CENTRE OF ENGLISH STUDIES
CENTRES PROFILE
DUBLIN 2010
Founded in 1979 Centre of English Studies is one of the oldest and most prominent English
language schools in Ireland. CES have two year round centres located in the very heart of
Dublin city on the same street as Trinity College, Christchurch Cathedral and Dublin Castle.
CES has an acknowledged worldwide reputation for academic excellence and we are one of
only 4 schools in Ireland to have been accepted as full EAQUALS members.
CES Dublin is also a founder-member of MEI and is accredited by ACELS and the Irish
Department of Education. We are also proud members of Dublin Tourism and the Dublin
Chamber of Commerce.
21st Century Dublin is a modern cosmopolitan city whose shops and restaurants reflect a
confident, multicultural city. Music, culture and art are everywhere. Throughout the year
there are hundreds of festivals and concerts to cater for all tastes. Areas such as Temple Bar
and Vicar Street are the "Latin Quarter" of Dublin and are always lively, with a huge
selection of restaurants, food and music from all over the world.
The young vibrant population of the city has a wonderful array of nightclubs, bars and cafes.
There is something in Dublin for all tastes. If you are interested in dance music or traditional
music there is always a place for you to go.
Dublin's galleries and museums are all within easy walking distance of each other. Merrion
Square, Fitzwilliam Square and the surrounding areas have examples of the best Georgian
architecture in Europe. Our city parks are wonderful places for a romantic stroll or just to
escape from the city for while.
Both our teaching centres are imposing buildings within the boundaries of medieval Dublin.
Dame Court has been renovated to the highest of international standards and its strong
bright colours make the classrooms and leisure areas fresh and vibrant, allowing you to feel
relaxed and comfortable at all times.
We have a total of 25 pristine classrooms, all with facilities for tape recorders, TV and video.
Our multi media centre has the most up-to-date technology and software with free
broadband internet access, Wi-Fi and personal laptop access points. A listening centre and
self access study library are available and a teacher is on duty every afternoon for advice
and guidance on additional study. We can also help you prepare for an exam in your own
country.
We at CES know that a comfortable environment
and caring staff are essential to effective language
learning.
Our CES CAFE provides light snacks and drinks. It is the ideal environment to stay and chat
to friends after a busy day and our leisure area with plasma screen TV provides up-to-date
news throughout the day plus a movie every afternoon.
December 2009 saw CES invest in another internet cafe in 31 Dame Street. We now have a
total of 26 computers available, all with free broadband internet access!
In 2007 CES was awarded the Language Travel Magazine Award for ‘Star English Language
School’ in Europe.
We were shortlisted for the same award again in
2008 & 2009. CES is the ONLY school in Dublin to
have either WON or been SHORTLISTED for these
awards!
One of the best ways to improve your English is by taking homestay accommodation. Our
homestays are all visited and checked by our Accommodation Officers and are chosen for
their friendliness and the warm welcome that each student is given. Homestays are located
close to our schools and to public transport links.
Breakfast is a light meal consisting of juice, cereal, toast or brown bread. Dinner usually
consists of soup, main dish of meat or fish and dessert. The main evening meal takes place
between 6pm and 7pm, which allows you to join our evening programme or to take part in
some sporting activity during the long summer evenings.
CES have two small year round residences that those students who do not wish to stay in home stay
can use. With a total of 22 beds in single en-suite, twin en-suite, double and standard rooms we can
cater for all needs and requirements. Each residence has a kitchen and communal dining area. All
have Wi-Fi access as well as satellite television. There are facilities to wash and dry clothes in both
residences.
Students taking accommodation in our residences must book an airport transfer as they need to be
shown in to their room and given sets of house keys etc. This will cost €65 one way.
During July and August and September the programmes are extended so you will have even
more choice of different things to do in the afternoons and evenings. The CES Programme
has become famous as we offer over 30 activities per week, all accompanied by our equally
famous
‘Yellow Shirts’
You will be given a detailed social and activity programme in your CES information pack
on your first day. If you do not wish to go on an activity you can relax in our students’
leisure room and watch a video or use the excellent facilities in our multimedia room.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS – Ireland & UK
The following is an outline of the terms and conditions for booking and payments for Agents and representatives
of Centre of English Studies. The purpose of this list is to outline our conditions clearly and concisely and thereby
avert misunderstandings. The Term “Agent” refers to any intermediary representing Centre of English Studies.
Any disputes relating to accounts or services provided will, where necessary, be heard in the courts in the
Republic of Ireland or the UK where the bulk of the service is carried out.
Enrolling on a Course
Where possible we ask that Agents complete the CES Registration Form. The CES Form requests information on
personal details, course, level, arrival information, transfer details and accommodation details. We would ask that
Agents complete this form or assist their clients to do so.
CES will then send Agents a fax or an e-mail indicating the price of the course and accommodation and any
additional services requested – with commission already deducted. The total invoice will show the amount due.
All payment must be received 2 weeks before the students’ arrival.
Payment Procedure UK
Enrolments are confirmed on receipt of a completed enrolment form and £100 deposit in part payment of fees.
The balance of fees is payable before the course begins. Payment may be made:-
• Banker’s cheque drawn on London and mailed to Centre of English Studies, 12 Stoke Abbott Road,
Worthing, West Sussex BN11 1HE, England.
Please ensure that the total amount sent is free of all charges from the remitting and beneficiary banks, and that
the student’s name is quoted on accompanying documents.
24
Please ensure when making a payment to include the invoice number and student name or number.
Commission
Individual Bookings – Commission is paid in two ways: 1) Nett invoice method or 2) Retrospective Commission
method. CES invoice the Agent, who is paid the gross price by the client and then pays the nett invoice fee to
CES. Commission is calculated on our Public Price List and is paid only on Tuition Fees for Adults, and on our
total packet price for Juniors.
Group Bookings – Special group rates are agreed with Agents by negotiation. It is important to note that should
this group not reach the number agreed upon, this will automatically invalidate the fee agreed and a sliding scale
will then apply. CES will provide this sliding scale upon receiving a group booking. CES requires a 20% deposit
on each group booking. Bookings will not be confirmed until the deposit or proof of transfer has been received by
CES. Important – Deposits must be paid by the end of March 2009. Balance must be received and in our bank
2 weeks prior to the groups arrival. Groups will be assigned to chosen centres on a first-come, deposit-paid
basis. Outstanding fees must be received by CES two weeks before the group arrives in Ireland or England.
Failure to meet the terms outlined can lead to cancellation. CES reserves the right to close bookings once we have
reached our quota in each Centre. All Dublin Junior Summer Centres are multinational.
Arrivals
Group quotes include one group transfer on arrival and one group transfer on departure. Where flights arriving
between 12midnight and 6am or delayed flights:- CES reserves the right to either hold students until 7am. Small
groups or individual students booked as part of a group and arriving separately to the group will be charged a
transfer fee. This will be invoiced to you.
Booking conditions
• We do not accept responsibility for costs incurred due to flight delays, i.e. accommodation etc.
• CES does not take responsibility for loss or theft of belongings.
• Students are expected to have appropriate medical and baggage insurance.
• There is no refund of fees for days missed during the course, or for late arrival or early departure, or for
public holidays.
• There is a fee of €15 (£15) on all payments made by bank transfer.
Pricing
CES requires Agents to submit their price lists.
Misrepresentation
It is the responsibility of Agents promoting CES to give a true and accurate description of our programmes. Any
such description must be submitted to the Marketing Department before printing. CES reserves the right to refuse
bookings from an Agent misrepresenting our courses.
Adult Groups
Dublin - Accommodation is half board Monday to Friday and full board at weekends. If full board
accommodation is required Monday to Friday, CES can arrange this at an additional cost of €40 per week.
UK – Groups attending CES in Wimbledon who wish to have a packed lunch will have to pay an additional £25
per person per week. Worthing is full board all week.
25
CES reserves the right to terminate the contract in the following circumstances :
• The unruly behaviour of a student.
• Vandalism by a student.
• The committing of a criminal offence on the part of a student.
• In circumstances where the accommodation and facilities offered by CES are unsuitable to the special
needs of a student.
• In circumstances where the behaviour and conduct of a student is such as to adversely affect the proper
administration of the School.
• Where a medical condition needing special medicine and care is not advised on the Registration Form or
when the booking is made.
Insurance
Students are not insured by the School, nor by the family, against illness, theft or loss of personal effects and the
School accepts no responsibility in the event of such occurrence. Personal insurance cover is therefore
recommended.
CES does not assume any liability for loss, delay or accident of any kind whatsoever which may occur due to the
fault or negligence of any company, hotel proprietor, campus, hostel or any other persons carrying out ancillary
arrangements.
Medical Insurance
CES can arrange private medical insurance on request for non-EU clients. We advise that all clients take out full
medical insurance prior to their arrival. CES/Swandean cannot be responsible for medical costs incurred if a
student does not specifically request medical insurance cover.
Adult Classes
Adult classes can take place at alternative premises other than our main teaching centres at peak times of the year.
Group Leaders
Group Leaders will be supplied with a Group Leader Handbook, which outlines their duties. It is important that
Group Leaders read this handbook carefully. Group Leaders are expected to attend at the centre each day and to
accompany their group on all social and cultural excursions and activities. Accommodation will be full board in
Dublin and Worthing and half board in Wimbledon. In the peak month of July it may not be possible to provide
single room accommodation for Group Leaders. It is not feasible for a Group Leader with a group at a Junior
suburban centre to attend an Adult / Teachers Course at the city centre Adult School. We advise all Group
Leaders to bring a mobile phone with them and to give this number to the centre principal in case of emergency.
The host-family phone is there for students to contact the Group Leader. The phone can be used in emergency
situations only.
Phone Calls
Due to the number of students who abuse the host-family trust, students can only make emergency phone calls
from the host-family telephone under supervision. Agents will be responsible for recouping costs of calls made
without permission.
26
Accommodation
It is important that Agents make special requests (no pets, vegetarian, etc.) on their initial booking. It is too late to
advise these requests after students have been placed. Where a number of special requests are made for one
student, CES reserve the right to fulfil what we feel to be the most important request. Agents should advise CES
of any special dietary needs, there will be an extra charge for students requesting a special diet.
Public Holidays

arranged to make up group lessons missed on public holidays and there is no refund of fees or credit given.
Please note there is no refund for clients who downgrade from Intensive to Standard Course during the first four
weeks of their stay. After the first four weeks the fee can be refunded through the Agent at the discretion of a
Director of CES.
Beginners arriving on dates other than the published start dates for beginners may have class in the afternoon or at
the lowest level operating at that time or must take individual tuition. It may be necessary for absolute beginners
to have one-to-one tuition until they reach a suitable level. Their group class fee will be off set against these
charges.
Cancellation
Cancellation Fee
Cancellation up to 14 days prior of the arrival date: €200 Ireland or £150 UK
Cancellation 7 days prior to commencement date or later: No refund

refund has to be made through the agency that booked the student.
Curtailment
These terms also apply to students who are part of a group. The cancellation fees will be waived if there is a
replacement student.
27
Visa
Where a visa has been refused on appeal, CES will refund fees to the Agent on receipt of evidence of the visa
refusal plus the refusal number. All fees which have been paid will be refunded less the deposit of €200 in Ireland
or £100 in The UK. Where refunds are made by bank transfer the bank charges will also be deducted from the
balance.
If the intended commencement date of an English Language Programme is delayed because of visa problems, the
full contracted language programme will be provided by CES and no refund will be made. Please note there will
be a readjustment of fees if the course does not take place in the calendar year.
If, for any reason, students make their own arrangements for further study in Ireland or UK, the contract between
CES and the student will be considered broken, and no refund will be made.
Expulsion
No refund.
Students should ensure that they have adequate insurance protection for the duration of their programme.

conditions are not met. All operators working with CES will be deemed to have agreed to these conditions
without variation once they have made a booking.

right not to accept applications.
