v Storage Management: Implementation Guide

Chapter 1. Prepare for Implementation
The solution illustrated in this IBM Solutions Builder Express Solution Starting Point consists of a storage
server with high reliability disks and high capacity tape storage. The hardware components are configured
with redundancy to provide high availability and the devices are configured with hot swap capability allow
for repair action without interruption to the system functions. With a proper backup policy, this
configuration can be added to any existing application environment and provides an easy to use two level
backup system.
This solution can provide highly reliable online backup which can be retrieved almost instantaneously,
and tape backup that can be stored at an off-site secured location for disaster recovery in case both
primary and backup data are lost on-site. Unlike traditional client backup and restore solutions that
typically automate the transfer of data from a client machine disk to a backup server, this solution
depends on an application to write the critical data to the storage system (through a transport such as
NFS, Windows(R) file shares, or other transport mechanism). The system involves a large shared file
system for multiple application servers to write their data and any data that is located on this shared file
server will be backed up.
This Solution Starting Point details the implementation steps for small and large configurations. A detailed
component list (Microsoft(R) Excel spreadsheet) and configuration diagrams (Microsoft PowerPoint file)
included with this Solution Starting Point give further details for each component required for these two
configurations.
Figure 1 below illustrates the runtime services needed to implement this solution.
Figure 1. Runtime Architecture

Figure 1 above depicts the Application Server (either already exists in customer's IT environment or can
be built at the same time as the Storage Server) that serves as the run time host of the customer's
application. It also contains the primary data storage that needs to be backed up. The Application Server
needs to write its data to the Storage Server through a transport mechanism such as NFS or Windows
File Shares in order to have a second copy on the Storage Server. Data on the Storage Server disk
storage devices is backed up to tape according to the backup policy.

Systems Architecture
An example operational architecture for this solution is shown in Figure 2 below. This diagram illustrates
the physical servers necessary to host the various runtime components. Systems outside of the dotted
line box are presumed to be an existing IT environment and are beyond the scope of this Solution
Starting Point. The Application Server is assumed to have its local data storage and copies the files to be
backed up to the Storage Server via transport such as NFS, Windows file shares, or other mechanism.

Preparing the Systems (Small and Large Configurations)
Preparing the systems for this Solution Starting Point involves installing tape and disk devices as well as
the device drivers.
The required operating system, Windows Storage Server 2003, is only available through an Original
Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) package and is pre-loaded on the IBM System x 3650.

Prepare x3650 Storage Device

The first two drives are already mirrored with Windows Storage Server 2003 installed by the OEM (36 GB
logical drive: drive C). Follow the steps after the figures to create a RAID level 5 array of 4 300GB
physical drives. When all the steps are completed, you will have created a 900GB logical drive (drive E).
The operating system is installed on drive C, the user data can be stored on the drive E, and the drive D
is assumed to be the DVD/CD drive. You may also choose to implement a RAID 5 array including 1 hot
spare drive which will provide a 600GB logical drive with increased drive availability in case of a failure.

Install and Configure TSM for Tape Backup
This section describes how to use the Windows Wizard for TSM to install and setup IBM Tivoli Storage
Manager Server and Client for backing up data to tapes.
Assumptions and Settings
The following is a list of the assumptions and pre-defined settings used by the Windows Wizard for TSM
during installation for tape backup.
System Configuration
● Windows Storage Server 2003 is used for the operating system.
● Both the TSM server and the TSM client are installed on the same machine.
● Two defined drives named C and E. The operating system is installed on the C drive and the user
data is stored on the E drive. For more information on how to set up these two drives, refer to
Prepare x3650 Storage Device on page 4.
Backup/Archive Policy Overview
This Solution Starting Point illustrates a default backup and recovery policy which meets the needs of
most customers. In this section, the background and general good practices in setting such a policy are
addressed. Depending on the specific needs of your customer, you may customize the policy using the
guidelines and suggestions below. One important aspect of a good backup policy is to include restoration
policy and procedures. You do not want to find out data on backup media is unusable after an event that
requires retrieving backup data. Therefore, testing of the restoration procedures and backup media needs
to be an integral part of a good backup and recovery policy.
There can be no hard and fast rules about backup strategy because every customer environment is
different. What really matters is to have a practical, relevant strategy that makes backup a daily routine for
the IT staff - a process that ensures backup always takes place and when it should. The solution
illustrated in this Solution Starting Point is a good start for establishing a robust backup and recovery
policy that works.
The solution illustrated in this Solution Starting Point addresses backup and recovery. However, the
configuration defined can also be used for data archival usage. So, what are the differences?
Backup is making copies of files originally stored on hard disks and is required to restore lost or damaged
files. Backup files are redundant copies and are not used as working copies. Backup files usually have a
limited life and are overwritten by newer files depending on the backup policy in place. A typical example
is back up a file server to tapes, with a weekly cycle where the tape data is overwritten every week with
new data.
Archiving is copying files for long-term storage and the files may not be a copy of some original but could
be the original itself. Archival data has a longer life cycle than backup data and the chance that it may be
kept safe for the entire life. Examples of archival storage are digital medical images or digital music files,
which have to be permanently stored or stored for as long as needed to be compliant with regulatory
requirements of what the business practice dictates.
There are basically two types of backups:
1. Full. Full backup takes a snapshot of all the data files that need to be backed up, regardless of if
they have been backed up previously or not.
2. Incremental. Incremental backups contain a copy of the files that have changed or added since
the previous backup. There are two types of incremental backups (since the last full backup, and
since the last incremental) and they vary by length and affect the backup and restore times.
Another key point to the backup and recovery policy is to maintain physical security of the backup media.
This includes securing the disk and tape storage system and media on-site and handling and storing tape
backup off-site.

23 Storage Management: Implementation Guide

The Backup Task
Windows Wizard for TSM executes the backup task in backup mode. With the backup mode, you can
define the backup frequency and number of versions. There is no guarantee how long backed up files will
be retained. If the file gets backed up multiple times, some older versions may expire.
Use the archive mode if you want to keep a file for a specific amount of time. Use the backup mode if you
want to keep a specific number of versions of the file.
Predefined Settings Used by the TSM Wizard
● Backup task is done with Backup mode.
● Backup is done five days a week, from Monday to Friday, at the time you specify.
● The entire drive that you designate will be backed up.
● The expiration date for the backed up data is set to 12 days.
TSM System Maintenance
● Sets the storage period for activity logs of the TSM server to 30 days.
● Sets the storage period for error logs and schedule logs of the TSM client to seven days.
Change from the Backup Mode to Archive Mode
The Windows Wizard for TSM provided with this Solution Starting Point sets up IBM Tivoli Storage
Manager in backup mode. You can define how long a copy of a specific file will be retained with the
archive mode. Archived files are useful if you want to take a snapshot of particular files or if you want to
delete files yet still have the ability to retrieve them if required. If you need to setup IBM Tivoli Storage
Manager in archive mode, perform the following steps:
1. Extract the contents of Windows-Wizard-for-TSM-Version1-2.zip file to a folder called
C:\Windows-Wizard-for-TSM-Version1-2.
2. Replace the contents of the following files:
● dsmadmc_configtape.txt and dsmadmc_scheduletape.txt files in the templates
folder
● tsmlanguage.properties file in the C:\Windows-Wizard-for-TSM-Version1-2
directory
With the contents of the following files located in the archive_mode folder (also in the
C:\Windows-Wizard-for-TSM-Version1-2 directory):
● archive_dsmadmc_configtape.txt
● archive_dsmadmc_scheduletape.txt
● archive_tsmlanguage.properties
If you need to switch back to backup mode, copy the contents of the following files in the backup_mode
folder:
● backup_dsmadmc_configtape.txt
● backup_dsmadmc_scheduletape.txt
● backup_tsmlanguage.properties
To replace the contents of:
● dsmadmc_configtape.txt
● dsmadmc_scheduletape.txt
● tsmlanguage.properties

24 Storage Management: Implementation Guide

respectively.

IMPORTANT: Do not change the name of the dsmadmc_configtape.txt,

dsmadmc_scheduletape.txt, and the tsmlanguage.properties files after changing the contents
of these files.

Important: You have completed the installation and configuration tasks for the solution. Continue to
Chapter 3. Implement the Solution Example on page 40.

39 Storage Management: Implementation Guide

Chapter 3. Implement the Solution Example
Now that you have setup the system, it can be integrated into your customer's network. After connecting
the system into the network, change the IP addresses on the storage server to match the customer
environment. Make sure that the necessary user IDs are added to the storage server so the application
servers can write to the disks that were setup in Chapter 2. Install and Configure Essential Solution
Software on page 8.
Since this system is used as a file serving system, it is essential that the access privileges are setup
properly. In order to set up correct access privileges, the user ID may be a unique user ID that the
application uses to write files to the shared drive. For instance, if a Picture and Archive Communication
Systems (PACS) were writing its medical images to this file system, a user ID would be created on the
storage server for the PACS application to store its images on this shared file system.
After the application has successfully written its data to the shared disks, manually schedule a backup to
occur and verify that a backup was taken of the files that were written to the disk to show the customer
that the system is working as designed.

have been restored successfully.

Use Case: Manage Tape Flow

Managing tape flow involves sending the tapes to an overflow location and sending tapes offsite. If you
have IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition V5.4, you can use the disaster-recovery function
called Disaster Recovery Manager (DRM) to track where offsite copies of data are stored. For more
information on DRM, refer to Disaster Recovery Manager on page 46.

Send Tapes to an Overflow Location

As the demand for media grows, the number of volumes needed for a storage pool may exceed the
physical capacity of a tape library or autoloader. To make room for new volumes while keeping track of
existing volumes, you can define a physical location as an overflow area. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager
tracks the volumes moved to the overflow area thus allowing you to make storage slots available for new
volumes.
You can perform the following steps to create an overflow location:
1. Create a volume overflow location.
Define or update the storage pool associated with the automated library by issuing the DEFINE
STGPOOL or UPDATE STGPOOL command with the OVERFLOW parameter. For example, to create
an overflow location named ROOM2948 for a storage pool named ARCHIVEPOOL, issue the
following:
update stgpool archivepool ovflocation=Room2948
2. Move media to the overflow location as required.
Issue the MOVE MEDIA command to move media from the library to the overflow location. Use
the DAYS parameter to specify the number of days that must elapse before the volume is eligible
for reuse. For example, to move all full volumes in the specified storage pool out of the library
with the days parameter set to 30 days:
move media * stgpool=archivepool days=30
All full volumes are checked out of the library, and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager records the
location of the volumes as Room2948.
3. Identify the empty scratch tapes in the overflow location to reuse.

42 Storage Management: Implementation Guide

The status of the volume change to the empty status after the number of days (specified in step 2
above) has been elapsed after the volume has been written or read.
For example, enter this command to query the media:
query media * stg=* whereovflocation=Room2948 wherestatus=empty
Enter this command all on one line to move the media:
move media * stg=* wherestate=mountablenotinlib
wherestatus=emptycmd="checkin libvol autolib &vol
status=scratch"cmdfilename=\storage\move\media\checkin.vols
4. Check in volumes from the overflow area when IBM Tivoli Storage Manager requests them.
Operators must check volumes in from the overflow area when IBM Tivoli Storage Manager
needs them. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager issues mount requests that include the location of the
volumes.
Operators can locate volumes in an overflow location by issuing the QUERY MEDIA command.
This command can also be used to generate commands. For example, you can issue a QUERY
MEDIA command to list the volumes in the overflow location, and at the same time generate the
commands to check those volumes into the library. For example, enter this command on one line:
query media format=cmd stgpool=archivepool
whereovflocation=Room2948cmd="checkin libvol autolib &vol
status=private"cmdfilename="\storage\move\media\checkin.vols"
Use the DAYS parameter to specify the number of days that must elapse before the volumes are
eligible for processing by the QUERY MEDIA command.
The file that contains the generated commands can be run using the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager
command. For this example, the file may look like this:
checkin libvol autolib TAPE13 status=private
checkin libvol autolib TAPE19 status=private

Send Tapes Offsite using MOVE DRMEDIA

Use the MOVE DRMEDIA command to keep track of different states of the volumes as they get shipped to
the offsite location. Note that you need IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition to use this function.
To take tapes to an offsite location for safekeeping, you need a backup of the primary storage pools. You
have to create a copy storage pool for all primary storage pools, and then back up your primary storage
pools to a copy storage pool. Finally you can send the copy storage pool volumes offsite.
1. Use the DEFINE STGPOOL command to create a copy pool storage pool, called COPYPOOL using
the device class defined for the LTO tape library, LTOCLASS1.
Define stgpool COPYPOOL LTOCLASS1 pooltype=copy access=readwrite
maxscratch=50
2. Specify the copy storage pool to be managed by Disaster Recovery Manager (a feature included
in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition V5.4
Set drmcopystgpool COPYPOOL
3. Use the SET DRMCOURIERNAME command to define the name of your courier company. The
default value is COURIER.
Set drmcouriername "My Courier Company"
4. Use the BACKUP STGPOOL command to backup any storage pools (i.e. DISKPOOL) to our
already defined copy storage pool (i.e. COPYPOOL).

43 Storage Management: Implementation Guide

Backup stgpool DISKPOOL COPYPOOL maxprocess=1 preview=no wait=no
5. Use the BACKUP DB command to backup the TSM database.
Backup db devclass=LTOCLASS1 type=full scratch=yes
6. Use the MOVE DRMEDIA command to move the database backup volumes plus the copy storage
pool volumes offsite. This command marks the volumes as state NOTMOUNTABLE since they are
no longer available in the tape library.
Move drmedia * wherestate=mountable remove=y
Use the QUERY ACTLOG command to check the status of the process. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager may
request you to manually export the media using the EXPORT function of the tape library and respond to
the message by using the request number.
For example, the message is:
001: Remove volume VOL001 R/W in slot element address 1 of library LTOLIB1
within 60 minutes; issue 'REPLY' along with the request ID when ready.
1. At this stage, the courier would arrive to collect the volumes. Once the volumes have been signed
over to the courier, indicate the state change to DRM by issuing the MOVE DRMEDIA command.
This command changes the state of the DR media volumes from NOTMOUNTABLE to COURIER.
Move drmedia * wherestate=NOTMOUNTABLE
2. When the vault confirms that the DR media have safely arrived, use the MOVE DRMEDIA
command to change the state of the DR media volumes to VAULT.
Move drmedia * wherestate=COURIER
3. The media is now safely offsite. Check the media status with the command QUERY DRMEDIA.
When the copy tapes are initially made, they are in state MOUNTABLE, meaning they are available to the
TSM server. After they are ejected from the library and are ready to be picked up for transport by the
courier, they transition to the NONMOUNTABLE state. Once picked up, they enter the COURIER state. After
being received at the vault site, they move to the VAULT state. They remain in this state until the data on
them expires or they are eligible for reclamation. At this state, the now-empty tapes are in
VAULTRETRIEVE state while waiting to return to the production site. While in transit, they are in
COURIERRETRIEVE state. On arrival back at the site, they change to ONSITERETRIEVE until they are re-
loaded to the tape library. At this time, they return to MOUNTABLE for re-use as scratch (empty) volumes.

Use Case: Recover From Disk Failure

Recovering from a single disk failure is a two step process. The first step is to replace the defunct drive,
and the second step is to regenerate the "Critical" logical drive back to an online or "Okay" state. If a Hot
Spare drive is configured, the hot spare drive takes over for a failed drive, and data from the failed drive is
reconstructed on the hot spare. When you replace the failed drive, data is copied back from the hot spare
to the new drive and the hot spare returns to Standby. You can replace the failed drive before
reconstruction is completed on the hot spare. However, copying the data back to the new drive will not
occur until the reconstruction has completed.
1. Remove the defunct drive and insert the replacement hard disk drive that is the same size and
secure the new drive.
● To locate the defunct physical drive on a System x 3650 Server using ServeRAID Manager,
right-click on the defunct drive and choose Identify Drive.
● To locate the defunct physical drive on a DS4200 Storage Device using DS4000 Storage
Manager, right-click on the defunct drive and choose Locate -> Drive.

44 Storage Management: Implementation Guide

This flashes the LED on the drive and makes it easier to locate the physical drive.
2. A solid amber drive LED indicator is on using System x 3650 Server or DS4000 Storage
Manager. While the system is powered on, identify the defunct physical drive to be replaced in
one of the following ways:
3. Within a few minutes, ServeRAID should detect the hot-swap event and, if a hot spare drive was
previously defined, data will be copied back from the hot spare to the new drive and the hot spare
returns to Standby.
4. Observe the drive for normal device startup behavior and LED activity:
● The replacement hard disk will spin up.
● The activity LED (green drive LED) should begin flashing and may eventually turn off or
become busy depending on the configuration.
● The solid Amber drive LED indicator should turn off.
Important: This concludes the description of the use cases for this solution. Proceed to Chapter 5.
Customize the Solution on page 46 to learn how you can adjust this solution to meet the specific needs of
your customer.

45 Storage Management: Implementation Guide

Chapter 5. Customize the Solution
When you are developing a solution to satisfy the customer requirements some form of customization is
usually involved. This section describes several possible customizations to extend this solution.

Disaster Recovery Manager

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition can automatically create a recovery plan - an up-to-date
text file with detailed recovery steps and automated scripts. This plan helps minimize recovery time from a
disaster that affects your data center. The disaster-recovery functions can also track where offsite copies
of data are stored. Disaster recovery planning should be considered as part of your site deployment.

Storage Area Network (SAN) Switches

The Large configuration can be extended to include Storage Area Network (SAN) switches to connect the
Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBA's) in the Storage Servers to attached Fibre Channel Storage. As
a way to grow the solution, SAN Switches allow other fibre channel devices to be connected to the
solution to allow future expansion and assist in managing the infrastructure. The configuration component
list (Microsoft Excel file provided with this Solution Starting Point) lists the IBM SAN10Q-2 SAN switches.
Figure 23 below shows the detailed Large configuration with the optional SAN switches.
Figure 23. Detailed Large Configuration with Optional SAN Switch

Figure 23 above shows the detailed Large configuration with the optional SAN switches.
Perform the following to connect SAN switches to the Large configuration:
1. Connect a fibre channel cable to port 0 of the Emulex 4GB PCIe dual port HBA. Connect the
other end to switch port 1 on the on one of the IBM SAN 10Q-2 SAN switches.
2. Connect port 2 of the IBM SAN 10Q-2 SAN switch to the DS4200 A controller.

46 Storage Management: Implementation Guide

3. Connect a fibre channel cable to the Emulex 4GB PCIe single port HBA. Connect the other end
to switch port 1 on the on the other IBM SAN 10Q-2 SAN switch.
4. Connect port 2 of the other IBM SAN 10Q-2 SAN switch to the DS4200 B controller.
5. On each switch, create a zone containing the Fibre Channel Adapter connected to the switch and
the ports that connect to the DS4200 controller. Each zone should contain 2 ports (port 1 and port
2).
6. Check connectivity to the DS4200 by running the DS4000 Storage Manager from the System x
3650 to ensure a successful connection.
See the IBM SAN 10Q-2 documentation for further information on creating zones on SAN switches.
