0 PROCEDURE
We are using HYSIS 8.6 software to solve the problem of separating ammonia and
water with the objective of understanding the usage of condenser, valve and separation
process. Firstly, all the input data of the material stream is added according to the
problem given.

Secondly, a cooler (E-100) is added to the system in accordance to the problem given.

Then, data for material stream 2 is inserted.

4.0 DISCUSSION

1. What is the temperature of the outlet stream of the condenser?

Considering the fact that The Peng-Robinson (PR) model was used, the Peng-Robinson (PR)
model most enhanced model in Aspen HYSYS with the largest applicability range in terms of T
and P. Thus in this experiment, a condenser is inserted into the circuit in accordance to the
experiment requirements. The temperature of the outlet stream of the condenser is 143.6 oC.
However the temperature is an error as the feed temperature is also 143.6 oC. Ideally, the
temperature should decrease as it enters a condenser. A condenser is a device or unit used to
condense a substance from its gaseous to its liquid state, by cooling it. In so doing, the latent heat
is given up by the substance, and will transfer to the condenser coolant. Condensers are typically
heat exchangers thus the exit temperature from the condenser should be less than the feed
temperature.
2. What are the mole fractions for ammonia and water in the vapour and liquid stream of the
separator?
In chemistry and chemical engineering, a separation process, or a separation technique, or simply
a separation, is a method to achieve any mass transfer phenomenon that converts a mixture of
substances into two or more distinct product mixtures (which may be referred to as fractions)For
the vapour stream, with the initial feed containing 80 wt% ammonia and 20 wt% water, the top
product from the distillation column or separator is having a mole fraction of ammonia of 0.8088
and 0.1912 of water because the main product that is aimed at is ammonia. Thus, bulk of the
solution is ammonia compared to water. For liquid stream (bottom part of separator), the
separator is having a mole fraction of water is 0.7980 and 0.2020 of ammonia because ammonia
is the desired product, so it is less in the bottom part of the separator.

3. Determine the mass flow rate for each outlet stream of the separator.
The Peng-Robinson (PR) model is ideal for VLE calculations as well as calculating
liquid densities for hydrocarbon systems. Several enhancements to the original PR model
were made to extend its range of applicability and to improve its predictions for some
non-ideal systems. In this, the mass flow rate is required. In physics and engineering,
mass flow rate is the mass of a substance which passes per unit of time. For this
experiment of separating ammonia and water, the process requires a separator. The
distillate output from the separator is 7.810e+004 kg/h. Meanwhile the mass flow rate for
the bottom of the distillate is 0.000 kg/h. There might be insufficient data, thus resulting
in an error of the bottom distillate.
