Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will jointly conduct the Graduate
Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE-2016) on January 30 and
31 and February 6 and 7 across the country. It is an online computer-based test consisting of 23 papers. The GATE score of a
candidate reflects a relative performance level in particular subject in the examination. A valid GATE score is mandatory for
getting scholarship from MHRD for higher study.

Admit card can be downloaded from December 17 onwards.

Joint Graduate Entrance Exam

The National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru has
invited applications online through www.nebs.res.in/admissions/
html till October 7 for the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination
in Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences to be held on
December 13 across the country. Those who desire to undergo
research leading to Ph.D in any of the participating institutes or
do integrated M.Sc-Ph.D should appear for the test, which will
be held at several centres including Bengaluru, Hyderabad,
Visadhapatnam, Mumbai, Patna, Pune, Delhi and Kolkata.
The application fee for male applicants is Rs.500 and for
female applicants is Rs.100. The payment can be made online
through credit/debit cards or by demabd draft drawn on SBI in
favour of National Centre for Biological Sciences payable at
Bengaluru.

JIPMER Medical PG Entrance Test

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry, under the Government of India
has invited applications online till October 19 through
www.jipmer.edu.in for the Medical Postgraduate Entrance Examination to be held on November 22 across the country for
admission to its M.D/M.S courses. There are 30 test centres
which include Thiruvanandhapuram, Thrissur, Tirunelvely,
Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Chennai, Bengaluru, Belgaum,
Visakhapatnam, Puducherry, Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata.
The test is based on single shift online distributed objective system of 180 minutes duration.
Those who have passed MBBS or its equivalent qualification and completed or due to complete one-year rotating internship training on or before December 31 are eligible to apply.
The applicants must be registered with central/state medical
registration council. Instructions for online submission of application and other details are given on the website

Aavin gift packs for festivals
This festive season, Aavin, the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk
Producers Federation, is looking to introduce gift packs that will
have something for everyone in the family. The gift pack will be
apt for Navarathri, Deepavali, Christmas and Pongal. Costing
Rs.350 each, the gift pack will be introduced through Aavin outlets
in about a week.
The pink and blue packs will contains 250gms of gulabjamun,
200 gms of badammix powder, two bars of chocolates, two packs
of maavin mango drink and 200 ml of Aavin ghee. The shelf life
of the pack is 25 days. Beyond individual homes, it is looking to
target corporate clients and cooperative societies. A lot of companies give their employees some gift during the festive season,
said an official. Meanwhile, Aavin is building its brand in the
districts through sale of ece cream. Atleast 25,000 litres of ice
cream has been sold in the last few months at district head quarters. The response from the districts has been very good. we
are procuring more refrigeratered vans to enhance supply. Once
our Ambattur plant becomes operational in about two months,
ice creame production will increase to 15,000 litres a day from
the present 3,000 litres, an official said. Aavin is encouragin colleges and students to go for its brand of ice creams.
Deep freezers will be provided free of cost to store ice
creams if the college management provides an undertaking. We
also provide free branding at the location. Already 18 colleges
and canteens attached to several schools sell our ice creams,
said an official.

Simple seps to stave off dengue

The monsoon will soon begin while the rains will be a
welcome relief from the heat, doctors are warning residents to
stay vigilant about fevers and be careful while managing them,
especially dengue. Dengue, the WHO says, is a viral infection
transmitted by the bite of an an infected female Aedes mosquito.
It is not directly transmitted from person to person. Symptoms
appear 3-14 days after the bite. There is no specific treatment.
Symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe
headaches, severe joint and muscle pain, pain behind the eyes
and radhes. While in most cases, patinets will get better without
medical assistance, if any warning sense appear, patients must
see a doctor says Bala Ramachandran, Medical Director, Kanchi
Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital. The danger signs you need to
watch out for, especially when the fever subsides are severe
abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, red spot or patches on the
skin, bleeding from the nose or gums, cold extremities, lethergy,
vomiting blood, blacl stools and difficultu in breathing. If any of
these signs are present, go to the hospital immediately.
While paracetamol can be taken for the fever, do not
otherwise self-medicate, emphasises T.N.Devarajan, senior
consultant, Apollo First Med Hospital. Neglecting dengue fever
can lead to lung failure and its spread to the brain, says Prof.
Devarajan, Since there are four types of virus, patients who
have got one type and have recovered can still get another type
and fall ill again he says.
