Introduction.
By the year 2005, more than 80% of professional notebook PCs will have Wi-Fi 802.11 wireless
LAN interface. That means more professional will be looking wireless broadband service at their
location to allow them to connect to the internet at will.
Wireless Broadband means the ability to access the internet without the need for phone jack or cable
connections. The wireless standard known as IEEE 802.11b or WiFi, allows notebook Pc and PDA
(Personal Digital Assistant) user to connect to the internet through one shared broadband connection..
Hotspot is a wireless broadband Internet access service available at public places that allows 100%
mobility when

Currently TMNet Hotspot and Maxis Uthopia Hotsport centre is a paid subscriber available more
than 300 location nationwide and Zone Hotspot centre is a free subscriber from Time Dotcom
available at selected Starbuck caf nationwide.
The reasons for the hotspot is that the establishment want to attract crowd at their premises by
providing access to internet where the public can access their e-mails or browsing the internet while
having an informal meeting with their clients.

System Requirements.
1.

Telephone Line.
Active existing or new telephone line from Telekom Malaysia.

2.

Broadband Connection to the internet.

There are several way of connecting to the internet, suitable connections as Streamyx
1Mbps is recommended for the reasons of speed. These connections depend on the location
of subscriber from Telekom switching points (must be in 5 km radius).

3.

Router with ADSL modem as Access Point

Router Access Points are the 'data center' of a wireless network. They are small units that
extend wireless connectivity to desktop and notebook computers containing wireless NICs
(wireless clients can share files, resources and an Internet connection). Mounted on walls for
best reception, Router Access Point send and receive network data to and from wireless
clients using radio waves in the 2.4 GHz frequency range.

Notebook with wireless capability

For the client side, a notebook with wireless capability is a must if they want to access to the
internet at the hotspot. For the new type of notebook, some of its already come with wireless
capability. For those old type of notebook, they can buy a PCMCIA card with the wireless
capability to slot in the PCMCIA slot on the notebook.
