Handbook
for
the Students and the Counsellors

1. Overview
The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Programme under Distance Mode administered
through Directorate of Distance Education, The University of Burdwan aims at developing the
understanding and competencies required by practicing teachers for effective teaching-learning
process at the secondary education level. The programme also provides opportunities to enquire
skills essential for practicing teachers. It enables in-service teachers to select and organize
learning behaviour according to the needs of the learners.

The programme also provides

knowledge and develops educational understanding in educational technology, school


administration, school management and educational evaluation.

2. Objectives of the Programme:


The B. Ed. programme aims to enable practicing teachers to achieve the following
objectives:
i) To improve the skills and competencies.
ii) To develop knowledge and understanding of the various methods and approaches for effective
transaction of curriculum.
iii) To develop skills required in selecting and organizing behavioural objectives on learning
contents.
iv) To understand the psychology of learning.
v) To develop skills for analyzing learning contents for effective instructions.
vi) To acquire understanding of the various procedures and techniques of evaluation and their
applications in classroom.
vii) To develop competencies for organizing various activities and student support system.
viii) To develop an understanding about the prevailing socio-cultural system and environmental
situation.

3. Duration
The minimum duration of the programme is two years.
The rules & regulations of this programme will be notified later on.

4. Medium of Instruction
Bengali or English

5. Intake

The NCTE approved the basic unit of intake for B.Ed (ODL) programme of this University
shall be 500 students in a given session.

6. Eligibility
(a)

Candidates having Graduation or Post-Graduation Degree in Arts/Science/Commerce

or any other qualifications equivalent thereto with forty five per cent marks [as per NCTE (vide
th

point 5(2) and its subsequent amendment made in the 25

meeting of NCTE held on

23.03.2010)] are eligible to apply for the programme: Provided that the requirement of forty five
per cent marks shall not apply to persons appointed as teachers prior to the commencement of
the National Council for Teacher Education (Regulations Norms and Procedure), Second
Amendment Regulations, 30.3.2010 and Gazette Notification dt. 26.7.2010. There shall be
relaxation of 5% marks in favour of SC/ST and PWD (Persons with disabilities) categories

Minimum

two

years

full

time

teaching

experience

on

regular

basis

as

Primary/Graduate/Post Graduate teacher in a primary/Secondary/higher/senior secondary school


recognised by the respective Board of Primary/Secondary/Higher Secondary/CBSE/ICSE/
Directorate of Education or Central or State Government or Union Territory is required to apply for
the programme. The experience certificate should be issued by the Principal or Headmaster/
Headmistress only. The requisite teaching experience of two years must be completed on or
before the last date of submission of application as notified in the advertisement.

Experience

certificate must be enclosed at the time of submission of admission form.


(c)

The reservation for admission to B. Ed. Programme for SC/ST/OBC(Non-Creamy

Layer)/PWD and other categories shall be as per the rules of the Central Government.
Candidates, who are seeking reservation under any reserve category, must enclose attested
photocopy of the relevant certificates along with the application form.

7. General Information:
(i) The candidates have to download their Admission Form, Power Jyoti Bank Challan &
Handbook from the DDE website: http://www.buruniv.ac.in/dde.
(ii) The candidates should submit their application forms at the head quater of DDE, Burdwan
University.
(iii) Before submitting the application forms, candidates must ensure that they have
carefully and neatly entered their detailed information and the marks in different
columns of the form. Any overwriting or double writing should be avoided.
(iv) Candidates should also preferably use black / blue ball-point pen while filling the
application forms.
(v) No candidate needs to submit more than one application form.
(vi) Last date of submission of forms : 17.06.2014
(vii) Submission of application form by post should be avoided.

(viii) Admission shall be done at the DDE on the basis of the score obtained on the
teaching experience and academic result.
(xi) The candidates will be required to submit the filled-in application form with attested
copy of documents as specified in the Admission form.
(x) The final selection for admission will be made on the basis of the rank of the candidates in the
merit list.
(xi) Application forms shall be submitted on and from 03.06.2014 to 17.06.2014, only on
working days, at DDE, Burdwan University on payment of Rs. 500/- as the cost of
application form in cash at the time of submissions of forms.
(xii) At the time of admission selected candidates must produce all the testimonials in original.
(xiii) Dates of admission will be announced at the time of publication of
provisional list of candidates.
(xiv)The University also reserves the right to drop or include any name if any suppression
of facts on the part of the applicants or any mistake in the calculation of grade point is
detected at any stage after admission.

8. Selection Procedure :
Provisional Merit List along with Waiting List shall be prepared on the basis of their
approved length of service and the academic results. The Weight-age for preparation of Merit
List is as follows :

Provisional Merit List along with Waiting List will be published on 04.07.2014, and it
will be available in our website: http://www.buruniv.ac.in/dde . Merit list also be prepared on
the basis of available method subjects.

9. Programme Fee
(i) Rs. 25,000/- for the entire programme (Rs.12500/- is to be paid in each year).
(ii) Candidates seeking admission to the B.Ed. programme are advised not to pay the fee
along with the filled-in application form. Candidates will get a separate communication
about their admission and payment of fee.
(iii) The programme fee should be paid either by SBI Power Jyoti Account No. 32868998865
(from any SBI branch) for which students are require to pay service charge of Rs.50/- or by
Demand Draft drawn in favour of DDE, BU payable at the SBI, Golapbag, Burdwan.
(iv) Candidates should write in capital letters his/her name and the programme to whichadmission
is sought, i.e., B.Ed., on the back of the Demand Draft to ensure proper credit of his/her fee to the
relevant account.
(V) Rs.5000/- (Rs.2500/- in each year) is to be paid for Admission, Examinations,
Registration and others as per University rules.

12. Instructional System


The B. Ed. programme delivery system includes the approach of self instructional print
material, assignments, counselling / instructional sessions and practical work in school and
workshops.

13. Printed Material


The print materials are the self-instructional materials for both theory and practical
components of the programme. It will be supplied to the students in the form of modules. Each
module shall contain all the units of the respective paper. The candidates have to collect the
study materials from the DDE, B.U.

14. Assignments
Assignments are an integral and compulsory component of the instructional system.
There is only one assignment for each theory course. These assignments are to be submitted to
the DDE in accordance with the submission schedule to be provided separately in the programme
guide.

15. Counselling/Instructional

Sessions

Micro/Simulated

Generally the counselling/Instructional sessions will be held at the DDE during weekends
(Saturdays and Sundays) and long holidays. Within the general schedule of the programme, the
course-coordinator of the programme will decide on the conduct of these sessions. The coursecoordinators will also provide the counselling schedule. The counselling sessions will include
clarifications required in the print material.

16. Conduct of Practical


Practical will be held in the schools and teacher training colleges/institutions identified by
the DDE. The practical courses consist of school-based, workshop-based practical oriented
assignments and practice teaching. These activities will be conducted in the schools. Besides,
two practical workshops of 24 days duration, i.e., 12 days each spreading over 2 years, with
intensive face-to-face interaction to develop skills and competencies will also be organised at the
DDE or at any other suitable place. The student- teachers will have to do practical work and
various activities required for the development of teaching skills and competencies in the school
under the guidance of the Teacher-educator/Supervisor/Principal/Headmaster/Headmistress after
taking due permission from the school concerned.

17. Evaluation:
The system of evaluation, both for theory and practical work, is as follows:

If a student is failed to appear at any term-end examination for any reason, he/she may appear in
the subsequent term-end examination. This facility will be available until a student secures the
minimum pass mark, but only up to a period of four years from the date of registration.
The student will be declared successful if he/she scores at least 40% marks in theory courses
and 40% marks in practical courses separately.
