What say
the churches: the Catholic Church takes a firm stand against abortion and teaches that life
begins at conception. Some priests who are involved in the policy calling for the Pope to
excomulgue to Catholic politicians who are in favor of abortion. However, many Catholics
defend abortion and are calling for a liberalization. The Catholic Church in El Salvador is
totally against abortion. The Presbyterian Church USA said that 46% of their pastors "does
not believe that the Bible teaches that abortion is evil". The official position of this Church is
discreet. The sixteenth General Synod of the United Church of Christ decided that 'supports
the right of men and women to have adequate services for family planning and to count
among its options with the legal abortion practiced by qualified professionals'. The
Evangelical Lutheran Church said that abortion "should be seen as a last resort"; of all
forms, refuses to qualify the abortion of "sin" or to say that "life begins at conception.
Assembly should review the laws", said Funes on 25 August, Debunking the position as
the Director of the Institute of women (Isdemu), Julia Evelyn Martnez, who expressed
the commitment of El Salvador to review such legislation in the Brasilia consensus,
held in July this year.<br>The lawsuit in the Funes Government for unauthorized
statement from Director of Isdemu rose a debate between conservative organizations,
supported by the Catholic Church, who defend the absolute criminalization of abortion,
and feminist organizations requiring a review of the rules.<br>In the legislature,
however, no political party demanded nothing in this regard, despite the controversy.
The last event referred to the issue in the Parliament took place on the eve of the
presidential election, when the Foundation to life (against abortion) did that all political
parties, including members of the FMLN and the current Vice President, Salvador
Sanchez Ceren, sign a book in which are embodied a "commitment to life".
Always on issues related to the integrity of women, the Committee denounced "the
persistence of stereotypes and prejudices about the role of women in society", that
allows that, in practice, are recorded high levels of physical and sexual violence against
women.<br>"The State must investigate with all the means at its disposal acts of
violence against women, and especially to clarify the cases of murders of women,
identifying those responsible, bringing justice them and by imposing appropriate
sanctions", raises the resolution.<br>2.0 abortion seen in last three decades.<br>In the
last three decades, the abortion debate has been described as a conflict of rights: on
the one hand human rights of the unborn, and the reproductive rights of
women.<br>Induced abortion legislation has undergone changes in almost all
countries, with a general trend becoming less restrictive. Some countries that
previously only allowed abortion when it was necessary to save the woman's life, have
changed their framework legal to include eugenic, economic or social grounds and so
on. Currently almost two thirds of the world's population lives in countries whose
legislation admits abortion for various reasons, including the request of the woman;
While a small group of countries that make up 3% of the world's population forbid it
without admitting any cause of exception.<br>A report of the World Health Organization
considers that despite the significant increase of use of contraception in the last three
decades, it is estimated that 50-60 million abortions take place annually, about half in
unsafe circumstances.<br>At this time also born foundations like Yes to it, and the
Choose Life project, funada in the 90's, which, among other things, are against
abortion.
areas of the world where legal abortion is practiced<br>Abortion is legal in 117
countries, comprising 74 per cent of the world population, and is allowed in three
situations:<br>v fully legal: in 50 countries.<br>v Legal basis causes: in 14
countries.<br>v in selected cases: in 53 countries.<br>It is difficult to collect exact
figures, as the majority of Governments do not keep a record meticulously the number
of abortions that are performed. And in places where abortion is illegal, or are only
allowed in certain circumstances, only researchers can venture approximate figures.
Anyway, the world situation with regard to abortion is, more or less, as
follows:<br>United States abortion is the second most common surgery, after
tonsillectomy. More than one and half million abortions a year are performed. The vast
majority of women, four in five, are not married. Single women interrupted two times
more pregnancies which carried to term, while, on average, married women carried to
term ten times more pregnancies which interrupted.<br>In Latin America, abortion is
illegal, except Cuba and Puerto Rico. In other countries, abortion is punitive damages
unless the doctor gives his permission to put in risk the physical integrity of the mother,
by disease of the fetus, rape or precarious socio-economic status.
