INTRODUCTION OF B-SCHOOLS

A graduate school offering study leading to a degree of Master in

Business Administration. A school in a university offering study
leading to degrees beyond the bachelor's degree.
One of the most difficult tasks an MBA aspirant faces is the selection
of institutes which he should apply to. The options are many and the
task seems Herculean.

Over the last few years, there has been a phenomenal increase in the
number of B-Schools across the country. There are the more than
1100 management institutes in India offering variety of Post Graduate
& Doctoral Programs in management. Many institutes also offer
Executive MBA programmes for working professionals.

Of these 1100 options, we need to narrow down our choice and

choose a few. A tough task indeed! The Institute Tracker aims to give
you all the necessary information to make a correct choice.

We have categorized the Top B-Schools into five grades- Crème, A+,
A, B+ & B. Categories have been assigned based on the statistics on
placements (foreign and domestic), salaries (highest, lowest and
average) & the number of students placed. The rest of institutes are
placed in the “Other Institutes” category.

Our categorization on the Institute Tracker is independent of B-

School surveys conducted by various bodies. A core committee of
IMS employees & associates has categorized institutes based on their
placement figures either sent in by the institutes based on their
placement figures either sent in by the institutes or collected during
our interactions with them.
Our students studying at various B-Schools have also given valuable
inputs in this exercise
The first step to seek admission globally for any MBA program is an
entrance test. A part from the test, institutes use various other
parameters to select students. In India there are multiple management
entrance tests (unlike Global standards where GMAT is the only test).
Further unlike the GMAT where student can apply for the test at any
time during the year, in India there are specific time lines of
application and a specific date for taking the test. The most important
tests in the country are held once in year. Therefore if you miss an
opportunity to apply in a particular year due to any reason you tend to
lose a year.

It is therefore extremely crucial that we do not miss an opportunity if

you are serious and understand the time lines of procuring a form and
submitting it to the concerned authority. This section therefore is
indispensable and gives you a complete picture of the tests, the
institutes that use the test for selection, the exact dates of application
and submission, procedure for application etc.

To enable you to understand the tests, INTRAC has classified these

tests in 3 broad categories-

1. National Test
These are the National level Entrance Tests whose scores are
accepted by the institutes allied to them. Thus by taking one
such test, you can apply to several B-Schools. CAT, XAT,
JMET, ATMA and MAT fall in this category.

2. Regional Test
These tests are for admission to institutes within a particular
state. For example, the Common Entrance Test(CET) & Gujarat
Common Test (GCET) is for admission into B-schools of
Maharashtra, and Gujarat respectively and so on. (These test are
conducted by the state government)
3. Institute Specific Test

Some institutes independently conduct their own tests for

admission to courses offered by them. For example, FMS, TISS,
MFC, IMT etc. These tests are exclusive to the institute that
conducts them (no other institute accepts their scores)

Generally when we think about MBA degree and its presentation the
thought that comes into our mind quite often is of B-School. (A
Business schools is known as a B-School)
One of the most difficult tasks an MBA aspirant faces is the selection
of institutes which he should apply to. The options are many and the
task seems Herculean

What most students require is compact and reliable information about

the plethora of institutes. Information which does not need an
extraordinary amount of time and resources together.

INTRODUCTION TO CAT (Common Admission Test)

This is a computer Adaptive Test that has to be cleared by candidates

willing to do MBA in the IIMs (Indian Institute for Management
studies), and in some of the other
Prestigious institutions that would accept CAT scores for admission

CAT, like several others must have told you, is one of the most
competitive exams. Also, it is the most unpredictable of all these tests.
Formula work and rote learning don’t help to a greater extent when
you are dealing with something like CAT. This makes the test
preparation interesting. CAT challenges your aptitude. And, there is
no better motivation than a challenge.
If there is something typically CAT-like, it is only ever changing test
structure. Consequently, you need to go beyond the mere
understanding of concepts and be well versed with the application of
the concepts as well. CAT questions are like the real life scenarios
where you required to interlink two seemingly unrelated concepts and
crack the problem.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research methodology is a science of studying how research is done

scientifically its important for the researcher not only to know the
techniques but also the methodology. So under research methodology
we will study the following.

1. Scope & need of the study.

2. Research Design

a) Sampling Design

b) Data design

3. Limitation of Study

1. Scope and need of the study

Whenever a study or a survey is conducted there has to be a

sound basis and logic for conducting such studies because these
studies take a lot of toll in terms of time, money and the effort. The
survey we have completed “RESEARCH ON EXPECTATIONS
FROM B-SCHOOLS IN INDIA”. This has been done because not a
lot of work has been done in regarding this field before.
2. Research Design

Decisions regarding what, when, where, how much, by

what means, concerning an inquiry constitute a research design. A
research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and
analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine the relevance to the
research purpose with economy in procedure.

3. Sampling Design

A sample design is a definite plan for obtaining a sample

from given population. It refers to the techniques the researcher would
adopt in selecting items from the sample. There are some elements of
sample design.

1. Sample Universe: All items in any field are considered a

universe or population. The Universe has to be clear.
Sample universe is Punjab.

2. Sampling Unit: Sampling Unit refers to individual,

state, village, and industry, Institution etc to be survey. In

this survey our sampling unit is respondents to Punjab.

3. Sampling Technique: In this survey Non Probability

Convenience Sampling method is used.

4. Sample Size: This refers to number of items selected

from a universe to constitute a sample. The survey has

been conducted on a sample size of 100.

4. Data Design

1. Nature of Data

The nature of data in this survey is primary and

secondary. Primary data are those which are
collected fresh and thus for the first time. They are
original in nature.

Secondary data are those which have

already been collected by someone else and which
have already been passed through the statistical
process.

2. Sources of Data

In the survey data are collected with by

questionnaire method. So all the basic methods in
bits and pieces are adopted.

3. Statistical Tools
The role of statistics in research is to function as a
tool in designing research, analyzing data and
drawing conclusions there from various statistical
tools.

4. Limitation of Study

1. Lack of Scientific Training: Researchers and even to

their guides, is mostly a scissor and paste job without any
insight shed on the collated materials, thus a systematic
study of research methodology is urgent necessity.

2. Insufficient interaction: There is insufficient interaction

between the university research departments on one side
and business establishments, govt departments on the side

3. Lack of Confidence: The concept of secrecy seems to be

sacrosanct to business organizations in the country so
much so that it proves an impermeable barrier to
researchers.

4. Biasness: Research studies overlapping one another are

undertaken quite often for want of adequate information.
Information provided is full of biasness.

5. In adequate and Untimely secretarial: Research faces

the difficulty of adequate and timely secretarial assistance,
including computer assistance. This cause unnecessary
delays in the completion of research studies.
