KITZ 10x
Courier Interface Units

The KITZ interface units provide conversion between

K-BUS ports and IEC60870 format data. They provide
the user with an EIA232 (RS232) serial connection for
interfacing to master stations or computers using a
Courier software package.
Different types of Courier software are available for use
with the KITZ, however it can be used to directly
interface to integrated SCADA (Supervisory Control and
Data Acquisition) systems written around the Courier
protocol.
The Courier language was developed specifically for
communication with substation devices such as relays
and measurement devices. Therefore through the use
of KITZ and the Courier Protocol, the user has access to
the device menu structure called the Courier Database.
This enables reading and changing of device functions,
settings, measurements or statistics.
Courier protocol is most commonly used as a K-BUS
system, consisting of a screened twisted pair of wires.
This arrangement is suitable for communicating with
upto 32 devices at a maximum distance of 1km in
electrically hostile environments.
3 KITZ Models are available in the KITZ10x range
> KITZ101 - Interface suitable for desk-top use
> KITZ102 - Interface suitable for use at rear of panel
> KITZ103 - Interface for Optimho relay,

APPLICATION
> KITZ101/102
The KITZ101/102 interface may be used to interface
between 1 and 32 Courier devices to:

PC Serial Port for local substation use

Via compatible modems and telephone network for

remote access

An RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) for integration in

SCADA systems with Courier protocol capability

The KITZ101/102 converts K-BUS to IEC60870 frame

format for use in computer based systems. It is
typically applied in substations where a number of
compatible devices could be located, along with
connection equipment such as modems, RTU's or other
SCADA equipment.

It should be noted that Protection tripping or blocking

signals are not routed on the K-BUS/KITZ system and
special provision must be made using dedicated
equipment or connections for such signals. However
remote tripping and closing commands can be
transmitted via K-BUS and KITZ where available as
part of integrated control systems.
KITZ101/102 may be integrated into intelligent SCADA
systems where all or part of the system is available on
the Courier protocol. Such systems simply require an
EIA232 or Fibre Optic (via converters) port on the
SCADA or RTU for connection to the KITZ101/102.
SCADA systems without the use of the Courier
protocol may also utilise KITZ by use of other Protocol
converters, for example KITZ202 for Modbus or
KITZ204 for IEC60870-5-103 based systems.
Typical application of the KITZ101/102 is shown in
figures 1 to 2.

KITZ can provide local and remote access via K-BUS

for setting changes, disturbance and event record
extraction and also for Circuit Breaker operations.

> KITZ103

> Functions of KITZ103

The KITZ103 allows the user to interface the Optimho

(LFZP) range of distance protection relays to the
K-BUS network. Housed in the same case for
mounting identical to KITZ102, the KITZ103 provides
protocol conversion between Opticom (the protocol
used by Optimho relays) and Courier Protocol. One
KITZ103 is require for each Optimho relay which is
then connected to the K-BUS in the same way as any
other K-BUS device. It then allows the most commonly
needed information exchanges with the Optimho relay
as if it were any other K-BUS Device. Additionally, the
KITZ103 allows use of OPTICOM software (dependant
on version) to access the Optimho relay over the
K-BUS connection.
A typical application of KITZ103 is shown in figure 3.

The function of the KITZ103 is different to that of the

KITZ101/102. The KITZ103 is a protocol converter for
use with the Optimho (LFZP) range of relays. It
provides conversion between the Opticom protocol
(RS232) and Courier (K-BUS). It provides this partial
interface by conversion of certain information into a
similar format as used by K-Series relays. This
information includes fault records, measurement
values and allows active setting group changes. The
KITZ103 automatically 'logs on' to the Optimho with
which it starts up. Once this connection is made, it will
stay active to detect and extract new fault records and
measurement values. The KITZ103 can be 'logged off'
by the user via the Courier interface or by pressing the
RESET key on the relay user interface. The unit
automatically extracts any fault record generated by
the Optimho, and also generates a Courier event and
passes this on K-BUS. This event is created from the
time, date and description of the extracted fault. As
the KITZ103 acts as a protocol converter for Opticom
to Courier, the KITZ103 also inserts an Opticom
identifier, meaning that later versions of the Opticom
software (V5.00 or above for Opticom100 and V3.00 or
above for Opticom 140) can be used over the K-BUS
interface to access the relay. This includes the ability
to change relay settings.

Time-tagging of K-BUS messages

The main function of the KITZ101/102 is to interface

the K-BUS communication link to a PC based system
(IEC870 data format).
It can also be configured to interface with a remote
master station. Communication may be established
via telephone networks and modems to access the
devices in much the same way as a local connection.
In addition, the KITZ101/102 can also be configured to
add an IEC870 format date and time tag to any
received K-BUS messages that contain an
unsynchronized millisecond counter. This allows
accurate sequence of events (SOE) despite modems
or transmission delays on the IEC870 network. The
internal Real Time Clock is backed in case of loss of
power, by an internal battery.

HARDWARE DESCRIPTION

USER INTERFACES

The KITZ10x interfaces are housed in a case 57.5mm

x 163mm x 216mm Deep. This is available for Desktop
(KITZ101) or Rear of panel mounting (KITZ102 or
KITZ103).

> Front Panel

The functions of the KITZ10x are controlled by

software, run by a 16bit microprocessor. A Serial
Communications Controller controls all communication
functions. The KITZ10x has two communication
channels, one K-Bus and one RS232/IEC870, each
able to receive and transmit via independent
communication ports. Both RS232 and K-BUS ports
are located at the rear of the KITZ10x. The K-BUS
port is a 3 terminal connection (2 signal plus screen)
and is not polarity sensitive. The RS232 port is a male
25 way D-Type connection, which normally requires a
switched or 'null-modem' connection.

> Communications Interface

KITZ10x support a variety of Courier based
communication packages. The latest MiCOM S1
enables communication with the rear ports of any
connected courier devices, allowing full configuration
as if it were the front port. This allows configuration of
the full K-BUS spur of devices without the need for
separately connecting cables to each device's front
port, the process can even be carried out remotely by
use of a suitable modem. Previous versions of
software such as Courier Access (CAS), Protection
Access Software & Toolkit (PAS&T), COURIERCOMM, LFZRCOM or OPTICOM (KITZ103 - subject to
version) also function well with KITZ10x maintaining
important backward compatibility.
