Introduction

Heat transfer is a science, which deals with the flow of heat from a higher temperature to
lower temperature. Heat cannot be stored and it is defined as the energy in transit due to the
difference in the temperatures of the hot and cold bodies. The study of heat transfer not only
explains how the heat energy transports but also predicts about the rate of heat transfer. When
a certain amount of water is evaporated or condensed, the amount of heat transferred in either
of the processes is same. However, the rate of heat transfer in both the cases may be different.
Heat transfer is an essential process throughout a number of residential, industrial and
commercial facilities. Some of the industrial applications of heat transfer are as followsChemical Processing
Cooling and heating of acids and caustic solutions
Cooling of highly-viscous products (e.g. latex)
Tempering and condensation of solvents (e.g. toluene)
Cooling and heating of all kind of pumpable chemical products
Condensation of exhaust vapours, steam and multiple-material mixtures
Evaporation systems for waste water and waste solutions
Metal processing
Cooling of cutting and grinding oil, Hydraulic oil
Tempering of drilling, milling, and planing emulsions
Cooling of oil/water quenching bath
Cooling of ingot mold and casting system
Cooling of coking plant/stripping water
Petrochemical Processing

Condensation of solvents and multiple-material mixtures

Cooling/heating of reactors and production containers
Cooling and heating of intermediate products
Cooling and heating of hydrocarbons
Heat recovery within petrochemical processes

Refrigeration
Condensation and Vaporization of refrigerants
Employment as economizer
Cooling of compressor oil
De-coupling of refrigeration from central refrigeration cycles

Cooling circuits

Heating and cooling of products

Heating and cooling of anodizing, degreasing, phosphating, chromium coating,

pickling, passivating, hot sealing, and painting batches
Wastewater Treatment

Separation of water-liquid solutions like ethanol/water
Wastewater evaporation and concentration from food cooking processes
Wastewater evaporation and concentration from animal byproduct treatment
Evaporation and concentration of coffee wastewater
Food Industries
For preservation, i.e. to kill bacteria and inactivate enzymes, such as the
pasteurisation of milk and the sterilisation of canned food
To develop taste and flavour, such as when cooking meats and vegetables, where in
addition to sterilisation heat is required to carry out physical changes to the food.
To develop the structure of the material, such as in baking of bread or biscuits,
where heating acts both to change the starch structure and function and also to
develop the bubble structure within the material
