situation is so worse (GZUv Lvivc) that all walks of people are
to suffer untold sufferings while moving from one place to another. For this office going people cannot reach their
respective offices in time, students miss their classes and many patients die on the way to hospital. The value of time
of these lost hours in terms of money is huge. In addition, thousands of vehicles stand motionless (wbj) and burns
fuel unnecessarily and this is undoubtedly (wb:m`n) a great loss for the countrys economy. We notice with
regret that no worth seeing action has been taken to ease the traffic congestion (RUjv). I would like to draw the
attention of our government to do something so that dwellers of Dhaka city can save them from being helpless due to
annoying traffic-jam.
