COURSE DESCRIPTION:
ENG 102 focuses on writing the college-level research paper and
develops each students mastery of communication, information
literacy, and analytic skills with emphasis placed on research and
documentation methods. Students use writing, reading, listening, and
observations skills to understand, organize, receive, and convey
information. Using research gleaned from diverse sources, students
employ logic, reasoning, and analysis to craft effective essays.
PREREQUISITE:
Students must have successfully completed or tested out of ENG 101.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Address a question using an appropriate research strategy
2. Compose a coherent thesis that addresses an audience and
purpose appropriate to the writing task
3. Locate and critically evaluate information from written, oral,
graphic, mass media, and scholarly sources
4. Access and use information ethically and legally, employing the
appropriate format and documentation
5. Integrate research into an argument
6. Draw reasonable conclusions based on research
7. Write well-edited essays that show substantial attention to
organization and grammar.

ExpectationsofWrittenWork:
Student papers will be graded on their use of MLA style specifications, in
addition to content, organization, development, clarity, and style.
When discussing literature, students must use present tense and third
person point of view.
To receive a course grade of C, a student must complete three literary
analysis essays, and the research paper assignment, and achieve a C
grade average on these assignments.
Thefollowingcriteriaapplyinevaluationofwrittenwork:
Format:allwritingassignmentsmustfollowMLAconventions.Assignmentsaretyped,with
1margins,doublespacing,and12pointfont.AnMLAheading,pagenumbering,intext
citations,andaworkscitedpagearerequired(Hacker450).
ContentandOrganization:Essaysmusthaveanintroductionwithaclearlystatedthesis,
paragraphsthatbeginwithatopicsentencethatsupportsthethesis,bodyparagraphsthatare
unified,coherentandfullydeveloped,andaconclusionthatsummarizesandevaluatesthebody
paragraphs.Papersmustbeappropriatetotheassignment,addressallpartsoftheassignment,and
displayimaginativetreatmentofthesubject.
DevelopmentandUseofResearch/Analysis:Writingassignmentsmustciteacademicquality
primaryand/orsecondarysources,balancesources;userelevantexamples,evidence,quotesand
paraphrases;integrateparaphrasesandquotesclearlyandeffectively,documentevidencecorrectly
andthoroughlyusingMLAguidelines,andsupportgeneralizationswithspecificdetails
(examples,dates,etc).
UnityandCoherence:Anessaymustintroduceitslimitedsubjectandpurposeclearly,relateall
informationtothelimitedsubjectandappropriatetopic,usesmoothtransitionsandconclude
purposely.Quotesmustbesmoothlyintegrated.
Style/Mechanics:Essaysshouldbewritteninareadablestyle,withcleargrammaticalsentences,
andcorrectspellingandpunctuation.Avoiderrorsindictionandsyntax;followcorrectMLA
format.Nofragments,commasplicesorrunonsentences.
*Thiscoursewillreinforcethenatureofwritingasaprocessthatrequiresaseriesofsteps:
inventionstrategies,narrowingtopics,generatingideas,revisingandediting,andcomposing,

organizing,anddocumentingpapers.Allessayswillbewritteninaseriesofdrafts;finaldrafts
submittedwithoutpreliminarydraftswillnotbeacceptedorgraded.
Iwillreadyouressayscarefully,markgrammaticalandmechanicalerrors,andmakesuggestions
forimprovementincontentandstyle.Iwillnotmarkeveryerrororstylisticproblem.Youmust
assessyourownpaperinlightofmycomments.Toassistinyourrevisionprocess,Isuggestthat
youvisitthetutorsintheLearningLabormakeanappointmenttoseemeforhelp.

Attendance:Iwillexplainandillustratetheanalyticalandresearchstrategiesthatyou
willusetowriteyourpapers,soitisimportantthatyouattendclass.Youwillbeallowed
fiveabsencesforthisclass;onepointwillbedeductedfromyourattendancegrade(5
points)foreachabsence.Latenessorearlydepartureconstitutescut.Anystudentwho
isabsentsixtimesthroughoutthesemesterwillhavetheirfinalgradereducedanentire
letter.Anystudentexceedingsevenabsenceswillreceiveafailinggradeforthe
