The KODA Rapid Spacebacks dynamic silhouette is marked by clear lines, a long
wheelbase (2,602 millimetres), and a sharp, high tornado line. The Rapid Spaceback has
a C and a D pillar with a third side window. Together with the slender pillars,
the generous window areas create a light and friendly ambiance in the interior and
ensure excellent clarity.
Individualisation is a focus area in this vehicle: One of the highlights is the huge, optional
panoramic glass roof offering passengers an unobstructed view of the sky
and stretching from the windshield to the rear window. It is the largest glass roof ever
available in a KODA. Consequently, passengers benefit from ample light and a feeling
or air and space. The glass roof measures 1,713 1,155 millimetres and offers a viewing
space of 1,210 780 millimetres.
The Rapid Spacebacks panoramic roof appears even more attractive in combination
with the elongated rear window. The glazing area then extends all the way from
the windshield over the glass roof down to the tailgate. The black tinted, extended rear
window reaches roughly ten centimetres farther into the hatchback than the Rapid
Spacebacks regular rear window. These are the Rapid Spacebacks two distinct new style
elements giving it exclusive individuality.
The rear end emphasises the sporty character of the Rapid Spaceback. Its lines are crisp
and clear. A black diffuser element and the reflectors in the bumper underline
the horizontal orientation as well as the broad tail lights in brand-typical C design.
The centrally-placed brand logo is flanked by the KODA lettering on the left and the
RAPID model name on the right.
The KODA Rapid Spacebacks front design includes the characteristic Rapid elements:
a prominent grille with 19 vertical slats and a chrome frame, the KODA logo
on the rounded front end of the hood, the cloverleaf arrangement of the headlights and
fog lights. The Rapid Spaceback comes with an optional xenon package immediately from
market launch. This includes xenon headlamps as well as fog lamps with cornering light
function.
Spacious, attractive interior Simply Clever to the core
With its attractive combination of space, functionality, and design, the Rapid Spaceback
is a new offer in the compact car segment. This is a very spacious vehicle that represents
one of our brands key values, says Werner Eichhorn, KODA board member for sales
and marketing. As is typical of KODA, the Rapid Spacebacks interior sets a new
standard in its class, says Eichhorn. Though the exterior of the new Rapid Spaceback
measures 18 centimetres less than the Rapid limousine, passenger space is just as
generous as in the cars big brother: The rear of the Rapid Spaceback offers the largest
legroom (64 millimetres) and the largest headroom (980 millimetres) in its segment.
Press Release,
At 415 litres, or 1,380 litres when the rear seat is folded down, boot volumes are among
the best in the segment.
Numerous Simply Clever solutions complement this generous space: The new Rapid
Spaceback has a double cargo floor in the boot, which can divide the space into two
horizontal levels providing double utility. Furthermore, the Rapid Spaceback offers all
the practical features we are familiar with from the Rapid. This includes the ice scraper
in the centrally lockable fuel filler flap and holder for the warning vest under the driver
seat, the double-sided floor cover in the boot and the waste bin in the side door. Other
examples include a ticket holder, a multimedia holder, cup holders in the front and rear,
and the parcel shelf that can be stowed behind the rear seats.
The interior of the new Rapid Spaceback also boasts a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel,
stylish trim strips and freshly designed seat covers.
Safety without compromises
The new KODA Rapid Spaceback offers the high safety standards that have come to be
expected of KODA. A comprehensive safety package protects passengers in case
of an accident. This includes front, side and head airbags, height-adjustable three-point
safety belts with pre-tensioners in the front and height-adjustable head restraints. In EU
countries, the ABS (Antilock Braking System) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control)
systems are standard. Other active safety features are optional xenon headlights, tyre
pressure control, fog lamps with cornering function and the hill-hold control assistant.
The Rapid Spaceback is the first in the Rapid model series to be equipped with ColumnElectric Power Steering (C-EPS). Until now, the Rapid was equipped with electrohydraulic power steering. The electro-mechanical power steering is speed-dependent.
In the C-EPS, the drivers steering motions are supported by a program-controlled
electric servo motor on the steering column. The hydraulics unit that was used thus far,
as well as the servo-pump, hoses, and hydraulic fluid, are no longer needed. Some
of the key advantages include better steering behaviour, less weight and less required
space.
Four petrol, two diesel engines
In Europe, the new KODA Rapid Spaceback will be available with four petrol and two
diesel engines at market launch. These advanced power plants put out between 55 and
90 kW. The 66 kW 1.6 TDI celebrates its premiere in the Rapid model series with
the Rapid Spacebacks market launch and completes the current diesel engine 77 kW
1.6 TDI. In the GreenLine version with this engine, the Rapid Spaceback uses a mere
3.8 l per 100 km, CO2 emissions amounting to 99 g/km. And the 66 kW 1.6 TDI can also
be combined with automatic seven-speed DSG transmission. All TSI and TDI engines are
also available in the economical Green tec versions.
Press Release,
Four power trains are used for petrol engines. The three-cylinder 55 kW 1.2 MPI and two
four-cylinders 1.2 TSI (63 kW and 77 kW) are available with manual transmission.
The strongest petrol engine is the 90 kW 1.4 TSI, which is offered with a seven-speed
DGS transmission.
The largest model offensive in company history
The KODA Rapid Spaceback expands the brands offer in this class between the Fabia
and Octavia models. The KODA Rapid has been a success in the Indian market since
late 2011, and in the European markets for nearly a year. KODA recently started
building and selling the car in China as well. To date (31 August 2013), 83,300 Rapids
have been sold.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback is the latest innovation as part of the largest model
offensive in KODAs 118-year history. Over the coming years, the brand plans
to overhaul its entire model range and expand into additional segments. On average,
one new or re-engineered vehicle will be introduced to the market every six months.
This model offensive is the core of the KODA Growth Strategy 2018, by which year
KODA sales are to rise to at least 1.5 million per year.

view, the Rapid Spacebacks attractive wheels provide a sharp accent: Customers can
choose from a total of eight strikingly styled 14, 15, 16, and 17-inch steel and alloy rim
designs, including a special StylePLUS package 17-inch rim design.
Power and dynamic characterise the rear view as well. Clear lines define the rear,
intentionally underlining its horizontal appearance. Tail lights in brand-typical C design,
a black diffuser element, and triangles with a cubist touch on the right and left sides
of the tailgate all emphasise the cars width.
Currently the largest fixed glass roof in any KODA model, the panoramic glass roof is
available as an option. The glass roof measures 1,713 1,155 millimetres and offers
a viewing space of 1,210 780 millimetres, extending from the front to the rear window,
and offering occupants an unobstructed view of the sky. When needed, the glass roof can
be completely covered with two opposing blinds.
One of the Rapid Spacebacks distinguishing design elements is the optional elongated
rear window which is available in combination with the panoramic glass roof. The rear
windows tinted glass extends an additional ten centimetres into the tailgate compared
with the regular rear window.
Up to the B-pillar, the KODA Rapid Spacebacks front bears the same face
as the KODA Rapid. It impresses with its brilliance and optical width. The prominent
front grille with its 19 vertical ribs is chrome-framed marks the centrepiece. The bonnets
harmoniously rounded nose bears the newly designed KODA logo and slightly extends
into the grille. To the right and left, prominent headlamps and optional fog lights
characterise the front view.
The wide, sharply cut headlamps are available as xenon headlights. These are special
low-energy xenon lamps with a luminous flux of 2,000 lumens. This system requires
neither dynamic headlight levelling nor a headlamp cleaning device. Key advantages are
their lower price and reduced weight. These lamps can be ordered as part of a Xenon
Package, which also includes fog lamps with cornering function.
The KODA Rapid Spaceback is offered in a wide variety of colours. Four metallic
colours are new in the Rapid model series: Metal Grey, Rio Red, Race Blue, and Moon
White (available in early 2014). Other metallic colours include Brilliant Silver, Black Magic
with pearl effect, Denim Blue, Cappuccino Beige, and Rally Green. There are also four
solid colours: Candy White, Corrida Red, Pacific Blue, and Sprint Yellow.

wheel designs, a number of electronic systems are available, such as cruise control, rear
parking assistant, tyre pressure control, hill-hold control and air conditioning (manual
or Climatronic).
Customers can choose either the Blues or the Swing stereo system for entertainment,
which both include a CD player. The dynamic Amundsen+ radio GPS system, which
includes a DAB feature, is available as an option.

to use the cargo area without dividing it, simply move the floor into its lowest position.
If needed, the rear parcel shelf can be stored vertically behind the rear seats.
Furthermore, the KODA Rapid Spaceback offers all of the Rapid limousines clever
solutions. There is a holder for the warning vest under the drivers seat. A waste
comparment in the side door ensures order and cleanliness in the cars interior. The
ice scraper in the fuel filler flap is a standard feature in the Rapid Spaceback as well.
It is easily stored in its holder in the fuel tank lid, which is automatically locked by the
cars central lock system. The KODA Rapid Spaceback also features a double-sided
floor cover for the cargo area. One side is a high-quality carpet for normal use,
the other is a dirt- and water-repelling surface. Simply flip the cover over when
transporting dirty objects in the cargo area.
Other practical solutions concern storage compartments and hooks. The cargo area
features two bag hooks, storage compartments (on the sides behind the wheel houses)
and illumination in the boot. An optional package is available for the cargo area.
It features a flexible storage compartment and the net programme.
No millimetre is wasted in the passenger compartment. A multimedia holder
in the centre console cup holder can hold a mobile phone, iPod or other small mobile
device. The large storage compartments in both front doors feature beverage holders
that can hold one 1.5 litre PET bottle each. There is also a beverage holder for a 1.5 litre
PET bottle in the back of the centre console. The storage compartments in both rear
doors can hold one 0.5 litre PET bottle. The armrest in the rear seats can be used
as a convenient storage compartment or a secure beverage holder. No more looking
for parking tickets as they have their place in the ticket holder in the A pillar
on the drivers side. From the Ambition package on up, options include storage nets
on the inner edges of the front seats as well as storage bags (standard starting
with the Ambition package) on the backs of the front seats.

The new Rapid Spaceback is equipped with so-called C-EPS (column-electric power
steering), in which a program-controlled electric servo motor on the steering column
assists the driver in steering the vehicle. The system only activates when the driver
actually needs steering assistance. One advantage over a hydraulic power steering is
lower fuel consumption.
High passive safety
In the event of a collision, the passengers of the new KODA Rapid Spaceback are
protected by various systems, which work together to reduce the risk of injury
to the driver and passengers. The car features a total of up to six airbags. Two head
airbags cover the entire surface area of the side window, deploying from inside the roof
lining in front of the side window. Two side airbags protect the driver and front
passengers pelvis and chest in the event of a collision. The driver and front passenger
airbags protect the occupants in a head-on collision. The front passenger airbag can be
deactivated if there is a baby in a rear-facing child restraint in the front seat.
In the event of an accident, all of the passengers are protected by three-point safety
belts. The safety belts for the front seats are height-adjustable and have belt tensioners.
The belt tensioners will tighten the seat belts within milliseconds. Belt force limiters
reduce the force of the seat belt on passengers chests. An audible safety belt reminder
will chime if the driver and passenger do not fasten their safety belts. For child safety,
Isofix car seats can be secured in the rear seats with Isofix anchorages and Top Tether
straps, which attach child safety seats securely to the car.
The Euro NCAP top score is an independent confirmation of the high safety level
in the KODA Rapid Spaceback.

Besides the Rapid Spaceback, the Rapid now also comes with C-EPS (column-electric
power steering). Hitherto, the Rapid was equipped with electro-hydraulic power
steering. In C-EPS, a program-controlled electric servo motor on the steering column
assists the driver in steering the vehicle, eliminating the requirement for a hydraulic unit
with a servo pump and hydraulic fluid line. The advantages include better steering
behaviour, lower weight and less bulk.
The Rapid Ambition and Elegance equipment versions now feature new decorative
trims, each in four designs (Graphite Metallic, Silver Brushed, Piano White and Piano
Black). There are also new seat cover designs for these versions. The Active and
Ambition equipment versions feature a darker grey for the dashboard and door panels.
Other innovations include a new faceplate for the Swing radio and chrome-framed
control buttons for the Blues radio.
The KODA Rapid is available with optional xenon headlights. And there are three new
exterior colours for the Rapid: Metal Grey, Rio Red and Race Blue. Metallic Moon White
will also be available at the beginning of 2014. The car continues to be available
in the following metallic colours: Brilliant Silver, Black Magic with pearl effect, Denim
Blue, Cappuccino Beige and Rally Green. There are also four solid shades: Candy White,
Corrida Red, Pacific Blue and Sprint Yellow.
