BELTON Last year,

DeSoto survived a lastminute scare to hold on
against Cibolo Steele.
This year, it was
Steeles turn to make plays
when it counted.
Steele recovered an onside kick attempt with
4:26 remaining in the
game, then gained three
key first downs all on
running plays to hold
off DeSoto 35-33 Thursday night.
DeSoto (1-3) scored on
its final two possessions,
but couldnt get the ball
back to mount a gamewinning drive.
After its defense forced
Steele into its second
turnover of the second
half, DeSoto mounted an
eight-play, 40-yard scoring drive to potentially tie
the score.
Quarterback Tristen
Wallace broke a 16-yard
run to get the ball to the
Steele 7-yard line, and
L.D. Brown scored two
plays later with 9:34 remaining, giving DeSoto a
chance to tie the score at
28-28 with a successful
two-point conversion. allace scrambled and found
a receiver open in the back
of the end zone but
couldnt complete the
pass.
Steele stretched its
lead to 35-26 on the next
possession, scoring in five
plays and a little over a
minute thanks to two
DeSoto penalties and a
20-yard touchdown run
by Travell Lumpkin.
Wallace led DeSoto
back on its subsequent
drive, set up by two key
completions to Brendon
Rushing and Kirk Johnson. Wallace scored on an
8-yard run with 4:26 remaining, and DeSoto opted to go for an onside kick
to get the ball back, but
Steele recovered.

GARLAND Sophomore quarterback Jaylen

Mayden passed for 540
and six touchdowns as
Sachse cruised to a District 11-6A opening win at
Williams Stadium.
Mayden wasted no
time finding his favorite
target when he hooked up
with Devin Duvernay for a
15-yard touchdown pass
to help give Sachse an early 10-0 lead. Sachse and

Tyler Lee exchanged the

lead seven times in a backand-forth first half.
Sachse (4-0, 1-0) took a
31-27 lead late in the first
half when Devin Duvernay showed off some nifty
footwork on a 75-yard
touchdown run on which
he ran to his left then cut it
up the field and outran everyone down the sideline
for the score.
