ORU Spring Christian Worldview Lectures – March 25–26, 2010

Right Reason about Human Sexuality

Making Sense of the Creational Design
featuring J. Budziszewski,* Ph.D.

 There is no mystery about the biblical norm for human sexuality. Marriage is a lifelong covenant union
between a man and a woman, and the use of the sexual powers is reserved for this relationship alone.
Contemporary culture operates on a different norm. Almost anything goes— and the "almost" is getting
so thin that soon the norm may be just "anything." To non-Christians— and even to confused Chris-
tians—the biblical norm seems crazy.
When asked what makes God's provisions for sexuality right, have we any answer to give besides "Just
because He says so?" Why should anyone believe that He did say so? Are there reasons for what we
believe to be His commands?
This series of lectures shows that God's instructions about human sexuality are not arbitrary decrees,
but correspond to the deepest needs of created human nature. You don't have to hang up your brain at
the door; right reason not only confirms the Scripture's teaching but also explains it more fully.
Here are the talks, times, and location:

Right Reason – The gift of revelation doesn't mean we can turn off our minds. God also reveals His
will through the proper use of the minds and consciences that He gave us.  THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 7:00 p.m.,
Zoppelt 101 & 102

Right Reason and Sex – Christian moral norms about sexuality don't come out of
nowhere. They are grounded in the human creational design.  FRIDAY, MARCH 26, 1:30 p.m., Zoppelt

Right Reason, Sex, and Dynamite – Can we give a gentle and reasonable defense of
Christian views on the explosive sexual issues of the day without simply droning "the Bible says"?

 Professor Budziszewski is a nationally-known authority on the ancient tradition that philosophers call
the natural law and that St. Paul called the law "written on the heart" (Rom. 2:14–15). He received his
Ph.D. from Yale in 1981 and has been teaching about politics and ethics at the University of Texas ever
since. The author of numerous scholarly works, most recently The Line Through the Heart: Natural Law
as Fact, Theory, and Sign of Contradiction (www.isibooks.org), he also writes a popular online column for
Christian college students called "Office Hours" (www.Boundless.org), and has written three books for
