Method in Action

So then, those who had received his word were

baptized; and that day there were added about
three thousand souls. They were continually
devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and
to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to
prayer.
Acts 2:41-42

Establishing Churches

Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go

back and visit the brothers in all the towns where
we preached the word of the Lord and see how
they are doing” . . . but Paul chose Silas and left,
commended by the brothers to the grace of the
Lord. He went through Syria and Cilicia,
strengthening the churches.
Acts 15:36,40-41

Paul’s Prayer Requests

Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth,

words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make
known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an
ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it
fearlessly, as I should.
Ephesians 6:19-20
Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the
Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it
was with you.

Paul’s Calling

But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my

chosen instrument to carry my name before the
Gentiles and their kings and before the people of
Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer
for my name."
Acts 9:15, 16

Paul’s Calling

Paul’s calling involved bringing the gospel to new

areas that did not have any disciples of Jesus.
Without the presence of Christ-followers and their
stable networks of relationships, Paul primarily
relied on proclamation to accomplish his calling.
Consider Acts 17:16-21.

Paul’s Strategy

Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens,

his spirit was being provoked within him as he
was observing the city full of idols. So he was
reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews and the
God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place
every day with those who happened to be
present. And also some of the Epicurean and
Stoic philosophers were conversing with him.

Paul’s Strategy

Some were saying, "What would this idle babbler

wish to say?" Others, "He seems to be a
proclaimer of strange deities,"--because he was
preaching Jesus and the resurrection. And they
took him and brought him to the Areopagus,
saying, "May we know what this new teaching is
which you are proclaiming? "For you are bringing
some strange things to our ears; so we want to
know what these things mean."

Paul’s Strategy

(Now all the Athenians and the strangers visiting

there used to spend their time in nothing other
than telling or hearing something new.)

Paul’s Prayer Requests

And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for
our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery
of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may
proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way
you act toward outsiders; make the most of every
opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of
grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know
how to answer everyone.
Colossians 4:2-6

The Every Day Way

But in your hearts 1set apart Christ as Lord.

Always 4be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give the reason for 3the
hope that you have. But do this with 5gentleness
and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that
those who speak maliciously against your 2good
behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their
slander.

Sow What?

The relational emphasis makes missional living

very costly, we will have to deny ourselves in
many new and uncomfortable ways.

Sow What?

The relational emphasis makes missional living

very costly, we will have to deny ourselves in
many new and uncomfortable ways.

It will cost us time . . . our schedules will be

assaulted. It will cost us convenience . . . we will
have to go out of our way to cultivate. It will cost
us comfort . . . we will have to open our lives in
new ways that we are not used to.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Sow What?

But it will all be worth it when we see lost people

receive Christ and become authentic disciples . . .
connected to the community of faith and growing
in obedience to all Jesus taught.
