and K. Coming soon in Vandy!

What goes in:

Plastic bags, since they are NOT recyclable.
You can leave unwanted trash bags here or
pick up plastic bags that you can use for
shopping, as trash bags, etc. At the end of the
semester, remaining plastic bags will be
brought to Stop & Shop.

Used Electronics > Technoscrap

Locations:
In the corner of the Computer Room (in
between entryways M and L), in the trash
room by entryway E.

What goes in:

old computers, CDs, DVDs, keyboards, mice,
printers, lithium & rechargeable batteries,
fluorescent lightbulbs (long & CFLs),
cellphones.

Clothing > YHHAP Clothing Bin

Location:
Laundry room in Saybrook (by entryway M),
by the dryers.

What is its purpose?

You can leave unwanted clothing in the
exchange bin. You can also sort through it
and keep any clothes you like. At the end of
each semester (or as needed), the remaining
clothes get donated to the Yale Hunger and
Homelessness Action Program.

Flat Cardboard Recycling

Location:
Trash rooms in Saybrook; in Vandy: by
the High Street gates (across from Skull
& Bones)

What is its purpose?

Where you recycle larger pieces of
cardboard. Flatten large boxes of
furniture, pizza, etc before putting them
away. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are
recycling boxes with food stains, you
can tear off the part of it without stains
and recycle that half. Boxes with more
than 5% stains CANNOT be recycled.

Your Foodprint
Meatless Mondays
On Mondays, we encourage
fellow students to not eat
meat or at least substitute
red meat for white white.
(Meat in general, especially
red meat, has a very high
carbon footprint.) This is
one small lifestyle change
that can have tremendous
effects if more people
participate!

Weigh Your Food Waste Night

For at least one meal every semester, the
Sustainability Committee collects data on the
food waste Saybrugians produce. The
information collected can help us plan ways
to decrease our foodprint. Additionally,
having such a public event usually
encourages people to finish all their food!

Energy/Water Consumption

Beware of vampire energy (click this

link)!
Unplug your electronics when theyre
not in use, especially during breaks.
Turn off your lights when youre not
using them!
When doing your laundry, always use
the BRIGHTS (see below) option. This
uses cold water (which can prevent
your clothes from shrinking!) and
ultimately saves energy.
Take shorter showers! Turn off the
water when youre shampooing, etc.

Heating systems > DEFINITELY READ

THIS
Unfortunately, summer is coming to
an end. The nights are getting
colder and Winter Is Coming (sorry,
couldnt help myself). So, here are a
few tips on how to use your heaters
and how to save energy (and so
you wont end up cold like these
cute puppies).

You should have a sticker

on your heater like the
one on the left that more
or less explains how it
works.

The gist of it: only use the white

knob and dont EVER touch the
valve.
During breaks, remember to turn
the white knob all the way to 1 or
2.
Keep your windows closed when
heaters are on!

$ Money-saving tips $
Water consumption
Studies have shown that up to 40% of all bottled water comes from tap water!
So, invest on reusable water bottles to save $$$! New Haven tap water is
delicious.

Laundry
Did you know that you can change the amount of time for the dryer? This can
save you a lot of $$$, especially if you are doing smaller loads. Another tip: if
you put a dry towel with your clothes in the dryer, your clothes will dry in a
shorter amount of time!

Click on 60
minutes to
change the
amount of time.

Food discounts
If you bring a reusable
cup to cafes like Blue
State, you can get a few
cents off your order!
Plus, a lot of libraries only
let you bring in secure
mugs/bottles like this!

If you bring a reusable

container to the Ay
Rubamba cart (and other
food carts on Science Hill!)
you can as much as 17%
off your order! (usually $1
off the $6 meal)

Join the club for free food!

The club often hosts study breaks and as a
member, you can help decide what kind of
food to get (and get first dibs)!
If you would like to be involved with Yales
sustainability initiatives, be in the company
of REALLY fun and creative people AND get
free food, then Saybrook Sustainability
Committee is the club FOR YOU!

We hope these images will inspire you

to make sustainable lifestyle choices!
