Tosimplifycomputationevenfurther,Eloproposedastraightforwardmethodofestimatingthevariablesin
hismodel(i.e.thetrueskillofeachplayer).Onecouldcalculaterelativelyeasily,fromtables,howmany
gamesaplayerwouldbeexpectedtowinbasedonacomparisonofhisratingtotheratingsofhis

wonfewerthanexpectedhisratingwouldbeadjusteddownward.Moreover,thatadjustmentwastobein

Fromamodernperspective,Elo'ssimplifyingassumptionsarenotnecessarybecausecomputingpoweris
inexpensiveandwidelyavailable.Moreover,evenwithinthesimplifiedmodel,moreefficientestimation
techniquesarewellknown.Severalpeople,mostnotablyMarkGlickman,haveproposedusingmore
sophisticatedstatisticalmachinerytoestimatethesamevariables.Ontheotherhand,thecomputational

ImplementingElo'sscheme
TheUSCFimplementedElo'ssuggestionsin1960,[4]andthesystemquicklygainedrecognitionasbeing

Federation(FIDE)in1970.ElodescribedhisworkinsomedetailinthebookTheRatingofChessplayers,

Subsequentstatisticaltestshavesuggestedthatchessperformanceisalmostcertainlynotdistributedasa
normaldistribution,asweakerplayershavegreaterwinningchancesthanElo'smodelpredicts."Whatisthe
elosystem"(http://tellyousomething.com/index.php/2015/07/08/whatistheelosystem/).Therefore,the
USCFandsomechesssitesuseaformulabasedonthelogisticdistribution.Significantstatisticalanomalies
havealsobeenfoundwhenusingthelogisticdistributioninchess.[5]FIDEcontinuestousetherating

Thenormalandlogisticdistributionpointsare,inaway,arbitrarypointsinaspectrumofdistributions
whichwouldworkwell.Inpractice,bothofthesedistributionsworkverywellforanumberofdifferent
games.

Differentratingssystems
Thephrase"Elorating"isoftenusedtomeanaplayer'schessratingascalculatedbyFIDE.However,this
usageisconfusingandmisleading,becauseElo'sgeneralideashavebeenadoptedbymanyorganizations,
