During our 30-year plus involvement with minerals, fossils

and gems and promotion of knowledge about them, we have
come in contact either directly or through Friends with
Greeks abroad who are very active in this topic: Minerals ,
Gemstones and Fossils. We want to encourage all those
Greeks living abroad to invest in Greece . This is why
ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS will
continue to act as a link between all these Greeks around
the world and are active in this field . Our first aim to attract
the attention of young people to this Hobby and urge people
to be more observant in the filed , has been satisfactorily
achieved. In other words we "stimulated the interest 'of many
Greeks for minerals, fossils and gemstones. We think the time
has come for Greek Businessmen active on Earth Sciences
abroad to join us - through their participation - in this
consistent and continuous effort in Greece for the further
development of the Hobby on the collection and study of
Minerals, Fossils of and gemstones in Greece , supporting
thus and serving the Gemstone Industry.
We wish to thank our subscribers , exhibitors of GeMin, all
Friends and Partners in Greece and other countries who are
our oxygen and God who gives us the strength to continue.

In our over the thirty years of involvement with the Geology , we have repeatedly expressed the view that despite
the great development and connection of computers (Great help) in Geology, a correct observation in the field
remains even nowadays the main tool of the Geologist. So keep your eyes open to any peculiar formation made by
Earth.

Two more words on Opal

Opal is a mineral species with an amorphous structure. It's composition is silicon dioxide with a variable
amount of water. The amount of water (H2O) is usually between 2-10% by weight, although contents as
high as 20% have been recorded. When opals undergo dehydration as a result of exposure and time they
have a tendency to become crazed, showing minute cracks on the polished surfaces.
The Australian Gemstone Industry Council has established nomenclature and classification standards for
all types and origins of opals, This classification has been adopted internationally.
Opals can be classified into 2 basic categories:
Precious Opal : Any opal displaying play-of-colors. This phenomenon is caused by the diffraction of white
light thru a microscopic, orderly arrangement of silica spheres. This category includes white, black and
boulder opal. Precious opal can be further distinguished by types:
Type 1: A single, solid piece of precious opal, having a uniform appearance and composition. This is the
type of opal most commonly used for jewelry
Type 2:Precious opal that is attached to its host rock (a non-opal) in the form of a layer or seam. Boulder
opal is an example of this. The opal is attached to a brown, iron-stained sandstone.

A Boulder opal 34,5 carats , 25x18x5 mm - B Boulder Opal 20,5 carats

Type 3: Matrix opal occurs when precious opal fills cracks and openings in the host rock. The opal forms
in pre-existing clay or sandstone. This material is frequently dyed.
Doublets & Triplets: These assembled stones are not considered natural opals, although they do contain
a layer of natural opal.

Opal doublets : A. doublet 5,5 carats , 12x15x1,5 mm

B doublet 6 carats , 12x15x2 mm

Common Opal or Potch : These are varieties of opal that do not show a play-of-color. Although they share
the same chemical composition as precious opal, the silica spheres they contain are randomly arranged.

Opal triplets
To provide our readers an idea in regard to certain "secrets" of opal (any gemstone has its own "secrets")
we mention that the opal is beautiful and rare stone, but it is very sensitive to temperature, vibration,
etc. As a result of this sensitivity was the creation opal doublet and opal triplet .
What are the opal triplets? The structure of the opal triplet shown in the diagram above
At the base of the opal triplet is used onyx, on top of the onyx opal is placed and on top the whole
structure clear quartz is mounted . The quartz cap acts also as a magnifier to magnify and shows better
highlights of the colors of opal.Me With the evolution of the art synthetic opal is not easy sometimes to
distinguish between natural opal triplet and synthetic opal triplet.
