Flyer for Call for Papers

The Third Asia Future Conference (AFC#3) invites proposals for papers, short papers, posters,
and art exhibits according to the following procedures.

Theme
The overall theme for the conference is: Environment and Coexistence
The City of Kitakyushu developed as an industrial city with a strong base in the steel industry.
Because of this, by the 1960s the city started to experience severe water and air pollution. Since
then, however, due to the efforts of its citizens the environment of the city has greatly improved.
In 2011 it became the first model city in Asia for urban green growth under the OECDs Green
City Program. Inspired by Kitakyushus story of coexistence between humans and the natural
environment, the third Asian Future Conference (AFC 3) welcomes discussions of a broad range
of issues based on theme of coexistence in various social and cultural environments.
We welcome full paper, short paper, poster/exhibition proposals related to the following themes
in order to encourage interdisciplinary discussions at AFC 3. From the following list, you will be
asked to choose 3 themes that are most related to your research. Parallel sessions will be
arranged based on the themes you choose.

Philosophy, Religion, Psychology, History, Art, Literature, Linguistics, and others

Languages
Official languages of the Third Asia Future Conference are English and Japanese only. Select the
language of your oral presentation or poster presentation when you register. Abstracts in English
must be no more than 250 words. If your oral presentation is in Japanese, please submit your
abstract both in Japanese (600 letters) and English (250 words). You do not need to submit an
English version of your full paper or short paper if your oral presentation is in Japanese.

Presentations
The Asia Future Conference (AFC) aims to provide a platform for researchers and scholars who
have studied in Japan or who are interested in Japan to meet and discuss the future of Asia. The
AFC is an international and interdisciplinary conference, and encourages diverse approaches to
global issues in order to promote lively discussions. AFC is not a conference for a specific field
of study. Try to make your presentation comprehensible to a general public.
1. Short Paper (2-3 pages)
For lively discussions at the conference, we would ask you to submit a short paper
(2-3 pages) online that describes the contents of your oral presentation. Your
presentation handouts, e.g. summary and PPT can be accepted in lieu of a short
paper. The deadline for online submissions of abstracts is February 28, 2016, and

upon acceptance, the deadline for online submissions (uploads) of short papers is
June 30, 2016. We will consider it as a retraction of your presentation if we do not
receive your short paper by the deadline. Short papers are not eligible for the AFC
Scholarship and Best Paper Awards.
2. Full Paperbetween 5 to 10 pages Submissions are eligible for the AFC
Scholarship and Best Paper Awards
AFC encourages research with an international and interdisciplinary approach and
provides an opportunity to further enhance such research. Even though your work
may not yet be complete, we encourage you to submit work-in-progress in order
to improve it. The deadline for online submission of abstracts is August 31, 2015,
and upon acceptance, the deadline for online submissions (uploads) of the full
papers is March 31, 2016. You can apply for AFC Scholarships upon acceptance
of your abstract on the condition that your full paper is submitted in time.
Scholarship announcement is included in the notice of acceptance. In addition, 20
Best Papers will be selected by the AFC Academic Committee. Awards are given
to the Best Paper authors at the Conference, and the best papers will be included
in the Toward the Future of Asia: My Proposal Vol.3 to be published after the
Conference. Those who have been awarded AFC Best Paper Awards in the past
are not eligible. Full Papers will continue to be accepted after March 31 until June
30, but will not be eligible for the AFC Scholarship and Best Paper Awards.
3. Poster Presentation and Creative Project

Bring your poster presentation printed on A1 size paper to the Conference

Bring your creative project/art work to the Conference and install it by


yourself

The deadline for online submissions of abstracts is February 28, 2016, and upon
acceptance, the deadline for online submissions (uploads) of the data of the poster
presentation and creative project is June 30, 2016. We will consider it as a
retraction of your presentation if we do not receive your data by the deadline.
Poster presentations and exhibitions are not eligible for the AFC Scholarship and
Best Paper Awards.

Assignments of Parallel Sessions


Parallel Sessions will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Kitakata campus of the
University of Kitakyushu. The schedule for parallel sessions will be announced on the AFC
Online System by August 10, 2016. After necessary adjustments, it will be finalized by August
31, 2016.
1. Sessions arranged by AFC Organizing Committee
Except for those arranged by groups (see below), all the full papers and short papers that

are submitted online by June 30, 2016 will be divided according to the language of oral
presentations (English or Japanese). Sessions will then be assigned according to the 3
themes (see below) that you choose when you submit your paper online.
2. Sessions arranged by groups of presenters
If you want to arrange a session by yourself, organize a group consisting of between 3 to
5 presenters, with 1 or 2 session chairs. Please provide the following information via
email ( afc@aisf.or.jp ) to the AFC Secretariat before June 30, 2016.
1. Title and abstract of your session (if your oral presentations are in Japanese, write
in English and Japanese)
2. Name and AFC User Registration Numbers (4 digits) and Submission Numbers (3
digits) of all the presenters and chairs.
It is also possible to host a forum or seminar with a group on the morning of Friday, September
30, 2016. If you are interested in this possibility, please contact the AFC Secretariat. No financial
support will be provided from the AFC for this activity.

Submission Details
1. Register for an account on the AFC 3 website. Upon registration, you can use your ID
and password to continuously access and make any changes to account details. When you
register, you will find the User Registration Number (4 digits) in the Online System.
Please be sure to include this number when you contact the AFC Secretariat.
2. Submit your paper/poster/exhibition abstracts through your personal webpage on the AFC
website:
o Submission Period for abstracts
May 1 to August 31 2015 : Abstracts of full papers to apply for AFC Scholarship
and Best Paper Awards.
May 1 to February 28 2016 : Abstracts of full papers, short papers,
posters/exhibitions (NOT eligible for AFC Scholarship and Best Paper Awards)
o Language for abstracts: English (250 Words). If your oral presentation and poster
presentation will be in Japanese, submit both English (250 Words) and Japanese
(600 Letters).
The abstracts that are received by August 31, 2015 will be screened by the AFC Academic
Committee and the results will be sent by email before October 31, 2015. Acceptance of your
abstract means acceptance of your oral or poster presentations or exhibition at the Conference.

If your abstract is accepted before October 31, you can apply for the AFC Scholarship. The
application form will be included in the notification of the acceptance. The result of the selection
will be notified to all applicants before December 20, 2015.
Upon notification of acceptance of your abstract, submit your full draft paper (at least 5 A4-size
pages, at most 10 pages) again through your personal webpage on the AFC 3 website. Full
Papers submitted by March 31, 2016 will be screened for the Best Paper Award.
The abstracts that are received between September 1, 2015, and February 28, 2016 will be
screened by the AFC Academic Committee and the results will be sent to your email address by
March 31, 2016. Acceptance of abstracts means acceptance of oral or poster presentations or
exhibition at the Conference.
Upon notification of acceptance of the abstract, submit (upload) your draft full paper, short paper
(or presentation handouts) again through your personal webpage on the AFC 3 website. We will
consider it as a retraction of your presentation if we do not receive your data by the deadline.
The results of Best Paper Selection by our Academic Committee will be announced by June 30,
2016. The schedule of parallel sessions will be announced on the AFC Online System by August
10, 2016. After necessary adjustments, it will be finalized by August 31, 2016.

Scholarships
AFC Scholarships (40,000) for 50 Promising Researchers will be available on an application
basis after acceptance of abstracts. Those who submitted abstracts by August 31, 2015, and if
accepted, will be able to apply. Scholarship announcement is included in the notification email of
acceptance. The AFC Academic Committee will announce the selection result by 20 December
2015. We will consider it as a retraction of your presentation if we do not receive your full paper
by March 31, 2016. Scholarship will be paid in cash at the Conference, so you have to pay the
registration fee first. Local participants who are charged discounted participation fee and those
who are subsidized by AFC are not eligible for this scholarship.

Awards

Best Paper Awards will be given to about 20 papers selected by the AFC Academic
Committee, from those submitted before March 31, 2016. An award certificate, souvenir,
and 60,000 prize will be given to the awardees.

Best Presentation Awards will be given to one presenter from each session, to be
recommended by session Chairs. An award certificate and souvenir will be given to the
awardees.

Best Poster/Exhibition Awards will be given to about 10% of the poster presentations and
exhibitions that are selected by all the participants. An award certificate and souvenir will
be given to the awardees.

Award ceremony will be held during the farewell party.


Selection Policy for the Best Paper Awards
Please be reminded that submissions not adhering to the deadline and specific format (language,
number of words/ letters and pages) will not be screened by AFC Academic Committee.
AFC Academic Committee will prioritize abstracts and full papers by the following criteria:

Interdisciplinary approach

International approach

The 3rd Asia Future Conference Subsidy for Indonesian participants

Since the successful 2nd Asia Future Conference (AFC) at Bali, Indonesia in 2014 and in an
effort to defray some of the traveling costs for participants from Indonesia attending the 3rd Asia
Future Conference at Kita-Kyushu, Japan on September 29th-October 3rd, 2016, the AFC
organizing committee has set aside limited funds for subsidy. (Please note: This is a separate
application process from the AFC paper submission and AFC Scholarship application. You have
to submit the abstract/paper and apply for the participation separately through AFC website; the

decisions about subsidies are made separately.) If you are awarded for this subsidy, you may not
be awarded the AFC Scholarship.

Qualifications, quality of paper, good standing in own home institution and the necessity to
receive the subsidy will be considered in decision making.

DESCRIPTION:
The total amount of $1000 would consist of the registration fee for economy researchers ($500)
and travel allowance ($500) for Indonesian nationality whose residence within Indonesia. The
organizing committee will select 10 promising scholars for the subsidy. Awarded subsidy will be
provided AT THE VENUE OF THE CONFERENCE. So the awarded participant should make
sure the attendance in the conference.

ELIGIBILITY:

Indonesian nationality whose residence within Indonesia.

Has completed the online submission of abstract to the AFC by August 31, 2015, and has
been informed of acceptance by October 31, 2015

Does not have a subsidy from AFC or other institutions for the purpose of participating in
the 3rd

Have good standing in their own home institution (i.e., completing work in a timely
manner; no academic probation, etc.). Proved by recommendation letter from his/her
supervisor.

DEADLINE: Monday, November 30, 2015. Late or incomplete applications will not be
