Review : Implementing E-Learning for

Increasing
Students Motivation in Learning
English
Introduction : In this article the author tries to establish the difference between
traditional teaching system and E-learning for increasing students motivation in
learning English. He first gives the definition of traditional teaching system and
then establishes how E-learning is the other side of the coin of which the concept
of teaching-learning is a part. This article discusses two conceptualization of
teaching-learning process. The traditional teaching system in the class centers the
teacher only explaining the material; and, contrary, the students just listening it
passively and doing the exercise given. Teacher and text book are the main sources
for the students in learning the material. This type of teaching contributes a high
possibility of non-cooperative learning in the class. While E-learning has already
been proved by lots of researchers success in increasing the quantity of learning
interaction, not only for the students and teachers but also between the students and
students and their enhance interactivity.
Summary : Saefurrohman in his article focuses upon the relationship between Elearning and motivation. He first instigates the reader to learn about the principles
and activities in conducting E-learning in the classroom. He then enlists the basic
principle and activities which encloses the use of computers and networks in
creating, developing, assessing, and facilitating the teaching-learning where the
students become the centre of it. It is implemented interactively, everywhere and
anytime. This article also talks about motivation. The author stress that motivation
plays an important part in teaching and learning activities. He also mentioned that

motivation can be stimulated by outside or internal factor that arouses the students
to action, pushes them in particular directions, and keeps engaged in certain
activities. In other words, to implement E-learning among students, its needs to
work hands in hands with motivation.

Body:Methodological aspect of the author :

Saefurrohman Lutfi Istikharoh in this article uses Classroom Action Research
(CAR) approach by which it enabled the teacher research of this project to follow
the steps that helped her / him to reflect upon her / his teaching and improve the
students motivation in learning English. The steps involves a self-reflective cycle
of indentifying a situation or problem, planning a change, acting and observing the
processes and consequences, then re-planning, and so forth.
The project began and ended with interviews and questionnaires. In total, two
interviews were conducted and three questionnaires were administered. A semistructured interview and a structured questionnaire were conducted at the start of
the study to collect data on students motivation in learning English. Then a variety
of E-learning activities were introduced to replace the traditional method.
A checklist was used to help the teacher researcher to observe pupils behavior and
performance during class. Afterwards, another semi-structured interview was
conducted and an identical questionnaire was distributed to pupils to gather their
perceptions toward the use of E-learning in teaching and learning process.
Finally, an additional questionnaire was distributed to pupils to collect their overall
opinions before the use of E-learning. Pupils perceptions and opinions before and
after the changes were compared and analyzed.

Originality of the aspect :

On the Innovative E-Learning Activities : The E-learning activities used in this

project were adapted from Elliot ( 2000 ). They included as follow :
1.
2.
3.
4.

Exploring the TEFL Web or Discovery and Browsing

Discussion Forum or Chatting
Developing web Templates or Blogging
Web-Based Self-Assessment and Peer Evaluation

On the Data Collection : Quantitative data came from the questionnaire; and
qualitative data came from the interviews and observation. In this way, data were
triangulated to ensure validity (Meoleong, 2001)
1. Questionnaire: A questionnaire is a number of writers question which are
used to gain information from respondents about their knowledge, belief, etc
(Arikunto, 2006). The questionnaire is used to measure the students
motivation in learning English.
2. Interviews: An interview is a communication process and interaction that
happened between interviewers and interviewee. The quality of interview is
determined by condition of them. It can run well or not when that
interviewee is willingly to give information that we need (Arikunto, 2006).
3. Observation: Teachers carefully observed students performance during
lessons. They made use of an observation checklist to record what had
happened in class that helped them investigate, analyze, and conclude their
findings when the project came to an end.

Findings of the article:

The findings of this research elaborated the final results of both pre and post
activities in implementing E-learning. From the tabulated data collected from both
pre and post activities in implementing E-learning, it can be seen that in almost all
of the motivation indicator reflect the students learning style and the students
feeling in learning English improved significantly.
The indicators which contribute to the increasing students motivation in learning
English are enlisted as follows:

1. 22 out of 25 samples were so enthusiatic to joining the lesson and in

exploring their ideas.
2. Around 20 out of 25 students were able to interact with the teacher
communicatively.

Moral Significance of the study:

The teaching-learning through E-learning changed from teacher-centered
classroom to student centered one. This change gave a very good effect to the
students learning style. They could be very creative in developing their ideas.
Overall, a good relationship among the teacher and the students and between the
students and others made them easy in doing every task given by the teacher.
Consequently, the student could be very disciple in submitting their assignments on
time. This disciple, moreover, will reflect positive point of view of implementing a
good English teaching-learning process through E-learning.

Conclusion: I shall conclude by saying that the article written by Saefurrohman

Lutfi Istikharoh has by far the most knowledge acquired about a particular topic.
This topic was well-chosen and accumulates knowledge from various different
sources. This topic instills a sense of importance that the teaching-learning process
through E-learning should be implemented in all teaching skills. It is importance to
consider how these E-learning differ and what characteristics make them important
as vehicles for education.
