FLOWERDALE COMMUNITY RECOVERY UPDATE

25th August 2009

Community Meetings
Community meetings will be held at the Rec Reserve, Spring Valley Road on Friday evenings commencing 8pm
Please note: Meeting will now be held fortnightly. Next meeting is 11th August.

Updates from Community Meeting 21th August.

Flowerdale Recovery Committee

 FRC Meeting with work engines from Flowerdale Forum Workshop was held 2 weeks ago at John Burgess’s.
Also in attendance was Betsy Harrington & Kerry O’Neill, VBBRA, Michael Chesworth & Sally Abbott-Smith,
Shire and Leanne Pleash, DHS. We discussed what has happened to date, who our main contacts are on
projects identified by the community and advised groups on how to go forward. It was a very successful
evening.
 Flowerdale Recovery Plan was submitted to VBRRA by the deadline, 18th August. After very long hours and
dedication we were able to finish on time. At present we are the only area to have submitted to VBRRA.
 Flowerdale Community House has now been allocated $1.76m from the State Government. There will also
be funding for an extra 10 hours a week. This is a great outcome for the whole of community to move
forward.
 For the past 3 months the FRC, Kinglake and Marysville have been discussing issues with school children that
have been affected by the bushfires. Darley have now donated approx $1m to have three counsellors
available in local schools and sports groups to work with the youth of the communities. The anticipated time
to start these programs will be by the end of September and run for 3 years. This is another positive
outcome for communities, youth and parents. More details will be available as program will begin.
 The IPO in Flowerdale is officially furnished with thanks to Darley who funded this project. The new website
which will be operating from this service is nearly complete and hopefully by next week will be fully
operational.
 FRC, Kinder, School & government agencies have had several meetings in regards to the Kinder and where it
will be in the future. The outcome will be soon known once the Shire check out land availability and
requirements. The next meeting will also be held with all Kinder parents to discuss the options.
 Liam McCarthy, Community Development Officer for the Shire is organising a Men’s Day in conjunction with
Lions Club and Rotary Club of Yea. There has been $3,000 allocated to have this event. Activities which may
be included are fishing, Warratah for fencing skills, Sthil to provide chainsaw operations, 4WD and other
bloke interests. Its anticipated that this event will be held in approx. 1 months time.
 Material Aid containers at the Rec Reserve have now all been emptied and goods are now available at the
hub. Thanks to DHS and the volunteers who went through all the items and delivered them to the hub.
There are lots of items available so please call in and take what you need. FRC are looking for funding to
keep the Material Aid open or items will have to go to the Pheasant Creek Warehouse where items will be
able to accessed. See attached survey to filled out by community as to the viability of keeping Material Aid
here in Flowerdale.
 Sewerage, Wind Power, Solar and Telstra tasking teams will be doing assessments and viability studies in our
area.
 In the Royal Commission Interim Report handed down last week some of the key issues identified were
Broadband, Telecommunications and Safety. These were a high priority under the communities Recovery
Plan so we are hoping that will be looked into & identified as a high priority in our area.
FLOWERDALE PLAYGROUP

Today (Tuesday 25th August) Flowerdale playgroup received a $6000 cheque to assist in
the re establishment of our playgroup. It was given to us by Playgroup Victoria and the
