SECRETS OF REVELATION:
What Is a Book?
As already explaine d, the
knowledge of Isolated Letters is a
secret between Allaah-SWT and HisSWT Prophet-SW. Those whom
Allaah-SWT blesses with a cordial
relationship with the Holy ProphetSW may also be enlightened in
accordance with their spiritual status.
It is essential to hold this belief and to
enjoy the merit of recitation without
probing into their meanings.
This is comprehensive, complete
and a true Book. To scribble and put
papers together does not make a
book. Every book has a certain topic,
and it should convey to its readers the
true and complete facts about it.
Human beings work on assumptions,
whereas only Allah-SWT's Word is
final and conclusive. Thus only a
Divine Book meets the true definition
of a book. Here Allaah-SWT declares
the Quran as the Divine Book
revealed unto the Holy Prophet-SW to
warn the arrogant of the end results of
their wrongdoings, and guide the
believers to a Path whereby they may
attain the maximum of His-SWT
Nearness. Allaah-SWT consoles the
Holy Prophet-SW not to be aggrieved
by peoples, negative response to his
untiring efforts to convey the Divine
Message. Those who do not accept
will be condemned to Hell, in
perpetual torment. Their denial is by
their own choice and free will,
therefore, the Holy Prophet-SW need
not grieve over it.

It was the innate compassion of

the Holy Prophet-SW that he-SW was
aggrieved by the inevitable ill fate of
even his-SW antagonists. Just
imagine how affectionate will he-SW
be towards his followers. If only the
Muslims realize it, they would not
disobey Allaah-SWT lest it aggrieves
the Holy Prophet-SW besides
causing personal losses. It is also
clarified that the interpretation of the
Divine Book is the domain of AllahSWT's Prophet-SW, and none else,
nor is anyone given the capability to
do so. Thus the only authentic
Commentary of the Quran will be the
one substantiated by Hadith. I believe
that without Tazkiyah, a person may
force himself to obedience but shall
remain void of its pleasure.
O People! This Book has been
revealed by your Rabb-SWT , Whose
Providence dictates that He-SWT will
not only fulfill your temporal but also
your spiritual and eternal needs. So
He-SWT has provided for both. Just
as you take food and medicine for
your physical health similarly for your
eternal bliss, it is imperative that you
worship and "obey Him-SWT . It is
your duty to accept the Message of
Allaah-SWT whole heartedly. Even if
you have to lose your life in the
process you must, but do not let the
eternal bliss slip out of your hands.
This can only be accomplished when
He-SWT is accepted as the centre of
all your hopes and aspirations and
none else. Obviously, you will have to
obey the one you pin your hopes
upon. This is a very simple concept,
but here have always been very few
people who understood it, while most
were dazed by the charm and glitter of
this world. They indulged in sin to
such an extent that they qualified for
punishment in this very life. Many of
them were destroyed over night while
engaged in merry making, while
others perished during their midday
siesta, and never got the chance to
wake up. All of them inhabited this
very earth, and never gave any
consi de ratio n to th e Divi ne
Commandments. Finally when they
were seized by His-SWT Affliction,
the realization of their follies availed
them naught. Therefore, O man! Do
pay heed to the fate of your
disbelieving and defiant ancestors.n

The English Tafseer of Quran

By: Ameer Muhammad Akram Awan

Translation and Tafseer Surah Name: Al-A'raf Meaning: The Heights, Reveleaed at Makkah
New Surah

he foundation of Islam is on the

transparent belief in the Unity of
Allah-SWT . The relationship
between man and Allah-SWT is such
that the former must present his
needs only before Him-SWT display
his utter humility and insignificance.
The theme of the preceding Surah is
further expanded here, with emphasis
on the importance of the Prophethood
because no one can, on his own,
comprehend Allah-SWT's
Magnificence. He-SWT is beyond
human senses. Al lah-SWT's
Cognition is a feeling induced into the
human heart, and this honour is
conferred upon the subtle hearts of
His-SWT Prophets-AS through
Revelations. They distribute these
blessings amongst their followers,
through a process known as
Tazkiyah. In other words, the heart
that receives this light is purified and
capacitated to comprehend the
Divine Book and the Wisdom. Thus
the cognition of the Prophet-ASs
paves the way to the Cognition of
Allah-SWT . This Surah discusses
the importance of Prophethood,
supporting it with both logical and
chronicle evidence, in the light of
history of the preceding nations and
their Prophets"-AS their conduct and
the end results thereof. Towards the
end is the discussion on the Unity of
Allah-SWT . Also listed are some of
His-SWT Commands to facilitate
His-SWT Cognition through
obedience

Eat Your Skin

Conditioner

Go Au Naturale

Don't wear makeup (not on a daily

basis). This past winter, I was back in
Pakistan sitting around my 75+ year
old grandmother. I was in awe looking
at her skin and how luminous it was.
Of course, we all know the secret - 'no
makeup'. Makeup was not a social
norm as it has become today and they
didn't think it made sense to cover
their skin in chemicals. Which makes
sense. So what do you do? Leave
makeup to special occasions. But
make sure you that when you do wear
makeup, you cleanse your skin
thoroughly before and after.

Healthy, youthful skin requires healthy fats.

Eat plenty of olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed
butter, avocados and nuts every day.

Go 3-Free On Your Nails

Until fairly recently, most nail polishes
contained three nasty ingredients: DBP
(dib ut yl pht hala te), to luen e, an d
formaldehyde. Phthalate, as discussed
earlier, have been linked to birth defects.
To l u e n e
is also linked to birth defects and reproductive
and developmental problems; formaldehyde, is
a carcinogen and an indoor air pollutant with
links to birth defects. So go 3-Free (as in, free of
these three nasties). Some 3-Free lines are
Butter London (who coined the term 3-free),
Zoya, Essie, OPI (Australian collection &
newer), NARS (new formula), and Revlonn

or those of you who know me,

my life has always revolved
around cosmetics and makeup.
When I worked within the beauty
industry, skin whiteners and lash
extenders excited me. I was forced to
wear a lot of the gunky stuff because
my job was to sell it. It wore me down,
one blush stroke at a time. Don't get
me wrong. I'm not banning makeup or
going on a makeup strike. A nice shade of lipstick definitely brings a smile to my face. I just don't believe in the list of
products that you 'need' in order to look or feel beautiful, especially every day.
I've been out of a moisturizer for over two months. Every time I step into a pharmacy or a cosmetic store, I'm baffled by
the overabundance of products that are staring back at me. Each time I pick up a few to compare, then put them back
down and rush out of the store with the headache that comes with it. All this hunting for that perfect moisturizer made me
become more aware of the various chemicals that we put on our skin, hair and nails daily. If the product has more
ingredients than I have fingers on one hand, it's bye -bye. Sure, there are chemical-free and organic products available
too. However, not all chemical-free products are ecologically sound and not all organic products are chemical-free. It's
like food shopping: a knotted ball of competing messages. Here are some very basic beauty tricks that I've researched
and applied in my daily life.

Sustainable, 100% Natural Beauty Tricks

Befriend Plant Oil

My moisturizers are now
my olive oil, coconut oil, and
almond oil. You can
actually replace all
manner of beauty
p r o d u c t s moisturizer, body
lotion, deep
cleanser, even
shavi ng creamwith just one or two plant
oils. Choose from coconut oil, sweet
almond (my favorite), olive oil,
macadamia oil, jojoba or argan oil.
Just make sure whichever oil you use
is organic and cold-pressed.
Extraction processes using heat
destroy the nutrients, essential fatty
acids and vitamins in these oils.

Make Your Face

a Cuppa
A strong tea
using any
herb can be
applied as a
skin toner.
Lemongra
ss and
lemon balm calm
acne and
even out skin tone, chamomile
soothes sensitive skin and reduces
redness, rosemary protects against
the sun's UV-rays and the damaging
effects of pollution and lavender is
uplifting, cooling and even slightly
antiseptic. You can make up a tea and
store it in a glass spray bottle in the
fridge for up to a week.

Get Yourself Liquid

Castile Soap
Traditionally, olive oil would go
through the process of saponification
to make castile soap, but these days
most contain a few different types of
plant oils. It can be used as a
shampoo as well as a dishwashing
liquid. It could also be diluted and
used as a spray n'wipe.

Highlight Your Hair Naturally

Lighten your hair using a strong chamomile tea in the final rinse after
shampooing. To enhance dark hair, use rosemary (boiled as a strong tea). Using
these natural ingredients will add shine, softness and volume as well as
enhance your color.

Fight Blemishes with

Essential Oils
I never had a problem with acne growing
up, thankfully. However, every now and then I
get a pimple. It's hormonal, or something.
Pure lavender essential oil is a naturally
antibacterial. Just apply a tiny amount on the
spot and watch it work the magic.

Don't wear Perfume

Being a huge fan of perfumes, this
one is particularly tough for me as
well. Perfume manufacturers only list
a few chemicals they use because the
true formula is officially protected as a
'trade secret'. But what is known is
that perfumes contain phthalates,
which can cause reproductive and
neurological damage according to
CDC. Scary, right?

Dilip Kumar launched Omar Sharif
Whether it is love or lust for
Hollywood roles, Dilip was happy to
be an Indian actor. When David Lean
offered him a prominent role in
"Lawrence of Arabia", Dilip politely
declined. The rationale to refuse will
remain a Hitchkock suspense. The
role eventually went to Omar Sharif
and rest is history. I remember
reading an article when the debutant
NavinNischol landed his first role and
sought the thespian's advice.
Dilip Saab said learn to say "No" in the
industry. And perhaps it may have
been this philosophy that led Dilip
Saab to say no to David Lean. His
"no" became a big "yes" for Omar
Sharif".

Dilip's dialogue with Mian Sharif

Narrating a startling anecdote
recounted by Saeed Mehdi, the exPrincipal Secretary to Prime Minister
Sharif at the time of the Kargil War in
May 1999, foreign minister
KhurshidKasuri says, "According to
Saeed, one day he was sitting with
PM Sharif when the telephone bell
rang and the ADC informed the PM
that the Prime Minister of India Atal
Bihari Vajpayee wished to speak with
him urgently." After a few comments,
Mr. Vajpayee put Dilip Kumar on the
phone and this is the dialogue from
the Peshawar Pathan.."Mian
Sahib, we did not expect this from you
since you have always claimed to be a
great supporter of peace between
India and Pakistan." Kasuri writes in
his new book, "Neither a Hawk Nor a

What about this Sheriff?
As an advertising practitioner in

Madras, I was happy to note that Dilip

Saab was honored as the Sheriff of
Bombay.and how could I an
admirer of this living legend could not
respond to this unique development.
Working at JWT with that creative
genius AnvarAlikhan and a gifted
visualizer U.M. Subba Rao, I initiated
the thought of conceiving a topical

concept that was approved and

opener during a period when
fast-bowling resources around the
world were plentiful
Apar t fr om his physical
appearance, everything about Sunil
Gavaskar was immense, especially
the statistical milestones he
achieved over his 17-year
international career. At a time when
fast bowling around the world was
strong and healthy, Gavaskar's
technical purity and balance, his
impeccable judgement of length and
line, his insurmountable powers of
concentration, and his range of
strokeplay have all left such an
indelible mark that he remains one of
the foremost opening batsmen of all
time. For India he was a blessing,
giving the team a resilience that it
had sorely lacked in the past. There
had been other top-class Indian
batsmen before him, but none who
sustained the run-scoring
excellence as relentlessly as
Gavaskar did.
He started his Ranji Trophy
career with a fifth-ball duck against
Mysore, but hundreds in each of his
next three Ranji matches confirmed
the potential. Even so, none would
have anticipated the stunning
manner in which he announced his
arrival on the world stage.

West Indies in 1971, Gavaskar

a tally that remains a record for the
most prolific series by a batsman on
debut. A couple of his half-centuries
helped India to their first win against
West Indies, in Port-of-Spain, a
venue that remained his favourite
throughout his career. That kicked
off an amazing sequence of scores,
with centuries in each of the next two
Tests, and he signed off quite
majestically, scoring 124 and 220 in
the last Test - again in Port-of-Spain to become only the second batsman
in Test history to score a hundred
and a double in the same match.
The start was almost too good to
be true, and it was inevitable that
those lofty standards wouldn't be
sustained, even for a batsman as
focused and gifted as Gavaskar: in
his next 26 innings, he scored fewer
runs than he had in his first eight, and
managed just one century, 101 in a
losing cause at Old Trafford in 1974.
That brief lean spell, though, was
the precursor to Gavaskar's best
sustained period in international
cricket: in the five years between
1975 and 1979, he averaged nearly
60 and had a fantastic rate of
converting fifties into hundreds.
Arguably his best innings - the 221
against England at The Oval - came
during this phase. In the 10 series he
played in these five years, he
averaged 50 or more in eight, and
over 75 in three.

The next five years were

considerably less successful - in 11
series during the early- and mid1980s his average exceeded 50 only
three times. This was also the period
when he played his worst series against the touring England side in
1984, Gavaskar totalled 140 runs in
eight innings at a miserable average
of 17.50.
The clamours for his retirement
grew during this period, but
Gavaskar ensured that when he did
leave, he did so on his own terms,
averaging more than 58 in his last 16
Tests, and scoring an unforgettable
96 in his final innings.
Despite having played during a
period when run-scoring was
considerably more difficult than it is
today, Gavaskar achieved some
incredible numbers, becoming the
first to get to 10,000 Test runs and 30
centuries. During the two decades in
which he played, only six batsmen
scored more than 4000 runs at a 50plus average.
One of the most remarkable
aspects of Gavaskar's career was
the success he achieved against
West Indies, the best team of the
1980s. He scored 13 centuries
against them, which is the secondhighest for a batsman against one
opposition; only Don Bradman, with
19 against England, has more.
Bradman's overall rate of scoring
hundreds was obviously much better
than Gavaskar's, but in this case the
rates were comparable: Bradman's
19 came in 37 Tests, while Gavaskar
needed 27 matches for his 13
hundredsn

Eid-ul-Adha-History
and Origin

wo of the most important Islamic

holidays of the year are Eid-ul-Fitr
and Eid-ul-Adha. While the
former marks the end of the long fasting
month of Ramadan, Eid-ul-Adha marks
the end of Hajj, the sacred pilgrimage to
the holy city Mecca. It's customary for
every able Muslim (as prescribed in the
Five Pillars of Islam) to go on a Hajj at
least once during his lifetime. Also
popularly known as the Festival of
Sacrifice, this Muslim holiday Eid-ulAdha commemorates Prophet
Abraham's unselfish act of sacrificing
his own son Ishmael to the One God,
Allah.
The history behind Eid-ul-Adha
follows the story of the faithful Abraham,
who was instructed by Allah in a dream
to raise the foundations of Kaaba, a
black stone, the most sacred Muslim
shrine in Mecca (Saudi Arabia), which
the Muslims face during their prayers
(salat). Immediately responding to the
Lord's call, Abraham set off for Mecca
along with his wife and son, Ishmael. At
that time, Mecca was a desolate and
barren desert and Abraham had to face
a lot of hardships. However, he
s up pl i c at ed A l l ah' s co mman ds
uncomplaining. In a divine dream, he
also saw himself sacrificing his son
Ishmael for Allah's sake. When he told
this to Ishmael, the latter immediately
asked his father to carry out Lord's
commands without faltering and
assured that he was completely ready
to give up his life for God. But
miraculously enough, when Abraham
was about to sacrifice Ishmael, Allah
spared the boy's life and replaced him
with a lamb. And this is what Abraham
ultimately sacrificed.
To commemorate this outstanding
act of sacrifice (qurbani) by Prophet
Abraham, people sacrifice a lamb, goat,
ram or any other animal on Eid-ul-Adha
and give the meat to friends, neighbors,
relatives and the needy. People who are
away from the holy pilgrimage, Hajj,
also carry out this traditional sacrifice.
Hence Eid-ul-Adha is also known as the
Feast of Sacrifice or the Day of
Sacrifice.
Eid-ul-Adha begins from the 10th

ROSHNI Issue No.85

day of the 12th Islamic month DhulHijjah. But the date of Eid-ul-Adha
depends on the visibility of the moon
each year. Eid-ul-Adha is known by
different names in different parts of the
world. For instance, Eid-ul-Adha is
known by the name Hari Raya Aidiladha
in south-east Asia. In Singapore, the
local name for Eid-ul-Adha is Hari Raya
Haji and in Malaysia, people refer to this
festival as Id al-Adha and has made it a
national holiday there. Indians know
Eid-ul-Adha as Id al-Adha or Idu'zZuha.
And in Bangladesh, Eid-ul-Adha is
known as Eid-ul-Azha or sometimes
even Id al-Adha. But whatever the
name, the celebratory spirit of Eid-ulAdha runs high among Muslims all over
the world, the geographical variations
notwithstanding.
What does Eid al-Adha
commemorate?
During the Hajj, Muslims remember
and commemorate the trials and
triumphs of the Prophet Abraham. The
Qur'an describesAbraham as follows:
"Surely Abraham was an example,
obedient to Allah, by nature upright, and
he was not of the polytheists. He was
grateful for Our bounties. We chose him
and guided him unto a right path. We
gave him good in this world, and in the
next he will most surely be among the
righteous." (Qur'an 16:120-121)
One of Abraham's main trials was to
face the command of Allah to kill his only
son.
Upon hearing this command, he
prepared to submit to Allah's will. When
he was all prepared to do it, Allah
revealed to him that his "sacrifice" had
already been fulfilled. He had shown
that his love for his Lord superseded all
others that he would lay down his own
life or the lives of those dear to him in
order to submit to God.
Why do Muslims sacrifice an animal
on this day?
During the celebration of Eid alAdha, Muslims commemorate and
remember Abraham's trials, by
themselves slaughtering an animal
such as a sheep, camel, or goat. This

action is very often misunderstood by

those outside the faith.
Allah has given us power over
animals and allowed us to eat meat, but
only if we pronounce His name at the
solemn act of taking life. Muslims
slaughter animals in the same way
throughout the year. By saying the
name of Allah at the time of slaughter,
we are reminded that life is sacred.
The meat from the sacrifice of Eid alAdha is mostly given away to others.
One-third is eaten by immediate family
and relatives, one-third is given away to
friends, and one-third is donated to the
poor. The act symboli zes our
willingness to give up things that are of
benefit to us or close to our hearts, in
order to follow Allah's commands. It also
symbolizes our willingness to give up
some of our own bounties, in order to
strengthen ties of friendship and help
those who are in need. We recognize
that all blessings come from Allah, and
we should open our hearts and share
with others.
It is very important to understand
that the sacrifice itself, as practiced by
Muslims, has nothing to do with atoning
for our sins or using the blood to wash
ourselves from sin. Thi s is a
misunderstanding by those of previous
generations: "It is not their meat nor
their blood that reaches Allah; it is your
piety that reaches Him." (Qur'an 22:37)
The symbolism is in the attitude - a
willingness to make sacrifices in our
lives in order to stay on the Straight
Path. Each of us makes small
sacrifices, giving up things that are fun
or important to us. A true Muslim, one
who submits his or herself completely to
the Lord, is willing to follow Allah's
commands completely and obediently.
It is this strength of heart, purity in faith,
and willing obedience that our Lord
desires from us.
hat else do Muslims do to celebrate
the holiday?
On the first morning of Eid al-Adha,
Muslims around the world attend
morning prayers at their local mosques.
Prayers are followed by visits with
family and friends, and the exchange of
greetings and gifts. At some point,
members of the family will visit a local
farm or otherwise will ma ke
arrangements for the slaughter of an
animal. The meat is distributed during
the days of the holiday or shortly
thereafter.

Amna Shams - Free lance journalist (NYC)

"The grass is also like me
As soon as it can raise its head
The lawnmower,
Obsessed with flattening it into velvet,
Mows it down again.
How you strive and endeavor
To level woman down too!
But neither the earth's not woman's
Desire to manifest life dies."

o wrot e Pakist ani poe t,

KishwarNaheed in her poem
"The Grass is Really Like Me."
The first time I read a piece by
KishwarNaheed, I was blown away.
Growing up as a Pakistani-American in
New York City, my nights were often
filled with vibrant discussions about life
and culture back home. I would hear
about hilarious shaadis and joyful Eid
celebrations. What touched me most
were the partition anecdotes friends
and family would pass between one
another. That trauma and subsequent
release told me more about the
Pakistani struggle than any show on
PTV ever could. My fascination with
Pakistani art quickly blossomed. Most
notably however, was my desire to read
more and more Urdu poetry.
What began with Faiz Ahmed Faiz
ended with Ahmad Faraz, andAllama
Iqbal soon became a favorite. Each
poet captured the struggle and richness
of Pakistani culture. I felt a connection
to my heritage that I had never felt
before, but there was something
missing. Where was my voice?
I grew up a feminist, strongly feeling
my life was in my own hands - a
sentiment echoed by my parents. And I
knew, contrary to popular belief, that
Pakistan had a steady and strong
feminist population ranging from
leaders to pop stars since its inception. I
just could not find evidence of it in
mainstream Pakistani discourse.
The question arose: how is one to
hold onto their cultural identity while
living abroad?
I realized the best way to keep my
roots alive was to shed light on its lesser
known feminist history, all of which
began before Pakistani independence
in 1947.
Stories of partition and
independence are rife with male
leaders and fighters, so much so that

ROSHNI Issue No.85

female activists roles take a step back in

telling the men's stories. From raising
awareness to setting up protests,
female activists were at the forefront of
the Pakistani independence
movement. One of the most notable
and pi o neer i ng fem i ni st s w as
Mohammad Ali Jinnah's sister, Fatima
Jinnah.
Fatima Jinnah was not only one of
the founders of Pakistan, she cofounded the Pakistan Women's
Association which did notable work in
helping the Pakistani population settle
post-partition. Her story is often told in
the shadow of her brother, but Jinnah
was a very strong spirit herself. In 1960,
she ran for president against the military
dictator Ayub Khan. She lost in highly
contested election despite having a
majority following. She became known
as Madr-e-Millat.
All Pakistan Women's Association
was co-founded by another prominent
feminist, Ra'anaLiaquat Ali Khan who
served at First Lady of Pakistan as well
as a stateswoman and was known as
Mader-e-Pakistan. During the Pakistan
Movement of the 1940s, Ra'ana
organized and mobilized students,
creating political awareness amongst
women. She remains to be a prominent
figure in Pakistani feminist discourse
even after her death.
The best way to understand a
culture is to understand its art.
Pakistan's richness and affinity for
language was celebrated in its poetry.
Feminist writers such as
KishwarNaheed and FahmidaRiaz bore
witness to the changing times and
attitudes. Their writing focused on
Pakistan's struggle not only through a
citizen's eyes, but through a woman's.
They discussed patriarchy, agency and
autonomy in l andmark pieces.
Pakistan went through some dramatic
changes, changes that did not fare well
for the women. Following a military
coup, Gen. Zia-ul-Haq came into power
in 1977. He implemented many
controversial policies including 1980's
Hudood Ordinance which asked rape
victims to present four eye-witnesses
for their claim to be accepted.Under Zia,
women were ordered to cover their
heads in public. Women's participation
in sports and the performing arts was
severely restricted and women's legal
testimony was given half the weight of a
man's.

Protests erupted all across the

country with members of APWA led by
Ra'ana spoke out against the policy.
The art reflected the turbulent times.
Riaz wrote her famous poem, "Chador
AurChaarDevari" in response to the
chador implementation.It asserts the
humanity of woman, her independence
and voice and her challenges tyrants.
Kishwar's "Hum Gun-a-gaarAuratein"
works similarly and has become a
woman's anthem amongst Pakistani
feminists.
Modern Pakistani feminist writers
share similar themes and discuss
familiar concepts. RafiaZakaria, an
attorney and author of "The Upstairs
Wife: An Intimate History of Pakistan"
discussed this legacy in a recent
interview with NPR.
"You know we have to be connected
to the women that came before us that
have modeled resilience, that have
modeled dignity in suffering and
modeled strength in suffering," she
said. "But then we also have to create
space for rebellion. We have to create
space for expressing what we want and
our needs and our ideas."
What we want is to honor Pakistani
women. We are their legacy. And it is
our job to keep it aliven

akistanis have high hopes. But

they also have deep fears.
By the time this write-up is
published, some fears would remain
no more-and some high hopes would
be dashed.
Fear about greater military
intervention in governmental affairs
would simply go away, because the
civilian leadership has owned, though
reluctantly, the ongoing Karachi
Operation and the military-backed
campaign again st corrupt ion.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar
inf ormed Pakistani nation on
September 10 that the unfinished
agenda of the National Action Plan
(drawn after the Dec 16, 2014
massacre of children at an army
public school) would be completed
soon. What lends credence to his
statement is that after flushing out
criminal elements from within the
ranks of political parties, particularly
in Sindh, the state machinery now
looks determined to track down
religious extremism at madaris or
religious seminaries. This was a very
difficult task but, thank God, it has
begun somehow. Madaris allegedly
involved in providing shelter to
terrorists have been sent notices to
clarify their position, and by way of
Geo tagging a constant vigil is being
kept on those madaris from where
sectarian strife can originate and
proliferate.
For last few weeks, National
Accountability Bureau, emboldened
by military backing, has been
registering cases of corruption
against PPP leaders and trying in
anti-terrorist courts some of them
already booked under different cases.
But now it has questioned the sitting
PML(N) Defence Minister Khawaja
Asif in a case related to corruption in a
power project. This signals that the
military backing to state institutions
for righting the wrongs is not directed
only against opposition parties.

government minister, is also being
pursued in an infamous graft case,
which if proved, can establish how
Sharif brothers used to buy political
support. This, too, has raised hopes
for an across-the-board
accountability of politician. But all
eyes are now set on whether the
killings of Pakistan Awami Tahreek's
14 workers last year would be
reopened and whether Shahbaz
Sharif, too, would be taken to task.
Target killing of two media persons, a
reporter and a satellite engineer,
preceded by attempt on life of MQM's
Rashid Godil have again instilled fear
in the hearts of many Karachiites. But,
on balance, Karachi remains much
more peaceful than it was in Zardari's
era. Two things continue to add to
public anxiety. First, the future of
MQM and second the future of
Karachi Operation. Most of
Karachiites think that the Karachi
Operation is progressing in the right
direction in eliminating politicallybacked criminal activities and
terrorism, at large. But they fear that if
MQM remains paralyzed, as it is as of
today, then that can offset the shortterm gains of the Karachi Operation
and result in a deeper political chaos
in future. Similarly, People seem
apparently happy with the immediate
gains that Operation has so far
achieved.
But they are also worried over
what would happen if, at any stage or
for any reason, it has to be rolled
back. Zardari and Bilawal-led PPP is
busy covering up the corruption cases
in the province whereas National
Accountability Bureau is out to catch
the party's bigwigs who had allegedly
remained involved in corruption.
This has discredited the party in
the eyes of the people. But the
dilemma is that there is no alternative
in sight. Rumors of an impending

and again by the federal government
and PPP too had reassured people
that under the amended 1973
constitution governor rule cannot be
"imposed" on a province and it can
only be administered with the consent
of the provincial assembly. But
effectively, the apex committee
composed of top civilian and rangers
military officers has made CM Sindh,
the head of the committee, ineffective
and is said to be calling shots in
Sindh.
How long this innovative system
can survive is uncertain. Politicians
demand more room for operating on
their own and military leadership is
sending silent but strong signals that
the establishment won't tolerate
corruption and nepotism in the name
of government-running by the elected
people.
A collision is out of question. But

in donating a a meat freezer and 215 pounds of halal meat to
Troys Unity House for use in preparing meals for the
homeless and others in need in the community.
Project was started in February of
2003 by a group of Islamic students
at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
in Troy. Over the years it has grown
to now have more than 150
volunteers serving between Albany
Schenectady and Troy. The group is
currently based in Latham, out of the
new Al-Hidaya Center on TroySchenectady Road.
In addition to Tuesdays major
donation, the volunteers have
arranged for the local Muslim
market, Duniya Supermarket at 688
New Loudon Rd. in Latham, to
regularly collect donations of halal
meat from its customers for the
Bethany Community Meals
Program.
Unity House is a Rensselaer
County-based human service
agency that serves meals to 150 to
200 people in the community each
day at no cost.
A dd i ti on al l y, Un i ty Ho us e
provides a wide range of services to
meet the needs of people in the
community who are hurting and
struggling. Programs assist those
who are living in poverty, adults living
with mental illness or HIV/AIDS,
victims of domestic violence, and
children with developmental delays.
The organizations goal is to achieve
social justice in the community and
to create a better understanding of
those it serves.
When customers come into
Duniya Supermarket to purchase
meat for their home, they will have
the option to donate extra to those
less fortunate. That meat will be kept

This isnt the first time that the
local organization has helped out in
Troy.

Bethany Community Meals Program
on the last Saturday of every month
and have been doing so for the past
year. They also staffed the program
on Christmas Day and Easter, which

Helping the hungry Local volunteers

help out with a much-needed donation
By Lauren Halligan

ROY, NY - Having a fully

stocked fridge is always a
nice feeling, especially when
its serving those who are hungry in
the community.
Members of the local Muslim
Soup Kitchen Project, who have
been volunteering regularly at Unity
Houses Bethany Community Meals
Program, and the Zakat Foundation,
an international charity with a goal of
addressing needs of the poor and
ensuring their self-reliance, joined
efforts Tuesday in donating a meat
freezer and 215 pounds of halal
meat to Troys Unity House for use in

preparing meals for the homeless

and others in need in the community.
The meat donated by the group
is halal, an Arabic word that means
permissible. In terms of food, it
means food that is permissible
according to Islamic law. For a meat
to be certified halal, it cannot be a
forbidden cut (such as meat from
hindquarters) or animal (such as
pork).
The special designated freezer
donated helps the Unity House
honor the Islamic practice of not
storing the halal meat with other
meats.

While all the meat donated and

to be donated in the future meets
these strict Islamic rules, it is meant
to feed everyone who comes to the
Unity House for meal s, not
exclusively those of the Islamic faith.
Officials at the Unity House
were extremely grateful for the
generous gift from the Muslim Soup
Kitchen Project on Tuesday.
Meat is very expensive, said
director of poverty services Christine
Nealon. Its helping us so much in
closing the food budget gap as well
as really paying close attention to the
cultural relativity of what people
come with and honoring that and
providing a higher level of dignity
because they will be able to get meat
within the faith tradition that they
practice.

Loss of legitimacy
Rasul Bakhsh Rais
ur elected governments are
fast entering the mid-term
part of their tenures. Nothing
appears to have changed. The
country and society continue to face
multiple crises. The only positive
change is success on the war on
terror and urban militancy, and I am
not sure how much credit the political
parties and leaders deserve for this.
On every important national issue, it is
once again a story of failures,
unwillingness to address the
structural issues, wrong priorities and
inability to reform governance.
The legitimacy or right to be in
power is measured both by the
electoral plurality of the party, and
more importantly, by its performance.
Electoral politics in the social and
cultural climate of Pakistan has
dynamics that dont easily lend to a
sensible explanation. The interplay of
caste, tribe, social standing of landowning classes and patronage
politics are some of the decisive
factors. Honesty, integrity, service to
the community, respect for law or
regard for public interest count the
least. The ruling groups that dominate
political parties and electoral politics
from one corner of the country to
another have similar social roots
they are products of agrarianfeudalistic social relations. The
persistence of old power structures is
the reason for the lack of any change
in the performance end of political
power. True, the rural and urban
middle class has expanded and
continues to be on the rise, but it has
yet to make its mark on the leadership
pattern in party politics.
All present governments in the
provinces and at the centre face a
legitimacy crisis though in varying
degrees. There is hardly any valid or
convincing defence of their many
failures ever since they have come

ROSHNI Issue No.85

into office. The biggest failure is in the

conduct of accountability of the
corrupt within the ranks of political
parties and sitting members of the
provincial and national assemblies.
The politics of reconciliation has a
very strange meaning in the media
and in the political narratives of
Pakistan. What it means is that the
two mainstream parties and their
close allies will not be subjected to
inquiries of corruption and with regard
to mega scandals of the past, present
and future. Together, they have not
allowed the institutions of law, justice
and accountability to function
independently. Their appropriation of
power over the police, the FIA, and to
some degree, NAB has turned the
rule of law and justice on its heads.
Some activation of
these agencies in
recent months on
their own or
through some
prodding from the
s e c u r i t y
establishment
raises the hope
that they will reestablish their writ.
That is not going to
be easy because
the ruling groups of
Pakistan have
made the legal and

dysfunctional.
The ruling
groups have lost
legitimacy for three
reasons: the chief
among them is
their systematic
corruption at
massive scales,

of, in the previous

have done this by crippling the rule of

law, which is the second reason. They
all stand above the law, and not under
it. At every step in the bureaucracy
and in every department of the
government where there is public
dealing, corruption, misuse of power
and decline of governance hit citizens
in the face. The hollow claims of doing
better hardly convince anyone.
Finally, the dynastic politics and
the multiple rings of cronies around
the ruling dynasties, keep the political
order closed, corrupt and crumbling.
Across the apparent political divide,
there is remarkable solidarity among
the ruling group that can be seen
through the politics of reconciliation.
Corrupt democrat s have no
legitimacy but the irony is they have
the numbers, the political power and
hold on institutions to stay put. The
widespread dissatisfaction is yet to
translate into an organised force for

ahore: Sonia Gandhi married

Rajiv because he was a
"han dsome yo ung ma n",
according to an account by former
Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid
Kasuri who cites a light- hearted quip
made by the Congress President.
Kasuri's meeting with Sonia in
2005 finds mention in his new book
'Neither A Hawk Nor A Dove' while
talking about then President Pervez
Musharraf's 2005 visit to India.
In the book, he remembers
receiving Sonia, the Congress Party
President, when she called on
Musharraf.
Sonia seemed rather reserved
when she came for the meeting,
Kasuri writes.
He says in the book that he
received her in the waiting room prior
to the meeting with the President. She
was accompanied by Natwar Singh.
"I thought I could cheer her up
and mentioned that while I was at
Cambridge, I remember strolling with
Sohail Iftikhar (son of Mian Iftikhar-udDin, who had been a prominent
Congress leader and a friend of both

Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal

Nehru).
"And seeing a handsome young
man walk from the opposite direction
on the Kings Parade. When I asked
Sohail who this young man was, he
whispered to me that his name was
Rajiv and that he was the grandson of
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru," Kasuri
writes.
"The moment Sonia heard me
refer to Rajiv as a handsome young
man, she broke into a broad smile and
said good humouredly, 'That is why I
married him'," Kasuri says.
Referring to another interesting
event during the 2005 visit, the former
foreign minister writes about the last
one-day match between India and
Pakistan in Delhi.
He says that "when we arrived at
the Ferozeshah Kotla Ground, Sonia
Gandhi and Foreign Minister Natwar
Singh were already present."
"A carnival atmosphere
prevailed in the stadium, with a fair
Pakistani presence loudly cheering
Shahid Afridi in full swing. I had the
odd feeling that his shots were aimed

in our direction. Foreign Minister

Singh light-heartedly commented,
'Aap Afridi ko bhee apnay sath hee lai
jaen' (Take Afridi back home with
you)," Kasuri writes.
He says that unlike the cheering
Pakistani crowd in the general stands,
the Indians and Pakistanis in their
enclosure were polite and restrained
in their reactions.
"As the match entered an
interesting stage, President Pervez
Musharraf expressed his desire to
delay leaving the stadium for his
me et i ng wi t h P ri me Mi n is t er
(Manmohan) Singh (who was sitting
next to him).
The President suggested to
Prime Minister Singh that they should
return to the stadium at the end of their
scheduled meeting at Hyderabad
House.
"Before long however, President
Musharraf and I received chits
informing us that the match had ended
earlier than anticipated, with Pakistan
not only winning the match hands
down but also clinching the series,"
