-these are marine macroalgae; simple organisms that fall into the category of
plants
-and are consumed as food in many parts of the globe
-seaweed is one of the most prized natural resource when transformed into
industrial raw materials
-depending on the variety, seaweeds are processed into carrageenan,
alginates or agar
-these are hydrocolloids used in food additives, animal feeds, cosmetics,
medicines, fertilizers, and many other industrial products
-In the zamboanga peninsula, seaweeds are farmed in many different coastal
cities and municipalities
-where more than 17,000 hectares are planted with seaweeds

III. Business Opportunities

-In 2014, 258,934 metric tons of fresh seaweeds were produced in the
region
-majority of the seaweeds are processed into Raw Dried Seaweeds (RDS) by
farmers using the sun drying technique in stilts located near their farm
-RDS are shipped to hydrocolloid processors in Zamboanga City and Cebu
-in Zamboanga City, existing facilities process RDS to semi-refined
carrageenan and alkali-treated cottonii chips

-The industry benefits more than 24,000 farmers and 100 traders in the
region
-seaweeds farming and trading have become the main source of income for
many coastal farmers

-The industry and its players are receiving numerous support from the National
Government and Local Government Units
-with programs and projects focusing on productivity and efficiency,
market access and sound business environment
-the private sector also contributes to the industrys development through
continuous research and information dissemination

-With the continuous demand for hydrocolloids and more than 20,000 hectares
available for farming, there are many opportunities and room for growth in the
industry
