KODA Rapid Spaceback: KODAs Young

Compact Car
KODA Rapid Spaceback: The first KODA hatchback in the high-volume
compact segment
Design: Dynamic, fresh for younger customers
Typical KODA: Spaciousness, functionality, and Simply Clever features
Personalized: Panoramic glass roof and Spaceback rear window
Environment: Economical petrol and diesel engines with a record low
of 99 g/km CO2
Start: World premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, market
launch in Europe from October 2013
Mlad Boleslav, September/October 2013 The KODA Rapid Spaceback,
expands KODAs model range in the high-volume compact segment between
the KODA Fabia and the KODA Octavia. For the first time, KODA offers
a compact car which combines KODAs good practical qualities with the
hatchback shape. The KODA Rapid Spacebacks dynamically fresh design is
sure to please younger customers. As is typical of KODA, the Rapid Spaceback
offers a lot of space, numerous Simply Clever ideas, top safety, interesting
opportunities for customisation, low fuel consumption and excellent value.
The KODA Rapid Spacebacks roominess thus sets new standards in the
segment. Its launch in the European markets is scheduled from October 2013.
The new KODA Rapid Spaceback is a milestone for KODA: it means that we are
entering the strategically important segment of compact hatchback models, says KODA
CEO Winfried Vahland. The Rapid Spaceback is a great addition to this class in that it
combines KODAs good practical characteristics with the popular hatchback shape.
Sporting the new KODA design, the Rapid Spaceback has a fresh and dynamic
appearance. It is a compact car with a sporty chic, spacious and practical, ideal for young
people and families, says Vahland.
A sporty-fresh compact car with ample space
The KODA Rapid Spacebacks dynamic silhouette is marked by clear lines, dynamic
outlines and a distinctive interplay of light and shadow KODAs chief designer Jozef
Kaba and his team have done a great job. The new KODA Rapid Spaceback has
a clear, independent appearance with a special chic. It is a car that exudes sporty
freshness and dynamic elegance, making it attractive and appealing at first sight.
The KODA Rapid Spacebacks side view offers special accents. Compared with
conventional hatchback models, it appears sportier and more stretched.
This differentiates the vehicle from the competition, both optically and functionally.

The KODA Rapid Spacebacks dynamic silhouette is marked by clear lines, a long
wheelbase (2,602 millimetres), and a sharp, high tornado line. The Rapid Spaceback has
a C and a D pillar with a third side window. Together with the slender pillars,
the generous window areas create a light and friendly ambiance in the interior and
ensure excellent clarity.
Individualisation is a focus area in this vehicle: One of the highlights is the huge, optional
panoramic glass roof offering passengers an unobstructed view of the sky
and stretching from the windshield to the rear window. It is the largest glass roof ever
available in a KODA. Consequently, passengers benefit from ample light and a feeling
or air and space. The glass roof measures 1,713 1,155 millimetres and offers a viewing
space of 1,210 780 millimetres.
The Rapid Spacebacks panoramic roof appears even more attractive in combination
with the elongated rear window. The glazing area then extends all the way from
the windshield over the glass roof down to the tailgate. The black tinted, extended rear
window reaches roughly ten centimetres farther into the hatchback than the Rapid
Spacebacks regular rear window. These are the Rapid Spacebacks two distinct new style
elements giving it exclusive individuality.
The rear end emphasises the sporty character of the Rapid Spaceback. Its lines are crisp
and clear. A black diffuser element and the reflectors in the bumper underline
the horizontal orientation as well as the broad tail lights in brand-typical C design.
The centrally-placed brand logo is flanked by the KODA lettering on the left and the
RAPID model name on the right.
The KODA Rapid Spacebacks front design includes the characteristic Rapid elements:
a prominent grille with 19 vertical slats and a chrome frame, the KODA logo
on the rounded front end of the hood, the cloverleaf arrangement of the headlights and
fog lights. The Rapid Spaceback comes with an optional xenon package immediately from
market launch. This includes xenon headlamps as well as fog lamps with cornering light
function.
Spacious, attractive interior Simply Clever to the core
With its attractive combination of space, functionality, and design, the Rapid Spaceback
is a new offer in the compact car segment. This is a very spacious vehicle that represents
one of our brands key values, says Werner Eichhorn, KODA board member for sales
and marketing. As is typical of KODA, the Rapid Spacebacks interior sets a new
standard in its class, says Eichhorn. Though the exterior of the new Rapid Spaceback
measures 18 centimetres less than the Rapid limousine, passenger space is just as
generous as in the cars big brother: The rear of the Rapid Spaceback offers the largest
legroom (64 millimetres) and the largest headroom (980 millimetres) in its segment.

At 415 litres, or 1,380 litres when the rear seat is folded down, boot volumes are among
the best in the segment.
Numerous Simply Clever solutions complement this generous space: The new Rapid
Spaceback has a double cargo floor in the boot, which can divide the space into two
horizontal levels providing double utility. Furthermore, the Rapid Spaceback offers all
the practical features we are familiar with from the Rapid. This includes the ice scraper
in the centrally lockable fuel filler flap and holder for the warning vest under the driver
seat, the double-sided floor cover in the boot and the waste bin in the side door. Other
examples include a ticket holder, a multimedia holder, cup holders in the front and rear,
and the parcel shelf that can be stowed behind the rear seats.
The interior of the new Rapid Spaceback also boasts a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel,
stylish trim strips and freshly designed seat covers.
Safety without compromises
The new KODA Rapid Spaceback offers the high safety standards that have come to be
expected of KODA. A comprehensive safety package protects passengers in case
of an accident. This includes front, side and head airbags, height-adjustable three-point
safety belts with pre-tensioners in the front and height-adjustable head restraints. In EU
countries, the ABS (Antilock Braking System) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control)
systems are standard. Other active safety features are optional xenon headlights, tyre
pressure control, fog lamps with cornering function and the hill-hold control assistant.
The Rapid Spaceback is the first in the Rapid model series to be equipped with ColumnElectric Power Steering (C-EPS). Until now, the Rapid was equipped with electrohydraulic power steering. The electro-mechanical power steering is speed-dependent.
In the C-EPS, the drivers steering motions are supported by a program-controlled
electric servo motor on the steering column. The hydraulics unit that was used thus far,
as well as the servo-pump, hoses, and hydraulic fluid, are no longer needed. Some
of the key advantages include better steering behaviour, less weight and less required
space.
Four petrol, two diesel engines
In Europe, the new KODA Rapid Spaceback will be available with four petrol and two
diesel engines at market launch. These advanced power plants put out between 55 and
90 kW. The 66 kW 1.6 TDI celebrates its premiere in the Rapid model series with
the Rapid Spacebacks market launch and completes the current diesel engine 77 kW
1.6 TDI. In the GreenLine version with this engine, the Rapid Spaceback uses a mere
3.8 l per 100 km, CO2 emissions amounting to 99 g/km. And the 66 kW 1.6 TDI can also
be combined with automatic seven-speed DSG transmission. All TSI and TDI engines are
also available in the economical Green tec versions.

Four power trains are used for petrol engines. The three-cylinder 55 kW 1.2 MPI and two
four-cylinders 1.2 TSI (63 kW and 77 kW) are available with manual transmission.
The strongest petrol engine is the 90 kW 1.4 TSI, which is offered with a seven-speed
DGS transmission.
The largest model offensive in company history
The KODA Rapid Spaceback expands the brands offer in this class between the Fabia
and Octavia models. The KODA Rapid has been a success in the Indian market since
late 2011, and in the European markets for nearly a year. KODA recently started
building and selling the car in China as well. To date (31 August 2013), 83,300 Rapids
have been sold.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback is the latest innovation as part of the largest model
offensive in KODAs 118-year history. Over the coming years, the brand plans
to overhaul its entire model range and expand into additional segments. On average,
one new or re-engineered vehicle will be introduced to the market every six months.
This model offensive is the core of the KODA Growth Strategy 2018, by which year
KODA sales are to rise to at least 1.5 million per year.

The new KODA Rapid Spaceback: Distinct

Sporty Style
KODA Rapid Spaceback brings freshness to the compact class
First KODA hatchback model in the compact segment shows character
and style
Numerous options for customisation including a panoramic glass roof
and a longer rear window, new colours, eight wheel designs, three trim levels
Highest degree of precision, clarity, and quality
Mlad Boleslav, September/October 2013 The first KODA hatchback model
in the compact car class brings a breath of fresh air into one of the highestvolume car segments. The KODA Rapid Spacebacks dynamically fresh design
shows individual style, personality, and expressiveness. At the same time,
the newest representative of the KODA model offensive boasts ample space
and functionality.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback is a picture book KODA, combining KODAs strong suits:
space, functionality, and fresh design, says Frank Welsch, KODA board member
for technical development. With its individualisation options, this is a KODA
with a great deal of expressiveness.
Precision, clarity, quality combined with a high degree of functionality these are the key
features of KODAs new design language. We created the Rapid Spaceback as
a lifestyle hatch in the compact class, says KODA chief designer Jozef Kaba. From
the logo on the bonnet to the rear, the entire car shows consistent proportions, clearly
formed surfaces as well as sharp lines and radii. A clear focus on the essentials gives
the car its high value.
Compact hatchback model with plenty of expressiveness and dynamic
The expressiveness of KODA newest model is particularly evident in the side and rear
view. A dynamically contoured silhouette with its slender pillar units is drawn
in a sporty-stretched manner. This optical dynamic is enhanced by a long wheelbase
of 2,602 millimetres. A high, sharply modelled tornado line creates clear contrasts
between light and shadow surfaces. The new compact hatchback model is
4,304 millimetres long, 179 millimetres shorter than Rapid , and the resulting
significantly shorter rear overhang underlines its dynamic character.
The Rapid Spacebacks generously sized side windows are combined with very slender
pillars. This underscores the cars dynamic appearance and provides a great deal of light
in the interior, a generous sense of space, and excellent all-round visibility. In the side

view, the Rapid Spacebacks attractive wheels provide a sharp accent: Customers can
choose from a total of eight strikingly styled 14, 15, 16, and 17-inch steel and alloy rim
designs, including a special StylePLUS package 17-inch rim design.
Power and dynamic characterise the rear view as well. Clear lines define the rear,
intentionally underlining its horizontal appearance. Tail lights in brand-typical C design,
a black diffuser element, and triangles with a cubist touch on the right and left sides
of the tailgate all emphasise the cars width.
Currently the largest fixed glass roof in any KODA model, the panoramic glass roof is
available as an option. The glass roof measures 1,713 1,155 millimetres and offers
a viewing space of 1,210 780 millimetres, extending from the front to the rear window,
and offering occupants an unobstructed view of the sky. When needed, the glass roof can
be completely covered with two opposing blinds.
One of the Rapid Spacebacks distinguishing design elements is the optional elongated
rear window which is available in combination with the panoramic glass roof. The rear
windows tinted glass extends an additional ten centimetres into the tailgate compared
with the regular rear window.
Up to the B-pillar, the KODA Rapid Spacebacks front bears the same face
as the KODA Rapid. It impresses with its brilliance and optical width. The prominent
front grille with its 19 vertical ribs is chrome-framed marks the centrepiece. The bonnets
harmoniously rounded nose bears the newly designed KODA logo and slightly extends
into the grille. To the right and left, prominent headlamps and optional fog lights
characterise the front view.
The wide, sharply cut headlamps are available as xenon headlights. These are special
low-energy xenon lamps with a luminous flux of 2,000 lumens. This system requires
neither dynamic headlight levelling nor a headlamp cleaning device. Key advantages are
their lower price and reduced weight. These lamps can be ordered as part of a Xenon
Package, which also includes fog lamps with cornering function.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback is offered in a wide variety of colours. Four metallic
colours are new in the Rapid model series: Metal Grey, Rio Red, Race Blue, and Moon
White (available in early 2014). Other metallic colours include Brilliant Silver, Black Magic
with pearl effect, Denim Blue, Cappuccino Beige, and Rally Green. There are also four
solid colours: Candy White, Corrida Red, Pacific Blue, and Sprint Yellow.

Stylish interior, with a wide variety of customisations

In designing the interior, the KODA Rapid Spacebacks designers followed two key
guidelines: clarity and precision. A choice of high-quality materials and close attention
to detail creates a spacious interior that offers plenty of room for occupants.
The cockpit is clearly structured and organised. Everything is at its expected location.
The controls for various features are ergonomically designed and well within reach.
The designers deliberately emphasized the cockpits horizontal alignment, making
the interior appear more spacious.
All versions of the KODA Rapid Spaceback are equipped with attractive 3-spoke
steering wheels, which are adjustable in rake and reach. Depending on the trim level,
customers can choose from up to five different steering wheel options. The differences
are in materials used (PUR, PUR with chrome, leather with chrome) and features
(without controls or with multifunction display and radio or phone buttons).
The Ambition and Elegance high-value trim levels include an instrument panel with newly
designed trim strips in four designs, including Graphite Metallic, Silver Brushed, Piano
White and Piano Black. For these trim levels, newly developed seat covers are available
as well.
Customers looking for a particularly sporty interior may choose the Dynamic package.
This includes the small leather package with leather-covered gearshift and hand brake
lever, special sport seats in black-red or black-silver colour combination, pedals
with stainless steel caps, and Piano White trim lines (Piano Black up to calendar week
45/13).
The Interior package focuses on interior features. This package includes nets
on the inside of the front seats, a multimedia holder and a waste bin on the inside
of the doors.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback is available in three trim levels: Active, Ambition, and
Elegance. Furthermore, three interior colour combinations are available for the control
panel and door panels: Black/Black, Black/Grey, and Black/Beige.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback Active features a comprehensive safety package. In EU
countries, ABS and ESC, air bags for driver and front seat passenger, head and side
airbags, Isofix anchors in the rear, daytime running lights and five three-point safety
belts come as standard equipment. Comfort features on board include power steering,
central locking, and power windows in front. Customers can choose between 14 and 15inch steel rims.

The KODA Rapid Spaceback Elegance sits on 15-inch alloy wheels and comes
with a Chrome Package including chrome elements on the steering wheel, the air vents,
the gearshift, and the parking brake handle. The Elegance trim level also includes
the small leather package. The car has features such as a storage compartment
in the front centre armrest, fabric floor mats, power-adjustable, heated side-mirrors,
power front and rear windows, and the Blues stereo system as standard.
All trim levels can be enhanced with numerous additional elements. In addition to various
wheel designs, a number of electronic systems are available, such as cruise control, rear
parking assistant, tyre pressure control, hill-hold control and air conditioning (manual
or Climatronic).
Customers can choose either the Blues or the Swing stereo system for entertainment,
which both include a CD player. The dynamic Amundsen+ radio GPS system, which
includes a DAB feature, is available as an option.

Entry level : 66 kW 1.6 TDI diesel engine available for Rapid model series
GreenFuture: KODAs comprehensive sustainability strategy
Mlad Boleslav, September/October 2013 KODAs key corporate strategy
objectives include sustainability and environmental protection. KODA Rapid
Spaceback is available as a GreenLine version with 99 g CO2 emissions
per kilometre and Green tec version is on offer for five engines. In all, six
powerful and yet economical EU 5 engines are available for the Rapid
Spaceback, ranging from 55 kW to 90 kW. They include a new 1.6 TDI entrylevel diesel.
Customers can choose between four petrol and two diesel engines for the KODA Rapid
Spaceback. The new 66 kW entry-level diesel will be available as a particularly
economical GreenLine version. The Rapid Spaceback GreenLines CO2 emissions are
merely 99 g/km, and the car uses just 3.8 l/100 km.
GreenLine is KODAs term for the most economical model in a series, which also slightly
distinguishes itself visually from the other trim lines. The 66 kW 1.6 TDI KODA Rapid
Spaceback GreenLine is equipped with a start-stop system and brake energy
recuperation. The 15-inch steel rims are fitted with rolling-resistance-optimised tyres,
and aerodynamic modifications result in further fuel savings. A special front grille cover,
covered air intake vents, wheel covers, and an optional rear spoiler are all designed
to specifically reduce the cars drag. GreenLine plaques on the radiator grille and
the tailgate identify the version.
KODA GreenLine versions have been an integral part of the KODA model range
since 2008. They represent highest fuel-efficiency without the customer having to forego
comfort or performance. Thanks to specific engine management, technical and
aerodynamic modifications, KODAs GreenLine models are among the most economical
cars in their class. This involves not only optimising the engine, but also modifying
certain vehicle parameters.
Four petrol engines from 55 kW to 90 kW
With the exception of the entry-level engine, KODA Rapid Spaceback petrol engines are
direct-injection and turbocharged TSI engines. The three-cylinder 55 kW (75 hp)

... and two diesel engines from 66 kW to 77 kW
Rapid Spaceback customers opting for a diesel engine have a choice of two directinjection common rail versions, with a 66 kW (90 hp) 1.6 TDI making its first
appearance in the Rapid series. This engine can be equipped with either a manual fivespeed or a seven-speed automatic dual clutch transmission. CO2 emissions and fuel
consumption of the 66 kW 1.6 TDI average a combined 114 g/km and 4.4 l/100 km,
and values for the Green tec version are 3.9 l/100 km, 104 g CO2/km. The engine 66 kW
1.6 TDI is also available in combination with a seven-speed automatic dual clutch
transmission. Combined fuel consumption is 4.5 l/100 km, CO2 emissions are 118 g/km.
No Green tec is available for this version.
The most powerful 1.6 TDI version boasts 77 kW (105 hp). These engines are offered
with a manual five-speed transmission and emit 114 g CO2 pro km, using 4.4 l/100 km,
while the Green tec version requires a mere 3.9 l/100 km and emits 104 g CO2/km.
Five Green tec packages available
In addition, KODA offers economical, environmentally friendly Green tec packages
for five of six Rapid series engines. Green tec equipment packages are available
for nearly all engines in each KODA model series. Green tec is on offer in the new
KODA Rapid Spaceback and in the Rapid limousine for the 63 kW 1.2 TSI, 77 kW
1.2 TSI, and 90 kW 1.4 TSI as well as for both diesel engines. The system was designed
to lower the vehicles fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Thanks to Green tec
technologies, these models cut their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by four
to eleven per cent. These five Green tec versions have reduced CO2 emissions of between

104 g/km and 125 g/km and consume between 3.9 l/100 km and 5.4 l/100 km of fuel
combined. Green tec packages feature technologies that reduce fuel consumption, such
as a start-stop system, brake energy recuperation, and rolling-resistance-optimised
tyres.

GreenFuture: KODAs comprehensive sustainability strategy

Whether Green tec or GreenLine comprehensive improvements in fuel consumption
and emissions in KODA cars are part of KODAs broad sustainability strategy.
To increase sustainability efforts, KODA has created an overarching GreenFuture
strategy, which aims to further reduce fuel consumption and increase sustainability in all
KODA models. GreenFuture is an integral part of KODAs Growth Strategy 2018
and the Volkswagen Groups environmental strategy.
GreenProduct represents KODAs commitment to further reduce average CO2emissions in all models. Currently, the company offers 81 KODA models with emissions
under 120 g CO2/km, including eleven under 100 g CO2/km. The strategy also focuses
on production processes. KODA aims to make its production 25 per cent more
environmentally-friendly by 2018. GreenFactory primarily looks at parameters such as
energy and water consumption or waste production per manufactured vehicle. The third
pillar of KODAs sustainability strategy is GreenRetail, which focuses on environmental
protection in dealerships and garages.

KODA Rapid Spaceback: Spacious and practical

Maximum interior space with compact external dimensions
Outstanding marks in terms of space for rear passengers
KODA Rapid Spaceback offers many Simply Clever solutions
Mlad Boleslav, September/October 2013 The new KODA Rapid Spaceback
impresses in terms of space and everyday practicality with many Simply Clever
solutions. KODAs new offering combines all the good and practical KODA
qualities and the hatchback shape in a compact car. This means excellent space
utilization within compact external dimensions and new benchmarks for rear
passengers and boot volume. Customers get a lot of car for their money:
a sporty chic, dynamic as well as practical, family-friendly vehicle with all
typical KODA values.
The new KODA Rapid Spaceback is the new standard for spaciousness and functionality
in the compact hatchback class, says Frank Welsch, KODA board member for technical
development. Our developers and product designers have come up with smart vehicle
solutions that make our customers lives with the car as easy as possible. They have
created an extremely spacious and clever car that looks good in any situation, says
Welsch.
Maximum space utilization in a compact body
The KODA Rapid Spaceback impresses with lots of room for the entire family. With its
compact external dimensions of only 4.30 metres long, 1.71 metres wide and
1.46 metres high, the interior space for passengers is as spacious as in the Rapid. This
optimal utilization of the interior is made possible by, among other things, the vehicles
long wheelbase of over 2.60 metres. The rear passengers therefore enjoy the best knee
room (64 millimetres) and the best head room (980 millimetres) in this class. The rear
headroom is even eight millimetres more than in the Rapid limousine and sets yet
another new benchmark.
The boot of the new Rapid Spaceback also features lots of room, with a capacity
of 415 litres. Loading the boot is extremely easy due to the height of the boot opening
(841 millimetres) and low loading sill (677 millimetres). With the rear seats folded down,
maximum boot volume increases to 1.380 litres. The rear safety belts can be secured
to the side with a narrow belt receptacle to ensure they are not in the way when
the seats fold down - another Simply Clever feature. Lowering the armrest in the rear
seats makes it possible to transport longer objects.
KODA Simply Clever this statement is a reality in each of the brands vehicles.
It is also true of the KODA Rapid Spaceback. One example is the optional double cargo
floor, permitting the boot to be divided into two horizontal levels. To secure it
in the upper position, the floor is slid into mounting brackets on the sides, providing
double utility in the boot. The cargo floor can also be secured in a sloping position while
in the upper position for easier loading and unloading. Simple idea, maximum effect:

to use the cargo area without dividing it, simply move the floor into its lowest position.
If needed, the rear parcel shelf can be stored vertically behind the rear seats.
Furthermore, the KODA Rapid Spaceback offers all of the Rapid limousines clever
solutions. There is a holder for the warning vest under the drivers seat. A waste
comparment in the side door ensures order and cleanliness in the cars interior. The
ice scraper in the fuel filler flap is a standard feature in the Rapid Spaceback as well.
It is easily stored in its holder in the fuel tank lid, which is automatically locked by the
cars central lock system. The KODA Rapid Spaceback also features a double-sided
floor cover for the cargo area. One side is a high-quality carpet for normal use,
the other is a dirt- and water-repelling surface. Simply flip the cover over when
transporting dirty objects in the cargo area.
Other practical solutions concern storage compartments and hooks. The cargo area
features two bag hooks, storage compartments (on the sides behind the wheel houses)
and illumination in the boot. An optional package is available for the cargo area.
It features a flexible storage compartment and the net programme.
No millimetre is wasted in the passenger compartment. A multimedia holder
in the centre console cup holder can hold a mobile phone, iPod or other small mobile
device. The large storage compartments in both front doors feature beverage holders
that can hold one 1.5 litre PET bottle each. There is also a beverage holder for a 1.5 litre
PET bottle in the back of the centre console. The storage compartments in both rear
doors can hold one 0.5 litre PET bottle. The armrest in the rear seats can be used
as a convenient storage compartment or a secure beverage holder. No more looking
for parking tickets as they have their place in the ticket holder in the A pillar
on the drivers side. From the Ambition package on up, options include storage nets
on the inner edges of the front seats as well as storage bags (standard starting
with the Ambition package) on the backs of the front seats.

On the safe side with the

KODA Rapid Spaceback
New compact offers comprehensive active and passive safety package
The KODA Rapid Spaceback performed similarly in tests to the Rapid, which
received a 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP
ABS, ESC and six airbags standard in EU countries
KODA Rapid model series now with xenon headlights
Mlad Boleslav, September/October 2013 As with every KODA, the new
Rapid Spaceback offers safety without compromises. Just like the Rapid,
the Rapid Spaceback is one of the safest vehicles in its class.
When it comes to active vehicle safety the KODA Rapid Spaceback impresses with its
extensive safety features. Its ABS (anti-lock brake system) and ESC (electronic stability
control) systems are standard features in EU countries. ABS prevents the wheels
from locking up under hard braking. ESC issues commands to the braking system and
the engine control to reduce the risk of spinning in extreme situations.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback is optionally available with xenon headlights (25 watts),
which are special low energy xenon bulbs with a luminous flux of 2,000 lumen. Because
of the special low energy design, the system does not require an automatic headlight
levelling or headlamp cleaning system, resulting in a lower price and a reduction
in weight compared to xenon headlights with a higher luminous flux.
Additional systems that increase safety are available as options. They include fog lights
with a corner function where turning the steering wheel left or right will turn
the corresponding fog light on to illuminate the direction in which the car is turning.
Tyre pressure monitoring warns the driver both acoustically and visually if tyre
pressure is low.
Hill-hold control (HHC) is a practical safety system allowing the car to start up a hill
without the risk of its rolling backward. With the function turned on, the driver does not
need to use the hand brake as it will be automatically activated for approximately two
seconds on an incline of more than five per cent. Both systems (tyre pressure monitoring
and hill hold control) are available as part of the optional ESC Plus safety package.
The KODA Rapid Spacebacks stable handling is crucial to the cars active safety.
In addition to the large wheelbase and the stiff body structure, the light chassis is
the basis for the cars outstanding driving performance. The front axle features
McPherson strut front suspension with torsion stabiliser, while the rear wheels are
attached to a compound link crank-axle.

The new Rapid Spaceback is equipped with so-called C-EPS (column-electric power
steering), in which a program-controlled electric servo motor on the steering column
assists the driver in steering the vehicle. The system only activates when the driver
actually needs steering assistance. One advantage over a hydraulic power steering is
lower fuel consumption.
High passive safety
In the event of a collision, the passengers of the new KODA Rapid Spaceback are
protected by various systems, which work together to reduce the risk of injury
to the driver and passengers. The car features a total of up to six airbags. Two head
airbags cover the entire surface area of the side window, deploying from inside the roof
lining in front of the side window. Two side airbags protect the driver and front
passengers pelvis and chest in the event of a collision. The driver and front passenger
airbags protect the occupants in a head-on collision. The front passenger airbag can be
deactivated if there is a baby in a rear-facing child restraint in the front seat.
In the event of an accident, all of the passengers are protected by three-point safety
belts. The safety belts for the front seats are height-adjustable and have belt tensioners.
The belt tensioners will tighten the seat belts within milliseconds. Belt force limiters
reduce the force of the seat belt on passengers chests. An audible safety belt reminder
will chime if the driver and passenger do not fasten their safety belts. For child safety,
Isofix car seats can be secured in the rear seats with Isofix anchorages and Top Tether
straps, which attach child safety seats securely to the car.
The Euro NCAP top score is an independent confirmation of the high safety level
in the KODA Rapid Spaceback.

New: GreenLine version with a fuel

consumption of just 3.8 litres and CO2
emissions of 99 g/km for the KODA Rapid
Engine range expanded to include 66 kW 1.6 TDI diesel engine
New features for the KODA Rapid and optimised chassis
Fresh interior with three-spoke steering wheels, decorative trims, seat covers
and additional design innovations
KODA Rapid now available with xenon headlights
Mlad Boleslav, September/October 2013 With the launch of the new KODA
Rapid Spaceback, the KODA Rapid has also received a range of innovations,
one of them a 66 kW 1.6 TDI diesel engine. The interior of the Rapid has also
been revised with new three-spoke steering wheels, decorative trims and seat
covers and additional design adjustments. Xenon headlights are available
upon request.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback and the KODA Rapid will be available with a 66 kW
1.6 TDI diesel engine in the especially fuel efficient GreenLine version with CO2
emissions of 99 g/km and fuel consumption of 3.8 l/100 km. The new diesel engine
with manual transmission is also available as an environmentally friendly Green tec
version, which features fuel consumption reducing technologies such as the automatic
start-stop system, brake energy recuperation and low-rolling resistance tyres. CO2
emissions of the Rapid 66 kW 1.6 TDI Green tec engine amounts to just 104 g/km,
with a combined fuel consumption of 3.9 l/100 km.
The new 1.6 TDI diesel engine with 66 kW (90 hp) is the latest addition to the
engine choices for the KODA Rapid and KODA Rapid Spaceback. The engine works
with common rail direct fuel injection, is equipped with a diesel particle filter and comes
with a choice of an automatic 7-gear dual-clutch transmission or a manual five-gear
transmission. The CO2 emissions and combined-cycle fuel consumption of the manual
66 kW 1.6 TDI engine are 114 g/km and 4.4 l/100 km, respectively.
Overall, six different EU 5 engines are now available for the KODA Rapid: two diesel
(1.6 TDI with 66 kW or 77 kW) and four petrol engines (1.2 MPI/55 kW, 1.2 TSI
with 63 kW or 77 kW and the 90 kW 1.4 TSI). The Green tec package is available for all
TSI and TDI engines.
The suspension in the Rapid has been improved. The cars interior has also been
enhanced including new 3-spoke steering wheels. The differences are in the materials
(PUR, PUR with chrome, leather with chrome) as well as in the functionalities
(with or without any multi-functional display/phone/audio control buttons).

Besides the Rapid Spaceback, the Rapid now also comes with C-EPS (column-electric
power steering). Hitherto, the Rapid was equipped with electro-hydraulic power
steering. In C-EPS, a program-controlled electric servo motor on the steering column
assists the driver in steering the vehicle, eliminating the requirement for a hydraulic unit
with a servo pump and hydraulic fluid line. The advantages include better steering
behaviour, lower weight and less bulk.
The Rapid Ambition and Elegance equipment versions now feature new decorative
trims, each in four designs (Graphite Metallic, Silver Brushed, Piano White and Piano
Black). There are also new seat cover designs for these versions. The Active and
Ambition equipment versions feature a darker grey for the dashboard and door panels.
Other innovations include a new faceplate for the Swing radio and chrome-framed
control buttons for the Blues radio.
The KODA Rapid is available with optional xenon headlights. And there are three new
exterior colours for the Rapid: Metal Grey, Rio Red and Race Blue. Metallic Moon White
will also be available at the beginning of 2014. The car continues to be available
in the following metallic colours: Brilliant Silver, Black Magic with pearl effect, Denim
Blue, Cappuccino Beige and Rally Green. There are also four solid shades: Candy White,
Corrida Red, Pacific Blue and Sprint Yellow.
