welcome to Ireland
Ireland, on the western edge of Europe, is a land famed for
its greenness and for its great variety of scenery. Ireland is a land
of myths and legends and ancient history mixed with the modern
and vibrant life of Ireland today.

Ireland was known as the “Celtic Tiger” because of the massive

economic growth over the last 15 years and is one of the world
leaders in high technology, pharmaceutical and airline industries.
Our International Financial Services Centre has allowed Ireland to
become a financial hub in Europe.

Irish people are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality,

which greatly contribute to the ease with which overseas students
Centre of English Studies | www.ces-schools.com

adapt to the Irish way of life. Ireland, a member of the EU since

1973, is a thoroughly modern nation and the high quality of our
education system is seen as one of the main contributors to our
economic growth.

We have a rich literary and musical tradition. Our colourful history

and culture have inspired such literary giants as WB Yeats, Oscar
Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and
many others. Contemporary writers and poets such as Roddy
Doyle, Paul Durcan, Frank McCourt, Maeve Binchy and Seamus
Heaney write about Ireland today while U2, Westlife, the Script
and the Chieftains are known worldwide for contemporary and
traditional music.

The Irish interest in sport is legendary. You can go golfing, sailing,

horseriding, play football and tennis. A great way to get to know
the Irish is to talk about sport and what is happening in the
sporting world.
04
welcome to England
England is a diverse country of history and culture.
Everyone knows something about England; its famous royal
family, footballers and its pop stars or tourist sights such
as Big Ben and the British Museum. Just think of the well
known images of black taxis and red double decker buses,
the works of Shakespeare and the prehistoric stone circles
such as Stonehenge, and this is only the start.

It is a land of contrasts - from exciting, cosmopolitan cities

like London and Manchester to picturesque villages in
the Cotswolds and Cornwall. There are also great areas
of natural beauty such as the Lake District, and cities of
learning and culture, like Oxford and Cambridge. For food
Centre of English Studies | www.ces-schools.com

and drink, enjoy a delicious afternoon tea or strawberries

and cream or a pint of beer in the local pub, or why not try
traditional fish and chips or a chicken tikka masala.

The English also love their sport, especially football, rugby

and that most English of all sports - cricket - which only an
Englishman can understand! Then, of course, you could
join the queue for the world’s most loved and famous
tournament of all - Wimbledon, the location of our London
school.

During your stay at CES we have a varied and exciting social and
activity programme that will not only allow you to mix with other
students but you will get the opportunity to explore the wonderful
city of London, learn about England, its people and most importantly
the English language.

welcomes these learners to all of our schools. During the

Junior English Language and Golf Programme

During July and August junior students can take an English
language and golf programme in Dublin. This programme
combines golf lessons, work with woods and irons and actual
practice on a course. Three golf professionals work with each
group and there will be a play-off on the final day for the CES
trophy.

24-hour care
Our staff are available throughout the day and the night as we
realise how important it is that parents know their children are with
caring and responsible people. Young students can be homesick,
get lost or need medical care at any time, so our staff are always
available and willing to help.

All our excursions are accompanied by CES leaders known as

‘Yellow Shirts’ (because of their clearly identifiable polo shirts)
and these leaders have been very carefully trained in dealing with
young people. They are selected for their warm manner and sense
of responsibility.

Dublin
Dublin is a lively, vibrant and modern capital city whose economic strength is reflected in
the wonderful rejuvenation of our city quays and the dock areas. It is one of the most
popular destinations for weekend tourists in Europe because it has everything for the
visitor, from ancient ruins to an active nightlife. We have a modern transport system which
allows easy access to all parts of the city so students can easily explore the city and the
seascapes of Dublin Bay.

21st Century Dublin is a modern cosmopolitan city whose shops and restaurants reflect a
confident, multicultural city. Music, culture and art are everywhere. Throughout the year
there are hundreds of festivals and concerts to cater for all tastes. Areas such as Temple Bar
and Vicar Street are the "Latin Quarter" of Dublin and are always lively, with a huge
selection of restaurants, food and music from all over the world.

The young vibrant population of the city has a wonderful array of nightclubs, bars and cafes.
There is something in Dublin for all tastes. If you are interested in dance music or traditional
music there is always a place for you to go.

Dublin's galleries and museums are all within easy walking distance of each other. Merrion
Square, Fitzwilliam Square and the surrounding areas have examples of the best Georgian
architecture in Europe. Our city parks are wonderful places for a romantic stroll or just to
escape from the city for while.

STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

HOME STAY ACCOMMODATION

One of the best ways to improve your English is by taking homestay accommodation. Our
homestays are all visited and checked by our Accommodation Officers and are chosen for
their friendliness and the warm welcome that each student is given. Homestays are located
close to our schools and to public transport links.

We will send you details of your homestay and

you must make contact with the office and your
homestay to confirm your flight number and
time of arrival. You will have breakfast and
evening meal in your home from Monday to
Friday and all your meals at the weekends. It is
advisable to bring your own towels and
toiletries.

Breakfast is a light meal consisting of juice, cereal, toast or brown bread. Dinner usually
consists of soup, main dish of meat or fish and dessert. The main evening meal takes place
between 6pm and 7pm, which allows you to join our evening programme or to take part in
some sporting activity during the long summer evenings.

CES RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION

Crestfield & Auburn House

CES have two small year round residences that those students who do not wish to stay in home stay
can use. With a total of 22 beds in single en-suite, twin en-suite, double and standard rooms we can
cater for all needs and requirements. Each residence has a kitchen and communal dining area. All
have Wi-Fi access as well as satellite television. There are facilities to wash and dry clothes in both
residences.

Students taking accommodation in our residences must book an airport transfer as they need to be
shown in to their room and given sets of house keys etc. This will cost €65 one way.

Experience the history and culture.

Throughout the year we organize a varied and

interesting social and cultural programme for all
our students. You will have the opportunity to
visit museums, historic cathedrals and castles or
just laze at the beach and chat to fellow students.
In the evenings we arrange visits to pubs, theatres
and dog racing.

During July and August and September the programmes are extended so you will have even
more choice of different things to do in the afternoons and evenings. The CES Programme
has become famous as we offer over 30 activities per week, all accompanied by our equally
famous
‘Yellow Shirts’

You will be given a detailed social and activity programme in your CES information pack

This course gives students the opportunity of living and learning more about the culture and social life in
England and in Ireland. Students can chose a 24 or 36 week stay and can start their course in either
England or Ireland. A return flight between England and Ireland is included in the fee.

Students can spend 12 weeks in London seeing all the celebrated sights and visiting the world famous
museums and art galleries. Then 12 weeks can be spent on the south coast of England in the picturesque
seaside town of Worthing. Here students can visit the famous Arundel Castle and Cathedral, which is

23
TERMS AND CONDITIONS – Ireland & UK
The following is an outline of the terms and conditions for booking and payments for Agents and representatives
of Centre of English Studies. The purpose of this list is to outline our conditions clearly and concisely and thereby
avert misunderstandings. The Term “Agent” refers to any intermediary representing Centre of English Studies.
Any disputes relating to accounts or services provided will, where necessary, be heard in the courts in the
Republic of Ireland or the UK where the bulk of the service is carried out.

Enrolling on a Course
Where possible we ask that Agents complete the CES Registration Form. The CES Form requests information on
personal details, course, level, arrival information, transfer details and accommodation details. We would ask that
Agents complete this form or assist their clients to do so.

Booking and Paying for a Course

Bookings are accepted in writing only, a 20% deposit is requested for all group bookings.
Individual Bookings should be made by fax or e-mail and an individual deposit of €200/ £100 transferred to the
CES bank account (please add €15/£15 bank charges).

CES will then send Agents a fax or an e-mail indicating the price of the course and accommodation and any
additional services requested – with commission already deducted. The total invoice will show the amount due.
All payment must be received 2 weeks before the students’ arrival.

Commission

Individual Bookings – Commission is paid in two ways: 1) Nett invoice method or 2) Retrospective Commission
method. CES invoice the Agent, who is paid the gross price by the client and then pays the nett invoice fee to
CES. Commission is calculated on our Public Price List and is paid only on Tuition Fees for Adults, and on our
total packet price for Juniors.

Retrospective Commission Method

Clients are invoiced for the gross amount, and commission is paid twice yearly to the Agent – at the end of May
and at the end of October. Commission is paid on Adult Tuition Fees and Junior Packet Price. Deposits must be
paid on clients booked by Agents on the retrospective method. The Agents details must be clearly marked on
each booking at the time of booking for commission purposes.

Group Bookings – Special group rates are agreed with Agents by negotiation. It is important to note that should
this group not reach the number agreed upon, this will automatically invalidate the fee agreed and a sliding scale
will then apply. CES will provide this sliding scale upon receiving a group booking. CES requires a 20% deposit
on each group booking. Bookings will not be confirmed until the deposit or proof of transfer has been received by
CES. Important – Deposits must be paid by the end of March 2009. Balance must be received and in our bank
2 weeks prior to the groups arrival. Groups will be assigned to chosen centres on a first-come, deposit-paid
basis. Outstanding fees must be received by CES two weeks before the group arrives in Ireland or England.
Failure to meet the terms outlined can lead to cancellation. CES reserves the right to close bookings once we have
reached our quota in each Centre. All Dublin Junior Summer Centres are multinational.

Arrivals
Group quotes include one group transfer on arrival and one group transfer on departure. Where flights arriving
between 12midnight and 6am or delayed flights:- CES reserves the right to either hold students until 7am. Small
groups or individual students booked as part of a group and arriving separately to the group will be charged a
transfer fee. This will be invoiced to you.

Booking conditions
• We do not accept responsibility for costs incurred due to flight delays, i.e. accommodation etc.
• CES does not take responsibility for loss or theft of belongings.
• Students are expected to have appropriate medical and baggage insurance.
• There is no refund of fees for days missed during the course, or for late arrival or early departure, or for
public holidays.
• There is a fee of €15 (£15) on all payments made by bank transfer.

Pricing
CES requires Agents to submit their price lists.

Misrepresentation
It is the responsibility of Agents promoting CES to give a true and accurate description of our programmes. Any
such description must be submitted to the Marketing Department before printing. CES reserves the right to refuse
bookings from an Agent misrepresenting our courses.

Adult Groups
Dublin - Accommodation is half board Monday to Friday and full board at weekends. If full board
accommodation is required Monday to Friday, CES can arrange this at an additional cost of €40 per week.
UK – Groups attending CES in Wimbledon who wish to have a packed lunch will have to pay an additional £25
per person per week. Worthing is full board all week.

25
CES reserves the right to terminate the contract in the following circumstances :
• The unruly behaviour of a student.
• Vandalism by a student.
• The committing of a criminal offence on the part of a student.
• In circumstances where the accommodation and facilities offered by CES are unsuitable to the special
needs of a student.
• In circumstances where the behaviour and conduct of a student is such as to adversely affect the proper
administration of the School.
• Where a medical condition needing special medicine and care is not advised on the Registration Form or
when the booking is made.

Insurance
Students are not insured by the School, nor by the family, against illness, theft or loss of personal effects and the
School accepts no responsibility in the event of such occurrence. Personal insurance cover is therefore
recommended.
CES does not assume any liability for loss, delay or accident of any kind whatsoever which may occur due to the
fault or negligence of any company, hotel proprietor, campus, hostel or any other persons carrying out ancillary
arrangements.

Medical Insurance
CES can arrange private medical insurance on request for non-EU clients. We advise that all clients take out full
medical insurance prior to their arrival. CES/Swandean cannot be responsible for medical costs incurred if a
student does not specifically request medical insurance cover.

Adult Classes
Adult classes can take place at alternative premises other than our main teaching centres at peak times of the year.

Junior Groups (Winter)

Where groups book mid-week to mid-week it may not be possible to provide classes on the Monday and Tuesday
of their last week. Additional tuition will be given in lieu of this during the afternoon period.

Group Leaders
Group Leaders will be supplied with a Group Leader Handbook, which outlines their duties. It is important that
Group Leaders read this handbook carefully. Group Leaders are expected to attend at the centre each day and to
accompany their group on all social and cultural excursions and activities. Accommodation will be full board in
Dublin and Worthing and half board in Wimbledon. In the peak month of July it may not be possible to provide
single room accommodation for Group Leaders. It is not feasible for a Group Leader with a group at a Junior
suburban centre to attend an Adult / Teachers Course at the city centre Adult School. We advise all Group
Leaders to bring a mobile phone with them and to give this number to the centre principal in case of emergency.
The host-family phone is there for students to contact the Group Leader. The phone can be used in emergency
situations only.

Phone Calls
Due to the number of students who abuse the host-family trust, students can only make emergency phone calls
from the host-family telephone under supervision. Agents will be responsible for recouping costs of calls made
without permission.

Text Books (Adults)

Text books are not included in our fee and cost approximately €32 Ireland/£22 UK. Agents who wish to include
the book must advise CES so that the cost of the book will be added to each invoice. Book rental may be
organised for groups only.

26
Accommodation

It is important that Agents make special requests (no pets, vegetarian, etc.) on their initial booking. It is too late to
advise these requests after students have been placed. Where a number of special requests are made for one
student, CES reserve the right to fulfil what we feel to be the most important request. Agents should advise CES
of any special dietary needs, there will be an extra charge for students requesting a special diet.

Public Holidays

CES will be closed on the following Public Holidays:

IRELAND – School closed on the following dates: 1st January, 17thMarch, 2nd and 5th April, 3rd May, 7th June,
2nd August, 25th October. Classes will finish for Christmas on 17th December 2010 until 3rd January 2011.

ENGLAND – School closed on the following dates: 1stJanuary, 2nd and 5thApril, 3rd & 31st May, 30th August.
Classes will finish for Christmas on 17th December 2010 until 3rd January 2011.

When public holidays occur on a Monday, students begin their course on Tuesday. No extra classes will be
arranged to make up group lessons missed on public holidays and there is no refund of fees or credit given.

Please note there is no refund for clients who downgrade from Intensive to Standard Course during the first four
weeks of their stay. After the first four weeks the fee can be refunded through the Agent at the discretion of a
Director of CES.

Beginners arriving on dates other than the published start dates for beginners may have class in the afternoon or at
the lowest level operating at that time or must take individual tuition. It may be necessary for absolute beginners
to have one-to-one tuition until they reach a suitable level. Their group class fee will be off set against these
charges.

Cancellation

Cancellations must be notified in writing.

Cancellation Fee
Cancellation up to 14 days prior of the arrival date: €200 Ireland or £150 UK
Cancellation 7 days prior to commencement date or later: No refund

Tuition fees can only be refunded in exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the School Directors. This
refund has to be made through the agency that booked the student.

Curtailment

There is no refund of fees for curtailment of a course after commencement.

These terms also apply to students who are part of a group. The cancellation fees will be waived if there is a
replacement student.

27
Visa

Where a visa has been refused on appeal, CES will refund fees to the Agent on receipt of evidence of the visa
refusal plus the refusal number. All fees which have been paid will be refunded less the deposit of €200 in Ireland
or £100 in The UK. Where refunds are made by bank transfer the bank charges will also be deducted from the
balance.

If the intended commencement date of an English Language Programme is delayed because of visa problems, the
full contracted language programme will be provided by CES and no refund will be made. Please note there will
be a readjustment of fees if the course does not take place in the calendar year.

Independent Course Selection Arrangements

If, for any reason, students make their own arrangements for further study in Ireland or UK, the contract between
CES and the student will be considered broken, and no refund will be made.

Expulsion
No refund.

Accident or Serious Illness

Students should ensure that they have adequate insurance protection for the duration of their programme.

General Conditions

CES/Swandean reserves the right to cancel all arrangements and bookings without prior notice if our payment
conditions are not met. All operators working with CES will be deemed to have agreed to these conditions
without variation once they have made a booking.

Legal Notice

CES reserve the right to alter and amend information contained in this handbook without notice. We reserve the
right not to accept applications.

Supplements

CES reserves the right, if necessary, to add a supplement for airport transfers and tours to all students and groups.

All prices are valid until 31st December 2010.
