Toastmasters International president, Jim Kokocki, awarded Kay her new member badge and plaque during the
World Championship of Public Speaking contest at the 2015 Toastmasters International Convention.
Professionally, Kay is a consumer finance consultant, known as Americas Family Financial Expert. She has
worked with Fortune 100 companies, such as Wal-Mart and Procter and Gamble, where she gives advice on how
consumers can make the most of every dollar. Kay has been married for nearly 25 years to Bob, a former Stealth
fighter pilot; they have three sons currently serving in the Marines and the Army.
From the American Embassy in China to the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) International Convention, she has
keynoted or led hundreds of events and financial seminars. A popular speaker, Kay has even pinch-hit for two first
ladies, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush, at special military gatherings. She is frequently sought out by journalists,
appearing on all the major networks and in popular publications. Kay is respected by both the military and civilian
communities, earning top awards from both sectors.
Why join Toastmasters?
I joined Toastmasters for two main reasons: to practice new material in a warm and friendly environment before
presenting it to large groups. Secondly, I want to help other speakers move from good to great when it comes to
their presentation skills.
The last run-through I had with my AS speech in front of my own club, Shoptalk, was at about 90% of my
capacity for excellence. I knew I needed to hit 99% in order to pass the AS in Las Vegas. My club suggested I
change the introduction from quoting statistics to one that was more personable. So I practiced a new, two minute
introduction for two hours and surprised my husband and daughter in the audience by introducing THEM as my
Hero at Home and my Hero. The new introduction absolutely worked better and I was grateful to my Shop Talk
family for the suggestion.
How did you get to the point where you could speak and present like that?
I practice, practice, practice. Vince Lombardi said, Practice doesnt make perfect. Only perfect practice makes
perfect. In fact, I think that even if a speaker is very good, you can still tell if a speech hasnt been adequately
practiced when they present. The magic number for me is three. You have to present your entire speech, ahead of
time, in practice at least three times if you want to be at your own average. If you want to be good, you need to go
over it at least five times, crafting and improving along the way. If you want to be great, youll go over it 10 times.
If you are in a competition for that speech, youll need to present it at least 100 times before the competition, even
if you are only presenting it to your bathroom mirror!
The Toastmasters International Accredited Speaker Program is designed for professional speakers who combine expert knowledge in a
particular subject with mastery of the spoken word, making them sought-after experts in their respective fields.

33,
Congratulations! The 2014-2015 year is now in the
Spotlight
history books. We achieved a strong showing, with club
growth of 9 clubs to a new high of 211 clubs. Our
membership grew by over 6% for the second year in a
row with over half of our clubs achieving Distinguished or better.
We had so much fun at both of our Conferences, joined by our International President
Mohammed Murad, our Past International President Michael Notaro, World Champion Lance
Miller, and other wonderful inspiring and informative speakers. We played with the hot air
balloon and bi-plane images, as we soared with close to 1,900 new members, 5,770 renewing
members and 860 educational achievements, including 23 members reaching the pinnacle of
Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM).
Distinguished
Toastmasters
Dana and Jesse Oakley III hosted
the International Convention at
Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
We enjoyed a well-organized,
full of fun event, with our own
World Champion Dana LaMon as
one of the major speakers,
sharing life stories and tips for
making our club meetings
memorable.
Many of our
members showed our strength
on stage, proudly holding our
Distinguished banner. Special shout out to our printer, Distinguished Toastmaster Steve
Goldstein, who contributed delightful artwork all year long!
Now what? Now we wipe the slate clean, and start the adventure all over. Our new top
three and the team of 60 leaders have designed a year full of interesting and exciting events
open houses, contests and conferences. Each club is also starting their Distinguished Club
Program fresh. Working with our Area Directors, we are focusing on bringing creative ideas to
enhance our Toastmaster meetings.
Lets each of us make the 2015-2016 year special set a goal and an action plan to get it done.
Complete at least one educational. Mentor a new member. Bring creativity to your Table
Topics. What else? You decide. See you in November in Santa Maria, if not before!

LEADERSHIP
I joined Toastmasters in 1998; I did not know what
to expect from the experience of being a member
of Club 9797 Speakeasy Toastmasters. I was made
to feel comfortable and the program was explained
to me. I was immediately assigned a Mentor. To
learn about Toastmasters I volunteered to be of
service to my club, I held different officer positions
which gave me more opportunity to interact with
other club members at Officer Training, Area and
Division Contests, Of course, there is some
traveling, which gives more interest of different
locations where the Toastmasters functions are
being held. I decided I would seek out a different
level of Leadership by volunteering to serve as
Area E1 Governor (Now known as Area Director).
This opened up more interest for me applying
different skills that I had learnt when employed in
the private sector. I was open to learning what
Toastmasters had put in place for their District
Leaders so much so I stepped up and ran for
Division Governor (Now known as Division
Director). I was elected for the term of 2014-2015;
I am still learning and will Pay it Forward towards
New potential Leaders that wish to get involved on
a journey with Toastmasters.
Sincerely,
Julie Boyce. ACG, ALB

The Power of Collaboration Creates A Rich Experience For All
The first 60 days of this Toastmasters year have come and gone in a flash.
Division Director, Alan Mann (of Division B - West Ventura County) and I are hard at
work on several joint projects to support local clubs and members this year. Some of your club officers
may tell you about several options in the area that were made available to them as they trained to serve
you. This is just the beginning.
There are more joint efforts in the making, each of which will be revealed further as their value comes to
fruition.
The power of collaboration does not have to remain at the division level. I invite EVERY Toastmaster to
consider and seek collaborative efforts with a fellow Toastmaster or pave the way to a collaborative event
with another club. Have you thought about arranging to visit another club and having another member
visit yours? How about leading the way for a joint meeting with another club? There are a number of
possibilities! As you come up with events where you can invite guests and other Toastmasters, feel free to
share the flyers for such efforts with your Area Director or myself. We look forward to sharing as many as
we can at http://www.divisionjd33.org and http://d33.toastmastersdistricts.org/Division_J.html!

Ask Dana
Several years ago, Toastmasters International introduced a whole new set of logos and colors, called
Branding. They recommend, technically demanded, that all clubs everywhere use these approved logos
and colors. But, do you know where to find them? Go to the TI website, Toastmasters.org, click on
Leadership Central, then click on Logos, Images and Templates. The above link will take you directly to
that page.
If you want a logo or any of the Design Elements, such as the Rays or Call-outs (you have seen these
used in this newsletter), then click on Logo and Design Elements. To view the item, click on one of the
three options under the title of the item. For example, to get the TI color logo, go to the Logo column and
click (.jpg) next to the first word, "color." This will open the logo in a new window. To use this logo, right
click and save it to your computer. You can use any of the Design Elements or Templates the same way. To
use them in a document, go to the Insert tab, click on Picture. Search for the item you saved and click
Open. It will insert into the document.
There are also many options for Stationery, Newsletters and Flyers available to clubs. Click on the item you
wish to use, it will open as a PDF form. Enter your clubs information and print. Voila, instant flyer. You
can also save these to your computer for later use. Have fun playing with the Logos and Design Elements
and feel free to contact me via email with any questions penguinlady1@cox.net. Thanks.
